groundbreaker jordan’s The Middle Eastern kingdom gets ready for its close-up, with Foster + new arrival Partners’ fantastic new terminal at Queen Alia airport in Amman BY rodolphe el-khourY PHoTo BY Lorem iPSum DoLore 40 june 2013 azuremagazine.com

→ The undersides of the airport’s 127 concrete vaults are embossed with a veined leaf motif, and gaps between the bays usher light into the interior. ↓ Designed to resemble a Bedouin tent when viewed from above, the canopy is topped in heat-reflective metal that enhances climate control. Air trAvel mAy hAve lost some of its cAchet, but international airports are still designed as iconic gateways that represent national identity and status. While the Water Cube and the Bird’s nest may have captured media attention during the 2008 Olympics, Foster + Partners’ more ambitious Beijing International Airport has proved to best define the new China. The British firm scores again in Amman, with Queen Alia International Airport. The $800‑ million terminal doubles the capacity of jordan’s largest air‑ port, positioning it as a regional hub, with flights to and from major north American and european cities. This is also the latest in the firm’s large and ever‑expanding global portfolio of airports, which consistently achieve an impressive balance between local character and worldly sophistication, solemn monumentality and pragmatic efficiency. Designed for incremental expansion – 12 million passengers a year by 2033 – the 103,000‑square‑metre building is modular: 127 pendentive vaults clustered into a central hall, with restaurants, lounges and shops, and two piers for departure gates. The clustered vaults reprise a pattern commonly found in Islamic architecture: an open‑ended field made up of a series of structural bays. This spatial ordering is exemplified in Spain’s Mosque‑ Cathedral of Córdoba, where it sharply contrasts with the closed and delineated figure of the Christian cathedral that predates it. Much like how the mosque accommodates the accidental cathedral within the matrix of arches and columns, the vaulted superstructure at Queen Alia airport enables things to get a little messy on the ground – so long as clarity dominates above. But Foster + Partners has taken this traditional canopy further, project‑ ing the pendentive vault (a regional invention developed in the fifth and sixth centuries) into the 21st century. After the experiments with concrete domes pioneered by Luigi nervi and Félix Candela in the ’60s, Foster realigns the structure with an environmental agenda. The concrete vaults’ thermal mass passively regulates the airport’s sustainable microclimate, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night – a capacity suited to Amman’s desert climate, where temperatures vary dramatically. By concentrating the loads on the support points, the archi‑ tects managed to create wide, teardrop‑shaped gaps between the bays. This enables generous daylighting, enhanced and bounced back by reflecting pools that illuminate the space. In addition, the canopy extends beyond the building to protect the exterior circulation routes from direct sunlight. Furthermore, the glazed curtain wall is equipped with anti‑glare louvres, which enables visitors to enjoy the brightness of the hall and the uninterrupted views beyond without PHOTO BY LOReM IPSuM DOLORe vaults resemble a Bedouin tent – or a many‑eyed insect – when viewed aerially. taxing the building’s electrical capacity. Topped in heat‑reflective metal, the The most sustainable aspect of Queen Alia airport may be how it is designed to weather with minimal maintenance. While lighter, thinner and more high‑tech building systems will age ungracefully in jordan’s des ert, the ponderous vaults will evoke a monumental antique ruin repurposed for modern use. june 2013 41

focus little A printer that fits in your hand is just one product in a new wave of tiny technology mini me that’s hitting the market – big time BY Brendan cormier matt webb, ceo and co-founder of the London design studio Berg, once asked, “What happens when stuff is conceived of as participants in our own creative, social, connected lives?” after years of strenuous prototyping, Webb seems to have arrived at an answer with a plug-in printer that turns your social media and favourite sites into something you can touch, hold, even feel emotional about. Launched last year, Little Printer is indeed compact. With a frame less than 13 centi metres long, it sits on two orange elbows and is ready to print off “mini-newspapers” via your smart phone. on a receipt-sized strip of thermal paper, you can print top news headlines, a list of books, or daily crosswords, though the most alluring aspect of Little Printer might be its anthropo morphic cuteness. a faceplate holds the paper roll in place, and an image of a happy face (or one of your choosing) appears at the beginning of each wee printout, and smiles back at you when not in use. $262; next shipment begins in july. bergcloud.com/littleprinter cubeSensors The Vamp Google Glass Square register by cBSr by Paul cocksedge by Google by Square inc. crammed with sensors that monitor Kickstarter is a natural breeding already controversial before its Developed by Twitter creator jack humidity, air quality, light, tempera- ground for newfangled micro- anticipated public release later this Dorsey, Square register makes ture and noise levels, cubeSensors technology, and it’s where London, year, google glass will either be the credit card payments fluid and relay that data to your mobile device u.K., designer Paul cocksedge next big thing or a niche product mobile. style beauty Inspired by the skills of its Afghan weavers, Arzu develops stunning underfoot rugs designed by star architects BY ElizaBEth Pagliacolo ← Simeon i, designed by Margaret Mccurry (far left); abrahamic tribal ii rug by Stanley tigerman (bottom left); zh runner, also in red, by zaha hadid (left). → arzu’s afghan weavers use loom skills passed down through generations. If arzu’s bold new collectIon is any indication, the american company will soon be a household name, and it deserves to be. Founded by former goldman Sachs exec connie Duckworth after a trip to war-torn afghanistan in 2003, it employs local women to hand-weave designer carpets for an inter national market. The result: a new cottage industry of high-end floor coverings, in patterns from modern to tribal, produced with loom and knotting skills passed down through generations. The weavers have grown in number from 30 to 700 since the not-for-profit started up, and all enjoy better-than-average working conditions: they set up their looms in their own homes, earn livable wages and have access to health care and clean water. in its latest project, arzu has commissioned architects Frank gehry, zaha Hadid and michael graves, among others, to design 10 limited edition wool carpets, signed and shipped with proof of authenticity. To reach a broader audience, the rugs are sold through coalesse, a Steelcase company, at prices from $3,500 to $14,000. You can own a four-metre-long runner emblazoned with an architectural sketch by Hadid, or a 1.8-by-3.6- metre carpet with a puzzle piece motif by gehry. if you want a style more faithful to eastern rugs, margaret mccurry and Stanley Tigerman, partners in life and as principals at their chicago firm, have come up with a sober pair of designs with more tradi- tional geometric patterns. While the series’ name, the masters collection, could refer to the architects, it could also acknowledge the weavers, masters at their trade though anonymous in their art. arzustudiohope.org Frozen poetry Glass vessels that ← ← a tumbler and a bring a modern flair to the frost carafe from Front’s Frost collection for Stelton. ↙For hay, Scholten & in the wrong hands, frosted glassware can veer into tacky territory, but two new collections transform it into the Baijings added pale colour to its glassware sublime. inspired by the wintry coating that forms on a window, the series designed by Stockholm studio Front for collection.
