The website included a 1968 photo of casino magnate William F. Harrah with a 29 Buick roadster that looked just like Grosskopf’s car. The car in the 50 year old photo had the same light-colored body, the same dark- cobered fabric sidemount tire covers and the same dark-colored painted wire spoke wheels, which were a Buick option, That was understandable since the car pictured was, indeed, the same Buick. This group is looking initially at the early Marvel carburetors used from 1916 to about 1926. The data is fundamentally applicable to 1929 also and we will get into that era later. Both Richard and Dean have 1929 cars along with 1916 and 1918. Ray Brown’s work was and is on his 1923 Buick. The study includes air valve spring rates, high speed jet size, a flow test fixture to measure the actual liquid flow of the jets and further car testing to measure actual air/fuel ratios. Richard has developed the capability of making new metering jets, Dean has the flow test fixture, Ray has his 23 Buick set up for A/F measurements and Dean has the A/F test equipment on both cars but not yet taking data. We will report the results in both Newsletters as it becomes available. Curling was a lot more fun than I ever thought it Now what about the fibre gear. One good thing is, the gear failed on our last day close to help. Coming down the McKenzie Pass, I simply lost all power and that was it. There was no warning, the timing of the valves and ignition was lost and that was it. We managed to coast to the bottom of the Pass safely and then the Series I Land Rover support vehicle towed us to Fairlie (20 miles only) where we were able to arrange for a flatbed “taxi tow” truck to take us back to Christchurch. If one good thing can be taken from the failed gear is that it happened relatively close to the end of our tour and no long-term harm was done.

However, the organisation was excellent, with helpers handing out the necessary forms, and throughout the trip we were to find that, with some patience and word of mouth to find out which papers were needed in which office window, we always got through slowly but successfully. By then the sweep mechanics had caught up with us, and, to get us into camp, cabled tied on an electric pump fed from the fuel can on the running board. Later that night we mounted the pump at the rear below the fuel tank and wired it to the ignition and this turned out to work well and was the arrangement we used for the rest of the trip. Quite what was wrong with the mechanical pump/filter has yet to be determined. Thinking about it, I suspect we had an air leak into the filter, probably caused again by the local fuel, which contains a lot of alcohol. Mrs. Oklahoma with the 29 Roadster 10 Some of the Wonderful Motels along Route 66 OKLAHOMA by Marlene: With apologies to Einstein… “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different outcome.” Am I insane ??? This question plagued me as I sat for four hours in Minneapolis Airport waiting to fly to Oklahoma City. For another car meet. (I swore I would never do this again.) In fact, I wasn’t going for the car meet but just to drive back home to Toronto in steaming heat, omnipresent noise, with my husband. I didn’t want him to die alone on the highway. Insanity? Car Chick? Or fabulous beyond description, devoted, loving wife? Three days, 90+ degree heat, too many semis to count and I thought about all the questions I answered on car meets: What the hell to the two of you talk about for 10 hours a day? We don’t talk. We don’t say a word because a word could not be heard. The car’s engine makes so much noise you can’t hear yourself think, add to that the cacophony of endless semis on either side. So noisy you can’t even talk to yourself. Why do you keep doing it? Love or insanity How often do you stop? We stop every 100 miles for the car, for gas. We stop every fifty miles for a washroom. And, we stop every time we see a Dairy Queen or a Starbucks. Just saying. Where to you stay? Rules of the road apply. No Motel 6 or Motel 8. No no-names. However, this time we accidentally picked hotels that we had stayed at before and hated. We forgot how bad they were. So much for rules and old age memory. What most memorable sight? 1.The flooded fields. Its one thing to hear David Muir talk about them but to see them really makes you feel for the poor farmers. 2. Gazertainment: US Gas stations have turned themselves into entertainment shopping experiences. They now have “The Biggest Candy Store\", \"The Best Ozark Store\", \"The Circus Ring\" as well as gas. Can you hear it ? “Hey Hon lets go to Shell today?” Only in America. 3. Ya gotta love Chick Fil A. Want to make a Million ??? Its worth becoming a born-again Christian to get a franchise. It’s a license to print money. The crowds lining up were a sight to see.

FEATURE 29 BUICK STORIES ARNDT WIEGANG (27) writes: “I have a 29-27 made in Germany. Buick has been sleeping. I bought an old truck from a friend. The truck was in a hall for 30 years. On the day of the pickup, I looked at my friend's vintage cars and saw a prewar car in a corner. In passing I said that I would like something like that too. Now it was about 2 years ago and I forgot the car when I got a phone call. My friend needed space for his company and asked me if I wanted the car. Since I still had space, I agreed and got a deal with him. It's a 1929 Buick 29-27 Four Door 5 Passengers Sedan The car stood in the corner for about 42 years and was bought from the former GDR. The vehicle was assembled in Berlin Borsigwald and sold in the city of Chemnitz. The owner was a factory owner who had previously driven a 1925 Buick Tourer. After that, only the son had the vehicle. Nobody could tell me why the engine was partially disassembled. It could be that the engine was disassembled during the war so that the car was not drafted into the military.

I saw it, 29 BUICKS IN AUSTRALIA & NEW restoration underway, on my last trip there in ‘07. ZEALAND Marlene and I took off for our Australian and New Zealand adventure on Jan. 13 a little wary of the fires and volcanos that were burning and erupting. We landed in Melbourne’s lovely +35C temps. and could smell smoke but there were no fires to be seen from the center of the city. We met Canadian friends from Malaysia, attended the Australian Open tennis and had lunch with Bob Sheppard, who makes a number of reproduction parts for our 29’s, and his family. Bob Sheppard Phil Green’s just restored 29-49X From there we moved on to Sydney and stayed in a hotel overlooking the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera house.

The SILVER ANNIVERSARY BUICK NEWSLETTER goes out to owners of well over 300 1929 Buicks in all parts of the World.
