hello Pop of colour YOU KNOW WHEN YOU come across something so I’m so obsessed with the red hue great that you just can’t wait to share it with your friends? of these dining chairs in Emma Well, this issue, we’ve got 101 things we’ve been bursting Ainscough’s kitchen, I’m thinking of to share with you. There are homewares, podcasts, bags, repainting my own. To see more of furniture, colour trends, beauty products and brand this charming home, flip to page 40 collabs that are so brilliant, we had to include them in our annual Love List. Want to know what’s hot right now? Flip to page 96 to find out. One of the 101 is Australian designer and ex-Real Living style editor Sarah Ellison who has cracked the US market with her eponymous furniture collection. Can you believe she had her launch party at fashion designer Jenna Lyons’ own apartment in New York? Check out the space on our cover. To me, the coolest thing is that Sarah and her business partner Leigh have proven that with hard work (and impeccable taste), you can achieve anything you want. And, it always pays to pursue your passion, even if it’s a bit scary at first. Something else that’s trending again is buying vintage. I don’t just mean mid-century designs, I’m talking proper 100-year-old antiques. ‘Brown furniture’ was out of favour for a while, but these charming pieces are back on trend, and – along with beautiful antique homewares and linens – are now gracing the homes of the chicest aesthetes. And they’re not as expensive as you might think. Have a look at Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree and auction houses like Lawsons. A note on auction houses: these days they’re more about the online bidding than in-person paddle waving, so don’t be shy. homes A light and airy flat in south-west London proved to be the ideal setting for this interior designer’s first home Lived experience The dining room of Emma’s London home displays her design ethos. “‘Home’ means different things to different people and so needs to reflect the lives of those who inhabit it. I aim to produce honest interiors with a playful personality.” A real living 41

Interior designer, Emma Ainscough. emmaainscough.com | @emma__ainscough EMMA AINSCOUGH FEELS one’s home should be Walking the talk Emma aims to design homes that “provide a stimulating backdrop their sanctuary – a happy and honest place. She hadn’t to everyday life.” With its successful combination of aesthetic appeal and useability, long been working as an interior designer at a leading her own home is the perfect example of achieving this goal. “Our interior spaces can London studio when she discovered a flat she wanted impact how we feel, so comfort plays a vital part in the homes I create.” to call her own, a two-bedroom split-level maisonette within a Victorian house in south-west London. She was enchanted by the connected feel of the spaces – a mezzanine was included in the layout so the kitchen sat on the level above the living room which benefited from the lovely double height ceiling. EASY DOES IT Emma lived in the space for a year before she made any changes, then started the process of transforming the apartment into her first dream home. She spent a couple of months, “working on drawings and specifications on weekends and evenings,” then renovated the kitchen, added built-in storage in the bedrooms and new flooring throughout the entire apartment. Renovations typically become drawn out, but it only took a small team three months from start to finish to complete her vision. That year or so before starting renovations was important to Emma because it gave her time to live and breathe in the flat, “to fully understand how I use the space, what works and what could be improved to make the most of the space.” VISION REALISED Now the home boasts bespoke joinery in the kitchen, pale green cabinets. “I used green as my neutral colour,” and a beautiful layering of patterns and textures with personal touches sprinkled throughout every space, from the gallery of prints hanging in the dining room, to the treasures on the living room shelves. Her favourite space in her home is decidedly her bedroom, “I was in two minds about using such a strong colour as the room is not big,” says Emma, “But I absolutely love it – the green tone somehow feels cool in summer and warm in winter, and I was able to use my favourite Bennison fabric on the bespoke headboard which is the perfect pop of pattern. It’s a very cosy space, the only downside being it’s sometimes not easy to drag myself out of bed in the morning!” R @reallivingmag 42

homes Welcome to dinner In the dining room, a tumble of citrus fruit punctuates the table laid with a classic gingham tablecloth from Zara Home, while candles in bold hues from Petersham Nurseries in London complete the setting. For the seating, Emma chose ‘Chiara’ chairs in pomegranate from Ceraudo. A real living 43

style tip “The home should be a sanctuary, a happy place that references you and your style but, equally importantly, how you function and live.” @reallivingmag 44

homes LEFT TO RIGHT Haven made In the bedroom Emma chose the peaceful shade of ‘Wedgewood Green’ by Eico Paints for the walls and upholstered her bedhead in Crewelwork – Jungle Colours On Oyster by Bennison. Artwork by her bed includes an antique piece depicting grapes, while the floral piece is a pressed flower collection Emma made herself during lockdown, using flowers from her mum’s garden. Divine inspiration A snapshot of Emma’s inspiration pinboards in her studio Personal touch Emma bought a chest of drawers from Ikea, replaced the handles with brass handles and added fabric under the glass to add interest. She found the candlesticks on Instagram and sourced the fish prints on the wall from The Shop Floor Project. A real living 45

Bespoke addition Emma renovated the kitchen with new joinery, adding countertops in a white composite with a grain running through. She sourced the brass mixer from a builder’s merchant. ‘Chappell Green’ by Farrow & Ball was selected for the lower cabinets and ‘Slate I’ by Paint & Paper Library for those above. Brass knobs in two different sizes – smaller on the top cabinets – round out the new look. @reallivingmag 48
