There are many issues affecting our city that HandsOn Hong Kong addresses through our volunteerprograms including: Environment: Pollution is top of mind when it comes to environmental issues impacting our citizens each day—in 2014 more than 2,600 people in Hong Kong died from air pollution6. Additionally, other environmental issues impact us daily, including the more than 3,600 tons of food that is wasted each day—all while 300,000 Hong Kong children do not get 3 meals a day 7. Further, 2 million bars of soap are discarded from hotels in Hong Kong each year—that’s over 60,000kg of waste per year 8. People with Disabilities: The Hong Kong government reports that 5.2% of the population in Hong Kong has a physical disability, but their figure does not include people with intellectual disabilities. 69.2% of people with physical disabilities have received only primary education or below 9. Ethnic Minorities: 46% of ethnic minority youth (aged 13-19) stop attending school before Secondary Five, with language barriers being one of the main reasons 10.Refugee and Asylum Seekers: Refugees are not eligible to work in Hong Kong. Instead, theyreceive only a small housing allowance from the government in order to survive in one of themost expensive cities in the world—HK$1,200 for an adult and HK$600 for a child 11.Women and Migrant Workers: Research in Hong Kong, interviewing some 3,000 femaledomestic helpers indicated 58% have faced verbal abuse, 18% physical abuse and 6% sexualabuse 12.Animal Welfare: An estimated 5,000 to 7,000 stray dogs are abandoned annually 13. Forthese dogs, they end up euthanized unless they are fortunate enough to enter the care of anorganization with a no-kill policy, such as Hong Kong Dog Rescue.6 Clean Air network - www.hongkongcan.org 11 Christian Action - http://www.christian-action.org.hk/images/HK/refugees/Report/Advocacy.pdf7 Food Angel - wwwfo.odangel.org.hk 12 Blundy, Rachel. “Hong Kong Domestic Helpers: Doubts Expressed about Viability of8 Soap Cycling- www.soapcycling.org Government Code of Practice for Maid Agencies.” South China Morning Post. They assist in the soup delivery services in our center every two months, and also subsidize the purchase of soup ingredients. They have provided us with volunteers and the soups served to the elderly in this event. Many elderly expressed their liking for the visits and the soups served during the event. Moreover, they have also visited farms with the elderly, and organized digital camera classes in our center. These activities have allowed the elderly to learn about different things. I think volunteers can learn that elderly in different locations have different characteristics, as well as different needs. Lastly, I am thankful and delighted to be able to work with HandsOn Hong Kong, because their assistance can let old folks from On Ting Estate and Yau Oi Estate feel that the community still cares about and for them. PERNOD RICARD“Pernod Ricard Asia Travel Retail has been partnering with HandsOn Hong Kong for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in the past years, with the aim to let employees understand more about the community and to contribute back to the society, as this is a value which we promote a lot in the company. In the past years, hundreds of employees engaged in serving local causes including elderly, kids with intellectual disability, environmental protection etc. The most recent CSR activity was beach cleaning with the mentally disabled kids. Our employees played games with the kids as warm up session and we were able to connect with the kids as a team very quickly. When we were doing beach cleaning, we could feel how passionate the kids were in competing with each other to be the winners—collecting as much rubbish as they could. We then had BBQ with the kids. Many of the kids enjoyed it a lot as this was their first time having BBQ. It was really a great chance getting to know the kids with special needs. Our employees enjoyed the day a lot as they felt the “human touch” with the kids. We look forward to participating in more CSR activity organized by HandsOn Hong Kong. We would like to thank HandsOn Hong Kong for providing a platform for us to get connected with the community with smooth planning by them, much appreciated!Celine Ho, Human Resources Manager, Business Partner & Talent DevelopmentHandsOn Hong Kong Annual Report 2015 37

OUR SOCIAL ENTERPRISE:FRUIT FOR GOOD

FRUIT FOR GOODIn Hong Kong, people with disabilities are often not visible in the community. A lack of understandingand accessibility in the city has generally left the people with disabilities shunned from thegeneral public. An estimated 2-4% of Hong Kong’s population has an intellectual disability, and these individuals are often left out of the workforce due to a lack of appropriate trainingand job opportunities. To address this issue, HandsOn Hong Kong was awarded a grant from Operation Santa Claus in2014 to develop an innovative social enterprise, called Fruit For Good. Its goal was to increase theintegration of intellectually disabled (ID) adults into society, while also facilitating healthyeating habits in the workplace. The initiative aimed to employ ID Delivery Assistants to deliverfresh fruit to offices on a weekly basis. One month pilot studies were conducted in 2014 and 2015 to test the viability of the concept. In 2016,Fruit For Good will officially launch under a new name—Eat For Good—with a more comprehensiveapproach: this program facilitates social inclusion between professionals, intellectuallydisabled (ID) adults, and underprivileged elderly in Hong Kong. Combining elements ofresponsible procurement, philanthropy, and volunteering, this \"BUY ONE, GIVE ONE\" initiativeprovides healthy and wholesome snacks packed and delivered by ID adults to companies andnutritious Chinese soup delivered by volunteers to disadvantaged elderly.HandsOn Hong Kong Annual Report 2015 46
