POTENTATE 2020

Shriners Creed Shriners believe in God and that He created man to serve His purposes, among which is service to others in His name. We believe that care for the less fortunate, especially children who suffer from burns and crippling diseases, is our institutional calling. We are patriots, each willing to serve his country with fidelity and courage. We cherish independence under law and freedom with responsibility. We honor family. We respect our parents, wives and children. Our intentions will be honorable, our relations will be trustworthy and our spirits forgiving of each other. As brothers we offer each other fraternal affection and respect. Together we will support each other in adherence to this creed, so that we and our communities will be the better because of our fraternity and its principles. As Shriners we look beyond ourselves to serve the needs of others, especially children who cannot help themselves. We believe Shriners Hospitals to be the world’s greatest philanthropy, and we covenant with each other to support its “temples of mercy” with spirit, time, talent and means.

AVAILABLE TO SHRINERS PERMANENT CONTRIBUTING MEMBERSHIP Any member of Elf Khurafeh Temple may purchase, for the sum of $150.00, a Permanent Contributing Membership in Shriners Hospitals for Children and receive a Certificate therefore. Such a purchase relieves the member from making any further annual payment of the $5.00 Hospital Assessment now considered a part of the regular annual dues of every Shriner. The purchase price of a P.C.M. is deductible from income tax in the year paid. VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTING MEMBERSHIP Any individual or organization may receive a Voluntary Permanent Contributing Membership Certificate by making a minimum contribution of $60.00 to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. 100 MILLION DOLLAR CLUB To substantially increase the Endowment Fund of Shriners Hospitals for Children every Noble is given the opportunity to join the “100 Million Dollar Club.” The perpetuation of this fund is desperately needed to meet the rising costs of maintaining the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children and Burn Institutes. The Club derives its name from the fact that were it possible for each of the over 900,000 Shriners in North America to contribute, during his lifetime, $100.00 or more, the sum total would be approximately 100,000,000 dollars. Four methods are available for obtaining Club membership and the handsome certificate that goes with it. 1. By having a will leaving a bequest to the Hospitals 2. By adding a provision of codicil to an existing will leaving the Hospital a bequest 3. By naming Shriners Hospitals for Children as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy for at least the minimum amount. 4. By making an immediate donation of at least $100.00 through the Recorder of your Temple. Membership will be recorded with the Imperial Council Office and a suitable certificate furnished. All you have to do is notify Elf Khurafeh Temple that you have complied with any of the methods. No details necessary. -2–

Dear Nobles and Ladies, I am honored and humbled to have been chosen to lead Elf Khurafeh Shrine in 2020. You have entrusted me with preserving and building upon the traditions and principals of our Temple and Shriners International. This trust will not be neglected nor abused. I will stand unwavering before you, and champion the stability and growth of our Temple. I, and our dedicated and united Divan, will serve you, guided by a strict code of ethics, a moral code founded in our Masonic and Shrine teachings. We will be open and will answer your questions with the best, most accurate, information we have available to us. As the Roaring 20’s was an era of unbridled growth and excitement, we enter the 2020’s with the same enthusiasm. Fun, Fellowship, and Fraternal Friendship will lead us to new heights. The Divan, collectively, are striving to bring events and programs to promote these principals. We strive to be recognized by Shriners International as a Silver Temple. Membership, leadership, stewardship, and COMMUNICATION are cornerstones of this goal. With the nobility’s support, we will grow our Temple, and meet this goal. Lady Connie, and the Divan Ladies, will be promoting programs to improve our outreach to Shrine Families. Their activities are aimed at promoting participation of our young families, our Shrine Kids, and the Imperial First Lady’s project. Our support of these events will strengthen our Temple for the future. Lady Connie and I are dedicating this year to members of the United States Military, who have fought for, and given their lives, preserving our country and freedoms, so we may enjoy the Fun, Fellowship, and Friendship of the Shrine. God bless each of you who have fought for us and may God’s eternal love comfort the families of those we have lost. With your help, we will Restore the Roar in 2020 with FUN, FELLOWSHIP, and FRIENDSHIP! Yours in Faith, -6– Ill Sir John E Arnould Potentate, 2020 Elf Khurafeh Shrine

SHRINE PROTOCOL ACCEPTED SALUTATION, ETC. The Salaam: - A Noble addressing the Potentate while he is presiding in the East should always give the Salaam. The Salaam is always given by the Potentate and members of his Divan when receiving the Imperial Potentate, Imperial Officers and Past Imperial Potentates. The Imperial Potentate as well as the Imperial Officers and the Past Imperial Potentates do not Salaam in return but give the sign of the order. Salutation: - An Imperial Officer as well as Past Imperial Potentate is always addressed as “Imperial Sir”. A Potentate or Past Potentate is always addressed as “Illustrious Sir”. Salute: - The Military Salute is used when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and during the playing or singing of the National Anthem. Prayer: - During the offering of a prayer, the Fez should be removed and held in the right hand over the heart. Dress: - Formal attire for a Shriner is Fez and Tuxedo. Tuxedo should not be worn before five o’clock in the afternoon unless continuous program for earlier hours makes same necessary or advisable. Shrine Pledge of Allegiance: - “I pledge allegiance to my flag and the country for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.” Salute to the Flag: - A Noble who is wearing his Fez will execute a right hand salute when the Colors are within six paces of him; he will not remove his Fez. After the Colors have passed he should drop his right hand. At Shrine Meetings: - When the Potentate is the highest Shrine Officer present, he is always the last person to be called upon to speak. - 17 –
