While receiving the 9th National Literary Award from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (2003), S Othman Kelantan strongly criticized the implementation of science and mathematics teaching in English by the government at that time. On top of that, S. Othman Kelantan is one of the writers who has been appointed as the ninth National Literary Man. Although he only held the throne as a National Literary Man for only six years, as a literary activist he has made many contributions in various angles before he returned to rahmatullah. Therefore, as a writer, the effect that can be given to the thinking of society through the production of literary works, especially novels is one of the contributions given by him. The novel work produced by the author is able to give positive effects to society in their thinking. This situation can be seen through his involvement in the phenomenon of Islamic 26
literature that has qualified him to win the title of the ninth National Literary Man. The appearance or production of novels presented by him is unique and different from other writers including previous National Literary. This gives him an advantage to hold the title. For example, through the novel Ruang Perjalanan produced in 1989 left an impact on the thinking of society. The elements of advice presented by him are expressed figuratively and not openly but at the same time contained and loaded with high philosophical values especially religious elements. In addition, he was indirectly enriched and elevated Malay Literature which is also part of his contribution. His work is not only popular among the people in the country, but also able to attract the attention of the international community. The proof is, there are some of his novels that have been translated into various languages such as French, Japanese, English, Russian, Vietnamese and Chinese. This shows that the work he produced is of such quality that it successfully penetrates into other world languages. This situation indirectly raises the country's name on the international stage and is well known. His love for the field of literature caused him to be able to produce many scholarly or academic books related to literature. The quality of the novel that he brought made some people lift the novel to the silver screen or adapt it into film form. The title of the novel is Juara whose title was changed to Jogho in the form of a film. Although the novel has been adapted in the film, but the content or message to be conveyed is the same as shown by the writing side of S. Othman Kelantan. Here it can be proven that the work he produced is very good and high quality in addition to getting the attention of the community so that there are parties who want to raise it to a higher level. This is because the party is convinced that the work produced by S. Othman Kelantan contains certain values that should be displayed in public. Indeed, this method is also one of the alternatives to highlight the great works of the author. Subsequently, he has also made changes and innovations in the production of works. As a National Literary who loves the world of creative literature, makes him never feel tired to work. He always finds the space and time available to think and innovate in each of his works. This situation can be proven when he presented a difference in the production of his novel, the novel Kota Bharu in 2003. He authored this novel by making his home state of Kota Bharu as the background of the novel. In this work, he managed to describe and reveal the state of Kota Bharu to the reader well. Every corner and space in the land of Kota Bharu is described in detail by the author through recordings about the lives of the people of Kota Bharu. 37
All things considered, the role and contribution of S. Othman Kelantan helps to produce great and quality works. Each verse of his writing creates a creative work that is a motivator for other individuals to work with. His novels loaded with philosophical values are able to form a competitive society. His role and contribution should not be forgotten by society in the current of modernity. 48

Prominent Novels by S.Othman Kelantan Pertentangan (1967) This is the first novel that emphasizes heavy thoughts and ideas of S. Othman Kelantan. This is due to a lot of talk regarding the conflict that exists between the advanced religious beliefs and the thoughts of teenagers who are free to be open and influenced by western beliefs. Its content is indeed loaded with Islamic philosophical debates with western philosophy. According to S. Othman Kelantan, the novel Pertentangan is built from the author's insistence to make the reader, especially the community aware, in the form of intellectual protest. He has a high level of thinking that fits his values as a Muslim with a soul that is in the group of the Muslim community and is protected by an Islamic state. 7 11
Angin Timur Laut (1969) 'Angin Timur Laut' or Northeast winds mean monsoon season. The monsoon season is a northeast monsoon monsoon. But this season is not only a seasonal fear of fishermen because the turbulent life of fisherman involvement is overshadowed by other, more complex problems. Not a few studies on fishermen are done in a geographical, anthropological, sociological and economic approach. Readers have read a series of studies that present the factors detrimental to the plight of fishermen. Problems of infrastructure, trading system, capital system, trust, and sociopolitical development are factors that are often raised by researchers about the poverty of fishermen. Several studies have been conducted by Western and local scholars on the socio-economic problems of fishermen. Yet when reading the novel Northeast Wind, the reader will psychologically understand how fishermen are not only tied to the system mentioned above but trapped within the framework of problems that surround themselves, society and their cosmological. Northeast winds are a psychiatric conflict of fishermen facing the monsoon season that is more devastating than the capitalists who ensnare them but their persistent attitude in fulfilling personal and family responsibilities; how is their great effort to survive, against monsoon, natural or seasonal phenomena that come every year in their lives? Persistence against the threat is seasonal but persists all the time as a circle that has no way out but continues to struggle to face it. Poverty and famine, and deep in the middle of the sea are death threats. 8 12
Ethnographically and sociologically, the Northeast Winds witnessed the daily life of fishermen. The place where they gather at the time before going down to the sea, after being tired of returning from the sea, stopping at a coffee shop or stall is a common routine in their daily lives. The coffee shop is a place to talk, chat, and no less a place to get kitchen supplies or supplies to the sea. However, in the Northeast Wind, the display of coffee shops is used by S. Othman Kelantan to express the debate of fishermen to decide to go down to the sea at monsoon time. At the same time, it is seen how the atmosphere is in harmony with the rude and joking arguments about the wife and the sleeping couple become an interlude to joke. S. Othman Kelantan himself through life in fishing villages such as Kemumin and Sabak Beach. As a native of the coastal village, living in a coffee shop together listening to the complaints and grievances of fishermen is common. Understanding the Northeast Wind means understanding the lives of small fishermen on the East Coast, especially how they cope with the monsoon season. However, S. Othman Kelantan tried to bring to the reader that in the early days of the country's independence, there were still many farmers and fishermen who were trapped by obstacles in their social and geographical environment. Thus, understanding the Northeast Wind means understanding the data of the factors that influence the lives of fishermen. But in social philosophy voraciously said the Malay fishermen working hard physically and mentally in their efforts to pursue socio-economic life even in the most difficult and unproductive. 9 13
Perjudian (1973) The ‘Perjudian’ or known as gamble depicts that this life is exactly a minute above the bubbles of the ocean of rippling life. It takes sacrifice. It takes loyalty and it takes patience. And this life has ups and downs. That sacrifice is humanity. Loyalty is a real man and patience is the key to success. That is what Pak Mat thought all his life to dedicate himself to the land. Land is life for him. Land is the source of his sacrifice. For him, living without land, living empty like space. Pak Mat and his family live on the vacant land that he explored for a long time and then developed it with all his sweat with his wife, Mek Nab. Pak Mat was blessed with 5 children but unfortunately the four children out of 5 people are not long in age and his youngest child is a girl named Siti Sarah. What can Siti Sarah do because she cannot help hard work in the forest with Pak Mat except doing housework with Mek Nab only. Time is running out. Mek Nab endured a long illness after wild boars attacked their paddy fields and set traps and sold the pigs to Chinese traders. Mr. Mat framed. Pigs are illegal. But he took the proceeds from the sale of the pigs. Food purchased from pig price money is also illegal. And the food was eaten by his wife's son. Is this a punishment from God as a reminder for himself? But Pak Mat refuted all the assumptions that the disease was a test from God. The disease is a test of God. Who has never been sick in this world? Soon Mek Nab was as healthy as usual and could 10 14
slam with Pak Mat but his life was not long because he was bitten by a snake while working on crops in the garden. Siti Sarah, on the other hand, grew up to be a flourishing teenager. One day, Samad was the son of Pak Mat's best friend, Pak Daud, who tried to rape Siti Sarah but was unsuccessful and then disappeared without any news after that. Later, Siti Sarah finally met a man of good character, Salleh, the son of Pak Mat's friend, Imam Lebai Hasan. Let go of Pak Mat's responsibility. Test after test came in droves. Finally, one day came a notice from the government for them to move immediately from the land by promising compensation for accommodation and other land to be redeveloped. But Pak Mat did not want to. For him, the land he occupied has sacrificed all his sweat and efforts to develop it. Why not count when starting to explore and develop this land alone need to make an application to the government and then counted as illegal land? Strength cannot be built with tears and tears. Strength cannot be built with anger and hatred. But strength can be built with determination and firm determination. One determination and determination, stood up again after falling. The fall does not mean losing. The first defeat does not mean the next defeat. Finally, Pak Mat agreed to move to the new land given by the government. 11 15
Juara (1973) The novel Juara (1976) by S. Othman is a novel about a man named Mamat and his men consisting of Mat San, Jal, Seli and Salim who lost their comrade-in-arms, Abang Lazim, the father of Sani and Salim who was killed and shot after they won a bullfight. Abang Lazim was killed by Pak Isa, Dollah Mundukand some of his other friends because he was jealous and jealous of Abang Lazim's cow. Lembu Abang Lazim is called Calet. They are so dissatisfied because their cow Langsat has been defeated by Calet. This novel is based on life in the state of Siam which is bordered by Kelantan. In this story, too, Milo is a politician who had resigned after failing twice in the elections that took place in the area and he is also the backbone of the independence of Malaya at that. Mamat's resignation is due to his soul who feels that his services are no longer needed by the people or the local community and also some other factors such as great competition from other parties. Based on this story, there is a similarity between Mamat's life and his struggle in politics. Mamat who is also involved in bullfighting and also often wins the match. Winning and losing is already considered as normal as when he faced the election. Bullfighting is one of the activities that involves investing a lot of money and is categorized as gambling, that is, if the bull wins the competition, all the betting money will belong to the winner. Mamat approached the bullfighting match after the defeat in the election in Kelantan. Mamat received a lot of cow fighting knowledge from Abang Lazim. He chose to move to Siam to focus more on the bullfighting match. The advantage of Mamatwho can evaluate and choose the best cow for the match is highly respected by those who love this bullfight match, let alone his own men. Mamat's life at that time was just hovering in the area of bong and cow fighting. After the death of Caletwho was shot by Pak Isa and his cronies, Mamat trained Aral, a young cow who never entered this bullfight. Aral is well trained and often wins and becomes the champion in every match. However, the death 12 16
of Dollah Munduk has caused Mamat to be questioned and it hampered the search for Pak Isa who had killed Abang Lazim a year ago. A year after Mamat was interrogated in connection with the death of Dollah Munduk, Aral became increasingly famous. Aral once fought with a cow from Lonel Island. The cow actually belongs to Pak Isa that Mamat has been looking for. The bull's horn was coated with iron so that it was sharper and made merely to kill Aral. At that time, not only did the cows graze in the bullfighting space, but it also involved a great fight between Mamat and Pak Isa. The revenge of those who did not reciprocate was about the defeat of Pak Isa Sutu in the past and Mamat's anger over the death of Abang Lazim who was killed by Pak Isa. Finally, Pak Isa was shot dead by Mamat in front of the supporters of the bullfighting match. 13 17
Perkahwinan Rama- Rama (1984) Perkahwinan Rama-Rama displays a diversity of imaginations in the form of short stories in a variety of themes. It tells the story of the realistic nature of human beings who are created creatively from political, social, humanitarian and animalistic questions to the question of thinking that exists in the abstract. The wealth of creative imagination has demonstrated the richness and ability of the language and style used. Undoubtedly the short stories in Perkahwinan Rama-Rama have revealed almost entirely of the very complex characters of human life. It demonstrates the human ability to respond to personal problems abruptly or demonstrates a willingness to think in more sophisticated problems. Everything is presented creatively imaginatively in creating the ability and willingness of Bahasa Malaysia to accommodate and record not only academic works but also creative works. Perkahwinan Rama-Rama portrays a bunch of short stories as a result of the author's experience in recent years to discover his personality in the country's challenging world of literature. It is served as a delicacy that can only be enjoyed by critics and interested people, not to be read by people who are joking because they have a lot of free time. 14 18
Ruang Perjalanan (1989) Ruang perjalanan novel was published in 1989. This novel is a tossing of human ideas and thoughts about past, present and future life. There is no meaningful physical movement other than the internal movement which shows that the human being is his mind. Ruang perjalanan is a space that splits the tradition of novel writing in this country. This novel wants to explore the journey of human psychology, analyze history and the future. As is natural, the human idea will contradict another idea, and will likely be weakened when a stronger and more useful idea emerges. The real novel is about humans, not stories. A real human being is a collection of ideas. That is the idea that determines the intellectuality of human beings on earth who can control all areas of life. The Ruang perjalanan novel is a novel of the whole idea without a story. As is natural, the human idea will contradict another idea, and will likely be weakened when another idea emerges that is stronger and more useful. In such a dire situation, the up-to-date idea of Islam based on the Quran and hadith is the only superior that can lead human beings to the true space of life. All of this is recorded as it should in this Ruang perjalanan novel. 15 19
Beberapa Pembetulan (1990) “Beberapa Pembetulan” expressed the voice of S. Othman Kelantan about the life of the community around him who is very familiar with him. Things that touched his feelings were conveyed in a sluggish but cynical tone. This is the strength of S. Othman in his work, that is, he conveyed the message in a simple but full of implicit meaning. Sixteen short stories contained in this anthology are loaded with the story of a society that cannot escape the questions of malpractice, human greed, love, politics, religion, culture and social. All the messages are processed in an interesting storytelling style making each short story so fresh and never tired of reading. 1. Beberapa Pembetulan 2. Macam-macam 3. Siang Memanjang 4. Wajah Seorang Wanita (1990) The novel Wajah Seorang Wanita, among others, dignifies the perseverance and perseverance of Kelantanese women who come from a well- known family in the ordeal of life. It begins with the migration of families from the city to the countryside, followed by a series of heartbreaking epilogue epilogue such as the death of his father, the death of children and the death of his husband during the Japanese occupation of Kelantan. All the bitter events that happened are enough to make Siti Musalmah mature and resilient in going through all the trials in her life. However, as a woman whose nature is not as strong and as strong as the spirit of men, this character is described as accepting the burden that seems unbearable on the body deck. The greed of the Japanese army, the challenges of living as a widow and the pressure to support a family challenged her abilities which used to depend a lot on her husband. However, Siti Musalmah is described as a pious woman who surrenders her whole life to Allah, is pious and faces life with patience and sincerity. The character of Siti Musalmah is a reality portrait of Kelantanese women inspired by S. Othman Kelantan's own mother. 17 21
Ustaz (1991) As an Ustaz who received his education from Al-Azhar University, he was determined that his natiqah lust would ride the nasamah lust. He must be honest. He must be straight. he must be true in words, in intentions and deeds. Thus, the moment of determination was embedded in his heart until he faced a test when he wanted to save Datuk Jalal Akbar's family from being crushed by the things of the world. He wanted to convert a family to Islam that had deviated from faith and piety. Indeed, he is a pure human being. Blood and flesh, wallowing in emotions and feelings. When he was able to tame the female golden deer - the daughter of Datuk Jalal Akbar - suddenly the feeling of love for the girl playing around in him to the point of hitting his critical mind. Can he get out of the trapping labyrinth and surround himself? Ustaz photographed a pure love story. Although dazzled by beauty, the beauty of discretion and materialism, but it is not enough to set aside Islamic laws to always maintain faith and piety. Based on the synopsis above, we can conclude that ‘Ustaz’ is a story of yearning-revenge-love between two young people, which so touching. In the novel, we will sympathize a lot with Siti Nuriza who was originally a wild, outspoken, Western-style social girl, has successfully been restored to the spirit of Islam by Ustaz Saifuddin's religious talk at her house. However, the Ustaz felt depressed. After all, he felt thrown into the valley of sin because he began to love Siti Nuriza in silence. What is the action of the Ustaz and how will Siti Nurizaconvey the meaning of her heart? This is what S. Othman Kelantan tells in each of his chapters. Occasionally Allahyarhamseems to deliberately delay his story by developing other characters. But that is the wisdom of the writer with the style and technique that successfully makes the reader continue to flip through page after page until the end of the story patiently. 18 22
Nagogho Astana (1997) Nagogho Astana is the name of an independent country. As a developing and developed country in the third world, Nagogho Astana faces various problems in his country. At a time when the Prime Minister and his cabinet members are thinking and discussing the country's problems, the people face their problems, which seem to be separate from the government's plans and problems. Or their problems as a result of the rapid development of the country in the industrial and high-tech sectors. People in various strata of Nagogho Astana's national structure, from farmers, fishermen and labourers, to the level of political figures and university elites, think of their problems. Their thoughts and problems are varied and separate from other problems. They are all citizens and are in the country of Nagogho Astana. \"Nagogho Astana\" is a novel-short story. It highlights the thinking of the government as a whole in the genre of a novel with the presence of certain characters. But the whole problems and thoughts of the characters are formed in their own and separate parts as if some short stories were separated from each other. These are the first short stories in Malaysia, which combine the structure and techniques of general storytelling as novels, but at the same time fill the whole like several separate short stories. The characters as a whole, and their thoughts and problems, all take place in a country called \"Nagogho Astana\" which is the title of these short stories. Based on the synopsis above, we can conclude that \"NagoghoAstana\" is a rapidly developing country. It consists of thirteen provinces with the capital Nagobogho. Led by Dr Zafrullah, an efficient, innovative and insightful leader. 19 23
2 years before the tragedy that dared to oppose the injustice, we have a \"Nagogho Astana\" who also gave stabs and insinuations to what is happening in this country. All the symptoms that occur in Malaysia are gently touched by the author using the \"Nagogho Astana\" mask: prostitutes, mud floods, illegal immigrants, the justice system, the story of a teacher selling at the night market in the capital etc. To what extent are literary works so powerful to change the attitudes and views of the people/government so that these symptoms can be eliminated or not repeated? Unfortunately, now after ten years of publication, the issues peeled in \"Nagogho Astana\" remain the same. Still current, never deleted. But, other than the use of the Kelantan dialect in the title of the novel \"Nagogho Astana\" which means country, the work highlights the development as a whole. The work of S.Othman Kelantan carries a political theme with the question of humanity in urban society. Lecturer of the Faculty of Language and Communication, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Dr Ariff Mohamad, said Nagogho Astana meant in this novel is a country that does not exist in reality, but rather a fictional country in the author's mind. \"The character chosen from Nagogho Astana's novel proves that the author conveys all the behaviours in the novel have to do with real-life symbolically or directly. 20 24
Orang Kota Bharu (2003) The novel \"Orang Kota Bharu\" which is categorized as a historical novel has recorded about the life of the community in Kota Bharu. The author managed to describe the life of the community in Kota Bharu to the readers very well. The way of writing is not only tied to one type of story but also does not focus on one family only. This novel is very detailed in telling the life scenario that takes place in Kota Bharu where the community consists of various groups such as traders, fishmongers, vegetables and so on. The storyline found in this novel gives a clear picture to the readers about the harmony and peace of Kota Bharu city with its river water flow, as well as splashing ripples of anxiety, liveliness, hustle and bustle in the markets, warehouses, bases and train stations. Apart from that, the author also told general stories related to Malaysia such as the process of independence and elections, specifically describing the atmosphere that took place at that time. Every corner and space of Kota Bharu land seems to be at the end of the author's pen itself. S. Othman Kelantan in writing the novel \"Orang Kota Bharu\" uses narrative or storytelling rhetoric. In novel writing, the narrative presented by the author certainly contains structural elements such as themes, questions, characters and characters, backgrounds, plots, perspectives and various language styles. Storytelling rhetoric consists of four parts such as introduction, story development, conflict and resolution, both ending in comedy or tragedy. The storytelling is also imaginative and uses figurative language to give a profound effect on the reader. Moreover, narrative rhetoric is more of an expressive nature which means the birth of a purpose or message through thought in writing. Based on the researcher's research, S. Othman Kelantan tells a lot about Kota Bharu with the history of the origin of its 21 25
name, its geographical position, its political situation and its people with various cultural elements. In general, novel writing carries a relatively long narrative fiction story. The characters featured by the author represent human life in the world of reality either in the present or in the past. Based on the analysis of the novel, S. Othman Kelantan uses narrative type rhetoric in his writing by displaying the historical facts of Kota Bharu as the capital of Kelantan. Narrative rhetoric has four parts of storytelling, namely the introduction or beginning of the story, the development of the story, the conflict and the resolution or conclusion in the story. The novel is divided into 17 chapters or sections and each chapter has a different life story from each other. S. Othman Kelantan displays the life of various human beings in the city of Kota Bharu. Among them are men who like to play Aji, like to gamble against chickens, like to fight, and so on. They are described as less responsible for the family. The business of earning a living for the family is left to the women. They spend more time on useless work. S. Othman Kelantan displays the life of various human beings in the city of Kota Bharu. Conclusion S. Othman Kelantan has made a huge contribution in the field of novel writing in the country. He who is also the figure of the 9th National Literary Award is a patriotic person in producing high quality works. In each work, he will definitely insert elements of patriotism as well as highlight the background of the story that took place in his hometown, the state of Kelantan. Many of his works are based on the state of Kelantan and the community in Kelantan in particular. Despite having succeeded to the highest level, he still has not forgotten his home state.
