PASSWORD 11.22 [New Past] November’s Elle Decor deliberately starts off with an oxymoron. The aim is to narrate the ongoing relationship between two – only apparently opposed – temporal dimensions, yesterday and today. A theme we sense in all the cities of the world where the redevelopment of pre-existing urban infrastructure and the conversion of old buildings breathe new life into the old; transforming it into something new and current that creates value. However, the virtuous dialogue between a historical place and contemporary design also extends to the scale of the interiors. We see this in the newly conceived homes and workplaces presented in this issue: projects set in period spaces, which at the hand of architects and interior designers acquire identities deeply connected to the needs and the formal language of our times. Such examples are the palace in Naples’ historic centre, reconfigured by Giuliano dell’Uva with works of art and collectible design pieces; the Antwerp castle that the owners turned into a modern home; the Renaissance villa in Tuscany redesigned by Parisians Gilles & Boissier, mindfully linking history and contemporaneity. Arturo Galansino, director of Palazzo Strozzi, underscores this trend in an interview in the following pages. “Using the past as a starting point to say something important about the present, and not as a sterile showcase in which to drop contemporary pieces of art with a wow effect, is a necessary project”. A fundamental objective to experience the present while looking towards the future. 17 ELLE DECOR

As well as talks, prizes, conferences and exhibits in every corner of the city. This year Paris Photo, the most important international photography fair, has wanted to go big. The event is scheduled from 10 to 13 November inside the suggestive Grand Palais Ephémére, the pavilion designed by Jean- Michel Wilmotte. The fair will provide an overview of the history of photography from 1843 to the present day. A visual history divided into three chapters: Main, where the most institutional galleries are staged; Curiosa, devoted to emerging artists; and Book Sector, which combines the best of the specialised press. Among the events not to be missed: the Polaroids of painter Cy Twombly, displayed by Gagosian, and many works devoted to architecture. These include the exhibition entitled ‘Hantologie Suburbaine’ by Arash Hanaei, winner of the BMW Art Makers Award. The 44-year-old Iranian mixes metaverse and augmented reality. Inspired by Les Étoiles d’Ivry, the social housing project created in France by Jean Renaudie, it shines a light on the epic tale of utopian buildings designed in the 1970s, and reveals how the solution to our urban problems often hides only inside our dreams. — 21 ELLE DECOR

The race starts in the flagship store on the first floor, up to the 17th via a zigzag staircase and winding passages that connect the spaces internally. The project is a collaboration between the architectural firms Spillmann Echsle from Zurich and Specific Generic from Stockholm, with Vitra. “Everything flows and is constantly changing at On, which is why we wanted an office in this spirit, which could change and adapt”, says CEO David Allemann. The employees are grouped into ‘villages’ populated by about 250 people each and arranged across three of the building’s floors, equipped with showers, changing rooms and lockers, giving employees the chance to refresh after their sporting activities. The space is organised to facilitate movement, with open-plan offices lacking fixed workstations, enabling quick meetings along the stairs, thanks to small, purposely built functional areas (a library, a small museum...). Those who know her work will have immediately identified the author, the rest may discover her through ‘Cinzia Ruggeri: Cinzia Says...’, a monograph edited by Luca Lo Pinto and issued by Mousse Publishing, launched on the occasion of the exhibition at the Macro Museum in Rome, which this month opens at the Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art in London. The life of the eclectic creative, artist, fashion stylist and designer, who switched between these disciplines with extreme freedom and lightness, is recreated through archival materials, photographs and documents. Starting from her debut exhibition as a painter in 1960, accompanied by a text by Dino Buzzati, the book explores the fashion shows with the Bloom brand in the late 1970s, the collaborations with Studio Alchimia and Occhiomagico in the 1980s, her return to the Milanese arts scene following a sabbatical and ends with her death in 2019. The images are complemented by essays by Maria Luisa Frisa and Mariuccia Casadio, among others, and by a series of statements by friends who shared projects and creative visions with Cinzia Ruggeri. — 27 ELLE DECOR
