DISCOVERY 2 MODIFIED Vital; potentially life-saving Rare sight: Mark (left) shows BLAST FROM THE PAST an interest in a Land Rover Huge, wood-lined steel box engine made after 1957 On 27 November 1944, RAF Fauld, carries blasting material – the gypsum mine’s near neighbour in and weighs 750kg when full Mine safety: electrical isolator switch and amber beacon Staffordshire, experienced the biggest- ever non-nuclear explosion – with devastating consequences. The government had bought the huge network of disused mine tunnels to store bombs and ammunition, and to carry out repairs on faulty devices. The facility, named RAF Fauld, could accommodate a massive 40,000 tons of ordnance. On that fateful November day in the latter stages of the second world war, between 3500 and 4000 tons of ammunition was accidentally blown up when a site worker was attempting to remove a detonator from a live bomb with a brass chisel instead of a wooden batten. The resulting hole, 100 feet deep and an enormous 250 yards wide, is known as the Hanbury Crater and is still very much in evidence – a poignant reminder of the tragedy. The blast caused many fatalities – the exact number was never known but is believed to be about 70 – and destroyed the old plasterboard factory. A farm on the surface was also obliterated, killing everyone there and all the livestock. Many people drowned when a reservoir burst, flooding the mine and plasterworks. It’s safe to walk around the perimeter of the crater but the crater itself is strictly off limits – signs warn of unexploded bombs that still lurk there. LRO 11

SXHXOXXWXXXRXXEX PORT OFF-ROAD Vince Cobley and his team created a fantastic route at the Tixover off-road site – and a real array of vehicles took to the mud, from Series Land Rovers to Defender L663s, Range Rover Classics to L405s and Sports. Light rainfall on Saturday night made the terrain more challenging. ‘Thank you for the tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. Many were moved to tears.’ @iceberg_disco (Instagram) TRIBUTE The sad news of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s passing overshadowed the show a little. We altered the arena timetable to include a tribute to her on both days, and everyone in the stands said it was incredibly moving. The Land Rovers paraded behind a huge Union Flag carried by Bev Jennings and Jane McDonald – and the Land Rovers were lined up in the arena to form a huge ER – captured by a few people who had permits to fly drones. 20 LRO

Thousands of deals were done, and there will be many Land Rovers having the new kit added in the next few weeks. LRO 21
