eveloped as a high latitude boat, it is a D bit like a Volvo convertible – a vessel for all seasons. The Norwegian builder was acquired by Hanse in 2007 and production of these luxury powerboats was moved to the German yard. Local Hanse dealer Windcraft imports the boats into Australasia. The yard move included a makeover by Fjord chief designer Patrick Banfield to inject some pizzazz into a range that runs from 38-53 foot (11.6–16.2m). The angular lines of plumb bow, flat sheer and abrupt transom are reminiscent of the Banfield’s Wallytender design, which means stylish but practical. Yet another luxury feature is the high level of customisation offered to make each boat unique (or to match its superyacht mothership). Among the attractions is a tall hull which gives protected topsides, 40-knot-plus top speed and various deck layouts. The first hull to arrive in Australia, number #88, comes with a T-Top – ideal for Australian conditions – protecting the central | subscribe | www.boatingnz.co.nz/subscribe/ Boating New Zealand 51

The review boat deck layout included dinette and cooking facilities, but you could opt for watersports orientated open- deck layout. The tall topsides allow for a double bed with toilet in the forepeak and cooking is done on an electric barbecue beside the aft dinette on deck. The dinette transforms to a double sunbed. VERSATILE DECK Open day-boats are all about maximising the fun and sensations of alfresco boating, so feeling the wind in your hair as you blast along, perhaps with a skier behind, is all part of the thrill. Driving is a key part of the fun on the Fjord and the centre console layout plays to that. Whether standing or sitting at the bolstered helm seat with your co-pilot alongside, both sheltered behind the frameless spray hood enjoying maximum visibility, it’s a fun place to be. The console is angled to be shaded, with all the essential controls close at hand – twin throttles and the bow thruster joystick nearby on the right (a bowthruster is recommended given the vesel’s tall topsides will create windage). The Simrad NSS MFD provides essential charting, there are chunky switches for the other controls and the Mercury digital display gives the fuel burn. Enjoying a day of boating to the maximum requires some subtlety as well. So, the extended T-Top on our review boat also covered the dinette, with an electric awning providing even BERTHS PRE-SELLING NOW – 99 YEAR LEASE ART IST IM PR ESSI ON ONLY STAGE 1 NOW PRE-SELLING YOUR Waterfront lots with 25m berths from $1.75M AUD 10m-30m private berths from $165,000 AUD WHITSUNDAY ESCAPE FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT Sophia Cross +61 474 276 981 Rob Taylor +61 428 466 124 SHUTEHARBOURMARINA.COM 52 Boating New Zealand

The aft deck area appears sturdily built with well-engineered fixtures finished in thick chrome. Underfoot, synthetic teak offers a cool and grippy surface. Choosing the inboard version would maximise the boat’s open-plan layout, but the popularity of outboards is hard to argue with. And there’s still good water access to either side of the 350hp Mercury engines, swinging gates preventing junior crew or dogs exiting. Waist-high bulwarks with tubed rails offer further security when you amble forward for some bow riding, or to enjoy the forepeak lounge positioned between the console bulkhead and the boat’s sides in the bow. It’s a spacious lounge that can seat eight around the small teak table and comes with an optional poled bimini. Teak gunwales add to the comfort level, especially when it’s hot. 54 Boating New Zealand

Consumer marine electronics continue to evolve and improve. feature And, it seems, every few months new, improved models, software updates and additional features are announced, the user experience Simrad NSX increasingly converging with what’s familiar in automotive and consumer electronics. These include hassle-free software updates, on and off the water trip planning, a streamlined chart display that looks the same across all platforms, plus easy transfer of all data, including routes and waypoints. INTUITIVE OPERATION Navico’s engineers have really worked hard to make operating the NSX simple and intuitive: one-touch shortcut to access full-screen, a handy, always accessible Activity Bar to switch between applications – no need to return to the home screen – all chart settings accessible from the chart screen; chart orientation button to switch between north up, heading up and course up; easy management of waypoints and routes and access to more details as and when required. Drag and drop customisation allows users to configure their display any way they like with whatever windows they want. REAL WORLD DEMO The new NSX is certainly impressive in operation. While McCorkingdale is familiar with Simrad electronics from his own boat and from hand-over demonstrations to new Haines Hunter customers, the latest NSX iteration has features that are new to him, so he was just as interested in the demonstration as we were. After running through the set-up and demonstrating how easy it is to customise and tailor the display depending on personal preference or immediate need, Hooper suggested we explore the NSX’s sonar capability. With CHIRP sonar, DownScan Imaging and SideScan available offering high resolution images below and to the sides of your vessel, fish (and underwater hazards) have nowhere to hide! 60 Boating New Zealand

THECATCH WINTER SQUID FISHING with MARK KITTERIDGE Calamari time! BELOW Maintain light The cooler months may not suit but steady pressure some anglers, but they signal productive and when retrieving squid – and let them expel their tasty times ahead for squid (egi) fishers! ink before bringing them aboard or ashore. One of the interesting things about squid is that they only live for about a year, so their presence follows a predictable cycle each year culminating in death immediately after spawning.  Growth rates vary with every new season and between individuals, so very big and very small specimens often overlap, but squid generally grow large enough to be worth catching from late May onwards. June through October are the prime months. TACKLE THE ROD: Although a standard soft-bait rod may suffice, the more dedicated egi fishers use light-actioned 3-4kg rods around 8-9’ (2.44 – 2.75m) long. The ability to cast squid jigs a decent distance is a big advantage, as is a forgiving action, which helps to prevent the squid jig’s spikes/tines tearing out or ripping off a tentacle.  64 Boating New Zealand

BELOW Some locations get plenty of squid fishing pressure. Numerous ink stains on the ground is a sure sign the location attracts plenty of squid. RIGHT A large broad squid and a smaller specimen safely in the next, ink sacs exhausted. THE REEL: A small compact 2500-size reel loaded with very limp 4-5kg braid to achieve the best possible casting distance and handling will do the job nicely. THE TRACE: Many experienced egi fishers recommend two to three metres of 3-5kg fluorocarbon trace, which is fine if a static light source has brought squid up to the surface at night or the fishing area is reasonably clear of obstacles. However, squid tend to hang around weedy structures, both for their own protection and to help them ambush prey, especially during the day. If the jig is not presented close enough to the cover, there will be no hook ups. So I would recommend 15-20lb fluorocarbon instead for this situation (some keen egi fishers even use 30lb when fishing particularly gnarly ground!). THE SQUID JIG: There are so many different squid jigs available at widely different price points related to which qualities are incorporated into the jig. (You’ll only have to stand next to someone else catching squid after squid in the cold darkness of night while your own jig remains unmolested a time or two to forget about the cost and go for the best!) Japanese brand Yamashita has been the most popular brand for many years, although more recent offerings from Shimano (i.e. Sephia Clench), Daiwa (i.e. Esmeraldas), Yo-Zuri (i.e. Pata Pata) and Black Magic (i.e. Squid Snatcher) have their successful nights too. You can never predict what size, colour or other specific attribute will prove the most attractive to squid at any given time! Once hooked, wind squid in slowly and gently, but keep the pressure on, or they will come free. shocked free of the weed, or they will bend out – they can be bent back into position and used again. JIG COLOURS AND SIZES: It definitely pays to experiment with squid jigs in different sizes and colours, as well as swapping between luminous and non-luminous jigs. Changing jigs can make a huge difference to the fishing – in this respect it is very similar to soft-baiting for snapper! As a huge generalisation, 2.5-inch (6.35cm) jigs attract squid of all worthwhile sizes, closely followed by 3.0-inch (7.6cm, especially later in the season. Pink, orange, red and green jigs are my favourites, but more natural baitfish colours (i.e. pilchard and mackerel) also produce well at times. Bright pearly-white and black can be very effective, too. As I use Yamashita, it’s the only brand I know really well, THE SHALLOWS especially the ‘Live Search’ model, which boasts lots of features, many of which were incorporated as a result of studies in The basic egi style involves casting out your jig over shallow Japanese universities. reefs in around one- to eight-metres deep, with the best fishing usually found in sheltered bays (although some current nearby For example, a Yamashita jig has a ‘thermal jacket’, with is not a bad thing. Some anglers achieve this with mechanical-jigging temperature than the surrounding water, just like a baitfish movements (i.e. a speedy wind of the reel handle to accompany or crustacean. This encourages squid to grab the jig more each whip of the rod). Others simply make two or three erratic aggressively and hang on harder afterwards, making successful movements upwards and diagonally past their bodies over a hook-ups more likely.  longer, single rod lift, while the remainder treat squid jigs as soft-baits, using much less aggressive jigging motions. Other potential attractants include: specific-frequency internal rattles that imitate feeding fish activity and which Whichever technique is used, the pause that follows the travel effectively through the water, attracting squid closer; lift sequence, when the angler slowly winds in the slack line fluorescent, ultra-violet, flashy and luminous coatings (all well created by the uplifted rod, is critical – that’s when the squid proven); an attractive natural action created by the jig’s shape grabs the offering. and chin weight; and having a descent rate that allows time for the squid to spot the lure and grab it. What follows is important too, because if the rod is a firm one and the reel’s drag has been set too hard, the jig’s crown of This last aspect is especially important, particularly when sharp tines can easily rip out of the squids soft body or sever a targeting squid over weedy and rocky areas, as anglers will catch tentacle. It therefore pays to set the reel’s drag very lightly - just more squid if the lure is reasonably close to seafloor cover. But enough to retrieve line when retrieving and not much more! obviously losing a couple of expensive jigs will take the shine off the fishing experience. Fortunately, some brands provide Once hooked, wind squid in slowly and gently, but keep the the sink rate in seconds per metre, so if the approximate depth pressure on, or they will come free. Either the jig tines will be Sometimes when you’re fishing in deeper waters, squid will follow a bait or lure to the surface, indicating they are in the area. If you want to catch some, try tying one or two squid jigs on droppers above a sinker, ledger-rig style. Sometimes the rod holder will catch a few squid for you while you continue fishing for other species, but it is usually more effective to actively jiggle the weighted rig near the bottom. 66 Boating New Zealand

OPPOSITE The writer with a large arrow squid taken under the boat’s lights at night. LEFT A couple of daytime squid – calamari for dinner! Many boat fishers encounter squid while overnighting at sea. Squid are attracted by deck lights, which also attract small baitfish, krill and other potential squid prey. Those squid visible in the lights are often only ‘the tip of the iceberg’, with many others lurking out of sight in deeper water or in the dark on the periphery of the illuminated area. It pays to explore all those areas with a squid jig. Placing the squid jig under a float can be very productive in this situation, too, especially if there’s some light chop on the water’s surface. MANMADE STRUCTURE For land-based squid fishers too, it pays to check out anywhere a light source illuminates a section of water. Wharves, bridges, boat ramps and the like are good candidates. Lights attract a variety of potential squid prey, which in turn attract the squid. I suggest visiting such areas during the cooler months, at various phases of the tide. Even if you don’t see any sign of squid in the water, check the nearby surroundings for ink patches – a dead giveaway other fishers recently enjoyed squid success! ELECTRIC FLIGHT 78 Boating New Zealand

review Candela C7 WORDS BY JOHN EICHELSHEIM PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO BY ROGER MILLS oiling is becoming all the rage among boating F enthusiasts the world over, and the commercial potential of foiling is just beginning to be realised, a potential innovative Swedish boatbuilding and technology company Candela is already exploring with some of its larger models. The Candela 7, though, is designed more for recreational boating and was in some respects the development platform for the company – the 7.5m C7 has now been superseded by a new, larger, faster, and even more efficient C8 model, one of which is headed to our shores soon. The owner of the only Candela C7 in New Zealand is Wanaka’s Kostya Marchenko, who also represents the Candela brand here. Kostya is a self-confessed foiling nut who enjoys a range of foiling watersports – and Wanaka is an ideal watersports venue, particularly in the summer months. He’s also a huge advocate for electric propulsion – he drives a Tesla – which explains his enthusiasm for the Candela brand. With masses of torque, the Tesla easily tows the C7. The Candela C7 is an unusual looking boat, certainly on the trailer, which was custom built in Sweden. It’s a braked tandem-axle design with a combination of wheels and rollers. The central double row of rollers pivots for easy launch and retrieval and an electric winch does the winding. While the trailer seems quite lightly built, it is certified by NZTA. One of the keys to the C7’s impressive performance is its light weight. All up, it weighs just 1.4 tonnes, but the hull is only 90kg! The rest of the boat’s mass comprises batteries, the motor, hydraulics, foiling equipment, cooling pumps and electronic and ancillary gear. The hull is constructed by hand from carbon-fibre, as are the hydrofoils, including the outboard T-foil. In ‘flying’ mode, the C7 rides on a single transverse hydrofoil amidships, supported by two uprights that pivot slightly fore and aft at the behest of Candela’s Trailer boats don’t come more computerised hydraulic active control system, which also twists the unconventional than the Candela C7. Boating NZ travelled to beautiful Lake foil for finer control. The foil retracts under the hull, the uprights Wanaka to experience the Swedish- built electric-powered foiling sliding inboard between the seat backs on either side of the boat. monohull. The C7’s computer takes data from a pair of ultrasonic sensors in the bow which assess wave height and wave interval in real time, from gyros, an accelerometer, GPS and a compass. It interprets all the data and uses a clever algorithm to alter the foil’s angle of attack, making continuous adjustments for wind, wave height and load up to 100 times a second. The outboard T-foil is also actively controlled to maintain pitch and stability. | subscribe | www.boatingnz.co.nz/subscribe/ Boating New Zealand 79

Candela has developed not only the foiling set-up, but also the hydraulic active control system and sophisticated software controlling it, which all work together to achieve and maintain smooth, level flight. It’s a very impressive technology suite. Conditions on the lake for our afternoon with the Candela C7 started off sunny and calm, if a little nippy, at least for the Aucklanders among us. Kostya launched the boat singlehandedly and brought it alongside the dock so we could board. The electric motor is housed at the top of the outboard leg, rather like a conventional outboard powerhead, but the streamlined leg or skeg is much longer, extending 1.5m underwater. The outboard has three positions: fully tilted for trailering; intermediate for low-speed manoeuvring in shallow water; and fully down for foiling. Marchenko describes the motor as happy collaboration: the electric motor itself, its control system, and the battery are all by German marine electric propulsion leader Torqeedo, while the housing, actuation system, skeg and rear foil are Candela. The Torqeedo 400KWh Deep Blue battery is essentially the same as is used in BMW electric vehicles – in the Candela, it’s water-cooled and comes with an eight-year warranty. The boat looks much more conventional in the water. It’s a bowrider design with relatively low freeboard. The hull forward of the foil has a wave-breaking v-section, but behind the transverse foil the boat is virtually flat-bottomed for ease of planing. We were grateful for the optional bimini top and side windows, which protected us from the chilly slipstream. The windscreen is acrylic (glass in the C8) with a walkthrough window and door panel to the bow. With four adults aboard it was closer to 18 knots, but once the magic number was reached, the C7 rose clear of the water to fly 100cm above the surface of the lake. As soon as the boat began foiling, power use dropped dramatically, from 100% of available engine power just prior to lift off, to 20% or less when foiling. The noise levels also drop away, though there was some mechanical noise from the motor and hydraulic chattering from the active control system as it went about its work, but in general the foiling experience was both serene and surreal. We flew off down the lake, riding flat and level, banking gently into turns, and enjoying the stunning scenery. In standard default mode the boat banks 8° in turns, which keeps the g-forces on the passengers under control; in sport mode, banking angle increases to 12°. In reality, the foiling turning circle is large, so turns are gentle affairs – just allow enough sea room. Turn too sharply and the computer will take over and land the vessel. 82 Boating New Zealand

D I Y B O AT I N G with NORMAN HOLTZHAUSEN 1 Bilge pump disaster ABOVE The float switch is fully-encapsulated in a protective cage. ABOVE Divecat sinking by the stern. Is you bilge pump installation up to 84 Boating New Zealand moving a large volume of water out of your hull should the need arise? Many people have asked why my aluminium power catamaran Divecat sank, and while there were several contributing factors, one that could and should have been mitigated against was the bilge pump installation. All boaties should consider whether a single bilge pump is adequate should you ever need to move a lot of water out of your hull in a hurry. So firstly, some background. Divecat passed Maritime NZ survey just over two months before she sank. That implies the boat design was approved (i.e. was deemed to be inherently stable and safe), and all the installed safety equipment was of an approved type, configuration and had

Nevertheless, she took ...changing the on water and was unable to get rid of it – or even let the skipper location of the bilge know water was coming in – until there was so much weight pump outlet is easy, onboard it began to affect the boat’s handling. and a better bilge pump configuration On the day Divecat sank the sea conditions were not great, is a no-brainer. although well within her operating limits. However, a steering issue and a nasty chop meant we were travelling at just below planing speed, which meant that the pressure waves in front of the outboard legs were pushing up against the transom of the boat. And because we were not planing, the boat was ‘squatting’ at the transom which lifts well clear of the water at normal planing speed. And this is where the transom design was at fault, with an angled plate that allowed water to slosh up and into the bilge pump outlet. This can be seen in the pictures. That outlet was also too close to the waterline – not a problem at rest, or at planing speed, but a definite issue at slower speeds, especially when the transom drops to its lowest point just before the boat climbs onto the plane. On the day, water would have been sloshing into that outlet hole, and then running down into the bilge. As the water level rose the float switch should have kicked in, starting the bilge pump and the alarm alerting the skipper. Neither happened, for reasons we haven’t been able to determine. When the boat was recovered, the bilge was full of silt and debris, and although the float switch seemed to function, it may be that something loose in the compartment (some gear perhaps?) had interfered with its operation. So, the water siphoned into the hull through the outlet, slowly at first and then faster and faster as the stern dropped lower. Eventually water was coming in through other openings | subscribe | www.boatingnz.co.nz/subscribe/ Boating New Zealand 85

A second design fault came into play at this point: the original watertight bulkheads inside the hulls were positioned A far better solution is an anti-siphon loop fitted to the for an inboard engine configuration. When Divecat was outlet hose. We elected to install a model from TruDesign, a switched to outboard power (and the weight of the engines Kiwi company that is at the forefront of plastic marine fittings. moved nearly a metre behind the original transom) no new This plastic loop is installed in the hose line at a position higher bulkheads were fitted. The valve drops open and allows air to suck in when have dragged the whole vessel down. the pressure drops, so it is impossible for water to back-siphon through the outlet. Also, this design does not impede water With the benefit of hindsight, a number of these factors flow, unlike the non-return valve, so that almost the full could have been easily mitigated while others would have been pump volume is available. Anti-siphon loops are also relatively less easy. inexpensive and easy to install. Fitting new bulkheads and changing transom profiles are So, our new bilge pump configuration included: major engineering exercises, while weather conditions are outside • A large-capacity pump our control. On the other hand, changing the location of the bilge • An enclosed float switch pump outlet is easy, and a better bilge pump configuration is a • An anti-siphon loop no-brainer. That’s what we’re planning to do as we restore Divecat • Raising the bilge outlet higher above the waterline. to operational condition. We will also be installing a second float switch as an independent high-water alarm. The photos show the progress so far. The original pump and switch used 32mm bilge hose, while the new setup required The first aspect of the new installation is to increase the 38mm hose. That slight increase in hose diameter gives an pump capacity. The vessel came with 2,000gph pumps (about effective 50% increase in hose capacity (thanks, High School 7,500 litres per hour) in each compartment. This sounds like a geometry!), although it did necessitate completely new through- lot but is inadequate for a compartment with a volume of over hull fittings. And the new outlet is approximately 30cm higher 3,000 litres. Going to the largest size pump available – around than the original and now higher than deck level. Luckily, we 3,600gph or 14,000 litres per hour – means that, in the worst had space inside the transom to position the vented loop even case, the entire volume can be emptied in under 15 minutes. higher than the outlets. We can install one of the new bilge pump configurations, and as we progress with the boat rebuild, we will The second technical detail is the float switch that operates be installing identical configurations in each of the hull spaces. each pump. While a standard bail-arm float switch is simple to fit and easy to test, it can be easily obstructed if there are loose There is one more component that we are going to install, items in the bilge. I suspect this is what happened in our case, and cruising yachties will be familiar with this – a high-water as there was some loose cordage, a gaff hook, a bait board, alarm. This is a second, completely independent float switch connected to a buzzer at the helm. It will be located about 5cm a couple of fenders and some other stuff in the compartment. above the first float switch and in a slightly different position A better solution is a fully enclosed switch with a ‘cage’ in the compartment. Then, should the first switch fail for whatever reason, we will get a warning that there is water in the around the floating arm. This prevents anything interfering bilge while the level is still low enough to deal with. It is easier with the movement of the float. The only downside is that they to manually pump a hull with 10cm of water in the bottom are harder to test since you cannot just flick the bail arm up than one with water nearly a metre deep and rising! BNZ with your finger. Another option is an electronic switch with no moving parts, although these are more expensive. And the third aspect I wanted to address was how to prevent water from siphoning back down the pipe. Some pumps come with a rubber one-way valve inside the outlet, which theoretically closes when there is any back pressure. Alternatively, an in-line non-return valve can be installed into the outlet hose. However, these can partly impede the flow of water through the pipe, thereby reducing overall pump capacity. They are also hard to test and are easily blocked by detritus, preventing the valve from closing in the case of back pressure. 86 Boating New Zealand

SUBTLE SALOON Stepping into the saloon is yet another pleasant experience on the F55 – everything just looks right. By that I mean the layout is sensible, with galley slightly lowered to port and the central saloon seating is raised to allow panoramic views through the large side windows. Another step elevates the helm position to starboard. Two consoles have pros and cons. Extra expense is one con and impinging on saloon space is another, but downstairs is the only place I’d like to steer from when offshore. That’s because tall flybridges’ pendulum effect in a swell eventually tests even the hardiest of stomachs. The saloon helm console echoes the equipment layout of the flybridge but with hand-stitched leather bucket seats for support and stability. Practicalities abound as well – the main switchboard is beside the console with maintenance access underneath from the cabin, while an electric window lets the skipper give instructions to the deck crew. Cabinetry is about the best I’ve seen for a while – curved walnut panelling with directionally laid veneers, polished stainless-steel inlays, and contemporary paint finishes, contrast with darker wood. Around the galley slotted cabinets bristle with branded crockery, complemented by the L-shaped work surface that demarcates the area, yet still allows two people to prepare food. The fully-equipped galley has a deep, square sink with cabinets overhead and underneath. Other essentials include a four-hob electric cooker and oven, plus a large dishwasher. feature DIY waterproofing WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY BIRGIT HAKL AND CHRISTIAN FELDBAUER A WATERPROOF Flexible spray dodgers and biminis made of Sunbrella or similar waterproof textiles keep the cockpit comfy and dry. Unfortunately, those materials lose their water resistance after a few years of exposure to the elements. specially in the tropics, even high-quality E materials start letting some water dribble in during heavy rain or on rough passages, resulting in very unhappy helms-people. Of course, there is a variety of waterproofing products available on the market, but many of them are rather expensive – and toxic! Fortunately, there’s also a low-budget, easy-to-make recipe for DIY waterproofing. Boats that are built and outfitted for sailing in cold climates and rough weather usually feature a doghouse or hardtop sprayhood to provide shelter from cold, rain and wind. The helmsperson stays dry at all times, and at anchor such a ‘conservatory’ expands the dry living area considerably. Sailing in the tropics, the elements are usually more benign and keeping them out is not such an important issue – some purists even sail without a dodger to enjoy wind and spray in their faces. But for those who like to be sheltered from wind, sun and spray 98 Boating New Zealand
