KINDJEARZSZTARS LESSON PLAN MANUAL Kinderstars | Kindergarten Tiny Company

Expressions Dance | Kinderstars | Jazz Curriculum Age Group: Kindergarten Class Description: This is a ballet/jazz combo class for dancers in kindergarten. Students in this class will build a solid foundation in basic dance skills, develop self-esteem, and improve their dance technique within a challenging and positive environment. 1-hour class: 30 minutes ballet and 30 minutes jazz Attire: Class uniform, pink convertible tights, and pink ballet shoes. Hair must be in a bun. How to Effectively Use the Jazz Curriculum: This curriculum builds fundamentals for a kindergarten-aged jazz class. Instructors are expected to ensure quality in classes and material being taught and to fulfill the required skills listed in the curriculum pass off section. Each lesson is to be used for 2 weeks in a row. If you feel you need to start an older class back in an outline for a younger age group, do it. The hope would be that the older class will progress through the lessons faster because of increased development capabilities. This way you will be ensuring that there are no fundamental holes left in a dancer's training. If a class has separate jazz and ballet teachers, you should review ballet skills so you know what is taught in the ballet class. Team teachers are expected to follow outlines to ensure ballet and jazz classes are working together for proper progression (without repeating the same steps in each class). Keep them moving! Add in brain breaks/movement games when the class is beginning to get distracted! Water breaks are not allowed in a 30-minute class. Remind them to get a drink of water when switching between ballet/jazz. Class Timeline: • Take roll! That student will slide the bean bag to another student and then scoot out of the circle. Continue until no students are left. In the end, don't forget to have all of the students say your name! 5 min \"Follow Me\" Warm-up • Always start with an aerobic workup to get student's heart rate up. Make it a fun \"dance party.\" Some ideas are: step claps, jumps side to side with arms swinging overhead then down low (paint sky/wash table), or just simple jumping jacks, high knees. Talk about what listening position is, voices quiet, body frozen with arms held behind their back and eyes on the teacher. Have them wiggle around then say “listening position” and they have to freeze and look at you. • Learn the places of the room. Where to go and what to do when you say the following commands: center, line up/across the floor, go to the barre. Talk about what to do when going to each place (voices quiet, bodies frozen, eyes on the teacher, holding onto the barre correctly, standing on dots, etc). Say an area and have them walk/skip/wiggle/crawl to each place • Arm positions standing up using Simon says! Practice them all together first: \"V\" low and high and \"T,\" really focusing on straight arms, shoulders down, palms towards the floor • Spotting. Have everyone face mirror looking at their face. Make sure they are grabbing correctly (fingers towards the floor, grabbing inside of heel). Focus on having a flat back and straight leg. When they get that, have them start taking their other handoff and balancing for 5 seconds maintaining the straight back and leg. Hand placement should be on the inside of the foot in the arch, not wrapped around the foot. • This is a good place to insert a brain break activity! 5-7 min Across the Floor • Jazz walk relay! Have the class find a partner. Have them tell their partner their name and favorite color. When they've done that, have partner A stand on the left side of the room, and partner B stand on the right side of the room. Partner A will strike their favorite pose, then partner B will jazz walk (walks in a forced arch) to their partner. When they get to them, they will strike their favorite pose and partner A will jazz walk to the other side of the room • Have everyone find a new partner.
