Cover Story Dream Destination for Youth, Growth Factory: JSP Roadmap for 2022 For Jindal Steel & Power (JSP), like other businesses and Corporates, the year 2021 was challenging, especially the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic. While the first wave of pandemic, which resulted in a national lockdown, saw a remarkable phase of innovation-led growth in JSP, and a consequent turnaround, the second wave in 2021 continued to witness innovations in the face of new challenges. When the country needed emergency supplies of Oxygen, JSP was among the first Corporates to send in urgent supplies of Liquid Medical Oxygen, throughout the country. Jindal | January 2022 | 21
In keeping with larger organisational goals, the JSP units logged impressive performances, with many of them setting records in terms of outputs or production numbers. To give a couple of examples: the Barbil unit had a record 743000 MT of pellet production in May 21, while the TRB Iron Ore mines ensured that it catered to plant requirements and domestic sales in spite of heavy, inconsistent monsoon rains. The year 2022 has come with a new set of challenges. A new variant of the Virus can cause huge uncertainties. But JSP and its units, across the country, are geared up for every possible challenge. While ensuring the wellbeing of its workforce, employees, and communities, JSP hopes to maintain the growth tempo it has built in the last two years. 22 | Jindal | January 2022
Among several ambitious organizational targets for the year, JSP hopes to be recognized as a Great Place to Work, and a Dream Destination for the nation’s young engineering graduates and other professionals. A slew of initiatives are already underway in various units in the organization towards this goal. In keeping with its national commitments, JSP will be a proud partner in strengthening the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Mission in the year 2022. There are several other priority areas for JSP in the New Year, both at the organisation’s level, and in individual units. For instance, JSP will further enhance security measures in plants for its workforce. To give an example, at JSP, Raipur, more safety measures at the workplace will be added and the workplace management system will be upgraded. The proposed expansion to make the Angul unit the largest integrated steel plant in the world is well-known. The plan will get further momentum in the New Year. Many other moves to support the idea will take shape. For instance, JSP Raipur is all geared up for massive requirements of EOT cranes for HSM, SMS & Pellet Plant and other various heavy and critical equipment. Jindal | January 2022 | 23
There are expansion plans for other units as well. Like at Patratu, expansion projects for both mills, WR & Bar Mill, to enhance overall production capacity as well as the product range, are planned. Production capacities will also be ramped up. Like for the Raigarh plant, production of 3.75 MTPA is proposed in the New Year, while the target for Ebitda is Rs 6000 crore. The Raigarh unit also plans to commission a new Tube & Structural Mill, and a new New Lime Plant, in addition to 1X400 TPD oxygen Plant (ASU). The Patratu unit has consciously decided to focus on operational excellence. It will also seek to reduce the conversion cost. The unit has developed a system to use gasification oil and coal tar as fuel in reheating furnace, considered to be cheaper options. The JSP mantra for the New Year, then, is: “Be the Best; Deliver World-Class Products; Grow Responsibly; Lead the India Growth Story”. Truly, the Year 2022 promises to be exciting, even if it is full of challenges. 24 | Jindal | January 2022
