Letter from the Editor Hi, my name is Alyssa Ramstetter and I am the creator of Chaos Magazine. I’ve always loved creating thingsand working with art and design, so for my senior project, I knew I had to do something artistic. When trying todecide what to do for my project, I thought about my interests, and realized a magazine would incorporate nearlyall of them. I love design, photography, art, writing, marketing, and fashion. Not only would a magazine allow meto do all these things that I like so much, but it would also help me decide what I really wanted to do as I move ontocollege. I began the project by deciding who I wanted my audience to be. It was a challenge, to say the least, to fi-nally decide who I wanted to appeal to. I constantly kept telling myself that I didn’t want it to be cliche, I wanted itto be artistic, and I didn’t want it to look like a book of Buzzfeed posts. I originally was really set on creating a highfashion magazine, but when I really started thinking about what girls my age wanted to read, I pushed myself towrite things that are more relatable and that would be beneficial to read. This soon led into me beginning the journey- writing, taking pictures, designing, illustrating, and research-ing. The writing sometimes came easily, and sometimes it was hard for me to even get a few sentences down. Re-searching helped a lot, and I found inspiration in other things. The design was a never ending process- one thatreally tested my over the top level of perfectionism. I’ve never really done any design work like this before, and itwas a continual challenge. An even bigger challenge was photography. I know I’m not bad at photography, but Iconstantly would be looking for, again, that perfection, and would be let down by my own work. This is when thecollaboration began. I asked 3 different photographers I know, Emma Beiles, Willow Greene, and Cole Morgan,to contribute. This could have not worked better. Their amazing work has given the magazine a whole new light ofbeauty and harmony, which I am so, so, so grateful for. Creating Chaos has been an adventure. A chaotic adventure (if you were wondering about the name). Anadventure that took a lot more planning and work than I expected, but an adventure that taught me a lot aboutdesign and working through difficult tasks. Working one page at a time to complete an entire magazine took a longtime, and at times, was very overwhelming. But, I’m glad to say that through all of it, I’ve really enjoyed myself. Thisproject has taught me so much about collaboration with others and pushing myself to move past my perfectionismto get things done. It taught me about myself and where my true interests lie, and what I still need to learn. I attimes wished I would have picked a simpler project, one that wouldn’t have taken over 230 hours to complete, butlooking back now, I wouldn’t have wanted to do anything else. Sincerely,

Seniors:If you could go back in time, what advicewould you give to yourself as a freshman?“Figure out who truly cares about you and spend your time with them. True friends will always be there for you. A true friend would never hurt you on purpose.” “Don’t worry what other people think about you.” “Don’t blink.” “Meet and get to know as many of your classmates as you can.” “It may take awhile but you will eventually find your people.” “Every day is a second chance.” “Don’t stress over the boys you’ve dated so far, you’ll meet the great one in the summer.” “Senioritis is real so get everything done now.” “Be yourself.” “Get as involved as possible!” “Study hard and take the time to enjoy the high school experience.” “Don’t take as many hard classes” “Don’t be so hard on yourself because honestly none of it even matters.” “Read and write as much as possible (including assigned reading). You have no idea how much magic will come from it” “Don’t get so caught up in boys” “Be nice to everyone and go out of your comfort zone” “Time management!!!!”

“If you want to do something, do it. Don’t avoid it simply because it puts you out of your comfort zone.” “Make better choices” “You don’t have to need a best friend” “Make friendships with everyone as soon as possible”“Your happiness comes first. Don’t let school stress you out to the point where you are unhappy with your life.” “Stay true to yourself and don’t let others get in the way of your goals in life”“Don’t worry if yifouyoduodno’tnl’itk, eity’soujursthihgihghscshcohooloflr. iYeonud’sl.l Yporoubwabilllyfinnedvenrewseeontehsemaloanfgtetrhgerwadauy.aBtieotnte.”rones. I promise.”“There’s no point sticking around people who aren’t making you a better version of yourself.” “Challenge yourself”

Advice to myself as a freshman Be a freshman. Stop getting so caught up in wanting to be older and getting your braces off and becoming a cool high schooler: there is no reason for it. Slow down and enjoy being a freshman with such little responsibility and stress. Enjoy being able to still get picked up by your mom because it’s good to spend time with her. Stop running around and pre- tending you hate pop music, which you actually love. Stop wasting time worrying about what people think. Don’t worry about not going to parties now, because you’ve got years to do that. Don’t wish for col- lege yet, because right now you haven’t even experienced high school. Stop wishing so deeply for the future and really enjoy the present. Please know that everything will change and you will grow so significantly as a person. You may not think it now, but you will grow so strongly in your character and thought. You have no idea what is coming, which is the best part. But please, remember that you are just a freshman. You have so much time. PS: be nicer to people PPS: stop wearing zebra print

MUSIC:MY FAvorite artists & Why

Nicki MinajNotorious for revealing clothing and explicit dance moves,Nicki Minaj is a rapper who has made a huge mark in both theHip Hop and Pop genres. Through her music, style, and at-titude, Minaj has made a name for herself in a primarily maledominated industry, which she continually points out. “I don’tsee myself as a female rapper anymore. I am a rapper.”Constantly addressing the issue of sexism in the music indus-try, she is the most successful female rapper of all time, andcontinually outsells countless popular male rappers. Achiev-ing record after record in a category that was little known afew years ago, she managed to become the most powerfulwoman of current Hip Hop. However the rapper struggles toget recognition for what she has accomplished besides music.Yes, Nicki Minaj is not just a successful rapper, she is also anaccomplished feminist, which a lot of people tend to deny orignore. Her music videos, such as Anaconda, make her theposter child for the hypersexualization of women in today’smusic. But her sexual expression is something that proves herability to express herself even through stereotypes. Overcom-ing stereotypes and sexism is a huge part of Nicki Minaj’s ca-reer and style. She also displays a constant outreach to younggirls and begs them to take the opportunities that she never got to experience, especially to attend college.Nicki Minaj a talented rapper with a gift for comic accents andunexpected turns in phrase, but her talent doesn’t stop there. She is a versatile artist, with a strong singing voice which is evident in her newest album, The PinkPrint.Nicki Minaj is a huge inspiration to me, and although seenas a bad influence, I can see the good influence she has asa strong woman who stands up for what she believes in and displays it in and outside of her music.

the weekndThe Weeknd has been one of my favorite artists for an incred-ibly long time. Abel Tesfaye, or The Weeknd, first released hisfirst mixtape, House of Balloons, anonymously on Youtube in2010. His anonymousness created a level of mystery to themusic, one that was highlighted by the echoing tones of hismusic and the complexity of his vocals. “House of Balloonswas special because I had no deadlines and nobody knew meso there were no expectations,” he said in response to a fanon Twitter. “I spent a year making it perfect. Every song hadat least 7 Different versions to them before picking the rightone.” Tesfaye still lives up to the mystery of his character “TheWeeknd”. He has never given a formal interview. He claimsthe mystery is “because I grew up idolizing story tellers whotell stories using symbolism, so it was in my nature to do the same.”Tesfaye revealed that his music has been inspired by his lifein Canada. Although he is a Canadian native, his family hailsfrom Ethiopia, and that ancestry has been a strong force in hislife.” Ahmaric was the first language I learned,” said Tesfaye. He moved to Canada with his mother, who he credited as one of his inspirations. The Weeknd has made such a huge impact on the R&B andelectronic genres by not conforming to the quickly identifi-able sounds found in already existing music. This past year,he won Juno Awards in the categories of Breakthrough Artistof the Year and R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. His music, which could be described as a shadowy and alternative R&B,has set the pace for a new wave of R&B. His style has beencontinuously growing and evolving into a new sound that has never been heard before.“I feel like I’m changing the industry more than its chang- ing me.
