Enhancing Skills A workshop can introduce a new concept, spurring participants to investigate it further on their own, or can demonstrate and encourage the practice of actual methods. It's a great way to teach hands-on skills because it offers participants a chance to try out new methods and fail in a safe situation. Such exercises like workshops do help students in understanding and learning different ways of thinking and solving parameters with more exposure to a large mass. 77

Once there lived a man (Dave) who was His dad, who passed away twenty years ago, immensely extremely smart because couldn’t help but watch the show, he went to Harvard and got a degree and while he giggled in his grave, in the arts and sciences, as you can see. he knew he had a lane to pave. But this came with a very high price He dug out of his grave, since he was so very wise he came out of the cave, if anyone dared to disagree he had to fix his son, poor Dave. he would whip out his prestigious degree He walked at a steady pace, and teach them a lesson or two. he would definitely win the race between him and the dead folk back in the cave case. But as he grew much much older, his brain became much much colder, He knocked on the door and said and his memory became way too foggy “hey Dave it’s me your dad, and his knowledge wasn’t far from soggy. I couldn’t believe what you just had It was his birthday that day. said, and I think you’re going mad”. the day began a special way, his nephew, his niece, his wife and children Dave realized it’s actually his dad back with his soul, came to him with an offer for a pilgrim, not some bozo knocking and being a troll. for he had become quite tall and weighty, he was now celebrating his age of eighty. What happened flashed in his eyes, the memories he had and making the strawberry pies, He yelled as loud as he could, “eighty!” “That’s like, uh, two more than forty!” his dad helped him prepare the rice, His wife said, “no dear, eighty is rather late and took him to bicycle in the yard, for it’s not two more than forty, rather seventy-eight! And even let him borrow his credit card. He quickly took his degree out, The same dad who helped him achieve, “do you see this?” he starts to shout, had come from the dead, he could not believe. “proves me’s a professional” he pouts. He looked his half-dead dad dead in his eyes, “Look, I know you don’t want to be corrected, he looked at the amount of flies but ‘me’s’ a wrong usage of the English language. Now we’ll cut the cake, just finish off your sandwich” his dad had collected and to this dad who looked so grim, who came from the dead to correct him, Look, I don’t care, but I know I’m always right in maths! His nephew, Tim Skad, says he sees the wrath he looked him carefully and broke into song, “you buffoon, you freak! I’m not wrong, I’m never wrong!” in his eyes, and he tries but he couldn’t correct him. He whipped out his degree and his award from the spelling But to be fair, he tried, didn’t he - little Tim? bees, His niece put in effort too to correct him, and said, “ come back and speak to me only when you have but ended with the same result one of these!” and was faced with the same insult. Daryl Shuju Mathew (Grade VII) Dave was really angry now, but couldn’t forget his chivalry degree 85 and said, “Can we just cut the cake and drink the tea?”

A Lockdown Story The story is about how corona changed the entire life pattern of Pruthivi. Pruthivi is a very active boy whose father is working in Bahrain, so he pursued his schooling in Bahrain Indian School. He was studying in 1st grade and was in his last term. The annual exam was scheduled for 1st March, but on 26th Feb his mother got a message from school, stating that the school will be closed from 27th Feb. Here is his conversation with his mom Mother: Pruthivi, tomorrow onwards school is closed. Pruthivi: Why mom? Mother: We heard about coronavirus which started in China in December, now it is slowly spreading here too, to avoid children getting affected from it they are closing schools. Pruthivi: Oh, how did it come here, mom? Mother: People are traveling to different parts of the world, so it is spreading all over the world. Pruthivi: Does it spread? Mother: Yes, it does. Pruthivi: How does it spread, mom? Mother: It can spread through the air, water and the objects which are touched by the infected person. Pruthivi: Oh, what are the precautionary measures to be taken to avoid getting infected with COVID 19? Mother: Maintaining self-hygiene and social distancing will stop the spread of covid19. So, we must wash our hands for twenty seconds, if we touch anything in the commonplace. The doctor has advised us to wear a mask, hand gloves while going out from our home. Pruthivi: Wow, Jolly then this evening I will go to my friend’s house and play with them in the park. Mother: No dear! We cannot go out anywhere, except for groceries, hospitals, and other mandatory work. He was fully locked in the house and was feeling bored. He thought that the school will reopen in a couple of weeks. But the virus started spreading rapidly, hence the school management announced that the final exams will be cancelled, and the previous exam marks will be considered for promotion. Though he was happy to hear this but was missing his sightseeing through his school van window, games he played with his friends in the van, PE classes, and the school atmosphere. The next academic year also arrived. Parents were quite worried about kids' schooling. Fortunately, the school management decided to take online classes. Initially, Pruthivi faced some issues while attending online classes. Later, he started to enjoy the same. The teachers took great effort and prepared online classes exactly like how it happens in school. Finally, the most awaited summer vacation arrived. Since all the flights from Bahrain were cancelled to other countries, he felt disappointed he could not visit his native place to meet his grandparents and relatives. He thought, “At least I can visit my friends, parks, and play area”, but unfortunately mom strictly said “No!” to all. He prayed that everything should get back to normal. He promised to save and do something to bring back the environment as a lively place for future generations. If we don’t protect our environment then we are going to run short of natural resources. The most important lesson he learned was to plant more trees to get more oxygen as Corona is killing people due to the lack of oxygen once they get infected. Save Environment, Save Earth, and Love everyone. STAY HOME STAY SAFE Pruthivi Siva Kumar (Grade II Thames) 86

Few incidents are perennially etched in our memories. One such incident happened when I was very young, just 6 years old. And the location was the famous Wahoo Water Park in City Centre mall. It was the first time I went to a water park. There were very few rides for my age group, but the rides I could access were fun. I went into the lazy pool. In this, we just need to stay still and lie flat on a rubber tyre and the water would take us to the other end of the pool, slowly and lazily, as the name suggests. Next, I went to a small blue slide with my parents where you fall inside a small Once there was a magical pot floating in the river. A poor water pool at the end. Then my parents and I ate lunch in the food hungry man was crossing the river. He took the magical pot court and visited the outdoor area of Wahoo. and he was so happy. He walked to his home. Then he saw When I reached outside, I heard many sounds like the laughter of some money on the table. He took the money and put the people, the sound of the gushing water from the slides, the DJ money in the magical pot. Then for a second, he was playing some music, the cool breeze, etc. The outdoor area starts surprised. The money has started increasing. Thus, he with a huge pool on the right, some slides to the left, a DJ playing became a rich man. music with his equipment on one side, and a seating area where Daivika Dev (Grade I Silver) around 5 or 6 people were skating. In the first 3 parts, you slide of rooms and was spacious compared to our flat so I looked for some time then walk around 5 feet, and then go to the next around everywhere. We came back home but from that day slide. In the 4th part, the slide was huge and leads you to the large onwards one of my big dreams was to shift to a villa. At last, water pool at the end. There was also some water gushing through we found a wonderful spacious villa. The exciting part is that the slide to make our sliding smooth, in case we get stuck in the we are living together with our aunt and cousins. So I can slide. At the first three slides, I was fine. But then at the 4th slide, play together with them. I was pushed before I could enter it. The slide was scary enough, but when I fell into the pool at the end of the slide, I thought I'm Let me introduce my new Villa. It is very spacious with a finished for life. Since I did not know how to swim, I felt very large courtyard, and a garden, a small fish tank with scared and couldn't breathe. I saw my life flashing before my colourful fish, a small room with a swing. For Brownie (my eyes. pet dog) we built a small kennel. Unusual Pets Somewhere off the coast of Andaman and Nicobar Islands…“Hey, come up here and look at this.” The scientist squealed; his excitement obvious. I headed in his direction. You see, I’m the nephew of that scientist. And he believes that sharks live near the coast of the Andaman Islands. Crazy, right? A month ago, my mom and I didn’t know about my scientist-uncle. But, when he sent me an invitation to come to the islands, I agreed. Back to the present, I glanced at the object he was showing. It looked like a canine of some pretty huge animal. He mentioned the teeth were of a shark. “We have to inform the people living on Nicobar Island. They’re in danger.” I said, matter-of-fact. “Wait up, let me show my second discovery”, my uncle said. “Fine.” “Head this way.” He led us further into the dense, vivid green jungles of Nicobar Island. The jungle was dense and hard to navigate. Walking here and there, we got lost. Making matters worse, we heard some roaring sounds and they didn’t seem far away. My uncle was still lost in thought, being forgetful. He squinted at the map. “Hey, wait. There’s a track.” He pointed out. “Come on, let’s follow it. I think that is the path to my second discovery. Oh, yes! The surroundings are getting much more familiar.” We continued on the way. At last, we found a town on that path. But something was strange. The town’s streets were filled with sharks?! “He has seen our secret. Get him!” the towns people shouted. And then, everything became black. Opening my eyes, I grunted and looked at the person. He was well built. “I have a black belt.” he started the conversation. In karate?” “No! I only have a black belt. Why do you need belts in karate? Stupid boy.” He smiled at me and ruffled through my hair. “Why are there sharks…?” I was interrupted. “Your uncle’s father wanted some pets. So, he changed the DNA of sharks and made them live on land. If you want to go from here, don’t tell this anyone.” “Ok,” I whispered. He let me go. I rushed to the town square. There were a lot of sharks who were wagging their tails, like dogs. “Uncle, come on. I won’t say a word. Just get me back to my home.” “Yes. So, this is my second discovery.” That’s when the big sharks attacked. You see, my uncle’s crazy scientist father also changed the DNA of the mother sharks, making them amphibians. They brought down huge coconut trees. The once brave roars of the animal now sounded like mild meows of a cat. Within a few minutes, everything was over. They went as soon as they came. Not even one person was injured. The baby sharks went back into the sea again. This is what steeled my nerves. Now, I am a professional marine biologist (a scientist studying sharks). Never once did the sharks attack. Dhruv Satish Kumar (Grade VII) Our Dog (Oreo) Today I will tell you about our dog Oreo. In January we went to the shelter to help the animals. Realms-Dragon land Once upon a time, there were friends by the names Leo, Sam, Tom, Steve, Alex. They had a pet dog called Frosty. The friends loved playing video games, watching cartoons, and inventing gadgets. They had made many devices like pet translators, automatic food making machines, and even transporters. One such transporter they made was a realm transporter often called a Trealm. One day Steve and Frosty were playing fetch the stick while the remaining were just relaxing in the same room. When Steve threw the stick, it landed on the Trealm. Frosty ran towards the Trealm and while picking up the stick switched it on by mistake. It made a swishing sound. All the boys and Frosty got sucked into the Trealm and landed in an unknown area filled with dragons. The unknown area looked like a place of a cartoon show. The boys and Frosty didn`t know what to do. They were thirsty and hungry as well. After searching for quite some time, they found an oasis. All were relieved. They ate and drank what was available and then continued their journey. After several hours they saw a den filled with dragons. The dragons had a great sense of smell therefore sensed the boys and Frosty. The dragons lifted their wing fifty feet high and attacked the boys. The boys used the technique of the Art of the Silent Fist which is to fight without fighting. When the boys did not fight back, the dragons calmed down a little. As time went by seeing the boy's kindness, the dragons soon became their friends. The dragons also introduced themselves as Flames, Blaze, Chard, Blist, Rocky, and Wave. They helped the boys and dogs with their journey and even protected them from danger. Soon the boys, dog, and dragons reached the Trealm. It was time to leave and the boys took a selfie with their dragon friends as a memory. Finally, Leo, Sam, Tom, Steve, Alex, and Frosty reached their home safely and went to sleep dreaming and smiling at the wonderful time they had at Dragon land with their dragon friends. Anubhav (Grade V) My First Solo Visit to a Supermarket Children like to go out, but never like to come back home. This was an incident where I bravely went out alone. Last week, I opened my fridge and realized that there was nothing in the fridge except some fruits. My mother asked me whether I could go alone to the nearby supermarket and buy some food items like milk, Laban, curd, etc. I also added some chips packets to the list as I had wanted a quick snack. At first, I was nervous, but then I agreed. Then I set out to the supermarket, with some money. On the way, I saw many people talking to each other. I saw many of my friends playing. I wanted to play with them but I remembered my agenda and kept going. I was very anxious because it was my first solo visit to the supermarket. As usual, I saw many people buying groceries, dairy products, and many other things. I also started picking items to the cart, which my mother told me. I also ensured that the food items were not expired. While I was busy buying, an uncle asked me ‘Where are your parents?’. Then I replied ‘They are at home’. He was so concerned about a little boy who was roaming alone. He questioned me again by saying ‘What are your parents doing at home?’’ I answered “They are doing their work’’. After having heard this, the uncle was pleased and left. I bought the things as per the list. When I was coming back, everyone stared at me. Maybe because I was carrying a heavy bag and walking alone. But I didn’t bother about them and walked straight towards my home. As soon as I reached home, I told my experience to my parents. My parents gave me a sweet smile as they were convinced that I was brave enough to go anywhere alone. I would like to call it “My first super voyage to the supermarket.” Krishnan Manikandan (Grade V Aries) 91

My family comprises of dad, mom, sister, and me. We reached the picnic place at 08:00am. We started the day with breakfast. My sister and I started playing hide and seek, skipping and so many other games. Later we went to our parents and started a conversation. Somewhere nearby we heard a crying noise behind the tree. I wanted to check who was there. I had to get permission from my parents to go and check around the tree. My parents agreed As I started walking towards the tree, I saw a cute little girl crying behind the tree. I asked her, “Why are you crying?” She replied, “I don’t have any friends to play with”. Then I told her in a lovely voice “There is no need to cry for a small thing. I came here for a full day picnic. We would be happy if you could join us in our picnic.” She joined and our parents welcomed her. We had lunch together. Then we played together until evening. While leaving, my parents asked her “Where do you stay?” She said with a beautiful smile on her face that her house was around the picnic area. Then we all started walking towards her home. We met her parents. They interacted with us happily. Later, we left the small girl in her house and returned. I felt so happy with my new friend with whom I had spent my whole day!! Daybreak How The Hardest Challenge Bought The Best In Me. Time when all the darkness flees, when people enjoy the sea breeze. COVID 19 the pandemic, Bees start humming in their hives, It can be called a tragic, that’s when the daybreak arrives. Coming to bring sorrow, I wish it could go tomorrow. The start of a bright, new day, children come out and start to play. I never did wish for a day so bad, That I cannot step out on the sand, People drink their morning tea, Or go to school and meet my friends, as they relax beside the sea. And play with them for hours till the end. Daybreak is just loved by all, whether young or old. I stayed at home thinking and pouting, What is the use of me shouting? It comes with a thousand calls, as people love it more than gold. I have to stay at home there’s no choice So why don’t I spend it with pleasure and rejoice? What I Now Think Of The Story “The Hare And The Tortoise” The fable Hare and the Tortoise is a story we all have heard. It is basically about a Hare who is confident of winning in a race with the Tortoise and thus midway falls asleep. But, the Tortoise keeps going on and even wins the race, to the dismay of the Hare. The Tortoise represents a person who takes their time through life so that they don’t miss anything. The Hare represents how people who rush through life can miss the true beauty of it. The world is grappling with the nuisance of Covid-19, which has sieged it by storm affecting lives physically, socially, economically, and emotionally. This has urged scientists and researchers alike to find a vaccine and a cure for this deadly virus. One of the best stories made is the Hare and the Tortoise. But humankind, to survive, needs both. Let me explain in simpler terms. Humankind needs the agility and speed of the Hare to develop the vaccine but should not fall asleep i.e. should give it its required attention. But we also need to be like the Tortoise who is slow but precise and always accurate. We need to make a vaccine with precision and need to take one step at a time which humankind is following through clinical trials but should not be too slow too. In uncomplicated words, without further ado, let me end this by saying that a time will come soon when people will be roaming around, seats full in a cinema, highways charged with traffic, and shops once again crowded as people celebrate when the last Covid-19 (I think it should be renamed as Covid-20) patient recovers and is back to health. People will still carry the scar of Covid- 19. But we should learn a thing or two from Mother Nature. It is unpredictable. If we move too fast, we will destroy ourselves. If we move too slow, the pandemic will destroy us. To win (develop a vaccine or cure), we have no smart option except to move at a medium pace (our Indian ancestors giving a hint on how to solve this problem through the game of chess), same as our competitor (in this case Covid-19). Need To Feed What is technology? People now define technology as mobile phones, laptops, etc. yes, they are technologies, but that isn’t the actual definition of it. Technology is the practical application of science. It has solved many problems with mobile phones enabling easier communication. Though various platform, technology is also being used to solve global hunger and promote sustainable development. Let’s see how farmers of India can use cheap agricultural practices not only to increase production but reduce water and carbon footprints. The world has 7.8 billion people, which means there are 7.8 billion mouths to feed. We can only achieve that if we can provide wholesome food for all. We need to obtain food security. Food security is a state in which a nation can provide all its citizens with safe, nutritious food. To obtain food security, the countries needs to invest in agriculture. In India, Agriculture is the primary occupation but most farmers own small of land, even though India has a mostly arable landmass. This is mainly due to the lands being lost to other uses and inheritance. They can’t afford costly machinery to increase production. I aim to make some practices and technologies known, that can hopefully increase production without spending a fortune behind them. Aeroponics : Soilless farming seems like something out of a sci-fi book, but it is reality. A plant is suspended in the air and on the roots, a nutrient-rich mist is sprayed. This is called aeroponics. There are many pros to this. Such as, it helps in • reduction of the water footprint • reduction of soil damage • reduction of the chance of the plant getting a disease • reduction of pesticide usage • healthy growth in an environment filled with necessary oxygen and carbon dioxide • reduction of cost • reduction of mineral depletion • reduction of air, water, and soil pollution DSR : Normally, rice in a field is planted at a rate of 15-16 saplings per square meter. India is the second-largest rice producer, with 116 million metric tons. To increase this, Direct Seeding of Rice is used. It is claimed to plant rice saplings at 30 saplings per meter rate. It increases production and aims to reduce cost and reduce land wastage. It also increases productivity and creates space for the growth of other plants as well. Flower Power 2.0 : A company has developed sprayers, which are hormone sprayers. The hormones are used by the plant to grow better. It aims to increase productivity and reduce the cost of labour by about 1/3 and also reduce other costs by 30%. ‘Venus Fly Traps’ : There is a company that develops pest traps that are very necessary to reduce plant damage. It does increase production, but also reduces the cost for using pesticides, and hence reduces the usage of pesticides, which reduces water, soil, and air pollution and increases the quality of the produce. Conclusion: These are just some of the many cheap agricultural technologies listed here. There are many others like hydroponics. But we need more researchers to increase these technologies by tenfold. To do that, we need students to understand the importance of agricultural science which is, if these technologies are developed, there will be an increase in food production, leading to global food security. If students take these as their jobs then, we can achieve global food security. (Arnab Sengupta, Grade IX) 95

Rise From The Goblet Of Fire J.K Rowling. A name that many of you know only because of Harry Potter, and Hogwarts. J. K Rowling, who is she? Many would say she is a fabricator of stories, while some would say that she is the creator of worlds. I think she is both. Her creation of the Harry Potter series was what inspired me. Joanne Rowling was born on 31st July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England. With her father, she had a strained relationship, and her mother was slowly succumbing to multiple sclerosis, she had a very unhappy childhood. She, as did most of the children that time, succumbed to the cacophony that is rock, and was influenced by their style choices, with dark hair, and dark goth-like clothes, until university. She was a good student. One with ‘Two A’s and a B’. But this was not enough for Oxford, which rejected Rowling, who instead studied French in the University of Exeter, from which she graduated. She then worked for Amnesty International, an NGO. While her train was 4 hours late, an epiphany occurred to young Rowling, with the idea of a new world, that popped into her brain. Her mother died shortly after suffering from Multiple Sclerosis, which affected her mental state adversely. Instead of giving up, throwing her hands up, and cry, she wrote and wrote, and wrote in excruciating detail, the loss of Harry Potter’s parents. She went to Portugal to teach English. There she met Jorge Arantes. She had a kid with him. But, they divorced, because Jorge used to abuse Rowling. He even admitted it and said he wasn’t ashamed. She felt like a failure, with her mother dead, her relationship failed, and her world turned upside down. She was manically depressed and contemplated death, and how she wanted to die. Nonetheless, on an old typewriter, she wrote what would become Harry Potter. She again faced rejection but was finally accepted by Bloomsbury. Her first book came out, becoming an instant hit. Now, there are not only books but film adaptations of the same. She reached the top. I guess pain can be your muse, huh? Joanne Rowling was determined to face the worst, come out of the gutter, and rise like a phoenix. She finally won. She remarried and now has a wonderful family, with more than enough money, which she does donate to multiple causes. She inspires me to fight. She inspires me to be a phoenix and rise from my ashes. She inspires me to dream. (Arnab Sengupta, Grade IX) Joe Hopkins Once, there lived a small boy called Joe Hopkins. He always did the opposite of what everyone told him. Therefore, everyone was annoyed with his attitude! His parents wanted to teach him a lesson. On 13th July, they celebrated his 14th Birthday… On every birthday, he was given a new task to do in his daily life. This time it was to keep his surroundings clean. His father wanted him to clean a dirty fan, but knowing Joe too well, he asked him to dirty the fan instead of cleaning it and went to take a short nap. So Joe did exactly what his father told him to do. He took dust and sand from a playground next to the house and put all of it on top of the ceiling fan. When his father came back from his sleep, he was going through a rollercoaster of emotions. He was confused and shocked. He shouted at Joe and asked him why he did that. Joe replied “Now, since I am 14 years old, I am a man. And I did exactly what you asked me to do!” Thereafter his dad did not shout at him and Joe started doing things as he was ordered to. A snail was looking for shelter. He wanted to sleep in the rabbit’s burrow. But the rabbit did not allow, so the snail slept outside the burrow. At night, it started raining, the snail felt to cold. It asked the rabbit if it could sleep inside ‘may I sleep in your hut? asked the snail. “Yes, you may go and sleep in the corner,” said the rabbit. So the cold snail went and slept in the corner. When the snail woke up, he found the rabbit asleep close to the fire all cuddled up while he was at the corner shivering in cold and all wet, he was upset and shouted at the sleeping rabbit. “You fool you didn’t allow me to sleep near the fire so look where I slept. It’s so wet”, said the snail. The rabbit got so angry he pushed the snail hard “You are so unthankful, you should at least be happy that I let you come inside”, said the rabbit angrily. The snail had fallen, hit his back so hard and from that day on the snails are slow. So that is how snails became slow and it never changed. Moral: Be thankful for what you have.
