Cover Story O.P. Jindal Global University An Unparalleled Institution Little more than a decade ago, not many could have imagined the rural hinterland of Haryana emerging as the provenance of world-class, truly global and multi-disciplinary education in India. Today, the O.P. Jindal Global University (OPJGU), an Institution of Eminence, nestled in the modest town of Sonipat, is on its way to becoming the behemoth of international education setting a benchmark, few institutions can hope to attain. Recognised by its signature criss-crossed steel cantilevered façade, OPJGU founded as a philanthropic initiative of its Founding Chancellor, Mr. Naveen Jindal, Chairman of the Jindal Steel & Power (JSP) in memory of his father, Mr. O.P. Jindal in 2009, has quickly established itself as one of India’s most renowned institutions for law, humanities and liberal arts. With over 9,000 students and 1,000 + faculty living on its fully residential campus, OPJGU has grown leaps and bounds from a humble start of 100 students and one school in 2009 to 12 schools in 2022. 10 | Jindal | July 2022

View from the top The latest London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2023 helped OPJGU further cement its position as India’s No. 1 Private University for the third year in a row. Ranked in the 651-700 band, it became the only private university from India to find a place among the world’s Top 700 universities – a rare feat by a non- STEM, Non-Medicine University. Out of the 41 institutions which have been ranked from India, JGU is the only university with a focus solely on social sciences, arts and humanities. Additionally, the university is ranked amongst the top 250 in the world in faculty-student ratio, and is also the top 450 universities in the world in employer reputation. Lauding the achievement, Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, OPJGU’s Founding Vice-Chancellor and a Rhodes Scholar, said, “The QS World University Rankings provide millions of students around the world with a benchmark for choosing higher education institutions. To be featured among the top 700 best universities around the world in this prestigious list that covers 100 locations and over 40,000 universities in the world is a matter of tremendous significance for OPJGU as the university has emerged as a top destination for world-class education Jindal | July 2022 | 11

in India within just 12 years since its founding. The fact that OPJGU has maintained its position as the No. 1 Private University in India for three years in a row amid the extremely challenging circumstances of the devastating global pandemic exhibits the resilience of the university’s strong foundations designed to foster academic excellence and create exciting new opportunities for our students”. Internationalization is at the very core of OPJGU’s mission to create open spaces for research, dialogue and innovation through interdisciplinary education and hands-on learning. It is this mission that has driven OPJGU to hire full-time faculty members from over 40 countries and collaborate with over 350 leading institutions spread across 65 countries around the world. A multidisciplinary approach Bolstering its reputation as a multidisciplinary university, OPJGU now boasts twelve schools with a focus on Law, Business & Management, International Affairs, Public Policy, Liberal Arts & Humanities, Journalism, Art & Architecture, Banking & Finance, Environment & Sustainability, Psychology & Counselling, Languages & Literature and Public Health & Human Development. 12 | Jindal | July 2022

While its flagship school, the Jindal Global Law School has been ranked 70th best law school globally, and No. 1 in India in the QS World University Rankings by Subject (Law) 2022, the other schools too are bucking the trend in their respective fields. In 2021, OPJGU set up three new schools - Jindal School of Psychology & Counselling, Jindal School of Language & Literature, and Jindal School of Public Health & Human Development. Professor Dabiru Sridhar Patnaik, Registrar, OPJGU, said, “As only those universities which shine on teaching and research quality make it to the QS World University Rankings, being recognised as one of the world’s Top 700 universities by QS puts OPJGU in a distinguished league of internationally acclaimed universities. The high employer reputation score of OPJGU also signifies that the university has been successful in providing our students with the necessary preparations needed for securing gainful employment. Moreover, it underlines that the graduates produced by OPJGU have been competent, innovative and proficiat. What makes OPJGU an incredible institution that it is today is the spirit of public service with which it functions. We remain committed to continuing this tradition of institutional excellence.” Jindal | July 2022 | 13

OPJGU is one of the first universities that endeared the SDGs stipulated by the United Nations. It released a first-of-its-kind compliance report, mapping the implementation of the 17 SDGs on its campus, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has created a sustainable model with solar power generation by contributing excess power to the grid. The university has instituted zero-net emission policies and invested in on-campus renewable energy production by developing long term resource efficiency and management plans. Close to 55% of university’s campus is under a green cover. It was also recently recognised for its significant contribution in the field of disaster management and disaster risk reduction with the prestigious World Congress on Disaster Management – Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDM-DRR) Award 2022. The meteoric rise to the top of this young university is indeed an incredible success story! 14 | Jindal | July 2022
