SAICE and The Descent of the Overman Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. February 2019. Guiding Light of the Month Thou art the impassable barrier set up against the excess of evil, darkness and ill-will; Thou art the living hope in every heart of all possible and future perfections. To Thee all the fervour of my adoration. Thou art the gateway within reach of our conception leading to unsuspected and inconceivable splendours, splendours which will be revealed to us progressively. The Mother, ‘Prayers and Meditations’ January 29, 1914 In this February edition of our newsletter, we continue From the Editor’s Desk from where we left off in the last edition. The focus she declares the descent to be “superman consciousness” remains double-themed: SAICE and the 50th anniversary or the overman or ‘surhomme’ consciousness. When of the descent of Overman Consciousness. In a way, these asked whether this consciousness was to be something two concepts are inter-related, it appears. Sri Aurobindo’s that “will suffuse the bodies that are ready?” The yoga looks towards the future far far away from the ashes Mother replied in the affirmative, “Yes, I believe so, of the past. The evolution of life upon earth has to yes. I have the feeling that it is the formation which is overpass the man seated at the top of the tree of evolution going to enter, going to express itself — to enter and currently, into a supermanhood that would pave the way express itself — in the bodies... that will be the bodies to the expression of the Divine Decree in creation and of the supramental.” existence. Sri Aurobindo offers education as an aid towards the preparation of the race for this future. SAICE How are the bodies to be made ready? SAICE is that is a conception that evolved from this foresight. On 24th laboratory in which the experiment may well be April 1951, during the inauguration of the Sri Aurobindo underway, laboriously but steadily, not en-masse but Memorial Convention The Mother declared: selectively; perhaps not only SAICE but other centres conceived of with similar aspiration and dedication. “Sri Aurobindo is present in our midst, and with all the The month of February is beginning to appear over the power of his creative genius he presides over the formation of the University Centre which for years he horizon, bringing with it another long awaited dawn, The considered as one of the best means of preparing the Mother’s 141st Birth Anniversary on February 21st, 2019. future humanity to receive the supramental light that will transform the elite of today into a new race manifesting It gives us a golden opportunity to remember The upon earth the new light and force and life. SAICE sets up an atmosphere for the children of the future that what she wants of us. In a crystal clear message directed spells out clearly the purposefulness of life and how the at all of us aspiring to walk this path, She says, “ Give child himself discovers for himself the aim of life, both in general and of his specific role in his own life in realising all you are, all you have; nothing more is asked of you this purpose in his own life. She speaks of the experience but also nothing less.” It will do good to contemplate of a distinct descent that happened on the 1st of January 1969. Days later, on the 8th of January, on this message of The Mother to all her children. In this message is the indication of the path, it seems, and how to traverse that path. It calls for an all encompassing, unconditional surrender of all of one’s existence, it seems. However, The Mother’s yoga is such and this call, only a natural summons to all her children, is it not? www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 2 SAICE

SAICE and The Descent of the Overman Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. February 2019. The Vision and the Boon I saw the Omnipotent’s flaming pioneers Over the heavenly verge which turns towards life Come crowding down the amber stairs of birth; Forerunners of a divine multitude, Out of the paths of the morning star they came Into the little room of mortal life. I saw them cross the twilight of an age, The sun-eyed children of a marvellous dawn, The great creators with wide brows of calm, The massive barrier-breakers of the world And wrestlers with destiny in her lists of will, The labourers in the quarries of the gods, The messengers of the Incommunicable, The architects of immortality. Into the fallen human sphere they came, Faces that wore the Immortal’s glory still, Voices that communed still with the thoughts of God, Bodies made beautiful by the spirit’s light, Carrying the magic word, the mystic fire, Carrying the Dionysian cup of joy, Approaching eyes of a diviner man, Lips chanting an unknown anthem of the soul, Feet echoing in the corridors of Time. SAICE and The Descent of the Overman Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. February 2019. The History of the Ashram School by Prof. Kittu Reddy Part 2 [continued….] But more importantly, from 1959, the overall structure and organisation of the Centre of Education was laid down. Here are some of the main developments that took place during this period: 1. The Higher Course was restructured. It was divided into the Art and Science sections. Earlier, there was no clear demarcation between art and science courses. From this point on, like in other institutions, art students and science students were divided into two distinct categories with different compulsory subjects. At the same time, two other courses were introduced, the Common Course which was compulsory for all students and the Optional course open to both Art and Science students; in the Common course, both Arts and Science students had compulsorily to study selected books of Sri Aurobindo. There were five books in this course, The Ideal of Human Unity, The Human Cycle, The Foundations of Indian Culture, The Life Divine and The Synthesis of Yoga. These were studied for one year. Thus all students of the Higher course had to study these 5 books spread over the three years . In the first year, The Ideal of Human Unity was studied, in the second year, it was The Human Cycle and The Foundations of Indian Culture, and in the third year, The Life Divine and The Synthesis of Yoga. But in the Optional Course, the same books were studied over a period of two or three years. This more intensive study of the books was optional and was open to both Science and Art students. Each one of these books was studied after a preparatory course; thus for the book The Ideal of Human Unity there was a course on World History; for The Human Cycle, there was a course on Sociology, for The Life Divine there was course on Philosophy, both Western and Indian, forThe Synthesis of Yoga, the course was History of Religions and for The Foundations of Indian Culture, a study of Indian History was added. 2. It was also during this period that the Boards for all subjects were constituted. Thus there was an English board, a French board, a Mathematics board and so on. A group of teachers was selected to form the Boards and these teachers overlooked all the details concerning their respective subjects. Their work was mainly to define the syllabus, the course, the text books and to monitor the overall performance of the students and teachers in their subjects. 3. A whole new system of evaluation was determined. This system was based on the following: Regularity, punctuality, behaviour, homeworks, class tests and quarterly tests. This last item – quarterly tests was introduced in 1959. All students of the secondary and the Higher course were to sit for tests four times a year, reduced from 1960 to three times a year. These tests conducted over a period of two weeks, were held at the end of March, June and October. The test for more important subjects like English, French, Mathematics etc were of three hours each, while for the other subjects they were of one and a half hour each. The results of the quarterly tests had a great bearing on the evaluation of the students. Quite naturally, these tests were a period of great tension for the students, for the results were given great weight in the final evaluation of the student. As I was working in the administrative office at that time, I was entrusted with the organisation of the Quarterly Tests. My duties consisted of the following tasks. www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 4 SAICE

SAICE and The Descent of the Overman Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. February 2019. 1. Fixing the dates, the timings, the rooms and the invigilators for the tests. 2. Collecting the question papers at least ten days in advance from all the teachers and getting them typed in strict confidentiality and finally distributing them to the concerned invigilators just before the commencement of the test. 3. Handing over the answer papers of the students to the respective teachers after completion of the test . 4. Getting the results of the tests from the teachers in the form of marks allotted and computing the final quarterly report for each student. The report for each student was based on the following principle: 40% marks were allotted to the Quarterly Tests, 30% marks were allotted to Class Tests, 20% marks were allotted to Home Works, and the remaining 10% marks were given to Regularity, Punctuality and Behaviour. Evidently, it was quite a complicated exercise and entailed a fair amount of work and coordination among teachers and the administration. This was a period of great tension for most students and slowly and in a sense, quite inevitably, certain tendencies started manifesting themselves right from the beginning in 1960 and began to take serious proportions in the later years. These included copying from notebooks which the students smuggled into the test room, trying to find out the questions before the tests, and sometimes even tearing whole pages from the text books which they managed to smuggle into the test room. In 1967, while invigilating a class, a student was found copying. I just tapped the boy on his shoulder but did not chide him or speak to anybody else; instead, I wrote a letter to the Mother. Here is an extract from the letter: (Concerning cheating in tests) What should I do? Must we do what is done outside— put three teachers in a room to invigilate? The teachers do not like doing things in this way here in the Ashram. Or should we abolish tests? I find this proposal doubtful, since the same thing happens with homework and essays. In any case the problem exists, and in order to find the real solution we should understand why the children behave like this. Please tell me the cause of this misbehaviour and the solution to this problem. Mother sent me a reply immediately reproduced here in full. It is very simple. It is because most of the children study because they are compelled to do so by their families, by custom and prevalent ideas, and not because they want to learn and know. As long as their motive for studying is not rectified, as long as they do not work because they want to know, they will find all kinds of tricks to make their work easier and to obtain results with a minimum of effort. June 1967 She also added that a prayer should be repeated each day by all the students. Here is the prayer. To be repeated each day by all the students: It is not for our family, it is not to secure a good position, it is not to earn money, it is not to obtain a diploma, that we study. We study to learn, to know, to understand the world, and for the sake of the joy that it gives us. www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 5 SAICE

SAICE and The Descent of the Overman Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. February 2019. June 1967 Later, She wrote to me another letter regarding the Quarterly tests. We reproduce it in full. The whole question is to know whether the students go to school to increase their knowledge and to learn what is necessary how to live well or whether they go to school to pretend and to have good marks of which they can boast. In front of the Eternal Consciousness, a drop of sincerity has more value than an ocean of pretension and hypocrisy. [… to be continued] […..continuation] Reflections on 1 January 1969, by Jared Quek ‘Very material…very external’ On 29 February 1956, during the first manifestation of the supramental consciousness at the Playground meditation, apparently nobody besides the Mother herself was conscious of what had happened. As K.D. Sethna (Amal Kiran) wrote in Aspects of Sri Aurobindo: ‘When I came back from the Supermind [i.e. after she had shattered the Golden Door] I thought that, since the outpour was so stupendous, everybody would be lying prostrate. But when I opened my eyes I found everybody sitting quietly and perfectly unconscious of what had happened.’ (p.20) The Mother later told Sethna: ‘What I said was not that four people knew it to be the supramental Manifestation, but that when the Manifestation took place they had some unusual experiences because of it, even if they didn’t understand why…’ (pp.117-8) Indeed, the Mother had predicted in 1951: ‘It may very well happen that at a given moment the supramental Force manifests, that it is conscious here, that it acts on Matter, but that those who don’t consciously participate in its vibration are incapable of perceiving it. People say: “When the supramental force manifests, we shall know it quite well. It will be seen.” Not necessarily. They will not feel it any more than those people of little sensitivity who may pass through this place [the Sri Aurobindo Ashram], even live here, without feeling that the atmosphere is different from elsewhere’ (CWM, 4, p.223). Indeed, the tremendous outpouring of the supramental force that the Mother and Sri Aurobindo had sought to achieve since the beginning went unnoticed even by the sadhaks closest to them. It was all the more remarkable that in 1969, the Mother avowed that ‘I was not the only one to feel it [the New Consciousness], some others also have felt it’. Indeed, ‘it spread out and went about to find people who could receive it’. Many disciples had remarkable experiences in the coming months: Of late, I am constantly feeling, flowing in my system from above, a Force which I concretely experience like a sweet fluid. It flows continuously in my whole system and, from time to time, I feel completely drenched and saturated with it. It gives a very pleasant and soothing sensation. It is as if some sort of Ananda is flowing in me from above. It gives a sweet taste in the mouth. I do not know what exactly this experience means. Is it the New Consciousness which You have said came on the 1st January this year? Or is it some new descent which has recently occurred? Or is it something personal to me only? It is the Consciousness that is at work since January. But its action has become much more intense. www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 6 SAICE

SAICE and The Descent of the Overman Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. February 2019. Letter of the Mother, dated 26 November 1969 It was no accident the Mother described this Consciousness as being very ‘external…material…concrete’. It is something that acts ‘directly on the body’, bypassing the psychic and inner being. Being something that works directly on the external consciousness of humanity, many more were conscious of its action than during the invisible outpouring of 1956. The Force has practically a physical presence. This is an astonishing fact. The New Consciousness, as Van Vrekhem has argued, is almost certainly a formation of the same supramental consciousness that came in 1956 and not an ‘inferior’ emanation. There are many reasons for this—not least was the Mother viewing this Force as a ‘mentor’ when she had been collaborating with the supramental consciousness in her yoga for many years. There was also her explicit description of the Consciousness as la conscience du surhomme. The nature of the New Consciousness indicated just how quickly things had moved in the 13 years since the supramental manifestation. Instead of working invisibly behind many layers of the human consciousness, the Work of the Mother had allowed the supramental force to touch the body, and not just her body, directly. The New Consciousness is the supramental, made accessible. The Mentor of the Body ‘To this end, all the [supramental] consciousness which is in these cells has to assemble, to organize itself and to form a conscious being which is able to be conscious of Matter and at the same time of the Supramental. This is what is being done. How far will we be able to go? I don’t know. I do not say that this body will be able to transform itself, I see no sign of this. But there is the consciousness, the physical consciousness, the material consciousness which becomes supramentalized. This is the work that is going on. This is what is important.’ Mother’s Agenda, 26 April 1972 In the 1960s and 1970s in particular, and as recorded extensively in the Agenda, the Mother was engaging in the ‘yoga of the cells’, the supramentalisation of her body consciousness. This, in other words, constitute her effort to form the ‘prototype of the supramental body’—the first New Body constituted of a supramental/material substance that is conscious of both Matter and the supramental (Georges Van Vrekhem, Overman: The intermediary between the human and the supramental being, p.165). Naturally, this body will first exist in what Sri Aurobindo has called the ‘subtle physical’, the plane that is the direct source and archetype of physical realities. As the Mother’s adventure of consciousness was unprecedented, she had no guide and she had to go through enormous sufferings and struggles. The importance of 1 Jan 1969 is that the New Consciousness, a formation of the supramental, became her ‘mentor’ and ‘guide’ in this Work. We can justly believe that the Descent helped her work immensely, and 3 years later, she gave a description of what appears to be the formed New Body (Notes on the Way, 25 March 1972): ‘It was for the first time. It was at four o’clock in the morning, I believe. It was quite natural — I did not look in a mirror, I was quite natural. I remember only what I saw (gesture from the chest to the waist). I had only a veil on me, so I saw only... it was the trunk that was quite different from the chest down to the waist: neither man nor woman. And it was pretty. I had a form very, very slim, very slender — very slender but not thin…. Simply, it was neither the body of a woman nor the body of a man — that is clear. And the “outline”, the silhouette, was almost the same as that of a very, very young person. There was a sort of semblance to human forms (Mother sketches it in the air), there was a shoulder and a figure. As though the semblance of a form. It must be like that in the subtle physical. www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 7 SAICE

SAICE and The Descent of the Overman Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. February 2019. The two things very, very different: first, procreation, of which there was no possibility there; secondly, the food….Evidently, what will change very much, which had become very important, was breathing. It is upon this that this being greatly depended.’ By the Mother’s tremendous efforts, and the empowering descent of 1969, the first subtle body of the ‘new species’ that Sri Aurobindo spoke of had been created. We can trust that this momentous and yet mostly unknown achievement will greatly help the world transformation that is ongoing – for its physical manifestation is only a matter of time: A few shall see what none yet understands; God shall grow up while the wise men talk and sleep; For man shall not know the coming till its hour And belief shall be not till the work is done. Savitri (1:4) The Overman : The Intermediary Species From the new race would be recruited the race of supramental beings who would appear as the leaders of the evolution in earth-nature. Sri Aurobindo: Essays in Philosophy and Yoga, p. 585. In The Supramental Manifestation on Earth, a collection of Sri Aurobindo’s final essays, he wrote about the need of intermediary beings between man and the supramental being. The defining feature of this ‘intermediary’ is that while they will have an illumined consciousness (of various degrees up to the supramental) they would have ‘a body still human and indeed animal in its origin and fundamental character and this would impose its own inevitable limitations on the higher parts of the embodied being.’ (Sri Aurobindo: Essays in Philosophy and Yoga, p. 537). This will thus be ‘a first sketch of super- manhood, of a supramental living in the circumstances of the earth-nature’ (p.537). The Mother confirmed this: It can be affirmed with certainty that there will be an intermediate specimen between the mental and the supramental being, a kind of overman who will still have the qualities and in part the nature of man, which means that he will still belong in his most external form to the human being of animal origin, but that he will transform his consciousness sufficiently to belong, in his realisation and activity, to a new race, a race of overmen. The Mother: Questions and Answers 1957-58, p. 277, Van Vrekhem’s translation Thus, on 4 January 1969, when the Mother mentioned that the New Consciousness is that of the surhomme, the ‘intermediary between man and the supramental being’—she was saying that the Consciousness of this transitional species had descended and was powerfully acting. Van Vrekhem is surely right in consistently translating surhomme as ‘overman’, instead of ‘superman’, as found in most other editions (including The Notes on the Way cited above). The surhomme is not the fully formed supramental being in a supramental body. The surhomme or overman is the human species perfected, and at its highest, supramentalised. Or, as the Mother described it in 1969, ‘a human in divine proportions..a human without weaknesses and without shadows’. […to be continued] www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 8 SAICE

SAICE and The Descent of the Overman Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. February 2019. January Sunday Activities at the Centre - A glimpse January 6th - Passages from All India Magazine-January 2018 issue – A New Dawn We gathered on this peaceful Sunday evening to gain some glimpses of guidance from the newsletter issued on January 2018. Following meditation, we contemplated on the New Year Messages sent out by The Mother. These messages were sent out from the year 1933 following The Mother’s serene Organ music as midnight struck. What could be the purpose of these? What inner meanings were behind them? How can we benefit? We chose a passage where The Mother explains that during wartime, the messages held in them prophesies. The times may have changed now. However, in that context, she was referring to in the passage, she was highlighting the need for less publicity of works taken up in the ashram and on the contrary, one should speak less and take up the work and ‘do it’. The following message issued in 1969, also the year of the descent of the Overman, instils a very poignant message in three words: No words - act January 13th – The Human Cycle – Chapter XXII – The Necessity of the Spiritual Transformation The session on 13th Jan was a continuation of December 2018 session on the Necessity of the Spiritual Transformation. Sri Aurobindo acknowledges the German Philosopher Neitzche’s idea “that to develop the superman out of our present very unsatisfactory manhood is our real business”, as a sound teaching. Sri Aurobindo further elaborates by saying that the creation of the Divine Life of man, can be established, not by the Intellect and Will, but the supreme thing in us (Divine spark), which is beyond Reason, the spirit, which currently is hidden in our lower nature. When “discovered and delivered”, it will be “luminous above the mind”, upon which the divine life of the human being can be with “security” founded. Sri Aurobindo adds that though man is infinitely greater than the plant and animal, and in his highest, half-god, is not perfect in his own nature like the plant and animal. This imperfection is not a thing to be deplored, but rather a privilege and a promise, for it opens to man an immense vista of self- development and self-exceeding, and the possibility of realising his full potential, the whole god. We will continue reading this chapter in subsequent weeks. - Jayanthy and Ramachandran PROGRAMME FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY 2019 DATE TIME DETAILS 8 AM Monthly Morning Walk * 3 Feb 2019 Sunday 6 PM AIM Magazine Reading and Discussion 10 Feb 2019 6 PM Thematic Study Circle Part I : Sunday The Human Cycle www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 9 SAICE

The location for this month’s walk was MacRitchie Reservoir, which is located near Bishan. I live in the east, making the park a little far for me, so I had to wake up quite early. I am usually not punctual for the morning walks, so I am proud to say that this time I was on time! We reached the meeting point at MacRitchie Reservoir at around 8am. The first half of the walk was along the boardwalk, which was directly beside the reservoir. We had to be careful while walking on it as the boardwalk was quite narrow and right next to the water without any railings for safety. However, the water was not that deep at the sides of the reservoir, so it was still safe. The scenery during the walk was simply beautiful. The deep blue water in the reservoir was still, barely moving, except for the occasional ripple. The sky was a soft blue, peppered with soft white clouds, creating a beautiful image. MacRitchie Reservoir is a park with many activities, so it is expected to be bustling and vibrant. However, the part of the park we were walking through was rather quiet. Most people were either walking or jogging, with their earphones plugged into their ears. However, we were a joyous bunch, chattering, and full of spirit. After approximately 45 minutes, we reached the end of the boardwalk and the path changed to one that was more rugged. There were many fallen leaves on the floor, so we had to be careful not to slip on any of them. The route consisted of both uphill and downhill slopes, making it rather tiring. Some of the sections were awfully steep so we had to be careful. After about another 45 minutes of return walking, we finally made it back to the starting point. Following that, we went to Uncle Rama and Aunty Jayanthy’s house for prayers and brunch and had some delicious food. Overall, this walk was one that was beautiful and relaxing, definitely a good start to the new year! - Priyanka Patel www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 11 SAICE
