● derm/o -skin Integumentary System ● kerat/o -horn like tissue ● xer/o -dry ❏ Consisting of the hair, skin and nails and providing protection from the outside world ● xanth/o -yellow while also excreting bodily fluids. ● erythr/o -red ● pedicu/o -fingernail or toenail ❏ Vocab: epidermis (outermost layer of skin), dermis (second layer of skin that forms ● onych/o -nails skin and contains all of the main structures in the skin like nerves and hair follicles), ● myc/o -fungus hypodermis (lowest layer of skin containing fat and connecting skin to muscle and ● pil/o -hair bone), keratinocytes (primary cell in epidermis protecting from environmental ● lip/o -fat factors like parasites and UV rays), melanocyte (cell in the epidermis that brings ● rhytid/o -wrinkle pigment), cellular extensions (structure of cell that extends from the main membrane ● albin/o -white for protection), langerhan cells (cell found mainly in the dermis for immune protection), merkel cells (cells found around hair follicles that interpret sensation), thick skin (skin with thinner dermis layer that does not grow hair including palms and bottoms of feet), thin skin (skin that has thin epidermis layer and produces hair and sweat), stratum lucidum (thin layer of dead skin cells found in thick skin to make layering and prevent bruising), avascular (our skin grows outwards and the lowest layer survives with a lack of blood vessels), stratum basale (fifth layer of the dermis layer that attaches the dermis to hypodermis and creation of new cells). ❏ Diseases and disorders include: onychophagia (nail biting), melanosis (excessive amount of melanin in the skin), vitiligo (blotches of skin without pigment), onychomycosis (nail fungus) and miliaria (heat rash caused by blocked sweat).. ❏ Professions include: dermatologists (specialists in skin) and cosmetic surgeons (surgically restore skin) TRACK 2: “Haircut”- Ryan Beatty

● my/o -muscle Musculoskeletal System ● myel/o -marrow ● oste/o -bone ❏ Consists of all muscles and bones and allowing for the structure and movement ● cost/o -rib of our bodies. ● crani/o -skull ● -pexy -surgical fixation ❏ Vocab: ligaments (connective tissue that connects bone to bone), tendons ● chondr/o -cartilage (connective tissue that connects bone to muscle), bone marrow (spongy tissue ● arthr/o -joint that makes blood forming cells), voluntary muscles (muscles that we control the ● -plegia -pain movement of), involuntary muscles (muscles that we don’t control the ● kinesi/o -motion movement of), cartilage (firm but flexible connective tissue that both connects and fully forms structures of our bodies), joints (area where two or more bones meet), fixed joints (joints that do not move at all), semimoble joints (joints that have a restricted path and area of movement), mobile joints (joints that allow a wide range of movement). ❏ Diseases and disorders include: Carpal tunnel (weakness and numbness in hand caused by pressure on median nerve), Myocarditis (the inflammation of the heart muscle), Myelofibrosis (cancer of the bone marrow), Chondrosarcoma (malignant cancer in cartilage producing cells). ❏ Professions include: Rheumatologist (specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders within the muscular system) and Orthopedic surgeons (specializes in diagnosing and treating joint and bone disorders). ● neur/o -nerve Nervous System ● encephal/o -head ● myel/o -marrow ❏ Consists of the brain and spinal cord, transmits signals through the body and keeps ● ambul/o -to walk control of the sensory actions. ● -esthesia -sensitivity ● mening/o -meninges ❏ Vocab: sensory input (sensational feelings), integration (processing of sensory ● psych/o -psyche input), motor output (physical reaction to sensory input), central nervous system ● concuss/o -shaken (main part including brain and spinal cord), peripheral nervous system (accompanying nerves apart from cns), somatic nervous system (voluntary motor movements like skeletal and muscle movement), autonomic nervous system (involuntary movements like heart, lungs and digestive system), neuron (nerve cells that transmit stimuli), glial cells (provide nutrition and pathway of transmission within nervous system), astrocytes (type of glial cell that exchanges materials between neurons and capillaries). ❏ Diseases and disorders include: epilepsy (nerve activity in the brain is disturbed causing seizures), alzheimer’s (disease that progressively destroys memory and other mental capabilities), parkinson’s (disorder that affects movement mostly causing tremors), cerebral palsy (congenital disorder affecting body movement and coordination). ❏ Professions include: neurologist (specialist in study, diagnosis and treatment of the nervous system) and neurosurgeon (specialist in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of the nervous system). ● irid/o -iris Special Senses ● -cusis -hearing problem ● -opia -defects in vision ● ot/o -ear ❏ Defined as senses that have specialized organs with them including the ears, nose, ● tympan/o -eardrum mouth and eyes. ● opthalm/o -eye ❏ Vocab: transduction (when sensory cells translate stimuli into action potentials), ● -metry -to measure photoreceptors (detection of light waves), mechanoreceptors (detection of sound waves and pressure), chemoreceptors (detection of molecules in food and air), gustation (taste), olfaction (smell), gustatory cells (cells in tongue that taste), tympanic cavity (middle ear that amplifies sound), vestibular apparatus (structures within inner angled at all planes for balance). ❏ Diseases and Disorders: astigmatism (imperfection in the eye’s curvature causing blurry vision), microphthalmia (one or both eyes are malformed or abnormally small), blindness (the inability to see anything including light), deafness (the inability to understand speech and sometimes detect sound at all). ❏ Professions include: ophthalmologist (diagnoses and treats all eye diseases including surgery) and otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor).
