USA & Canadian cheques only - made out to: Bill McLaughlin Please send your subscription renewal in before the next issue - Jan. 29 / 21 DEAR FELLOW 1929 BUICK OWNERS Greg & Suzanne Jones and their 29-44 Wow ! A year without car meets, flea markets and live old car auctions. Who would have believed, a year ago, what we had in store for us this year. My car situation is slightly changed. Buick is ready to go away for the winter (still with a tick in cyl. 5), Cord’s transmission was shipped back from the USA in a crate and the MG’s motor is coming out for a rebuild after blowing-up on the hwy. on our way to our first MG meet. Sadly, a number of MG’s on their way to the meet didn’t stop to help - something that I can’t imagine - an old Buick not helping a fellow in trouble. We lost a real faithful 29 Buick member in Sam Tiller of Logan, WV last Feb. Sam had a 47 and two 57’s. My condolences to his family. Be careful of scams. I had someone send me a picture of a 29-27, in great shape, telling me he was going to part out the car and did I want

2 29-20 McLaughlin Buick owned by Walter and Colin DeNiese of Mississauga, Ontario. I drove my roadster out to see them and their car in July - the only trip I’ve taken with my 29-44, this year. Colin and Walter DeNiese and their 29-20 McL-Buick Walter tries out your Editor’s Roadster Walter and your Editor with the 29-20 McL-Buick In Sept., Walter drives his now back together 27 And here’s a video of their fall drive: <https://youtu.be/ar4Zqkh4KLU>

3 A few tears were shed by longtime Spanish owner Juan Miguel Motos as he watched his 29-49 being loaded and on its way to a new owner, in October Dave Krusemark (27) writes: \"I purchased my 29-27 in 1971 from the estate of its original owner while a student at the University of Illinois. It had been stored after making a round trip to California, in 1953 and came with the original 1929 title, owner's I moved to Georgia and sold the car to my Uncle in manual, detailed trip and complete maintenance log 1978 with the option of repurchase if he ever decided (although they were somewhat mouse damaged). to sell it. I recently did that when my Uncle \"downsized\" prior to moving to assisted living, so becoming both its 2nd and 4th owner. Richard (now 92) and Scott Baum of Baum Chevrolet / Buick in Clinton, IL have been kind enough to speak with me remembering both the car and original owner.”

4 29-27 owned by Tony Bult, who writes \"well a gentleman wanted to buy my 29-51 and, in order to make the deal, his 29-27 was included. He happens to be a friend and needed a much more of a put-together car than his 27-27 so I took his 27 as part of the deal for my 51. My car went to a good home, runs well and will be enjoyed. It was a well kept car and nicely done, older restoration.” I then sold it the 29-27 to Marty Grell. ≈≈≈ 29-27 Owned by Bernie in Cleveland, GA ≈≈≈ Bill Billado (47) writes: “Jeff Fink and his friend Bob headed out at noon today on a twelve hour trek back to the northwest corner of Michigan with a very tired '29 Buick model 51 that I have had in storage for 45 years. Severe storms are forecasted for all of today, but somehow we managed enough \"dry time\" to get the car out of the barn and onto his trailer. What could have been a miserable process turned out to be a smooth and enjoyable event.”

5 drive the car occasionally applying the brakes. If all this doesn’t work, then it’s tranny pulling time. WHAT DID THEY SELL FOR Jeff Fink strapping down his new purchase - a 29-51 29-48 with 78K Miles, For Sale for $9K Subsequently, Bill wrote: “Bill, I have an embarras- 29-47 with cracked block in Hemmings for $16K sing update to my earlier report. Turns out that 29-27 looking quite original, on eBay for $8,500. what we thought was a model 51 is actually a model 41. When Jeff parked the car next to his other '29 Buick, he noticed that it was a bit shorter - eight inches to be exact. Since he purchased my car for the six good demountable wood wheels, this discrepancy is not an issue. On another note, this car is in the same condition as the model 41 that the late Peter Douma started with many years ago. Today his car belongs to a Mr. Welker and it is very impressive, so perhaps this one should be a candidate for restoration. TECHNICAL INFORMATION FROZEN CLUTCH PROBLEMS / SOLUTIONS: Tony Bult writes: “I have had a number of calls this year, including from our NEWSLETTER Editor, about frozen clutches - caused by the car either sitting for years or in a damp garage over the winter. What happens is that rust forms on the surface of the metal clutch plates. One way to avoid this, is to cut a board to fit between the depressed clutch and the front seat. This will not allow the plates to rust together. To free a frozen clutch, first try driving it up and down a quiet road, with the clutch depressed, hit- ting the brakes occasionally. If this doesn’t work try lifting the back wheels off the ground and running the car while occasionally applying the brakes hard. If these are a no-go, then remove the floorboards to get at the clutch inspection plate on the transmis- sion. Spray brake cleaner onto the clutch plates for a few days and then run the car for an hour or so to warm up the transmission (Ed. Note: I also used Marlene’s hair dryer, on high through the inspection opening, to add extra heat on the clutch.) Then

INTERESTING ITEMS 8 MYSTERY COMPARTMENT IN 29-27: Tony Bult HIDDEN COMPARTMENT: Norm McKendry sent writes: “Hi Bill, on floor behind front seat, in this me a shot of his 54CC’s door compartment ... 29-27, there were two removable boards. Thought that there were two compartments where a bottle each of whiskey could be stashed and covered with back carpet. You can see they were not for storage, so what is it: 1) place for children to pee out while traveling with parents not wanting to stop; 2) a place to get rid of booze having to disappear because cop car is catching up; 3) thrill of shattering glass to see it hit pavement similar in train cars where, as kids, we threw bottles to shatter on the track bed while train was traveling; 4) throwing bags of heroin, cocaine out so cops would not find in car. Any other ideas ?” ... and, the easy way to take your 29 Buick from San Floor Cut-outs in 29-27 Francisco to Del Monte, CA, something Marlene Says “G. Probably predates our 29‘s, but interesting. I tracked down the US patent on that Italian thermo- meter. See the attached documents, below. Looks like it was early ’20 but not patented in the US until 28. It claims to be able to compensate for altitude / boiling point.

11 DIRECTORY ADDITIONS 1929 Buicks continue to be added to the \"DIRECTORY\". 4 more 1929 Buicks have turned up since the last issue of the NEWSLETTER. There are, by my latest count, over 900 1929 Buicks, McLaughlin Buicks and Holden bodied Buicks, worldwide listed in the DIRECTORY. The SILVER ANNIVERSARY BUICK NEWSLETTER goes out to owners of well over 300 1929 Buicks in all parts of the World. Not sure why you’d want to own an antique car and not be part of an exclusive Club - but I guess that’s for another time. • If you know or run into someone who owns a '29 Buick, who doesn't get the NEWSLETTER, give them the details and encourage them to be added (or re-added) to the mailing list • Remember, if you're moving, send the NEWSLETTER your new address so you won't miss any issues • If you want an updated copy of the DIRECTORY, either by model or by State/Province (good for traveling), at any time, let me know and I’ll email it to you or send me $3 to cover mailing, etc. STATE/ MDL LAST FIRST ADDRESS CITY PROV. Noteworthy are: 1) Many cars have the windwing option (assume W/W’s were put on by Howard’s SF dealership). 2) Note the chassis and Fisher body displays in the background. 3) The model 44 (at the center rear) has an unusual light (tan?) sidemount and boot cover which I was black on all models. 4) All cars have the star hubcaps and flip-top rad cap Both late. 5) Literature on a table near the centre. 6) Since the radiator emblems were discontinued on Sept. 16, '28,

12 the ends were removed and the center portion attached to the fern stands in the foreground. 7) There are 14 out of 19 Buicks models in the photo and presumably more to the left. 8) The cars are outfitted with the new tread Goodrich Silvertown tires.
