From knitting and cross-stitch to designing wrapping paper for Christmas gifts, the Melbourne-based creative’s love of design started early. Since then, Sophie has dedicated 15 years of her life to the industry. She began with a stint at Holden in the colour and trim team, working on concept cars. Next she moved to Country Road as a textile designer across the home, men’s, women’s and children’s departments before being promoted to a senior design position, where she created the iconic Country Road beach towel. However, it wasn’t until 2017 that she struck out on her own and established Købn. “Købn initially launched with a range of poolside towels designed to complement Australian interior style,” says Sophie. “We do indoor/outdoor living so well, and so many homes have the pool as the focal point of the entertaining area. However, it pained me to see beautifully designed areas with brightly coloured, garish beach towels hanging over the pool fence in complete contrast to the stylised interior.” It was this realisation that allowed her to identify a gap in the market for elevated outdoor towels, but her products are actually suitable for indoor and outdoor use. “The range is now sold with the end purpose of the towels [being] up to the purchaser,” she says. While Sophie’s experience and knowledge of the textile industry has been beneficial for the development of her own brand, learning how to navigate the landscape of small-business ownership has been a challenge, especially as a mother of two. “Coming from a design background, I had no idea about all the things that come with running a business,” she says. “To be honest, I didn’t think too deeply about it and went in blindly. I’ve worked hard to get the business to this level, establishing it WORDS LAURA BARRY

Our towels come wrapped in recycled paper, and online orders are sent in compostable satchels or recycled boxes, sealed with environmentally friendly water-activated tape printed with soy-based ink.” Sophie’s greatest achievement is Købn being stocked by retailers who sell brands she has always loved. “Landing some of my dream stockists at home and abroad has been such a positive experience,” she says. “It’s great to know my brand is well received by stores with curated collections I admire.” Købn products are sold online at kobn.com.au as well as retailers in Australia, Paris, Switzerland and Canada.
