t ♦Ai>i:SADVANCED ENERGY SYSTEMS 9.4 Safe Use of Webbing Slings Note I Canvas covered webbing slings are prohibited from use on all ADES operations due to the fact that it is not possible to visually check the physical condition of the inner braids. Webbing slings are lightweight, flexible, provide good grip and are easy to handle. However, they can be damaged very easily. • Never install over a sharp edge, always use suitable protection • Refer to manufacturers' instructions regarding exposure to chemicals i.e. webbing slings shall not be painted by using any relevant lifting color code • Refer to manufacturers' working temperatures, e.g. -40°C (-40°F) to S0°C (176°F) • Never tie a knot in the sling to shorten it or to join slings together • Never trap under the load while landing, use packing • Keep hands clear while tension is being applied Due to the high risk associated with using webbing slings, they shall be kept under lock and key in the STP office and their use subject to the issuing of a work permit. In addition, they shall be restricted to the following tasks only; lifting: • Delicate equipment or parts • Nonmagnetic, chrome or other metal coated tubulars and wire wrap screen joints • Cross overs and other subs, when purpose built lifting caps are not available Slings should be stored in clean, dry and well-ventilated conditions, at an ambient temperature, out of direct sunlight, as ultra-violet light exposure may degrade the material. The shelf life (unused or used) should also be confirmed with the manufacturer, as it may be as little as three years. 1t IBritish Standard Color-coding System I :2'.10t Purple ---,- 2t 3t 4t Green Yellow Grey Red Brown Blue 9.5 Webbing Sling lnspectionn Check: Ensure: Reject for: • Stitching is intact / unbroken • Missing markings / labels • Webbing body • UV damage • Eyes • Excessive localized abrasion, • Stitching • Accessories, for example holes, tears or cuts • Excessive elongation hooks, links, assemblies, etc. • Broken stitching • Chemical and / or thermal damage • Damage to accessories • Unequal leg lengths • Unauthorized modifications - Floorman Handbook ©2019ADES.AIIRights
