INDIAN SCHOOL AL MAABELA (ISO 9001:2015 CERTIFIED INSTITUTION)

From the Editors’ desk ………. “ Perfection, as culture conceives it, is not possible while the individual remains isolated. The individual is required, under pain of being stunted and enfeebled in his own development if he disobeys, to carry others along with him in his march towards perfection.”-Matthew Arnold Could ignorance ever be blissful? Yes and No. But, it can ill-afford to replace the discursive range of necessary information towards which we endlessly strive, day-in day-out, to make the cut in our respective areas of interest. There remains forever this urge ‘to know’. For to know is to feel and to feel is to hit upon the realization to outgrow and outperform, to overcome the set limits that hold us back. With a pristine purpose of presenting all that transpired in a marked period of time, we are coming forth with our first edition of ‘ Wizard of Word’ – to help our students embark upon the bandwagon of informative, educative and creative impulses. All contents- are voiced in a delectable assortment of multifarious musings that aspire to work as a binding vine of perennial growth and development.

We are pretty hopeful that the reading would be rewarding to the ISAM fraternity as it would serve as a verdant landscape of scientific, creative, technical and literary outpourings that support teaching and research for the sake of exposure and expansion. The small initiatives that we take go a long way in building upon the edifice of knowledge that empowers and emboldens, breaking free from compulsive, obsessive, complacency which is lethal, to say the least. We are thankful to our respected Principal Mr.P.Prabakaran for his unstinting support; Vice Principal Dr Gladis Diana Sivakumar for her valuable insights; Assistant Vice Principal (middle) Mrs Seema Sreedhar for her encouragement & Middle section English faculties for their enthused efforts to help “ Wizard of Word” come alive. We dedicate the first issue of “ Wizard of Word” to all aficionados of good work………..

Admins’ Musings! A Galore Of Artefacts Artistic Adornments Pedagogues’ Pages Wrack Your Brain

Dear Readers, Greetings and good wishes! Incredible ISAM! It inspires all of us. Being the Principal of this Prestigious Institution, I indeed feel privileged to reflect my musings on its credentials and prowess. The E-magazine “Wizard ofWord’ is yet another significant move wherein the students have been extended an opportunity to empower and get empowered with their expertise in writing. In their pursuit of excellence, the students have delved deep to portray their flair for writing in creating thought- provoking articles, crafty crafts, heart-warming poems, titbits, funny riddles and whatnot. I’m wonderstruck at the amazing creative skills of our students. I do hope that this step that’s kept ahead to sparkle the young mind could be a giant stride in days to come. Let this journey of exploration soar high above and touch the sky. All the best and God bless your future endeavours. Regards, P. Prabakaran, Principal, ISAM.

Dear Students, With everything that is happening right now, you're probably spending a lot more time at home than you are used to. To help spread positivity, we have gathered our friends’ best articles for finding the right balance whilst at home. Be kind to yourself, your loved ones and your community. We run through everything you need to know to keep smiling. This is a beautiful Wizard of Word e-magazine – sparse of text – with varieties . The readers lose themselves in pages that are achingly evocative of yearning, loss and wonder in a kind of heady cocktail of intense emotion, boredom and stoicism. There is space here for even very young readers to express what they think. The language is fun, with word play and characters’ attitudes. I want to convey ‘Special Thanks’ to the teachers and students of ISAM who have contributed immensely to make this happen. This is your time and do what you need to do to keep your mind peaceful. I wish you all the best and stay safe. Happy Reading!!! God bless!!! Regards, Dr.Gladis Diana Sivakumar Vice Principal.

Warm Greetings to all my beloved students!!! The E-Magazine Wizard of Word is an excellent platform to bring out the hidden talents of our beloved students. I appreciate the diligent work of the teachers who rendered support to unlock this treasure of ISAM. I congratulate all the teachers and students for having contributed their efforts to bring out this edition successfully. I am so happy to use this platform to reach my dear students once again. Though we are not meeting every day in the school campus due to this recent world-wide pandemic, we are able to meet through virtual classes. Staying safe is required now, so follow the instructions given by elders. Utilize your precious time in reading or doing some creative work like painting, singing, cooking, craft work or making educational videos. Share your good work with your teachers as well. The way the difficult times have come, the same way they will disappear , we need to be optimistic and have faith . Staying far from your friends and teachers may extend just for a few more days, but staying safe is more necessary at present. So Stay In and Stay Safe. Wishing all my dear students –‘Happy learning from home’. Regards, Seema Sreedhar Assistant Vice Principal ,Middle ISAM

Sunrise It’s so nice to wake up early in the morning, to see the sun just rising. There are many shades of colours: and they look like the sky a canvas of hues. There are shades of red, yellow and orange, it’s magical sight a multicoloured range. I wish I would be the sun at rise: to illumine the world and to make people rise He smiles at me and I smile back, and I look into his magnificent eyes. He blinks his eyes which sparkles a diamond, all crystal like and wonderful. When he sets in the evening I wave my hands it’s as if he says good bye. We both will see each other the next day, I wish this meet to happen ever and ever!. By Merlin Maria Pradeep VII G

THE NIGHT SKY THE NIGHT SKY Aparna Binu – 6 E I looked at the night sky, with all the twinkling stars, along with the moon where all seemed bright. I looked out of my window, before bed, saw a shooting star and whispered my wish to the night. The light from the night sky touched the walls of the garden to catch the thieves who roamed around my garden. When I woke up, the next day, the night sky disappeared. THE SUN WOKE UP and the bright day showed up again. By: Sneha Binoy- 6G

Pedagogues’ Pages In this journey called life, I am given the path of a failure. Failed but never I tried and tried to change my fate, surrendered but every attempt went in vain leaving me exhausted and tired. On a dark and gloomy day, When I was walking through the woods, thoughts of my downfall swirled in my mind making it restless & hurt. With deterioration consuming my brain, I decided to halt for my mind to reset. Sitting idle on a bench near the shore, I allowed the cool breeze to hit my skin. Eerie silence encompassed within and around me, as I sat with elbows on my knees & face in my palms. All of a sudden I turned left to notice a little boy, probably a nine year old, attempting to reach the temple bell. He attempted a few more times but failed to even reach close. With his head held down in despair, he retreated a few steps, But gathering his determination and strength, he came back running. With a single jump of will, he reached high and rang the bell. I couldn't help but amazed at the pride on the kid's face.

WE WILL GET OVER IT Again the world will be on, as the covid-19 will be gone, the children will again giggle in the park, and we won't fear from the dark. Be strong in these challenging times, And support others which is sublime , Though they are not mine, still we will shine. Till now many have lost lives, pray for them for the solace that it gives. We will fight hand in hand, success will be ours on this land. Hold the magic stick of hope, Only then we can cope, by climbing on this rope. Though this mere organism has made our lives difficult, but am sure we will get over it with an exult. Mrs Refat Teacher Department of Science Middle Section

CHANGE THAT FROWN ON YOUR FACE

THE LEGEND OF HI! I am Robert, the story of the arcane dragon started from a picnic with my friends. I went THE ARCANE DRAGON for a two-day picnic with my friends, Jane, and Leo, to a forest. It was very adventurous. I drove my favourite Jeep to the jungle and stopped in front of a muddy land. We walked to a greenish place which seemed wonderful to me. We spread a mat, ate our favourite dishes which we brought and cream cakes as well. After all that, we went for a treasure hunt as we planned. We went in different directions and within an hour we came back. Jane said, “I have found a gold ring from the stream.” She was so delighted and examined the ring. Immediately Leo said, “See here, I have found a mother-of- pearl shell.” Jane anxiously looked at that and inspected . After some time, they looked at me to know what I got. I said, “I have found an egg.” Both laughed like anything. I was not sad because I knew that what I got was really something special. Before I could utter a word, the egg busted. I was shocked and looked at my friends. They were panicked by the noise and after some time we realised that it was a baby dragon. It was getting darker and we found a place to put up the tent. I kept the baby dragon safely in a box and kept the box near me. The next day we came back home and kept it on the table, then immediately I searched for my biology book to refer about the creature. Yes, there I found the description about it and I was really surprised to read that. It would grow bigger in minutes if it is in water as it is a water creature. I ran to the table to take the dragon out of the box and kept it in my backpack. I ran to Leo’s house hastily and told him everything about the creature. He got ready in a few minutes and we both left for Jane’s house. Jane was watering her plants.

When I went near her to explain about the water creature, I felt a sudden vibration in my backpack. When I opened it and let the dragon out and it sprinted to Jane’s plants and started to eat one by one. Jane screamed and said, “Yey, he is a veg.” We went inside her house. All of us started thinking to give a name for it. “I suggest Joe.” Said Jane. “I suggest Jack”, I said. After much discussion, we fixed the name Jack. Many days passed with fun with Jack and a day came when he was discovered by a tourist when we went for a safari. He took pictures. We left the place immediately realising the danger. But within a day we came to know the shocking news. It spread like wildfire. Our hearts were pumping heavily on hearing the news. We thought to hide Jack quickly to save him. But where? We couldn’t keep Jack even in the garage. Suddenly an idea struck my head. I said, “Have you forgotten he is a water creature. He can live in the lake. He will be comfortable over there even if it grows, as the lake is very deep.” Leo said, “Yes, it is a nice idea.” We all hurried towards the lake with Jack. Just by seeing the lake Jack sprinted towards it. He seemed highly enthusiastic. He jumped suddenly into the lake. We were happy to see that. But we could not believe our eyes. It started growing like anything. It was so big within minutes. I understood that the biology book was right. Even though I read it, I was not ready to believe the contents completely. But now it proved right. Leo and Jane cried out, “Robert, you are right. It is growing big.”

We waited for an hour and after some time it came back to us, we were scared a bit, but it licked me, and we gave him bread with lettuce, tomatoes, and sliced potatoes. We said goodbye to him and came back home. We did not go out anywhere during the daytime. Every midnight we would go to the lake to feed Jack. It continued for some weeks. One day we went to a movie so we could not see Jack. The next day, I was not well so didn’t meet Jack. So, I thought to meet him the next midnight. But we could not find Jack there. Many days passed. We were so sad. One day Leo called me to say something. Words were not coming out of his mouth. I got panicked and told him to tell the matter. Immediately he said to turn on my TV. The shocking news…… A reporter said, “A large dragon found dead with a green monster. Scientists found that the green monster which was a creature from the other planet was about to attack earth. The remains of the spaceship were also found near the lake. The dragon attacked the spaceship and the green monster got killed in the fight. The dragon was gravely wounded in the fight and died later. I ran to the lake with Jane and Leo. Tears were rolling down our eyes. We went near Jack; Jack was so huge but looked so innocent. We cried bitterly. The police men asked us to move from there. We left the place. That night I couldn’t sleep. I sat on my bed and asked myself, “Was that the hand of God that helped us?” I heard, “Yes. It was.” “But why did he save the land by sacrificing his own life? “I didn’t get an answer. The world is dying We always wonder about the extinct species we study every day. But Don’t you care? what really happened? .We are responsible for half of the extinct, or may be more than a half. No, it’s not dinosaurs, but think about the dodos. AMAN ASHAR Yes, we are responsible for them. Do you know the great awk, maybe, may VI C not be? Have you seen the movie ‘Rio 2’ ? Sorry to tell that they are extinct in the wild. Do you know about the quagga? You might not be familiar with this animal, but this was the older brother of the zebra and can be barely distinguished. The thylacine the ancestor hyenas, the Zanzibar leopard, the passenger pigeon, Indian cheetahs, and we could write a whole book about the extinct species in the last 150 years. The double of the extinct species are endangered. The government is taking strong safety measures against illegal trading of animal parts, and poaching and selling them illegally as pets, causing their declination. I am greatly pleased by the actions and hard work of the people who contributed their lives for a very great purpose .The people who sacrificed their time and efforts for the good. But what can we do?. Well a lot of things actually …….. If we are ready to work hard, and if we do nothing, you can imagine what will happen. But if we stand strong for a common purpose, we can save the species. It’s not too late. Now you choose, you can do nothing and watch these animals die or we stand strong and protect these animals? No children of the coming generation should complain about not seeing the animals we see now. Our stories of how we stood strong and did something legendary shall be told till time ends. It’s we do if not they die. Who cares …………………….it’s WE !!!

We boarded our flight from Muscat and arrived at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Jordan on 6th September,2019. We set out to visit Madaba, an ancient town in Jordan, where we visited a Greek Orthodox Church of St George, which is known for its 6th century mosaic map of the Holy Land. Next we visited Mount Nebo, which is mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Holy Land. We could see Jerusalem and Jericho from the top of Mount Nebo. We also saw a Serpentine Cross sculpture, an olive tree which was planted by Pope John Paul II and the Byzantine Chapel. Our next destination was The Baptismal Site of Jesus at Bethany, beyond the Jordan river. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes churches, baptismal pools, pilgrim stations, cave of John the Baptist. Another leading attraction of Jordan is the Dead Sea. It is the saltiest lake in the world, and this prevents fishes and aquatic plants from living in it, and so it is called the Dead Sea. Because of its high salt content , people who bathe in it can float on the water. We too had a wonderful experience, floating on the Dead Sea. On our long way travel to a place called Aquaba , we saw the Lot’s wife’s pillar, which has biblical significance. Next day we had a wonderful experience, riding in a speed boat through the Red Sea. The boat had a glass floor through which we could see the beautiful underwater Coral Reefs of the Red Sea. We also later visited The Wadi Rum Steam Engine station . Our next destination was the historic Petra, which is one of the seven New Wonders of the World. The City of Petra was carved from a single Rose Red Sandstone rock, around 4000 years back. Next day , we visited Shobak Castle, which is an old commercial centre in Amman. We also visited The Amman Citadel , which is a colorful site, rich in history, with a Roman Architecture. We also got to enjoy some of the Jordan delicacies like Mansaf and Manakish. On the night of 9th September, we returned to Muscat, with a baggage of short and sweet memories in our heart which would be remembered and cherished forever… REUBEN AMALA CHANDRAN 7 G
