2017IMPACTREPORT

FOUNDER'S WORDS CHRIS MANLEY 2017 was a banner year for Rebuild Upstate. We celebrated our 10th year of repairing and rehabilitating homes in the Upstate. We changed the lives of 160 families forever by repairing their home and making it a safe, healthy place to live. We planned for the future, adopting a 3-year strategic plan that will guide us to serve hundreds and hundreds of more families in desperate need of help. How, you might ask, did we accomplish all of this in one year? The answer is quite simple: YOU. Over 1,300 volunteers gave of your time to improve the lives of others. Many of you financially supported our work to make it all possible. Prayers were lifted by countless people – prayers for us to make life-changing differences in the lives of the homes we served. On behalf of the 160 families now living in better homes, I have two words for you that somehow still fall short of the appreciation you deserve: thank you. As we look to the future, we have ambitious plans. They are ambitious because they must be in order to meet the need in our own backyard. Over one thousand homes are on our waiting list hoping and praying for help. By 2020, we hope to: Repair and rehabilitate 400 homes each year Complete 1,000 home repair projects each year Raise awareness for affordable housing preservation across the Upstate With your help, we can do it. With your help, together, we can meet the needs of families on the verge of losing hope. I envision an Upstate where everyone has the opportunity to live a life of dignity in a safe home environment in order to maintain and foster strong, sustainable communities. Together, we can make that vision a reality. Grace and peace, Chris Manley Founder & Executive Director

PAGE 4 | REBUILD UPSTATERebuild Upstate built a ramp.Marlene gained freedom. MARLENE'S STORY Marlene is 75 years old and lives alone. She struggles to stand without support and uses a wheelchair to move. When Marlene needed to leave her home, someone had to carry her and her chair downstairs. She was unable to get out of her home by herself. Marlene lived in fear that if there was an emergency, like a fire, she would be trapped in her home. Not only was Marlene was concerned for her own her safety, she was concerned for the safety of others helping her get in and out of her home. She reached out to Rebuild Upstate for assistance making her home safer and more accessible.  Rebuild Upstate volunteers from contractor Brasfield & Gorrie spent a day building Marlene a wheelchair ramp. The ramp has had a profound impact on her quality of life. In her words, Marlene explains how. \"If I became seriously ill or injured, I could more easily be moved to a hospital. Also, it is no trouble now for others taking me out for lunch or a bit of entertainment anymore. I need some company with others and I need to get out again and experience life more fully. Now I can do so without feeling guilty that it is a hardship for those who come for me. In time, I may be able to go out in my yard again, which I have longed to do for a long time.\"

PAGE 5 | REBUILD UPSTATE Marlene is one of 160 homeowners served last year. Although each homeowner's story is different, one thing is the same.  Rebuild Upstate provides more than home repair. We provide hope.A Brasfield & Gorrie volunteer hard at work on the ramp. She wants others to know I CAN BE PART OFabout the good things Rebuild LIFE OUTSIDE AGAIN.Upstate does.  MARLENE, 2017 HOMEOWNER\"Rebuild Upstate does qualitywork for people like myself whoare handicapped, home-bound,who cannot do this work forthemselves and would beunable to pay others to do it.This goes beyond homeimprovement in the usualsense. It can help keep peopleout of nursing homes byproviding important safetymeasures like the ramp theybuilt for me. In my case, thishelps me have fellowship withothers who can easily comepick me up. I can be part of lifeoutside again. This is a comfortto their families and friendswho often live in grave concernfor those who are alone anddisabled.\"

These expenses are typically viewed as \"overhead.\"In actuality, it takes Rebuild Upstate an average of $4,000 to repair one home, all inclusive. Each staff member and resource is important to sustaining a healthy and vibrant organization.
