After taking some time to reset with my new daughter, I decided I wasn’t going to be defeated and I borrowed a sewing machine from a friend in 2018 and taught myself to sew tote bags with French seams from the kitchen table during my daughter’s nap times. I began selling them on to friends and family and eventually progressed to selling on platforms such as Etsy. Now, I have my own website where I sell made-to- order sustainable African wax print products, including homewares such as cushion covers and basket bags as well as vibrant fashion accessories such as headbands, make-up bags and handbags. Our brand mission is to bring colour and happiness to the world with our joyful print creations. WASTE-NOT I was born in Ibadan Nigeria and raised in London from the age of two. The first totes I sewed for Lolly & Kiks were made using leftover fabric from my traditional Nigerian engagement ceremony. It’s a West African tradition to wear the same fabric, in your own way, at special occasions, representing that we are all the same as much as we are all unique, joined together for our love for one another. Reusing fabrics to eliminate waste has continued to be an important value for Lolly & Kiks. Being part of the made-to-order or small-batch fashion revolution means we have minimal fabric waste anyway, but any offcuts created from making one product are repurposed to make smaller items such as our coin purses, key chains and eye masks.
