Let noble thoughts come to us from every side Annual Magazine – Vol. VII BAHRAIN INDIAN SCHOOL APPROVED BY THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN AFFILIATED TO CBSE, NEW DELHI

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela. Since the school’s inception in 2014, Bahrain Indian School has strived to provide quality education and develop the young minds of future generations. The school’s mission to make the students mentally developed, physically strong, socially adjusted, emotionally balanced, and technically talented is fulfilled every day by its efficient, hardworking faculty. It is said that teachers are the true mentors and motivators of one's life. This rings true in Bahrain Indian School, where teachers not only educate but inspire students every day. We are thankful to the kind and true mentorship of our teachers that the students of our school will make the mark in their life. Our school ensures that every student can grow to their full potential, and inspires us to aim for greatness. The balance between co-curricular and academic activities makes sure that each student is given an opportunity to learn and a platform to shine. The cooperative and interactive study environment prepares students to become global citizens in today’s competitive world and provide leadership for the future. Mahatma Gandhi once said, \"Literacy in itself is no education. Literacy is not the end of education or even the beginning. By education, I mean an all-around drawing out of the best in the child and man-body, mind and spirit.\" This message is reflected in our school’s motto, to let noble thoughts come to us from every side. The school’s holistic and practical approach to education set it apart from the rest, and make everyone proud to be a part of the Bahrain Indian School family. An Epistle by the President Message The richness of Indian Culture has universal acceptance. The multifaceted system of education that existed in India has undergone changes. Contemporary development spins over several centuries without transforming the core of Indian philosophy. And, at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan we reach out to the student community to excel in both academic and co-curricular activities giving impetus to human values raising them to be responsible citizen of the countries they live. This is unique to Bhavans’. The Bhavans’ institution both in India and abroad are committed to imparting quality education. The Bhavans School in Bahrain, Kuwait and UAE have been playing an important role in the Middle East by providing quality education. We wish all the students a bright career ahead. We take this opportunity to greet our teachers and the parents of our students. 6th January, 2022 (SURENDRALAL G. We wish our students at the Bhavans’ Schools in Bahrain, Kuwait and UAE a bright future. 3rd January, 2022 H.N.Dastur (Executive Secretary & Director General) Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kulapati Munshi Mar, Mumbai-400 007, Email: [email protected], Web: http://www.bhavans.info, Fax: 022-23630058 Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 04

An Epistle by the Chairman 50, 40, 30, or even 20 years back – children were focused on age appropriate matters – be it their education and cultural activities in school, responsibilities at home or the social community they lived in. Character building was the essence in school and at home. Individual satisfaction and personal needs were not given importance or priorities. The change from then to now is visible at every home. The attitude of parents and children at every home – then and now is far different from the way it was back then. Change is necessary and even mandated as generations pass. But we as a school, believe that culture and values should remain the same and be the solid foundation of every home for generations. During the last 15 years of my 24/7 involvement with children, parents and teachers, I am really surprised or in fact more saddened to see the current level of attitude of children from class 3 onwards. May be I belong to an older generation or still continue with the old school of thoughts. But I believe many of the children are diverting from their proper path, and chasing things that are not age appropriate, and not at all necessary in these years of their career. This will ultimately lead to more children being trapped in a whirlwind of activities and emotions that divert their attentions and focus from matters most essential to set their future on track. Many of the children are in the trap. I am very sure that as a parent you belong to one of these parent groups – either the ‘trapped’, or the possibly ‘going to be trapped’. During several interactions with parents it has come to my notice that there are a number of instances where children lack respect, cases where they retort and answer back, and yell at, when even the slightest or basic questions are asked at home, but the very same child was obedient and mostly well behaved at school. Yesterday I heard from my senior leadership team that grade 8 children have started answering back to Principal and Vice Principals. In the last couple of months, I have seen lots of such unhealthy incidents which warrant the parents’ immediate intervention. I am sure many parents are experiencing the same, or similar situations at home, as well. Our children grow physically and they may be aware of many more things than necessary for their age because of increased social media presence – but their emotional responsibility level is still that of a child and not of an adult. They need to understand the impact of their words and actions, and take responsibility for the effects of the same. At Bhavans’ we believe in character building which is the foundation of any child for a better tomorrow, better future. Education will follow automatically. Parents are requested to communicate with the senior management team of the school as and when necessary to discuss the progress of their children in all matters of their growth or when you feel there is a visible change in child’s attitude and behavior. Let us work together for a better tomorrow. Trust us, we are with you. N K Ramachandran Middle East Chairman Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 05

An Epistle by the Vice Chairman Dear Students / Teachers / Parents, It gives me immense pleasure to contribute to this issue of our Annual School Magazine. Each year, the school magazine outlines the progress that the school has made during the previous academic year and recapitulates all events, showcasing the various activities of the school. This year has passed swiftly in a blur of achievements and accomplishments, and I would like to congratulate and extend my best wishes to all those who have worked hard to ensure that the magazine remains a treasure trove of memories. To me, the magazine will always be an event-filled journal, chronicling another exciting year that will be cherished by our students in the years to come. Through this magazine, I would like to greet all the stake holders of our school family. As a school, something that we have always believed in is, Home is the first school and school is the second home. This has come so true today with COVID19. As we continue to wrestle with the implications of the situation, homes and how our children learn have become far more important than it may ever have been. In March, when things started to fall out of place and we were forced to get ourselves prepared for facets of our life that we had never encountered and when homes were where the action moved to – learn from home, teach from home, work from home, assessments from home – I think the one thing we at Bhavans realized was that – this is going to take some time. As is often said, it is always better to use a compass over a map to navigate a world of uncertainty. We realized we needed to block the negatives out and think like a monk on how we wanted to take the academic year forward. We knew we didn’t want to sit around and wait for things to unfold, but rather we wanted to make things happen. Unfortunately, when we are a school and when there is a little chaos around and when we have impressionable minds looking at the school to see what will happen next – it leaves very little margin for the school to be unprepared and to seem unsettled. As far as we as a school was concerned, it was our topmost priority to give the confidence that things would be as normal as they could and we would continue to do what we do. That is teach – educate – provide opportunities – allow children to have their fun and much more – all while they continued to trod the path to be a Global Citizen. A disruption shouldn’t have to stop that march. We have always told parents in our school that we are keen on guiding children into the future who will be passionate about their work and who will want to strive to make a difference in whatever they do and will stay the course in a very uncertain world. True – we did improvise – like building our partnership with parents and children and getting them to correct answer papers based on our marking schemes thereby building mutual trust and honesty, being a little flexible with our time tables and increasing the class duration which gave teachers and children that little time to adapt and adjust to the online platform, continue with the numerous activities – song / dance / music all online for children, do virtual summer camps, virtual sports days, class photo sessions with children sitting at home and of course the school annual day. We were always conscious that these uncertain times would pass and would never be permanent and when our children and teachers come back to school, they wouldn’t realise that there was one year of the so called ‘new normal’. Our team of teachers at Bhavans has ensured that we stayed the course and remained committed to our task and in the process also ensured that we paid attention to not only the small things but also the bigger things like mental, physical and emotional well being of our teachers and students and ensuring that we all remained healthy and happy. As we turn the corner and start to see the glimpse of hope that sooner rather than later, we are all going to get back to, as a school we can be rest assured that our teachers have done and are doing their best to keep our children engaged and active as we all navigate and turn the corner. We may still not have reached the end of the roller coaster ride but we can take pride in the fact that we have reached the top of a mountain even if that maybe the bottom of the next one. In this regard, BHAVANS owes much to its dynamic leadership whose untiring efforts have resulted in the overall development of the School. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all our staff members for their dedication and hard work that has ensured that our flag is always flying high. Kudos to the parents and children for travelling together with us and making sure that we ended the Academic year on a high. I pray that the Almighty God continues to bless all of us and help us get through this very difficult times. Signing off with a variation of an inspired Quote of Albert Einstein – At Bhavans, we don’t teach our children. We create conditions for them to learn. Thank You Once Again. Sooraj Ramachandran Vice Chairman Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 06

From the Director’s Desk THE BEGINNING OF CHANGE “Action is the foundational key to success.”- John Wooden Dear Readers Reforms or changes are always needed to shed outdated models and break the monotony. National Education Policy 2020 brought a major breakthrough in the field of education. It put forward education to an interesting inflection point, thereby opening new digital platforms of learning and innovative techniques of teaching. It further propelled global standards to create new benchmarks. NEP 2020 envisions well educated generation with high literacy rate. Additionally, it strives to make education holistic and a lot more rewarding. NEP is widely accepted as it has open doors for new platforms and techniques of teaching and learning. BIS fraternity has re-strategize the teaching learning processes in line with recommendations of NEP. It is believed that learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. The policy focuses on experiential learning and discovery based teaching learning methods. The school promotes activities , projects , usage of technology, classroom discussions which helps in broadening the collaborative and joyful exploratory activities for experiential and deeper student learning. The activities help in cultivating 21st century skills including critical thinking, problem solving , creativity and digital literacy. Integration of technology has been integral part of teaching learning process at BIS. Art Integrated activities as conducted in various subjects help in imbibing Indian ethos through integration of Indian Art and culture. As BIS envisions students to be global citizens hence we celebrate and conduct activities not only limited to India but equally extending to other countries globally and Multi cultural Fest was one among them. In fact it’s not an end it’s just a beginning to make skilful learners who are competent to face real time challenges. Lets innovate, imagine the future and fill in the gaps ....... Thanks for your support and cooperation. Himanshu Verma Director- BIS Bhavanubhav | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 07

From the Director’s Desk Dear Readers “We cannot become what we want by remaining what we are.” – Max Depree The pandemic and new educational policies have shifted the entire paradigm of education and have taken it to a new horizon. Bhavans Bahrain Indian School stands as a testimony of adopting and adapting technology in full swing. We accepted the changes with open arms. Traditional teaching was replaced with virtual teaching while embracing technological advancements. Undoubtedly, it is foreseen that virtual reality combined with augmented reality will be the future as the learners are observed to have higher engagement and more positive emotions than otherwise. Being in a positive mood also has reciprocal effects on learning. It increases cognitive flexibility, create positive academic climate leading to high immersion on knowledge acquisition. Have you ever thought why and how the use of augmented reality create active learners? How does virtual reality differ from augmented reality? Well, virtual reality is the imitation of the physical structure from a real world or an imaginary world in a computer generated environment whereas augmented reality is the combination of real world with the virtual world. The creation of enriched environment using virtual objects, the combination of physical reality and digital holograms, or the creation of a virtual world adds to the various aspects of augmented reality. BIS teachers have taken the hearts of the students by transporting them to the world of means of transport, wild animals, letters of alphabets, numbers, fruits & vegetables and many more. In this Google era, the didactic way of teaching and mugging up of facts is no longer in vogue. Instead of dividing education into theoretical and practical aspects it is of utmost importance to deliver holistic learning in the form of multimedia rich content to hold next generation learners ever shortening attention span. Exceptional learning and teaching experience can be offered by turning conventional classrooms into an interactive and engaging environment and our school has stepped into the new world of interactive education coupled with engaging content. To conclude digitalization of education helps in eradicating time distance gap and it reinforces learning and extends understanding with a favourable approach from the student’s end as well. Therefore we need to decide – ONE DAY OR DAY ONE!! Bhavanubhav Ritu Verma Director- BIS | Annual Magazine - Vol. VII | PN: 08

From the Desk of Principal Dear Readers Another year has gone by, leaving behind some of the glorious moments in the history of BIS. Since its inception in April 2014, Bahrain Indian School, under the aegis of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan- Middle East stood above the rest in its approach to education as well as in its pedagogies. This is obvious with the maiden CBSE Grade X result with all our students coming off with flying colours with all of them scoring much beyond the proficiency level and our topper with 99%. Along with academics co-curricular activities go hand in hand at BIS, as we are committed to preparing global citizens who can provide leadership for future. Yes, we strongly believe that the children educated for global citizenship are better learners, better change makers, and contributors towards a better world. Keeping this in mind, we have carried out all the activities; some were the part of our annual plan and some new like multicultural fest to strengthen the capacity and widen the vision of our students as global citizens. Together, we have excelled in every initiative that we undertook and we have stood together in facing challenges without compromising on the holistic education for which we are known for. We know that creativity and imagination are the two important skills; that students need to be successful in school and life. We agree with Albert Einstein, \"Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” and Edward De Bono “There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns.” Hence, Bhavanubhav! Yes, the seventh edition ‘Bhavanubhav’ 21-22 is a humble attempt to channelize the imagination and creativity of the students in the right way. I congratulate the students’ Editorial board and all the students who contributed in the making of this magazine by writing articles, stories, poems and the teachers who guided them at every step. You are going to witness the year gone by with various activities and the new initiatives as well as new imaginative expression of our students as you leaf through the pages of Bhavanubhav. So let’s buckle up to surf through the pages of ‘Bhavanubhav.’ Wish you a happy browsing! Annual Magazine - Vol. VII Saji Jacob Principal Bhavanubhav | | PN: 09

From the Counsellor’s Desk Positivity is more about one’s overall perspective on life and their tendency to focus on all that is good in life. Positive thinking, or an optimistic attitude, is the practice of focusing on the good in any given situation. Researches are done and result shows positive thinkers are psychologically and physically healthier and less stressed. Broadly speaking, positive thinking is a force which helps a person to handle their emotions, behaviour and help to overcome depression. The major characteristics associated with a positive mind-set are:- •A person is willing to make an effort and take a chance instead of assuming that the efforts won’t pay off. •Acknowledging that things don’t always turn out how one want them to, and try to learn from the mistakes. •A person is more resilient and has better ability to face crises or trauma. They try to solve problem and eventually overcome such adversity, and failure instead of giving up. •They continuously appreciate the good things in the life. •They are righteous, and straightforward, instead of deceitful and self-serving. Negative attitude is like a giant wall which holds a person from moving forward in life. Some common forms of negative self-talk include: •Filtering. You magnify the negative aspects of a situation and filter out all of the positive ones. •Personalizing. When something bad occurs, a person automatically blames himself. •Catastrophizing. This means a person anticipate the worst with small simple incidence. •Polarizing. In this situation a person see things only as either good or bad, perfect or total failure. There is no middle ground. Setbacks are part of life and in this situation we can teach the child to keep the chin up by few simple methods which provides positive reinforcement. To help child to develop positivity in life one should be an example and show how optimism creates an ideal environment for happiness. Sometimes it is said “seeing is believing” and children follow their parents. A child finds difficult to accomplish his goals. Parents can help their child to change negative attitude by cognitive behavioural therapy. The basic concept is to replace negative thought with positive one. Few examples are - write statements displaying child positive qualities in a room so that the child can read several times. Prepare a chart of few short comings which are easy for child to overcome. This will boost self-confidence in child and change. Post some motivation quotes. Even it can be placed at different places. A positive environment can do wonders for eliminating negative thinking and encouraging healthy thoughts as your child tackles new learning challenges. It's important to regularly plan goals with your child, and clearly set the stage for what success looks like. Show your child you are with him. A little motivation and support from parents during this time will help them to overcome difficulty. Negative thinking can be turned into positive thinking. The process is simple, but it does take time and practice as one has to create a new habit. To change negativity into positivity identify areas of life that you usually think negatively about. Talk to the child and evaluate his or her thoughts periodically during the day. If you find that the thoughts are mainly negative, try to find a way to put a positive spin on them. Seek humor in everyday happenings of your child. This will help him to feel less stressed. Encourage your child to do exercise everyday for about 30 minutes on most days of the week. Follow a healthy diet to fuel your mind and body. Start by following one simple rule: Don't say anything to yourself that you wouldn't say to anyone else. Be gentle and encouraging with yourself. If a negative thought enters your mind, evaluate it rationally and respond with affirmations of what is good about you. Think about things you're thankful for in your life.
