Genetics, first and foremost, is concerned with how traits are inherited. The processes of cell division are at the root of how chromosomes get doled out to off- spring. When genes are passed on, some are assertive and dominant while others are shy and recessive. The study o how different traits are inherited and expressed is called Mendelian genetics. Genetics also determines your sex (as in maleness or femaleness), and your sex influences how certain traits are expressed. In this part, I explain what genetics is and what it’s used for, how cells divide, and the basics of how traits are passed from parents to offspring.
