A person may have the gift of making other peoplelaugh but it takes guts and training to become asuccessful comedian. Anyone who thinks he isfunny enough to warrant a second look and to starta career in stand up comedy or in other fieldsshould take the necessary steps to improve hisperformance. Most comedians know how to make their own actsbecause almost everyone of them started theircareers as a one-man or one-woman company. Thismeans that doing comedy is a lonely job becauseit requires the comedian to conceptualize andwrite his own script and then act it out alone.People say that it is harder to make people laughthan to make them cry. This shows howchallenging the work of a comedian is especiallyif he has to perform at times when he doesn't evenfeel funny. Learning to do that is just one partof being a comedian.

Those who are just starting out their careers ascomedians should watch as many comedian shows aspossible. Watching other comedians performeither live or through recorded shows would givethe comedian a new insight which can help himimprove his performance.Watching comedian live shows, comedian movies andother endeavors involving comedians would helphim build his career out of the mistakes and thestrengths of his colleagues. There is a fineline between being funny and being gross andinsensitive and a comedian will only learn hismistakes by watching and observing theperformances of other comedians. There are different types of comedy and a comediancan choose to focus on any of these typesdepending on this tastes and capability toexecute the comedy. Some comedians can howeverget away with a mixture of these types of comedy.

A comedian can opt to do black comedy which isrelated to the dark side including death, rape andother stark realities of life. Some comediansprofit from imitating famous personalities, andexaggerating their quirks. Others however stickto the slapstick comedy which uses body movementsto tickle the funny bones of their audience.Once a comedian has chosen his forte then he canwatch other comedians and observe how theyperform. However, he should refrain fromcopying the techniques or the styles of othercomedians because this would make him a copycatand lessens his chances of becoming a success.
