Melanie is passionate about making a positive difference in the world and has faith in herself to do so. But it wasn’t always this way. When Melanie was 16, her Dad was diagnosed with schizophrenia and came to her for help. Terrified and confused, she tried to help him, until finally accepting after many years, that it was his journey and, infact, she could not. Not surprisingly, Mel was diagnosed with depression around the age of 16. Over the years, her body created many conditions to communicate with her that something needed to change, for example: PMDD (Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder), anxiety, hormonal imbalance, MRSA, food sensitivities, shingles, Vulvar Vestibulitis, Hydradenitis Suppurativa, tonsillitis, glandular fever, heel spurs and a DVT. As well as these physical conditions, she experienced trauma within her immediate family as a teenager, went through many relationship breakups, spent the majority of the last 16 years as a single mum of 4, endured a traumatic pregnancy termination and went through several years of domestic violence. Melanie was born with significant hearing loss which was only picked up during a random hearing test at the age of approximately 33. She often felt tired and sick, had negative self-talk, low self esteem, a victim mentality and lost her voice, feeling unworthy and undeserving to speak. Highly sensitive and intuitive, she ignored her intuition for much of her life and was affected by the energy of her environment and other people, unbeknown to her at the time. She fought antidepressants until the age of 30 when she tried them to treat a physical condition. They didn’t help the depression, and after trying several over 11 years, she was eventually able to wean off them by making changes in body, mind and spirit. Bit by bit, Mel put the pieces of her jigsaw puzzle back together and was then able to move forward in love and peace, creating a life of magic as her most authentic self and supporting other women to do the same. Fast forward to now, and at age 48 she has never felt better. She hasn’t smoked in 9 years, drinks alcohol occasionally, eats a variety of protein, good fats and fresh fruit and veges daily, avoids gluten and refined sugar, consumes limited dairy and exercises daily. Kelly Owens is the author of the book Death By Cubicle—Recovery From Burnout Without Quitting Your Job. The book releases in October 2022. Prior to focusing on the topic of burnout, Kelly worked in a variety of leadership roles in both nonprofit organizations and for-profit companies.
