201617 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITYUnitedWayof Indian River County United Way of Indian River County

DEAR FRIENDS, We are happy to report that our 2016-2017 annual campaign raised the highest amount in our history with a record $3,051,063. Campaign Co-chairs, Kyle and Debbie Morgan led the effort which involved hundreds of volunteers including a Campaign Cabinet, Loaned Executives, Employee Campaign Coordinators, Torchbearers, Elite Campaign Sponsors, Workplace Partners, and Direct Mail Volunteers. Donors were generous and we appreciate the confidence they have in our work and the way we do business. We shared some good news in February 2017 from the ALICE Report Update released by the United Way of Florida. The report provides county-by-county, city-level data and analysis of how many households are struggling, including the obstacles ALICE, (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), households face on the road to financial independence. Median household income increased, and households living below the ALICE threshold decreased. Unfortunately, the household survival budget increased. Learn more about ALICE and see the full report here UnitedWayIRC.org/alice. Our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program increased the number of prepared tax returns by 32%. 760 returns were filed bringing a refund amount of $794,053 back to this county. Tax preparer cost savings were estimated at $133,000. United Way’s partnership with H&R Block and its My Free Taxes software program allowed free federal tax preparation and filing which streamlined the task for families, individuals, and our volunteers. We also increased the number of tax filing support locations to five, making the service more accessible to Indian River County residents. The 4th annual Jackie Robinson Celebration Game was enjoyed by almost 7,000 fans at Historic Dodgertown’s Holman Stadium on April 15. The St. Lucie Mets and Kissimmee Fire Frogs played a regular season minor league baseball game at what has become a phenomenal community-wide event that is inspirational, family friendly, affordable, and lots of fun. Watch for information on the upcoming game scheduled for Jackie Robinson Day, April 15, 2018. United Way of Indian River County continues to do the critical but largely invisible work required to reach community goals – we recruit people to the cause, get commitments for action, and pull together the expertise and resources that get it done. We invite you to help us change lives. Visit UnitedWayIRC.org to follow our work and find meaningful opportunities for service. Sincerely, Michael Kint Susan Adams Chief Executive Officer Board Chair

COMMUNITY IMPACT UWIRC is focused on education, financial stability and health because those are building blocks of a good quality of life, and the pathway to opportunity.   A good education is essential to getting a good job with a livable wage and health benefits. Financial stability can ensure that today’s needs are met and provide the opportunity to save for tomorrow. Access to quality healthcare keeps children on track in school and adults productive at work. Remove any one building block, and the other two topple. Build them all up, and we have a strong foundation for collective success. With your support, we better prepare children to enter kindergarten ready to learn, to read at grade level by the third grade, and stay on track to graduate high school and go on to being college or career-ready. We help more working individuals and families improve their financial literacy and stability. We help build a healthier community for all children, adults, families and seniors, and support our most vulnerable neighbors when they need a hand up most. The endowment is being built through a combination of current contributions and deferred planned gifts including commitments for a charitable gift to the United Way Foundation in one’s will, living trust, or estate plan.  It affords donors the opportunity to perpetuate their financial support and provide for the future health and human service needs of Indian River County. Gifts to the Foundation are invested for growth with a percentage available for distribution each year to support and sustain the critically important work being done in education, financial stability and health. By providing a dependable revenue stream year after year, these gifts ensure the UWIRC is positioned to respond to pressing community needs, now and in the future. We gratefully acknowledge our Legacy Society members that have made commitments to being a partner in our critical work in perpetuity.  At the end of the 2016-17 fiscal year, the United Way Foundation of Indian River County had $3.7M in assets under management with another $4M in documented legacy gifts that will be made in the future. FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY United Way of Indian River County Donors continue to see the value of investing in United Way of Indian River County’s Community Impact approach to local problems, leading the way from quick fixes to real, lasting change. Individuals, businesses, corporations and foundations supported UWIRC’s efforts to bring in $3,179,566 in fiscal 2016-2017. UWIRC continues to be trusted, in part because of our intentional transparency and due diligence. United Way Worldwide (UWW) requires a Membership Certification each year which includes evidence that our organization meets all Federal and local operating and reporting requirements. UWIRC has an active, responsible and voluntary governing body, which approves necessary policies for such things as diversity, a code of ethics, and an annual financial audit. A three year business performance self-assessment of our community impact work, financial management, organizational governance and decision making is completed and shared with UWW. Please find copies of our Community Report, our IRS 990 and our most recent audit at UnitedWayIRC.org/financial-information.
