IMC406: LIBRARY SKILL – ONLINE DATABASE (PTAR Portal) ABSTRACTS This assignment in its present form is the step of searching in library online database. There are many online databases that available in PTAR portal. But we have chosen two online database and it is shown every step of searching the database. The online databases that we choose is Scopus and Emerald Insight as subject to this assignment and explained more about both of database. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT In performing this assignment, my partner and I take guideline from respected person who deserve our greatest gratitude. The completion of this assignment gives us much pleasure. We would like to show gratitude to Mr. Mohd Zaihan Bin Hussin, IMC 406 – Library Skills course Lecture, University Teknologi MARA (UiTM) for giving us a good guideline for this assignment throughout numerous consultations. We also like to expend our deepest gratitude to all those who have directly and indirectly guided us in writing this assignment. Many people especially my classmates have made valuable comment suggestions on this proposal which gave me an inspiration to improve this assignment and help directly or indirectly to the completion of this assignment. OBJECTIVE Objective of this assignment is prepared to enhance and to understand of level the Online Database. It’s about learn the correct step in the quest notice something in the database. In this assignment, it should be stated how to find the article and as a proof of the articles needs to be attached together. For this assignment, we have choose two different online database which is Scopus and Emerald Insight. At the end of this assignment we would like to choose Emerald Insight to search an information. SEARCHING METHOD To completed this assignment, we have been requested by our Lecturer to use the searching method to search article in Online Database. Finding the right article and other materials is not happenstance. Therefore, some of the databases work differently than others. The following searching techniques will work in most databases. To use any database effectively, we used three searching method to find the Page 2

IMC406: LIBRARY SKILL – ONLINE DATABASE (PTAR Portal) article as below. For any online database there are two parts: the data set and the interface for accessing the data. Different commercial vendors make data sets available and create an interface or search engine for accessing the data. Some vendors supply many different data sets via the same interface while some interfaces are unique to a given data set. The following searching techniques will work in most databases. To use any database effectively, we used three searching method to find the article as below. i. Boolean Searching ii. Wildcard Searching iv.Truncation Searching Page 3

IMC406: LIBRARY SKILL – ONLINE DATABASE (PTAR Portal) INTRODUCTION BOOLEAN SEARCHING Boolean search is a type of search allowing users to combine keywords with operators (or modifiers) such as AND, NOT and OR to further produce more relevant results. For example, a Boolean search could be \"exercise\" AND \"health\". This would limit the search results to only those documents containing the two keywords. Example Boolean Search Terms i. “AND” Logic Using AND narrows a search by combining terms. The more words you enter connected by AND the fewer documents you get. All your words will be searched on. The AND operator is generally used to join different kinds of concepts, different aspects of the question. AND - cat AND dog Cat Cat Dog AND Dog Example: “Cat” AND “Dog” Page 4

IMC406: LIBRARY SKILL – ONLINE DATABASE (PTAR Portal) ii. “OR” Logic Using OR broadens a search to include results that contain either of the words you're looking for. The OR operator is generally used to join similar, equivalent, or synonymous concepts. OR - PUPPY “OR” KITTEN Puppy OR Kitten Puppy Puppy Kitten OR Kitten Example: Puppy “OR” Kitten Page 5

IMC406: LIBRARY SKILL – ONLINE DATABASE (PTAR Portal) iii. “NOT” Logic Using NOT is exclude words from your search. Narrow your search, telling the database to ignore concepts that may be implied by your search terms. NOT - black NOT white Black NOT White Black White Example: Black “NOT” White Page 6

IMC406: LIBRARY SKILL – ONLINE DATABASE (PTAR Portal) INTRODUCTION WILDCARD SEARCHING Alternatively referred to as a wild character or wildcard character, a wildcard is a symbol used to replace or represent one or more characters. Wildcards are typically either an asterisk (*), which represents one or more characters or question mark (?), which represents a single character. In the examples below of how a wildcard may be used, realize that wildcards are relatively universal. Wildcard Basics i. Percent ( % ) in a wildcard The percent symbol is used in SQL to match any character (including an underscore) zero or more times. ii. Asterisk ( * ) in a wildcard The asterisk in a wildcard matches any character zero or more times. For example, \"comp*\" matches anything beginning with \"comp\" which means \"comp\", \"complete\", and \"computer\" are all matched. iii. Question mark ( ? ) in a wildcard A question mark matches a single character once. For example, \"c?mp\" matches \"camp\" and \"comp\". The question mark can also be used more than once. For example, \"c??p\" would match both of the above examples as well as \"coop\". In MS-DOS and the Windows command line the question mark also can match any trailing question marks zero or one times. For example, \"co??\" would match all of the above matches, but because they are trailing question marks would also match \"cop\" even though it’s not four characters. iv. Open and close brackets ([ ] ) in a wildcard With Unix shells, Windows PowerShell, and programming languages that support regular expressions the open and close bracket wildcards match a single character in a range. For example, [a-z] matches any character \"a\" through \"z\", which means anything not in that range like a number would not be matched. Page 7

IMC406: LIBRARY SKILL – ONLINE DATABASE (PTAR Portal) INTRODUCTION TRUNCATION SEARCHING This search technique refers to the ability to search just a portion of a word. Truncation is a searching technique used in databases in which a word ending is replaced by a symbol. Frequently used truncation symbols include the asterisk (*), a question mark (?) or a dollar sign ($). Different databases use different truncation symbols so it is important to check the database 'Help' information or 'Search Tips' for details about which symbol to use. Truncation enables different forms of a word to searched for simultaneously, and will increase the number of search results found. For example: If the truncation symbol is *, then the truncated word,  child*, will search for results containing child, childs, children, childrens, childhood. Page 8

IMC406: LIBRARY SKILL – ONLINE DATABASE (PTAR Portal) INTRODUCTION ONLINE DATABASE An online database is a database accessible from a local network or the Internet, as opposed to one that is stored locally on an individual computer or its attached storage (such as a CD). Online databases are hosted on websites, made available as software as a service products accessible via a web browser. They may be free or require payment, such as by a monthly subscription. Some have enhanced features such as collaborative editing and email notification. This is an electronic resource providing online information such as article reviews, research papers, journals, conference papers, proceedings, case files and others. This information is available in the form of either full texts or abstracts depending on the type of subscription by the Library. A database search will generally yield an abstract, a short summary of an article, which will help us to make decision whether we should get the full or the complete text or not. So, we use PTAR Library in web www.uitm.edu.my to choose two online database which is 1. Scopus 2. Emerald Insight As we can see below is front page for PERPUSTAKAAN TUN ABDUL RAZAK UiTM Library (PTAR Library). We can reach the website throughout this link http://ptar.library.uitm.edu.my . Click on online database Figure 1 shows the front page for PERPUSTAKAAN TUN ABDUL RAZAK UiTM Library (PTAR Library). Page 9

IMC406: LIBRARY SKILL – ONLINE DATABASE (PTAR Portal) INTRODUCTION TO SCOPUS Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature: scientific journals, books and conference proceedings. Scopus offers easy access to a vast universe of information – but it does so much more than that. Scopus not only connects you to the literature, it also helps you search it, analyze it, evaluate it and integrate it into your workflow. Advance your Science with Scopus. When searching for insights, efficiency is a priority. Being able to search a single, trustworthy and authoritative database saves valuable time that would otherwise be spent cross-checking multiple databases and having to confirm results.Since Scopus delivers the broadest overview of global, interdisciplinary scientific data and literature, across all research fields, researchers know that the odds of missing key research information are greatly reduced. In Scopus, to search the information we use Search Basic using Wildcard and Truncation Method. In Advanced Search we using Boolean Method. i. Basic Search Step to get the information through Basic Search. Below attach is front page for Basic Search when we using Scopus. In search column, you can directly type the article/topics you want to search. In search box, simply type the article to start the search. Figure 2 shows the front page for Basic Search using Scopus. IMC406: LIBRARY SKILL – ONLINE DATABASE (PTAR Portal) INTRODUCTION EMERALD INSIGHT The Emerald database is a distributed, object-oriented database system in-tegrated seamlessly with the Emerald system. It has an associative query language that can exploit indexes on paths of functions (method index-ing) (objects are encapsulated) and avoids impedance mismatch with the application-language. Significant effort has been put into producing a seamless integration of the database system into the existing Emerald language: database operations are legal wherever Emerald statements are legal, all Emerald objects can be used in queries, set-expressions in queries are first-class objects, the strong typing of the Emerald type system also covers the query language (i.e., application programs and their queries are type-checked at compile-time), the scoping rules of Emerald are extended to also cover the query language. It is possible to have queries (and other database operations) inside object literals in expressions in queries. There is two ways to used Emerald Online Database, first is Basic Search and second is Advance Search. i. Basic Search Step to get information through Basic Search and below attach is front page for Basic Search and we can see have a few main topics under Browse Journals and Books.
