Our Hon. PM Shri Narendra Modi too had stressed its importance. The coal gasification process will V R Sharma definitely help steel makers in making Managing Director an AatmaNirbhar Bharat. Promoting CGP will help us to grow in the right direction as it is beneficial for both the industry and nation at large. Cover Story Coal Gasification - A Path Breaking Technology Future of Coal India is blessed with a huge reserve of coal and about 80 percent of the coal produced within the country is used in thermal power plants. Inspite of the recent focus on renewable and other cleaner sources of energy, coal will continue to remain the leading source of energy in the foreseeable future. 10 | Jindal | May 2022
The reality of climate change and growing environmental concerns have necessitated that we review the way we use coal and think of sustainable and ‘greener’ ways to use conventional fuel. This concern has led to the discovery of a technology that has turned out to be the buzzword in the coal sector called Coal gasification. Coal can be converted into syngas by gasification-based coal conversion technology, for producing power, petrol, diesel and other petroleum products, which can reduce dependence on crude oil imports. Through directed policy initiatives and by incentivizing the technology through less overhead cost, ensuring availability of better quality of coal, it is possible to lead the commercial deployment of the technology. Coal gasification, if brought to scale, can accelerate India’s energy shift, reduce dependence on imports and go a long way in building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Jindal | May 2022 | 11
Our Founder Chairman Sh. OP Jindal had dreamt of coal gasification in the 90s which has been realized under the visionary leadership of Mr. Naveen Jindal at Angul Steel Complex of JSP in Odisha by operationalizing a CGP propelled DRI Plant, the world’s first of its kind for Steel Making. Our Chairman Mr. Naveen Jindal has observed that, “Coal Gasification is the future of Coal. If we want to use Coal in an environment-friendly manner then there is no better way than gasification. Coal Gasification uses the chemical energy of coal and offers the cleanest and most efficient means to produce sponge Iron and chemicals like methanol, ethanol, and blue hydrogen”. The technology helps to capture Carbon dioxide and also to make the environment clean & green. Normally, Steelmaking by Blast Furnace emits 1.85 tonnes of Carbon dioxide which can be reduced significantly by using coal gasification technology. Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi announced on 18 June 2020 that India would invest around Rs. 20,000 crore in four major projects for conversion of 100 Million Tonnes of coal into gas by the end of this decade. A National Coal Gasification Mission has been announced by the Govt. to achieve this target. MD of JSP Mr. VR Sharma has called it a path-breaking technology for DRI making. He has said earlier that sooner or later people will understand the benefits of Coal Gasification and making DRI through the technology. He also suggested generating power and petroleum products through coal gasification to get high value. 12 | Jindal | May 2022
DRI - Angul The synthesis gas produced from the CGP contains 60 percent hydrogen. We can make the cheapest blue hydrogen from this. The Government needs to ensure the availability of coal to the CGP from a single coal mine; so that it can get coal of consistent quality and achieve better efficiency. Coal Gasification Plants needs to be promoted in and around coal- bearing areas so that the logistics expenses are minimized. India should install Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plants based on Syn. Gas or Coal gas. This will help Govt. in reducing coal transportation. Since JSP is a pioneer in the sector, a number of national and international delegations frequently visit CGP running at Angul Steel Complex of JSP. Recently more than 60 delegates of the National Mineral Congress & a team of 20 IAS probationers visited the site and appreciated the use of Gasification Technology in Steel Making. The visit by 60 delegates of the National Mineral Congress was organized by the Indian National Committee World Mining Congress Jindal | May 2022 | 13
60 delegates of the National Mineral Congress visit to CGP - Angul and supported by the Ministry of Coal. The visiting team is comprised of senior mining professionals from various metal, mining & mining technology organizations across India. JSP is the first steelmaker in the world to produce steel through the CGP – DRI route. JSP commissioned the Coal Gasification Plant of 225,000 NM3 in 2014, a milestone in steel making in India. The CGP uses high ash coal abundantly available in India. The Coal-Gasification Plant set up by Jindal Steel & Power at Angul has become a ‘Technology Demonstrator’ and is frequently visited by national and international dignitaries and organizations. Students from Harvard University and MIT visited the CGP and wrote out an in-depth case study on it earlier. IAS Probationers at Angul 14 | Jindal | May 2022
