Vaishnavi Gutulla, Grade 5 Aries UNSOLVED MYSTERIES The Enigmatic Nazca Lines In Peru Our modern world brims with mysteries of our past. So many, in fact, that to date, several remained unsolved and unanswered. One such historical phenomenon is the NAZCA LINES (also - Nasca). These cryptic lines and geoglyphs are located in the extremely dry Nazca Desert in Southern Peru. A UNESCO world heritage site, here you will find crooked virgules and geometric designs that morph into very distinct shapes such as a monkey, whale, spider, hummingbird, hands, and owlman, etc. Believed to have been created between 500 BC- 500 AD by the Nazca culture, these formations are usually only visible from an elevation or a height. Iron oxide coats the reddish-brown pebbles that form the top layer of the desert. Architects dug deep furrows to discard this covering, and the lower, lighter-hued soil found to be rich in lime was exposed. Years of hardening and less than one inch of rain per year have left these ancient creations more or less untouched. The purpose of these lines is still a mystery today. Some experts believe it was to communicate with their gods in the sky; thus, the colossal proportions. Others say they were made to coincide with the cosmic skies and hence were some forms of calendar or time. - Dhruv Sathishkumar - GradeVIII Aryabhatta Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 111
ONLINE EDUCATION: PROS & CONS In the past two years, online education has become more convenient as students learn that no matter the circumstances presented to them by COVID-19, they will find a way to get their studies working with their schedules. Because so many schools and universities are now providing distance-learning programs, students will get a chance to complete their education despite the pandemic. A significant advantage offered by online learning is its flexibility. Online classes allow students to work at their own pace, especially if recorded classes are made accessible. This allows them to study without worrying about the time taken to complete assignments. This also means that students can take notes while studying, which is another benefit of online classes. They do not have to worry about being late or missing class. It also proves worthwhile for students who suffer from social anxiety, as now they can focus on their studies instead of worrying about what other people think. However, the same can become a disadvantage, as distance learning often disassociates us from our peers. Feelings of isolation and loneliness are likely to occur during distance learning. It leads to students spending excessive time online, whether studying, communicating with friends, or finding new ways of recreation and entertainment online. Another disadvantage to online classes is their lack of accessibility in places where access to the internet and online resources is limited. Many students may also be unable to use the internet at home due to a lack of computer skills or insufficient funds to support their online education. Thus, online classes have now become more popular than traditional classrooms. Due to the pandemic, it seems like online education is slowly becoming a new era of learning. This means that the internet will continue to be a salient part of the educational process in the near future. Stories THE HALLOWEEN MISCHIEF Once upon a time, there lived a young and smart girl-Luciana, Lucy for short, who had a sister and two brothers. Her siblings were jealous of her. Since she was the youngest, they thought that their parents loved her the most. At the age of 10, little Lucy loved to read books. She loved Science and math. If it was a holiday, she would long to go back to school. She was good at gymnastics. She had won many gymnastics championships and her parents were proud of her. Lucy's brothers- Adam and Jake- and her sister- Hailey- decided that they would take revenge on her for all the love and praises she gets. When the family was at the dining table for dinner, they started making fun of her and this filled Lucy with rage. Poor Lucy was shy and hated showing her anger but deep down , she was boiling with it. She did not show anyone what she felt. Her siblings were angry because their plan did not work out the way they hope it would. Lucy was tired of getting hurt by them and so, she wanted to get her revenge. She waited patiently for Halloween to come for her plan to work. On Halloween morning, she set everything. A few projectors, an old television and her father's old boxing gloves etc.. In the evening, her parents said they were going out to buy candies for the trick or treaters. That meant that the four of them would be alone at home. They told Jake who was the eldest of the lot to keep an eye on the others. That morning, Lucy had found a spooky game that her grandmother said was played on every Halloween in the family for generations. The tradition was lost, when Hailey was born. She decided to bring back the family tradition. On the other side, Hailey, Adam, and Jake were plotting their revenge. They decided to use Lucy's weakness - which was being a sour loser - as their strength. They needed to find a game that Lucy would play and somehow make Lucy lose. \"That would make her very sad\", Adam said. \"Just what we need\", Jake said. \"She will never see this coming\", Hailey said. They all agreed. When they saw Lucy, they said that they wanted to play some board games. Lucy said, \"Funny you ask, I wanted to play a board game with you guys too. I chose my favorite one, but I doubt you like it or if you had ever played it before\". Hailey said, \"We will play any game with you, after all, you are our little sister!\". Lucy felt suspicious but went on with her plan. \"But before we play the board game, can we please play something else?\" she asked. At first, the others were hesitant, but they gave in eventually. Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 116
\"What is it?“, Adam asked. \"Truth or Dare of course“, Lucy replied. The others looked shocked but agreed. Lucy said that she would get a few snacks and then they could start. She went downstairs, got some popcorn, chips, biscuits, and what not? Then she went to the living room and turned the projector on facing the TV. She went upstairs and said they could begin. Lucy started. She very obviously passed. She was trained for such dares. The next dare which was for Hailey was to go down the stairs to the living room blindfolded. This was a hard one. Lucy was blindfolded and she started walking. She said, \"Now that we had played your game, we will play ours now\". Where is Luciana? I thought she was with you.\", Jake said. During this, Lucy got ready. When there was a pause, she switched on a light behind the television. \"I don't believe you. It is not possible, said Jake. Then they noticed the light. They were frightened. They saw Lucy inside. “Help me, guys. Hailey, Adam, anyone?\" ,Lucy screamed. The door opened. They screamed even louder. Their parents switched on the lights and asked them what was going on. Adam explained his side of the story. \"Lucy, where are you?, mom asked. She came out of the TV. There was no time for her full plan to work but at least the others were frightened. \"Explain yourself, young lady”, Mom said. Lucy said everything. The next day, Hailey, Adam, and Jake were all punished and Lucy too, but not as severely as the rest. The others swore to love their sister as they loved each other and never hurt her again. - Neha Ganti – Grade VI Wordsworth Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 117
THE MAGIC NOTEPAD It was the night before Christmas... I was so enthralled to get gifts from my neighbors, family, and friends. I was so excited that I couldn't even stop thinking about what I was going to get for Christmas. It was a sleepless night for me. The next morning, I woke up with a lot of excitement and exuberance. I rushed towards the Christmas tree to check what my present was. But…I heard the voice of my mom who was insisting me to take bath first. With a heavy heart, I went to the washroom, freshened up, and trudged to the Christmas tree. What did I see! There was a box covered in a red gift wrapper. I couldn't control myself, I rushed, tore apart the wraper and what did I find? I got my favorite racing car, then I eventually opened all the gifts. Except for this one, all the other gifts were boring. I had a lot of expectations from the last one that I had to open. I opened the last one with a lot of hope....and what did I find? A Notepad! Oh no! That was the worst of all. I was extremely disappointed. I rushed to my room and started crying profusely. I went where the notepad was kept and wrote on it \"This is the worst Christmas gift, instead of this I wanted a new computer or a laptop.\" And guess what!? The next day, my parents came into my room and placed a gift with a shiny gift wrap it. I asked my parents what it was, and they replied, \"This is for you son.“ I opened it and... it was a laptop! I was so happy. At that moment I never guessed that I got the laptop because of my rant on the notepad. To be honest, I had forgotten about the notepad. One day at school, I brought my notepad. In my class, there was a child who bullied me a lot. His name was Joe. I was very frustrated and tired of him, so, just to cool my anger, I wrote in my notepad \"I hope Joe stops bullying everyone and becomes friendly!\" Again, after a few minutes, Joe came to me and apologized for what he had done to me in the past and said that he would be friendly and nice to everyone. Now, this was no joke because Joe was the rudest person in the class, and not even a miracle could make him nice and friendly. Things then started to get suspicious. I started to believe that this notepad had the special power of fulfiling anything you write. But still, I wanted to test it once more, so I wrote \"I hope I get a 20 BD while I am passing the school hallway.\" And guess what.... while I was passing through the hallway, I found 20 BD. And this time, I was sure. First, I wrote that I wanted a gaming pc, a lot of chocolates, pizza, chips, a huge mansion, a plane ticket to Paris, and 60923.8 things were more added. Luckily, I got them all. So, as I had everything I wanted, I wanted to use my power for a good cause that is to end Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 118

My brother and I were excited as the next day was Christmas, the day that everyone loves. We both were playing a board game and we heard our mother calling us for dinner. We ran to the dining area and found out that we are having some porridge and meat. We had our meal, it was pleasant. Then we went to our bedrooms to sleep. The sun rose and the birds started singing indicating that it was morning already. My brother and I woke up; we went directly to the living room. We were shocked that the Christmas tree was filled with presents. Our parents gave us our presents one by one, my brother got a toy train, his favorite video game, and a few more toys. I got a knitting set and some of my favourite snacks, but I also got a notepad, it had an interesting layout. But we can't judge a book by its cover. My parents told me that it looked pretty, and it came with a pen. They gave me the pen which was golden in color, and it looked shiny. I thought it would be 'just an ordinary notepad', I decided to write a letter to my cousins, grandparents, and relatives. I was writing about the things we could do if we were with them. My family and I decided to spend the rest of the day by going out to attend a Christmas event. The next day I woke up just to hear laughing and talking sounds. I was confused what was happening, so I hopped out of my bed and went towards the living room. When I reached the living room my jaw dropped, I saw my cousins, my grandparents, and relatives sitting on the sofa while talking to my parents and my brother. I ran to them and hugged each of them. It was Halloween, and it was still pleasant because where I live, no one DARES to appear for trick or treating. Anyway, I was on my way home, when I met Charlie Willow, the little kid who lives alone in his house right opposite mine. Charlie was a strong boy. He's been living alone since he was five, yet he's doing just fine. He's had a hard life ever since what happened 15 years ago. Let's just say that Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 119
there were more downs than ups. It was terrible. I don't know what I would've done if I were him. So, as I said earlier, Charlie had a hard life. 15 years ago, his parents took him to an amusement park right next to where I live. He, however, didn't like the park, with its fast and scary roller coaster, the clowns, the creepy tents. After all, he was a little kid. So, little Charlie was dropped at his uncle's place. His parents always acted and spoke well with everyone and had no enemies. Anyways, they went to the amusement park and never came back to pick up Charlie. No one knows what happened, where they went, or what caused them to disappear. Some say they're dead, while others say they ran off leaving their son for good. The case was taken up by the police, however, there was no explanation as to what happened. The case was closed and the file was put in the unsolved mysteries pile. It's never been talked about EVER again. But I think this is a different case because 2 years ago, there lived a family of 6. They were the Normans. They were new to the village and decided to explore it. So, of course, they visited the amusement park. This time it was the six kids - ALL OF THEM GONE! It was a huge shock to Mr. and Mrs. Norman. They moved to the other side of the country a few weeks after the incident. The park was said to be unsafe so, it was shut down and never reopened. It was on Jan 17 2021 when I had gone to India. We had been to one of our aunt’s house which, was near the backwaters in Kerala. I was accompanied by my parents, grandparents and cousins - Aditya(10yrs) and Aditi(3yrs).We all enjoyed chatting with the talking grey African parrots my aunt had, the parrots were imitating our sounds. We did try fishing too, not lucky enough catch one. My aunt suggested that there was a small raft made by her gardener in the backyard who had made it roughly to do fishing in the nearby area. We were all eager to see the raft and ran to the backyard. Aditya was eager to get into the raft, though I was scared a bit. My dad took a round on the raft to see if we could take a ride too. As my dad went near, the shore Aditya and Aditi slowly climbed into the raft balancing themselves with the gardener uncle with them. The raft moved smoothly, they took a round, they wanted to go again, feeling more confident they balanced the second Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 120
round, but while returning back, Aditi slipped and fell into the water with a loud ‘Splash’. My mother and I on the shore were shocked and, we didn’t know what to do. But to our surprise my brother, Aditya dived into the water to rescue his little sister along with the uncle. They both pulled her out of the marshy water as she bounced up. For a second, we all stood still at the sight. Slowly my mother and I helped them climb up the shore. It was an unforgettable experience with my cousins back home. The presence of mind and courage Aditya showed was highly appreciable. -Aadidev – Grade IV Maple DANGER IN THE OVERWORLD Six Ninjas named Steve the elemental master of fire, Dan the elemental master of energy, Justin the elemental master of lightning, Ralph the elemental master of ice, Leo the elemental master of earth, Troy the elemental master of water were going to a beach in Bracken with Master Jack on a holiday after their morning patrol. When they reached they saw a ghost riding a bike with spiky wheels and having a chain saw. The ninja saw this and went to battle the ghost. The ghost was immune to water so if he lead the ghost to the water it won’t die. The ghost was also wearing a piece of armor called ‘The cursed chest plate’ which can create other ghosts but once it creates about five ghosts it drains its energy. The Ninja’s couldn’t defeat the ghost so they went to Greece using the Trealm. The Trealm takes people to different places including other realms. It was invented by Alex Brown in 1991. Using the trealm they reached the seas of Greece. There they found Poseidon- the Greek god of the sea. They asked him how to defeat those ghosts they saw on the beach. Poseidon replied that they need the “Aero weapons” which is found in the underworld. The ninjas said “ok we`ll get the aero weapons”. They used the Trealm to reach the underworld. They found the aero weapons and saw that the dragon of darkness was guarding the weapons. The only ninja who could defeat it was Dan with his golden dragon. With the shine of the golden dragon, they defeated the dark dragon. They took the aero weapons and brought it back. They used the aero weapons to defeat the ghosts. The ghosts were defeated and were called up by the Mayor of Bracken and were awarded for their bravery. -Anubhav – Grade VI Wordsworth Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 121
FIELD OF FIRE The farm was a delightful one. Chickens clucking, ducks squawking in the water, horses neighing away, bulls roaring and many other animals making different kinds of sounds. You would think all the sounds were catastrophic to hear all together, when in reality all of those sounds together were a symphony. Oliver, he was a bright lad. He was tall and had brown hair and brown eyes. He had just put on his old, wrinkled jumpsuit. The sheep were going to get washed for the first time! It was their first year living in a farm or as Wyatt, the second oldest child called it ‘paradise’. Wyatt, being an animal lover knew (almost) everything about animals. When he came out of the door, he saw Oliver and asked him “Do you know why we have to wash the sheep’s wool every year?” Just before Wyatt opened his mouth, Bailey, the third child, came laughing out of the door. Both the boys asked her why she was laughing. “Look for yourself”, the youngest child, Shelly walked out of the door, frowning and pouting. The sleeves of her jumpsuit were dangling down her arms and the legs of the jumpsuit were being dragged behind her. All three of them started laughing hysterically. Shelly hated being the baby of the family. She ran to her room and came back with a roper sized jumpsuit. “Now that’s a bit better,” said Wyatt trying to comfort her even though he laughed just as much as the others. “You better come now, if you want to see the sheep getting cleaned”, their father yelled. All of them ran to the shed where the sheep were going to get washed. The herd of sheep were running, trying to get away from the water. The first sheep hesitantly got down the ramp and…SPLASH. “Wow! That was a very loud splash. That sheep must have a lot of wool!” exclaimed Bailey. The sheep was struggling to get out of the water for its wool was all wet and heavy. Oliver asked his dad, “Dad can’t we help it out of the water?”. To which his dad replied, “No Oliver. That’s how the soap gets in the fleece and washes it”. Oliver nodded and continued watching the sheep getting cleaned. After the cleaning, the sheep went outside to get dried. All the children went inside talking about what they just saw. Their mom interrupted them, telling them to go and take a shower. After the shower their mom called them for dinner. They could already smell the delicious food. Oliver, Wyatt and Bailey went downstairs waiting to get their mouth filled. Shelly was still in her room deciding which toy to bring to the dinner table. “How about……Piggy. No, I brought him yesterday. How about Casey the chicken? No. Lambie! Come on Lambie let’s go!”. She skipped down the stairs holding Lambie in her arms. The other children had just sat down. She sat, fascinated by all the food. “Dig in children”, their mother said to them. After a hearty meal they all brushed their teeth and went to sleep. Next morning, Oliver, being the most productive out of the four, woke up the first. After he got ready for the day, he went down to the kitchen to make himself a cup of hot tea. When he entered the Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 122
kitchen, he saw his mother making handmade butter. His mother’s smooth, creamy butter was to die for. Her butter was one of the many sources of income for the family. He got out a kettle and started boiling some water. He then placed a tea bag in the cup and poured the hot boiling water over it. “What a beautiful way to start the morning”, Oliver said to himself. While he was talking to his mother, the rest of the children woke up and got ready for the day. They all came huddling in wait for their tea. After tea, all four of them went out to feed the animals. All the animals were fed, except the chicken. While they were fighting on who gets to feed the chicken (which always happens when the last animals are left), they saw their dad come out of the house and into the car. They rushed to their father asking where he was going. He replied “I am going to the farmers market to get some bees to breed. Your mom said she wanted homemade honey.” The children said goodbye and went back to fighting. After 15 minutes, they saw their friend Mark. He was coming for a visit! Wyatt welcomed him into the house and served him a cup of tea. After Mark drank the tea he went outside, along with the other children, they took him to the back of the house. It was the time of the year for all weeds in the field to be burned. Every year they had learned that they had to burn the whole field to remove the weeds. The children explained this to Mark. “But we are not allowed to do it alone since we have never done it and we need dad with us”, Bailey explained. Right after she closed her mouth, their mother called for all of them. Mark was left alone. He had a smirk on his face. He saw the matchbox on a broken chair. He went and grabbed it. He lighted the matchstick and threw it into the field. The fire spread around the field. “Umm is it spreading a bit too fast?” When the children came back, quarter of the field was covered in fire. “MARK WHAT DID YOU DO!”, Wyatt exclaimed in horror. Mark replied, “I am sorry, I didn’t mean to do it”. “Bailey, Shelly go and grab some wet sacks, Wyatt, Mark and I will go and grab some water. QUICK”, Oliver said in a hurry. Bailey, Shelly and even their mom got some wet sacks and started beating the grass. The boys poured the water over the fire. With the wet sacks and the water, the fire calmed down a bit. Shelly got an idea and rushed into the house. She came back with a fire extinguisher. She sprayed the field where the fire was still active. Shelly thought everyone was going to praise her but, Bailey started screaming, “WHY DID YOU DO THAT FOR? NOW ALL THE CROPS ARE RUINED”. Shelly realised what she just did and frowned. Right then, their dad came to the back the house. The children explained what had happened filling their dad on every single detail. Their dad saw how sad and ashamed she looked. Their dad hugged her and tried to comfort her. Then he suddenly started to laugh. The children were confused. Their dad explained “I was actually planning to re-plant all our crops in the back of the field. So, Shelly just did a huge favour for me”. The whole family had a good laugh. Shelly was happy and told her father, “Dad you should have seen the field when the fire was still alive, it was like a field of fire!” Raima Shefi– Grade VII Mars FUN FILLED TRAVEL DURING COVID 19 There is nothing in the world so charmingly contagious as laughter and good humour. Parents always give us the information as my younger brother Rishaan and I always want to become an astronaut. He was more keen to listen to the lectures from parents and often give suggestions to the parents how to kill corona, like buy a very sharp blade and cut its spikes when it is sleeping so that it cannot move etc. After a few weeks, Rishaan became the lecturer and we the family as the listeners. It was funny to hear the words such as quarantine, social distancing, sanitizers etc. from his mouth. Anyways due to an emergency we were forced to go to India last year. My father brought all kinds of PPE etc. before we travel. Rishaan was very excited to wear the kit as he said that it would be a practice to become an astronaut. We left from home to airport. Rishaan was fully packed with sanitizer bottles, hand gloves, mask and reached the airport. We all wore the PPE kits and were waiting for boarding. After a few minutes later, he said loudly that “Mamma I don’t like astronaut” My mother asked why. He said that it is difficult and boring to sit in this dress. We somehow managed to keep him inside his “Astronaut’s dress” in the flight and safely landed at Kannur airport. My parents then removed his COVID accessories and left minimum PPE’s on him. While moving towards the taxi, I found a shop that shows a small board saying, “Corona special cakes available”. I insisted my father to buy some and he brought one cake but with some strong conditions like do that and this before touching it. After a few minutes, the waiter served the beautiful cake that resembles the corona shape with chocolate- a round shape with spikes on it. My mother started taking pictures of the cake to post it on Instagram. But all of a sudden my little brother, corona expert poured the sanitizer on the cake and jumped around saying yes I killed the corona. We were all shocked and stunned for a while. My parents and I were in such a condition that we didn’t know what to do! After he screamed I killed corona he immediately removed his mask and threw it away. My father removed the sanitizer from his pocket and said that your mission is over. After this incident my father made sure that my brother does not keep the sanitizer with him. You just imagine about me with a broken heart I was looking all around the cake if there was any piece that I could eat. -IshaniPunnen - Grade VI Tagore Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 124
TROUBLE AT 3AM I am pacing in this dark room, thinking to myself; should I leave this place and get what I am craving for? My heart is pounding in my ears. If I failed in this mission, the owners of this place will hear the ruckus I’m causing and might use ‘ The Forbidden Weapon’ upon me. Though I was scared, I know I have to do this. I quickly checked the time; it was 3 am, way into the night. As I set the phone down, another encouraging thought came into my head, ‘It was now or never. I felt my way through the room and finally found the handle, but as I was grabbing it, I froze. I just heard a small grunt, I turned to the owner of that noise. The little monster guarding me stirred but did not wake up. I tip-toed out of the room as quietly as I could. Only one thought was in mind: I mustn’t wake up the owners. I could hear the distant sound of a gun firing. As I slowly made my way towards the main room, I saw it. The room where everything was held, my mission, and my cravings. I had not even put my toe into the room when I heard it: a trigger being pulled. I stood rooted to my spot, but relief spread almost immediately when I understood it was, in fact, James Bond who pulled the trigger. I couldn’t risk any chances of getting caught red-handed, but I was so close. I made my mind in a fraction of a minute and entered ‘ The Room of Everything’. It was pitch black in the room, so I squinted to see the room and its objects more clearly. After a minute of bumping my head into shelves, I finally found what I was looking for. I wrenched open the door in that room and a great deal of light flooded me, and I was blinded for a minute. I was in constant darkness, and I wasn’t used to the sudden brightness. After my vision was fixed, I looked around inside and found what I was looking for. It was in a small container and was tightly closed so that no person during the night would come and get it like me. I took it out of the tiny space and brought it outside, clutching it tightly as if it was a precious gem, which it was. I looked to my left and right and spotted it, sitting there in broad daylight, was the machine where I had to put this gem. I opened it as slowly and quietly as I could and stuffed the gem into the machine. I put on the timer and started waiting patiently. Any minute now, it would give a small beep, and it would be ready. After a 5 minutes of sitting in the dark, doing absolutely nothing, I started getting bored as well as impatient. I couldn’t wait any longer. Even though there were still 10 seconds on the timer, I stopped the machine and took it out anyway. It wasn’t quite as ready, but it felt really good. I took out the gem and froze as I was petrified for the 3rd time. This time it wasn’t a close call but actual footsteps I was hearing. The gun’s firing was starting to intensify. I hid behind a chair, trembling from head to toe. The kitchen’s light went on, and she was just standing there, looking for any sign of me or my brother. Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 125
And she was carrying it; The Forbidden Weapon, also known as the slipper. She switched off the light, and I heard her footsteps retreating to her room where she was watching ‘Skyfall’ at high volume. I sprinted back to my room with the gem, and as I entered my room, I heard the floorboard creak and didn’t wait to hear anything. I could hear her, this time accompanied by someone. I stuffed the little container deep under my sheets and got into bed, throwing my slippers away. They reached the room by then, and I quickly pretended to be asleep. The door was pushed open, and I could hear their soft murmuring, ‘I swear, I heard the floorboard creak!’ And then the door was snapped shut, and my parents left the landing. I stood upright and looked to my left; my brother was still in deep sleep and seemed undisturbed. I took out the little container and opened it; inside there was the wafting smell of the last slice of pizza. Well, at least I got away with it, and now I can eat it in peace without my brother constantly asking me to share it. THE TEST OF THE BHAKHUR RAJA Long, long, long ago, as far as the elders would know, there was once a fascinating kingdom on the banks of Sindh called the Bhakhurwa. It was the mightiest of all the kingdoms around region and would not give any easy allegiance. But it was a beautiful nation with rivers, horses, artists and with a handsome king. He was never short of any penny, always used to help the needy. He had two brave sons and one lovely dog. Oh, that poor king !!!, always had to face the quarreling princes. He wanted the right prince to rule his kingdom but he couldn’t make the right decision. They were both wise and powerful. So, the king decided to test the true abilities of his sons by sending them on a mission. He gave them a task of capturing forts of the neighboring country and the one who captured the most would become the heir to the throne. So, off they went to complete their task and for a month they kept the conquering the forts and after they ran out of supplies, they headed back to the capital. The brothers presented the number of forts which they captured and the second brother got few more than his first brother. He quickly proclaimed himself to be the heir to the throne but the king told him to wait. He then asked both of them how they had captured and maintain the forts. The second brother pridefully declared that he annihilated all the enemies of the forts without any mercy and made their servants their slaves. While the first brother stated that after he defeated them, he kindly help the injured and return all the dead bodies to their respective families. He also assured all the local kings their autonomy and some control on some forts. The second brother got astonished when he heard about this and declared his claim to the throne. But the king finally made his long-desired decision. He declared the first brother to be the king of this kingdom, the latter got shocked. He demanded the reason behind this ‘unreasonable’ decision. In response , the king replied that the task was not only to capture the greatest number of forts but also to take care of the war prisoners and take care of the local people of the area. The qualities which the first brother displayed were the qualities of a kind and a great king. On hearing these, the second brother realized the true meaning of the test and finally acknowledged his right to the throne. And just as common in all folktales and fantasies, the new king ruled the kingdom happily with his brother. -Anhik Nitin Gaikwad –Grade IX Pacific The Hiking It was a sunny Saturday morning. It was my first time experience of hiking and we were on the road to Drakensberg mountains. My dad, Lanny, was driving us and I was lying on back seat listening to music. Oh yes and my little brother Ross was in the passenger seat speaking to my dad asking him about hiking. When we arrived at 11:00 a.m. we were looking for the hotels close to our hiking trails starting point. We unpacked and got ready to get some sleep for big day which liesahead of us. Waking up at the crack of dawn was hard but we were able to do it. At 6:00 a.m. we were ready to hike. As we started, it seemed easy but continued to get harder. My younger brother Ross was struggling up the mountain and asked me to carry his bag for him. I had a strange thought; I should be nice to him because if something happened to him, I wouldn’t like it. We had been hiking for just over an hour when we decided to stop for a break . My brother went behind the bushes to explore the surroundings. I heard a rustle in the bushes around us and a cold shiver ran through me. HELP! We ran to the bushes. Looking around, we saw marks and footprints on the ground. We followed them down the bank. Running as fast as we could, we saw the huge creature. It turned around, we dived behind a shrub, I don’t think they saw us. Jumping up again, we were out of breath but we continued chasing. The creature was very big with brown fur, bigger than a gorilla or a bear. We were determined to find him and as we approached the village we peeped over the fences made of sticks and vines, we were sure Ross was at big danger. When we looked over the walls, we saw many sasquatches and searched for little Ross among the crowd of beasts. We had made up our minds, we were going in. After we tried to get his attention several times, we noticed he was in such a great shock that he didn’t recognize us hiding behind each tavern and bush. There was the sound of something landing behind us. We turned around and saw its giant feet. But we were no match for them, they surrounded us. My dad said, “Just be calm we’ll be fine”. They tied us up and put us each in separate taverns. I saw my backpack and tried to get army knife out, but the primitive sasquatch saw me and couldn’t understand what I was doing so he locked me up in small dark room. They took off my ropes and confiscated my bag. They left me in the room with the belongings that were there in my pocket and clothes. I wrote this message on my cell phone and sent it to everyone I know. Please try to save us!! day, as we were playing, we saw a clown holding balloons, he was walking away with his balloons, probably going home. I started following the clown, Ritushri followed me too. After 40 minutes, we stopped following because we got tired and when we turned back we were in a shock, we couldn’t see our mother. I had no clue where we were. I couldn’t even see the road. When I was sitting on a bench thinking miserably, “Why did I follow that balloon seller?”. I then thought, “Why are we standing here? Instead of waiting here we will find our way home”. Ritushri said, “Wow you came up with this idea after 4 hours!!”. I said “ Its only one hour and thirty minutes is that four hours for you”. We started walking back. On our way I saw a playground, I wanted to play there but for our own good we controlled ourselves. We walked and walked but we didn’t see anyone there, just lights and shops which were closed. We both started running when a dog saw us. It thought we were thieves and started chasing us. We both knew about a disease called rabies which can spread with a bite of a stray dog. We ran for hours and we thought we didn't take our phone. When I touched my pocket, my phone was there. Ritushri said “ Why didn't you take the phone in the first place”. I started laughing and called my mother. And suddenly a message popped up saying no range. Which meant I don’t have range with my mother. Then I saw two black figures in front of me. I didn't see what they were because there were no lights. My phone had a torch so when I put that on… It was my mother and grandmother. They shouted at us for following the clown. We said sorry and stood silently when my mother brought the clown. I asked that is it the clown we followed earlier, my mother said yes, not only that it is your brother. My mother moved the clowns mask and it was true, it was my brother. My mother said she wanted to teach me a lesson to never follow someone other than someone you know. Of course, we all know that Santa Claus is not real but Tiara believed otherwise. She never got any response or reply towards her letter nor did she get the gifts she asked for. On the day of Christmas, everyone seemed happy. Tiara and her parents decorated the Christmas tree that was 6ft tall with colorful ornaments like candy canes, ornamental ball and the main thing the glowing bright “Yellow Star”. to snow suddenly, it was a huge surprise for her. Later that day as she was sipping her hot chocolate, she asked her mother if the gift she wanted she will get, her mother looked at her affectionately but did not reply. After some time her mother said, “Tiara, do you help old people?” Tiara nodded her head vigorously showing the sign yes. Then her mother replied you already received one gift of Christmas that is the blessing of the elderly, Tiara was confused by her mother’s response. Tiara replied that “Mother, I want a real present how is a blessing one of my present”. Mother did not reply. Tiara’s long awaited time had finally come the Christmas night, her parents gave her a gift; her father gave her a new bicycle whereas her mother gave her a self knitted blanket of her favorite color turquoise. Tia {her nickname} was very happy as she really needed a bicycle for going to her school and Tia was very happy she got her own new woolen blanket. Later that day, she went to sleep and got up the next morning she saw a notepad on her study table. She went to see it and then noticed that it was having a very beautiful and unique design she has never seen. She decided she will use that notepad as what she would want to happen in that day and in the next page what actually happened. She was really happy and satisfied with that idea. The next day itself she woke up 30 minutes earlier to write what she would want to happen that day. She wrote, “I would want it snowing for an hour so she could for skiing with my friends. Then she added she would want it to rain so that she and her friends could sail little boats in the ponds and lakes.” Tia knew what she had written was particularly impossible but still she wished if that happened. After she had finished writing she looked outside the window and noticed it was snowing she did find it amusing at first but then thought it is December, it has to snow few days after Christmas. She told her mom about the plan of going with her friends to skiing. Her mother was happy with her daughter’s idea and agreed and started grabbing all the necessary items for the skiing plan. Later when Tiara came back home it started raining. Tia was so shocked and surprised at the same time whatever till now was experiencing was all written in the notepad. Tia started getting a little frightened as she thought some magic was going on. Then later that night there was a rainbow in the black night starry sky. This left Tiara puzzled how this could be possible, she muttered. Then slowly she understood that whatever she writes in the notepad comes true. Tiara was so happy when she came to know about that. But she was scared if the book’s secret came out and if it fell in the wrong hands. So she decided to keep it a little secret and never tell anyone. MY DREAM VACATION TO AMERICA Three days before my dream Vacation! I was very excited. Hi, I am Joanna Ann Abey. I am 11 years old, and this story is about my dream Vacation. So, it was Saturday the 27th of June. I woke up, made my bed opened the curtains. This was followed by me freshening up and going to eat breakfast. Then, I heard my parents talking about some Vacation. I peeked through the kitchen door to see what it was for breakfast, and I sort of startled them in the process. The door flung open, and I asked my mom what it was for breakfast. My mom chuckled and told me that she had made waffles. \"With Nutella?\" I followed up. She said, “Yeah! Just the way you like it.” \"So, dad what vacation were you talking about?\", I asked my dad. He said that we were going to America to give our aunt a visit for a month. I got very excited and was asking them questions. “What are you all speaking about early in the morning?”, my brother asked, still half asleep. I told him excitedly, \"We are going to America for 1 whole month!” He looked as excited as me when I told him. I suddenly turned to my dad and asked him, “But when are we leaving, dad- 1st of July?” “The flight departs at 10 am“, he answered. I gasped, \"We have only three days to pack?!\" \"Yeah, three days,\" my mom answered. I said, \"Well, we better get packing then.” I ran to my room and got my traveling bag out. I felt that I needed to pack a few things for when I was on the 15-hour-long flight. I ran downstairs when I heard my mom yell that food was ready. I was starving, so I got ready for breakfast, and I finished it within minutes since I was hungry. I thanked my mother for the food and went to my room to listen to music. And then I heard the doorbell ring, and I went to answer it. I found a few of my friends at the door, who asked me whether I could go play with them. I asked my parents for permission, to which they said yes. I hurriedly put on my socks and grabbed my water bottle. After playing for about three hours, we returned home. The day then went on as usual with us having lunch, dinner after some time, and then watching a movie together. 2 days later, early in the morning, I woke up, got all my things ready for the trip, and had breakfast. It was 8:40 am I told my mother that I wanted to say goodbye to my friends before we left. I then met my friends and we all played together until the taxi arrived. I took a few pictures on my tab and then we all left. We finally reached the airport after 30 minutes of a dreaded cab drive. We then checked in our baggage and went to get some food from Burger King. After that, we bought a few items, and it was finally time to board the plane. Traveling in first class was an extraordinary experience. The full moon glistened in the night sky, and it looked like it was on the wing of the airplane. We reached America and took a cab to my aunt’s house which was in New York. We then visited several restaurants that served delicious varieties of American cuisine and an American shop. Later, we went to my other aunt's house and visited a lot of places. I felt like the vacation ended quickly, which made me sad when I returned. I wish this happens in real life too! Joanna Ann Abey – Grade V Taurus Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 131
LYRE One day my science teacher gave me the assignment to make a document on my research about all the 9 planets including Pluto. I was always excited to learn more about space. Since it was due tomorrow, I went straight to my study table to do the project. As I was looking for pictures for my project, I saw a good picture but there was a small circle on the edge of the picture, but all the 7 planets and Pluto was there in the picture. It was barely seen. I saved the picture and I quickly finished my project. I went to the same picture to investigate. After 1 week I found that it was a planet. After school, I would come home and research more about the mysterious circle. It was hard because none of the websites that said something about space said anything about this planet. It did not have a name, so I named it Lyre. One day after researching I got tired and went to sleep and I had a strange dream. I was traveling from one planet to another but as I was about to explore Lyre, I woke up and it was time to go to school. I was sad because I did not get to explore Lyre. I did not tell anyone about this. Finally, after I was 100% sure about the things I researched about the planet, I found a way to contact NASA. They were intrigued by my discovery. They said that they will send someone soon to explore more about Lyre but just then I asked if I could go. They were shocked because I was only 10 years old. Then after 3 days they called and said that I could go but I would be with professionals and that I should listen to them. I was bursting with excitement. When I shared the big news to my parents, they were so proud of me. I was so happy. After a few weeks, I was getting ready to go to space. After I got there, I was so excited to explore Lyre. I learned how to take a picture in my training before I came. My experience was very exciting. It was very cold. Surviving there was a challenge, but I did it. After I came back to Earth, I got a prize for my smartness. Nanma Ann Thomas - Grade V Taurus WHEN IT SNOWED The story begins on the day when one of my biggest dreams comes true. I was at my uncle's place in the US. That day, my uncle woke me up early in the morning to show me something I had always been waiting for. I followed him and when I peeked outside the window, I saw something I couldn't believe. It was tiny snowflakes falling from the sky. I was super excited and jumped with joy. We quickly got dressed and went outside, played with the snow and we made a snowman. I saw that the whole street was filled with snow. Some of the neighboring kids also joined me and my brother. We all played together for a long time. We also had a snowball fight. When it started to snow heavily, we came indoors and had hot chocolate. It was the best day ever! And finally, my dream had come true! Poorna Sreeram - Grade V Taurus Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 132

Editorial Board It was a wonderful opportunity to express one's thoughts in a creative way. It was an amazing experience capturing the precious moments of the splendid events of our school. Ritisha Bisht (Chief Editor) Being a part of the editorial board has made me aware of the responsibilities I could take on and fulfill with utmost dedication. It has helped me to greatly inculcate values of punctuality, discipline, team work and a lot of creativity, in myself. Appreciating the works of others and getting to read such wonderful poems and stories was an experience no less than magical. The experience was undeniably energizing and helped me discover my profound creative and philosophical part of the mind. Amrutavarshinee Murugan (Student Editor) My experience in being part of the editorial board was truly wonderful and I am so grateful for having been given this role. It has been a pleasure to learn from fellow members and see and learn from what the pupils of BIS have written be it poems, stories, etc. I have enjoyed collaborating with fellow members of the editorial group and I hope to come back to this position next year. Thank you for this wondrous opportunity. Sarah Ann Roy (Student Editor) The journey as an Editorial Member is like riding a roller coaster. There were many ups and downs in this journey. Editing several types of writings ranging from newsletters, write-ups to short stories was a wonderful experience for me. In the Editorial Board, we dive deeper into the secrets of the English language along with the teachers and I enjoyed it. As said earlier, it was a journey just like a roller coaster, but teamwork is what it made a joyful ride. This is an experience would remain a treasure in my mind forever. Sriya Anish (Student Editor) “The true Alchemist does not change lead into gold; They change the world into words” - William H. Gass Being part of this editorial board has been an incredible journey that I will never forget. Writing has been my hobby and passion for a long time and being a member has really helped. I particularly enjoyed the bits where we had to write about school events because writing about an experience is magical. Rua Razik, (Student Editor) As a member of the Editorial Board I was delighted to have a glimpse of my schoolmate's worlds. The journey of the school year has provided me with memories that will be treasured forever.
