63เร่ืองที่ 1 การใชพจนานกุ รม (Dictionary) พจนานุกรมเปนหนังสือที่จะชวยใหผูเรียนทราบความหมายของคําศัพท ชวยผูเรียนในการตรวจสอบตวั สะกดของคําศัพทภาษาอังกฤษท่ีไมแนใจ และพจนานุกรมยังแสดงการอาน คําท่ีถูกตองดวยดังนั้น ผูท่ีเรียนภาษาอังกฤษทุกคนควรฝกการใชพจนานุกรมใหคลองเพื่อการศึกษาคําศัพทตาง ๆ ใหเขาใจ คําที่บรรจุอยูในพจนานุกรมจะเรียงตามลําดับตัวอักษรหากเปนพจนานุกรมอังกฤษ – ไทย จะเรียงคําจาก A – Z ถาเปนพจนานุกรมไทย – อังกฤษจะเรียงคาํ ศัพทตง้ั แต ก – ฮ ผูเ รียนตอ งทราบและจําไดวา ตัวอักษรใดมากอนหรือหลังตัวอักษรอน่ื เพ่ือท่จี ะคน หาความหมายของศัพทไดสะดวกและรวดเรว็ ข้นึการหาความหมายของคําศัพท (Finding the meaning of the words) 1. เปดหาความหมายโดยเปด เรียงตามลําดบั ตวั อกั ษร A – Z 2. ผเู รียนอาจไมพ บรปู ของคําศัพท เหมือนดังที่ปรากฏในหนังสือท่ีกําลังอานเพราะคําน้ันอาจอยูในรูปตาง ๆ เชน เติม –ing -ed -s หรืออยูในการเปรียบเทียบขั้นกวา –erหรือขั้นสงู สุด –est เปน ตน ดงั น้นั ผูเ รียนจะตอ งเปดหาจากคาํ ศพั ทหลัก จงึ จะพบความหมายของคาํ ศพั ทท ตี่ อ งการ ตวั อยาง watched มาจากคาํ วา watch funniest มาจากคําวา funny happiness มาจากคําวา happy 3. คาํ ศัพทห นง่ึ คาํ อาจทําหนา ที่ไดหลายอยาง เชน kick เปน ไดทงั้ คาํ กรยิ าและคาํ นาม และในพจนานกุ รมบางเลม จะมตี วั อยา งประโยคใหดวย ตัวอยาง kick (คิค) vt.เตะ, ถีบ, ตีกลบั , เตะฟุตบอล -vi เตะ, ถีบ, ตอ ตา น, ตีกลับ –n. การเตะ, การเตะลกู ออกนอกเสน , การไลออกจากงาน king (คิง) n. กษัตริย, พระเจาแผนดิน, พระราชา, ประมุข –vt. ทาํ ใหเปนกษตั รยิ  –adj. ท่สี ําคัญ ทเี่ ปน หลกั (-s. ruler, sovereign, monarch) –ex. The lion is the king of the jungle.

64 ผูเรียนตอ งเขา ใจโครงสรางของประโยคท่ีตองการคนหาความหมายของคําศัพทดวย จึงจะสามารถเลือกแปลไดถูกตอง พจนานุกรมบางเลมจะใหคําที่มีความหมายเหมือนใกลเ คยี งกนั หรอื ตรงขา มกันใหดวย เชน ตัวยอ S. ในที่น้ีคือ synonym แปลวา คําที่มีความหมายเหมอื นกัน 4. การใหค วามหมายของคาํ ศพั ทในพจนานกุ รม คาํ ศพั ทห น่ึงคาํ อาจจะมคี วามหมายหลายอยา ง พจนานกุ รมจะใหความหมายทั้งหมดและเรียงความหมายที่ใชคน โดยท่ัวไปกอ น และตามความหมายทใ่ี ชโ ดยเรยี งลงไปExample (ตัวอยาง) alike / อะไลค / adj, adv. เหมือนกัน, คลายกนั , อยางเดยี วกนั - alikeness n. –ex.
