MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK Ms. Kalpana Dhareshwar Principal, Mother's Pet Kindegarten. PARENTS AS TEACHERS Dear Parents, My first question to parents at our meetings - \"Who is the first TEACHER of a child?\"- And inevitably, to my utter shock and dismay, the answer is MOTHER.\"Why is the FATHER missing?\" I ask and \"the missing fathers\" give a sheepish grin!! When will we realize that the role of a father and mother is critical in bringing up a child? The first TEACHER is the father and mother. My question to our MPK Teachers in our workshop - What are the qualities of a Teacher? The list begins with a host of adjectives- loving, kind, gentle, hardworking, bold, sympathetic, empathetic and on and on...... The labels for an ideal Teacher - knowledge seeker, super woman (need to have 4 eyes/ hands/ legs), magician (a magic hat to pull out ideas to sustain a child's interest), counsellor (instinctively know when a child needs help), mentor, friend, philosopher, guide!! My tag for a teacher - SAINT! A teacher needs to have loads and loads of patience- a serene, calm persona in the midst of chaos and crisis - a smile that soothes. The latest tag- a Techie - thanks to the pandemic. When I say TEACHER, I include the Parent along with the MPK Teacher. Today the Covid has made you an integral part of the teaching/ learning process. This long list makes the Teacher's role overwhelming. And we all forget a teacher is HUMAN not GOD. However, at MPK we have devised coping mechanisms that help us in nurturing our little babies. Here are a few MPK mantras: Don't raise your VOICE, don't raise your HAND. Practise this mantra till it becomes a Practice. Respect your child. Don't compare your child; each one is different. Use your words carefully - labels like \"buddhu\", \"naughty\",\"badmash\" stay with the child forever. Use positive strokes, they are magic. The fewer the \"DON'T\" the better. Be firm and consistent with rules and accepted/unaccepted behaviour. Seek professional help when you feel you can't cope. Most importantly, ENJOY your moments with your child, let your child know she/ he is loved unconditionally. Every moment is precious; BLINK and they have grown up, all ready to leave the nest. Treasure these years. When you work from your heart, you always do the right thing.

Ms. Ruchi Goel Vice Principal, Sadar. WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO Mother's Pet Kindergarten has completed 42 long years since its foundation in 1979 by Mrs.Aruna Upadhyaya. From a humble beginning in Sadar, with a few children, it has grown to four branches covering all the 4 corners of the city and is rocking the education scene of Nagpur. The reason for our growth and sustainability in the field of providing quality early childhood education has been our methodology and the developmentally appropriate practices that we have been following right from the time of our inception, when these phrases were not even being spoken about by educationists. Our practices and playway method of teaching comes instinctively from the heart. We understand the \"100 languages of a child\" and work towards the development of the whole child by providing a safe and secure environment coupled with love and care, so that the child learns and acquires the various skills joyfully. When the Covid-19 pandemic struck, we took up the challenge head - on and ensured that the child's learning continued in the same seamless manner, without compromising on any of the areas of the child's development, be it Cognitive, Affective or Psychomotor (CAP). After a series of brainstorming sessions, we came up with a well-balanced programme to lay the foundation for lifelong learning. In the first few weeks, the focus was on building a bond with our little babies by giving them a feeling of comfort and security in the virtual classroom. So the motto was 'reaching out' before 'teaching'. Once the bond was built, the teaching and formal work gained momentum. The lessons in the online mode of teaching learning are planned meticulously keeping in mind the prior knowledge of the child at all levels and also the readiness of a child to learn and Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Be it teaching a letter of the English alphabet, number, an akshar of the Hindi varnamala or any topic related to the child's environment, we follow a pattern, keeping in mind the three learning domains of Bloom’s Taxonomy, namely cognitive, affective and psychomotor.

Our teaching does not follow the pen- paper or chalk - and - talk methods. We start any lesson with experiential learning using the body or the immediate surroundings. This way the learning is embedded in the mind of a child so much that on seeing a billboard while driving down a road, the child begins to read the letters, numbers or words written on it or begins to recognize the colour, shape or size of the objects seen on it. We continued giving our little babies activities to polish their gross and fine motor skills and finally their pincer skills. So the structured activities like the games organized on Fridays and the exercises and energizers taken up daily during the Morning Routine were incorporated in our daily online curriculum too. Drawing, painting, scribbling, paper tearing, cutting, pasting, dough play, finger rhymes, role play have helped in the development of muscles and improving eye- hand coordination. The EPL activities are taken to make the child independent and develop his self-confidence, apart from providing sensory experiences. For language development, we have story telling sessions, speaking rounds, word building games, picture talk, music and rhymes and opportunities for free expression and questioning. When we speak of a holistic development, the social and emotional aspect cannot be neglected. So to take care of that, we have activities like know your buddy, birthday celebration, celebration of festivals, interactive way of taking attendance, making leaders to conduct sessions, to name a few; which brings joy to our virtual classrooms too. It is our well-crafted methodology and practices that makes a Mother's Pet child a child possessing high self-esteem and confidence. So, parents, we have a reason for all that we do in class/school because for us the child's holistic development is the topmost priority. We know what we do and the reason why we do and hence we are where we are today, proudly, at the top of the early childhood scene in Nagpur.

Ms. Monica Khurana Vice Principal, Wardhaman Nagar. Reaching before Teaching When the Covid pandemic hit education, our worst foe became our best buddy. Technology which was the biggest taboo for all educationists, especially in kindergarten, became the only saviour. Teaching for MPK has and never will be a challenge but reaching through technology surely was without the hugs, ear to ear smiles, warm talks and gestures, how would we reach out to the heart of a kindergarten kid? This time, to add to the challenge, we had to reach the parents too. Challenges can break you or make you and at MPK there is no choice, so we had to make it. We realized a smile carries a million miles if it comes from the heart and when you put your heart and soul into any task, every challenge is achievable. So we embarked upon this journey with smiles and confidence in our hearts and on our faces. Virtual hugs and dancing stars stepped in for warm hugs and incentives. We laughed and cried together. We became companions not only to the children but to siblings, parents, grandparents - - - as well. We danced, sang, played, narrated stories and rhymes together on screen. Our attendance never ever went down and children did not want the classes to end. They had loads to share not only with teachers but with their peers as well. We gave them an online platform to connect and socialize. The tears that rolled down the cheeks of children and family members before vacations reiterated that we had Reached with a Bang, and teaching followed suit without a challenge. It taught us the biggest lesson for life. “Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.” “ALWAYS REACH BEFORE YOU TEACH & PREACH.”

HERD FOUNDATION “Through a Child’s Eye” was a project led by Herd Foundation where they displayed the children’s artwork in a progressive learning space. The paintings of our children Aashna Batra and Shivank Mendiretta were displayed on the pillars of the Nagpur City Metro at Chaoni.

Celebrating festivals and various events has been an integral part of our curriculum planning. Focus on the Joy Quotient of the children along with the development of IQ and EQ has made Mother’s Pet a paradise for our kindergarteners. Celebrations no doubt are a major source of joy at school, hence every important event in the life of a kindergartener e.g., using a textbook for the first time (Book Ceremony), or using a pencil to write for the first time (Pencil Ceremony) is celebrated along with various festivals. Children love dressing up for these occasions as it allows them to do various fun-filled activities with their friends thus building their confidence and social skills too to speak before an audience , hence building self-esteem. We strongly believe that these celebrations help strengthen the bond of brotherhood amongst the children belonging to diverse religious beliefs in India and also give a strong foundation to our children where they develop a sense of pride in our rich culture and traditions. Even in online schooling, we celebrated with great fervour all the religious and national festivals that fell in July, August, September and October. Here are the glimpses of all these celebrations at all the four branches of Mother’s Pet Kindergarten.

Learning the letter \"Dd\" of the alphabet became momentous for the NURSERY baby as it was accompanied by a special activity - an exclusive DATE with DADDY. Every child's superhero, Daddies spent quality time with their little ones singing, dancing and playing games. These activities not only add the fun element but are great in building social and emotional skills. Grandparents' Day click here to watch the video https://youtu.be/PgpJpA_jvJg The toddlers of Pre- Nursery spent a special day dedicated to Nana,Nani,Dada, Dadi. It was truly special for the grandparents as they were a part of the celebration and got a peek into their grandchild's classroom. Music, dance and fun activities enlivened this event.

Pencil Ceremony Dear Madam/Sir, We are really impressed with your gesture to celebrate the Pencil Ceremony today in school. The way you talked about pencil being a child's best friend was simply awesome. Teaching the importance of small celebrations and the importance of small things requires BIG thinking. We are glad that our daughter is in the right hands. Appreciatively yours Smita and Abhishek (Parents of Shriya Singh. KGI)

TEACHER'S EXPERIENCE Ms. Ravleen Singh Teacher, Dabha .. As a kindergarten teacher, life was going on wonderfully, till we were struck by the big tiny green bomb, known as Corona. Initially we all took it rather easily, till its effects started affecting each one of us in some way or the other. Trying to console myself that maybe this is the year for a sabbatical, we were suddenly summoned by our school to start with the children’s studies. With loads of hard work, experiments, learning new techniques, taking the help of my IT friends and so on, finally made me slightly more tech savvy and lo and behold, I was ready to take up the first day of the online class for my kindergarten children. Finally the ball started rolling and the part I really missed was meeting my children physically. But then there is a saying that make the best out of the present moment and that was exactly what I was trying to do. In school we were taught to manage our feelings by binning the negative ones and bringing the positive ones into the classroom. So I kept that in mind and woke up every morning to start on a positive note, but suddenly I would realise that I am not in school, I am at home; hopping with my laptop from one room to the other to find a better wifi connection and to stay away from the sound of the pressure cooker whistling. Thank goodness for the mute button!!!! The children’s mind is said to be like a sponge, they absorb whatever is given to them in a jiffy. My children learnt how to mute and unmute the microphone so quickly that it pleasantly surprised me. From those days to now, we have come far in our online experience. How can I miss sharing a couple of unforgettable incidents which happened in my class. Children are very observant, alert and as smart as their smart devices. One day I planned a listening game for them where they had to listen to their friends’ voices and had to guess whose it is. I already had their videos recorded with me which I started playing only on my screen and asked them to guess. The children were guessing the names in a split second without even listening to the voices fully. I was taken by surprise and failed to understand how this could be possible until my co teacher told me that the children had pinned my screen and were seeing the reflection of my screen on my spectacles . Now this is what I call the children of Gen Next; smart and overly smart!! Mother’s Pet has always been dynamic. We like our children to participate in the various competitions held for them. One such competition held by Euroschool North Campus Bangalore was on Character Crooning for which we selected a few children to participate. Struggling with some novel ideas to suggest to the parents, I could think of only a few common ones. But to my great surprise, Anhay Mukkewar’s mother came up with one of the most novel ideas of the child becoming a ‘Gratitude Book’. She prepared his dress and his song so well that we were all pleasantly surprised to see such a novel idea. We all, including my children have learnt the importance of showing gratitude towards what God has given us. This pandemic has surely given us creative mothers who are now the teachers at home. Wonderful, isn’t it? Parents are equal partners for the overall development of our children. Once during our ‘Morning exercise session’, a mom couldn’t hold herself back from dancing and enjoyed herself thoroughly along with her baby; to the extent that the child got tired and sat down but mummy was still on with her dancing shoes. Kudos to all the enthusiastic mothers !!! This pandemic has brought about drastic changes in children, parents, teachers and the whole community for the better. I am thankful to the Almighty and our heads for making me strong and teaching me to push through thick and thin. The most beautiful way is MPK all the way. Ravleen Singh
