1 Greatest revolutionary act against black money: Demonetization Demonetization History: The Indian rupee is the official currency of the republic India. The issuance of the currency is controlled by India. The rupee is named after the silver coin, rupiya, first issued by Sultan Sher Shah Suri in the 16 century and later continued by the Mughal Empire. t h The pre-Independence British series-The paper currency act of 1861gave the British government the monopoly to issue notes in India. Small denomination notes- Paper currency of small denominations was started due to the First World War, with Rs.1 introduced on 30 November 1917. King’s portrait series- This series carried the portrait of George v and was started in May 1923 with Rs.10, Rs.50, Rs.100, Rs.500, Rs.1000, and Rs.10000. This continued till 1935 when reserve bank of India was set up. 12 Aug 1946- Rs.500, 1000, 10000 notes were demonetised to control black money 1954- High denomination notes of Rs.1000 5000 10000 reintroduced. 16 Jan 1978- Denominations higher than Rs.100 demonetised again to control the black money. 1995- Rs.1 and Rs.2 notes were removed from circulation 2011- 25 paisa and all paisa coins below this denomination were withdrawn. So, In a major step to check undeclared black money and demolish it; the breakthrough act done by our prime Minister was announcement of ‘demonetization’ that had shocked the entire country and south Asian country’s economy on 8 November. The news were in an effort to th combat corruption, tax evasion and counterfeiting, all 500 and 1,000 rupee banknotes are no longer recognized as legal tender. Inevitably, low-income and rural households have been hardest hit by Modi’s currency reform. Barter economies have reportedly sprung up in many towns and villages. Banks have limited the amount that can be withdrawn. Indian stocks plunged below their 200-day moving average. Demonetization has also weighed heavily on the country’s manufacturing sector. The Nikkei India Manufacturing PMI fell to 52.3 in November from October’s 54.4. Although still in Consilience, Vol.1, Number3, Jan.3, 2017

2 expansion mode, manufacturing production growth slowed, possibly signaling further erosion in the coming months. Even though electronic payment systems are convenient, fast and easy, but the only problem is (actually not), your economic liberty is debased. In a Purely electronic system, every financial transaction is tracked and monitored. And as; India’s economy relies predominantly on cash, the effects will be far greater. ATMs are scarce, and few rural Indians have a credit or debit card. An estimated 600 million Indians— nearly half the country’s population—are without a bank account. Three hundred million have no government identification, necessary to open an account. By comparison, about 7 percent of Americans are unbanked, with an additional 20 percent under banked, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). This is one of the main reasons why Indians have traditionally held gold in such high demand. Many have little faith in banks and other financial institutions, preferring instead to store their wealth in something more reliable and tangible. So great is Indians’ appetite for the yellow metal that prices have historically surged in September, following the end of the monsoon season and ahead of Diwali and the wedding season, when gifts of gold jewelry are typically given. “Gold is a need of the [Indian] people,” says Suresh Jain, owner of India’s B.J. Jain Jewelers, as quoted in the Financial Times. “It is not a luxury item. It is essential.” Ironically, though, Modi’s demonetization scheme will likely hurt gold demand in the long run, “by dramatically reducing the stock of black money hitherto used in a large chunk of purchases,” according to the Financial Times. A new redesigned series of Rs. 500 banknote, in addition to a new denomination of Rs.2000 th banknote is in circulation since 10 November 2016. The new redesigned series is also expected to be introduced to the banknote denominations of Rs. 1000, Rs. 100 and Rs. 50 in coming months. Gautam Kumbhani (M.Sc. B.T. prev.) 3 A IDS- Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome is a disease of the human immune system caused by infection with human immune deficiency virus (HIV). AIDS has killed more than 30 million people worldwide, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in record history. The earliest well documented case of HIV in a human dates back in 1959 in the Congo. The virus may have been present in the United States as early as 1966 but the vast majority of infection occurring outside sub-Saharan Africa can be traced back to single unknown individual who became infected with HIV in Haiti and then brought the infection to the United States times around 1969. The epidemic then rapidly spread among high risk groups. + HIV is a retro virus that primarily infect components of the human immune system such as CD4 T + Cells, macrophages and dendtric cells, it directly or indirectly destroy CD4 T cells. HIV is a member of the genus Lentivirus part of the family RETROVIRUADE. Lentiviruses are transmitted as single stranded, positive sense, enveloped virus. Upon entry into target cells, the viral RNA is converted into double stranded DNA by virally encoded reverse transcriptase that is transported along with viral genome in the virus particle. The resulting viral DNA is then imported into cell nucleus and integrated into cellular DNA by a virally encoded dintegrase and host co- factor once integrated, the virus may become Latent, allowing the virus and its host cell to avoid detection by the immune system. Alternatively, the virus may be transcribed producing new RNA genome and viral proteins that are packaged and released from the cell as new virus particle that begin the new cell of replication. After the virus enter the body there is a period of rapid viral replication, leading to an abundance of virus in the peripheral blood , during primary infection, the level of HIV may reach several million virus particle per million per blood. This response is accompanied by a marked drop in the number of circulating CD4 T cells. The CD8 cells response is thought to be important in controlling virus + + + + particle levels, which peaks and then recover as CD4 T cells count recover, a good CD8 T cells response has been linked to slower progression and better prognosis through it does not eliminate + the virus. Ultimately HIV causes AIDS by depleting CD4 T cells, this weakens the immune system and allows opportunistic infections. T cells are most important element of the immune system response as without them, the body cannot fight infections or kill cancerous cells. The initial period following contraction of HIV is called acute HIV. Symptoms occur in 40-90% cases and most commonly include fever, large lymph node a rash, headache, and /or sores of the mouth and genitals. The duration of symptoms is usually one or two weeks. During the initial period of infection a person may experience an influenza like illness. This is typically followed by a prolong period without symptoms. As the illness progresses, it interferes like more and more with immune system, making the person much more to likely get infection including opportunistic infections and tumor that does not usually affect. Consilience, Vol1, Number 3, Jan. 3, 2017

The most frequent mode of transmission of HIV is usually through sexual contact with the infected 4 person. The second most frequent mode of transmission is via blood and blood products. However the pattern of transmission varies significantly among countries. Blood borne can be through needle sharing during intravenous drug use, needle stick injury, transfusion of contaminate blood or blood product or medical injections with unsterilized equipment. HIV is transmitted in about 93% of blood transfusing involving infected blood. HIV can be transmitted from mother to child during delivery or through breast milk, pregnancy. This is the third most common way in which HIV is transmitted globally. In the absence of treatment, the risk of transmission before or during the birth is around 20% to those who breast feed; 35% with appropriate treatment the risk of mother to child infection can be reduced to about 1%. A number of antiretroviral administered with 48 to 72 hours after exposure to HIV positive blood or genital secretion is referred to as a post exposure prophylaxis. The use of single agent zidovudine reduces the risk of a HIV infection fivefold followed by a needle stick injury. There is currently no cure of effective HIV vaccine. Treatment consists of High Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) which slows the progression of the disease and as more than 6.6 million people were taking them in low and middle countries, benefits of treatment include a decreased risk of progression to AIDS and a decreased risk of death. In the developing world treatment also improves physical and mental health. Additional benefits include a decrease risk of transmission to sexual partners and a decrease in mother to child transmission. THE ORGANISATION ALSO URGED ALL NATIONS TO JOIN HANDS AND FIGHT TO END IT BY 2030. st Every year world AIDS day is observed on 1 December to dedicate raising awareness of the AIDS. Fact: A hug transfer positive Vibrations- It is true that a hug helps to transfer positive vibrations- it makes us more loving and caring, something all humans look for, but we Indians are very shy of showing such emotions. A hug can make the other person feel loved and cherished. So why hesitate- go ahead and hug your dear ones. Himani Patel (M.Sc. Micro Prev.) Consilience, Vol1, Number 3, Jan. 3, 2017

7 BERRY-MERRY CHRISTMAS Christmas is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Jesus Christ all over the world th on 25 December every year. Christ, as mentioned in the holy bible, is the messiah which means ‘saviour’. He is also referred as Emanuel means ‘god with us’. This clearly indicates that god being so kind to human race that “he gave us his only son so that who so ever believes in his should not perish but have everlasting life.” (The bible) Lord Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem city, more than two thousand years ago. His mother merry was a pious lady. Father, Joseph was a righteous man. Christ showed exceptional religious from his childhood. He was found in the temple of discussing the deep religious philosophy with the high priests. He went to the wilderness, observed for 40 days and when he returned to Jerusalem, he was filled with the holy spirit of god. He preached the gospel of god and he treated the sick, disabled and the oppressed people. He did miracles that the lame walked, the blind could see and the dead rose to life…!! He told his disciples that the powerful people will not like his preaching and they will prosecute him but they will all see him rising back to glory of god..! He was crucified by the religious leaders of those days on Good Friday but he rose back to life after 3 days on Easter. He has promised his disciples that he would come back to judge all people according to their faith and deeds, with all his glory. Really, Christmas brings us a great tiding of joy and everlasting life for all! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU...!! Shraddha Prabhakar (M.Sc. Micro. Prev.) 8 Four new elements get a seat in a periodic table The periodic table of the elements arranges all of the known elements in an informative array. To this the new elements have been added and the discoverers were been invited to propose names and the following are now disclosed for public review: • Nihonium and symbol Nh, for the element 113, • Moscovium and symbol Mc, for the element 115, • Tennessine and symbol Ts, for the element 117, and • Oganesson and symbol Og, for the element 118. The guidelines for the naming the elements were recently revised and shared with the discoverers to assist in their proposals. Keeping with tradition, newly discovered elements can be named after: (a) a mythological concept or character (including an astronomical object), (b) a mineral or similar substance, (c) a place, or geographical region, (d) a property of the element, or (e) a scientist. The names of all new elements in general would have an ending that reflects and maintains historical and chemical consistency. This would be in general “-ium” for elements belonging to groups 1-16, “-ine” for elements of group 17 and “- on” for elements of group 18. Finally, the names for new chemical elements in English should allow proper translation into other major languages. For the element with atomic number 113 the discoverers named it nihonium and the symbol Nh. Nihon is one of the two ways to say “Japan” in Japanese, and literally mean “the Land of Rising Sun”. The name is proposed to make a direct connection to the nation where the element was discovered. Element 113 is the first element to have been discovered in an Asian country. For the element with atomic number 115 the name proposed is moscovium with the symbol Mc and for element with atomic number 117, the name proposed is tennessine with the symbol Ts. These are in line with tradition honoring a place or geographical region Moscovium is in recognition of the Moscow region and honors the ancient Russian land that is the home for Nuclear Research. Tennessine is in recognition of the contribution of the Tennessee region. For the element with atomic number 118; proposed the name oganesson and symbol Og. The proposal is in line with the tradition of honoring a scientist and recognizes Professor Yuri Oganessian (born 1933) for his pioneering contributions to transactinoid elements research. His many achievements include the discovery of super heavy elements and significant advances in the nuclear physics of super heavy nuclei. Consilience, Vol.1, Number3, Jan.3, 2017

9 Yoshinori Ohsumi of Japan Wins Nobel Prize for Study of ‘Self- Eating’ Cells. Researcher's work provided the basis for understanding autophagy, or how cells degrade and recycle their molecular trash. જ્ઞાન પ્રાપ્ત કરવા શ ું The 2016 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi, 71, a cell biologist at the Tokyo Institute of Technology “for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy.” કરશો ? Autophagy is the process by which cells capture large dysfunctional proteins, aging organelles, and invading pathogens in vesicles and then send them to the I = Interest lysosome for degradation, said Juleen Zierath, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine in announcing the prize. N = Negotiation “Without autophagy, our cells won’t survive.” Dysfunction of the autophagy process is life-threatening from birth through old F = Finding age. For example, autophagy is disrupted in Alzheimer’s disease, when toxic O = Observation protein aggregates are not properly discarded. As a consequence, drug makers, have continued to eye R = Reading the pathway as M = Modern a therapeutic target. Although A = Analysis researchers had known since the T = Timely 1960s that cells cleaned up their large I = Inquisitiveness cellular garbage O = Open Minded by enclosing it in vesicle sacks and N = Noting sending it to the lysosome for degradation, in the 1990s, when Ohsumi began his work, nobody knew how the system worked, and what machinery was involved, Zierath said. Ohsumi first noticed that they could induce baker’s yeast cells to produce autophagy vesicles under low nutrient conditions. This observation gave scientists the first method for controlling and studying the process. Then, “in a heroic effort, Ohsumi studied mutant yeast under the light microscope, one cell at a time, to figure out which genes were involved”. Over the years Ohsumi continued to tease apart the mechanisms of autophagy and to show that similar machinery existed in more complicated organisms, including humans. Notably, he showed that the lysosome wasn’t just a waste dump, it was a recycling plant. In some cases, discarded components are actually broken down in the lysosome and reused to make new proteins. 10 OUR OWN ‘MOTHER’ mall blue eyed, a character of wrinkles, dynamic, strong and determined, ‘Mother Teresa’ was the very incarnation of mercy S and compassion. She was a moving image of good and godliness, ever full of hope, cheer, sunshine, gentle smile, prayers and benediction. This apostle of love, hope and mercy had been the mother in the truest sense of the term to millions and millions of destitute, deprived, ill and dying in India and abroad. A single frail and bent down woman, her body draped in a coarse white sari with a broad blue border reaching out to millions of homeless, poor, needy, destitute and diseased instantly reminded of Buddha and Christ. Mother Teresa was named Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu at her birth by her parents. She was born on 26th August, 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia. She was God-fearing and a religious lady and always found time for prayers, counting the rosary and visiting the church. This had a lasting impact on Agnes and decided the future course of her life. Her journey to Darjeeling proved a turning point in her life. It was really the most significant journey of her life. The day was September 10. 1946 and later it came to be recognized as “Inspiration Day.” She was 38 years of age when she took the strict vows of poverty, purity, obedience and selfless service. She was given permission by the Pope to leave the convent and begin her lifelong ministry, the year was 1948. Two years later, her order of the Missionaries of Charity was approved by the archdiocese of Kolkata. Mother saw the manifestation of God in every human being and felt she was serving the Lord when she served a leper, a destitute or a dying person. In them she saw Christ himself. She did not hesitate to serve even a faithless because of her own firm faith in humanity, God and his creation. She never tried to thrust her faith and belief on others. As a recognition to her matchless and long service she was showered honours upon honours including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, the most prestigious civilian award of India — Bharat Ratna in 1980. Universities felt proud in conferring on her honorary doctorate degrees. She was given the honour of honorary citizenship of several big and famous cities. In 1971 Pope Paul awarded her the first Pope John XXIII Peace Prize. Mother Teresa died on 5th September, 1997 and thus created a huge void. The passing away of this saint of the gutters at the age of 87 years plunged millions of people into untold sorrow and mourning and orphaned thousands of people. Physically she is no more with us, but her spirit of love, service, charity and compassion is always there to guide and help us all. In the recognition of her selfless services the Pope granted her Sainthood. Really, she became a role model of charity, compassion, holiness and selfless service. 17 Velavadar Blackbuck sanctuary: Amazing place to visit We had been driving to Bhavnagar for official work since years and often used to see the sign board of Velavadar blackbuck sanctuary on the way, via Dholera. I never imagined its beauty till I visited this place for the first time in the month of May this year. Since then I have visited this place four times. It is a paradise for Nature lovers, very nicely conserved by the forest department. Let me try to present the beauty of the place… The background: A golden yellow dry grass background is almost everywhere and it shines with a lustre in the evening setting sun, creating the background aura. Blackbuck, called as kadiyaar are the main subject for our visit. They are seen in this golden background in a glorious contrast, the males being black and white and the females golden yellow white. When they move in flocks it is a treat to watch and if you are lucky, you may see them in playing mode. Their leaps are breath - taking to watch. Bluebulls: Local name, Neelgaay. They are found grazing or watching you from a distance. Huge in size as they are the largest members of the antelope family, both males and females are invariable seen. Birds: The sanctuary is a place for large bird diversity, especially after the monsoon. In our recent trips we saw kunj crane, white storks, sandgrouse, francoline, various larks, stonechats, pipits and drongos in huge numbers. But more than any of these birds the delight to watch was the Harriers. We got lucky to watch them closely, their movements, flights and also preying on larks.

18 Sunset: Last but not the least, the sunsets at Velavadar. They are one of the most amazing you would ever see. It is the same Sun, but it makes you to doubt, maybe it is not the same! The feeling of thrill carries you as you slowly float out of the Velavadar reserve towards Bhavnagar-Dholera highway. Prof. Ujjaval Trivedi

7 WONDERS OF NATURE WHICH SCIENCE COULD NEVER PROVE!!! Ever since humans came into existence, they labelled their own curiosity with a word called “SCIENCE”. Now a time has come that we humans discard anything to be real, if it’s not proven by science. However, nature keeps proving that it came first & will always remain above human kind. Here are seven such natural wonders which defy science and proudly stand as a monument beyond human understanding... 1.) The Synchronous Fireflies: The lightning bulbs found mostly in eastern part of Northern America emit beautifully coloured lights during a specific time period. They’ve become a matter of interests for tourists & scientists alike. These little wonders blinking. How they do it still remains a mystery for science. 2.) Naga Fireballs: We all are aware about fireballs from sky, but have you ever imagined them rising from the sea??? Yes, you read that right!! In both Thailand & Laos, thousands of glowing red orbs rise from the famous Mekong River. These fireballs rise a few hundred metres up before disappearing in thin air! It’s a phenomenon that not only defies science but also our imagination. 3.) The Silent Zone: The desert area outside Durango, Mexico known as Mapimi. Silent Zone is known for its utter silence. This zone is known to have an ability to block all radio signals. It is also known to pull space science objects like Apollo boosters, test missiles, & meteorites. This zone keeps on shifting its boundary which makes it even more difficult for scientists to arrive at any conclusion. 4.) The Singing Whales: Humpback whales are more notably known for their ability to sing or create regular patterns of sound which are closely similar to human music. They don’t just sing but they even teach others to sing. It was considered as

7 WONDERS OF NATURE WHICH SCIENCE COULD NEVER PROVE!!! mating ritual, but was eventually debunked which makes the phenomenon yet again defy science. 5.) Bird’s Own GPS: Many species of birds migrate to & fro the same area every year. Like we humans, they don’t have any aid of compass or a map. Then a question arises as to how do they communicate? How exactly do they find where are they actually supposed to go? Researchers have tried their hearts out to find the answers but none could satisfy human curiosity satisfactorily. Do they have their own GPS system? Well, May be then!! 6.) The Krishna Butter Ball: Named after Lord Krishna’s butter love, this 250 tonne rock has been proudly standing in Mahabalipuram, India & has been defying gravity since then. It is a 20 feet high & 5 meter wide stone which glues itself to the ground defying all logic of balancing against gravity. The land on which it rests is not a pit or a flat ground either; it is instead a slippery slope of a hill. Science is very less likely to answer how a 250 tonne rock can rest on a less than a 4 feet base. Strange but true!! 7.) The Hum: The Hum or Hums is a phenomenon where in a humming sound is audible only to a few selected group of people. Statistically, only 2% of the world’s total population is among the ones who can hear a hum. Scientists have mostly ignored this mystery, but did not decline it. This Hum has simply outsmarted science as it has become more of a regular occurrence & that too in different parts of the world. (M.Sc. Biochem. Final)
