Flash Fiction 500 It is said that we all have a story to tell, a book inisde us waiting to be written, but do you have a fictional story of 500 words or less that you’d like to share with our readers? Yes? Great! Why not email it to: [email protected] for publication in a future issue. The Viewing Phil and I huddled close around the corner of the bay window taking shelter from the biting October wind. I reckon Aberdeen must be the bleakest place in Scotland today. The heavens were threatening to throw buckets of water at us. The estate agent was late. He should have arrived ten minutes ago. One thing I don’t like is tardiness. Mind you, I wasn’t sure this was a good house to view judging by the tatty front door. The wood had been severely clawed, probably by a poor dog left out in the cold, a bit like we were right now. At quarter past the hour a swanky car pulled up outside the gate. Posh git, I thought, as the suit stepped from the car. I don’t like BMWs anyway! After apologising for being late he placed the key into the keyhole. Well it was a hole, and the key did unlock the door, but the keyhole itself must have been almost an inch in diameter, like it had been chiselled away by someone trying to remove the lock. “Sorry I’m late. Traffic.” he said. I sarcastically smiled before slyly whispering to Phil, “And he’s a bloody Sassanach!” The agent pushed the door open and gestured with his hand for us to enter the house. “After you.” As the door swung inward to the hallway, the stench rushed forward to greet us. I shuddered from head to toe. Covering my nose and mouth with my scarf to protect against the stench I walked through the front door, turning at the first door on the left and into the lounge. The lounge! Who the hell would lounge in here? The air clung to my skin and I began to itch. My eyes darted around the room. I spied a shiny silver slug trail stretching across a grimy rug which was curled at the edges. An old inkjet printer coated with dust and grime sat on the floor in an alcove, dead and awaiting burial. Wires hung loosely from the wall where an electrical socket should have been. The radiator, ripped from the wall, was clinging to its pipes for dear life. I didn’t want to see what should be the kitchen, bathroom or bedrooms. With my nose still covered I turned and strode out through the door, quickly followed by Phil and the agent. Outside the agent apologised, saying it should not be on the market. “Damned right it shouldn’t,”I responded, “It needs demolishing not renting!” 12

Will we ever be prepared to release the stress from our lives? You may ask how you can possibly do this when facing big problems, or when life seems to go horribly wrong. There are times when things seem incredibly difficult, circumstances arise and you just cannot see any way round the problems you are faced with. At such times the problems tend to fill your whole mind, and you can think of nothing else. Why not TRY something different. Ask yourself if you can do anything about the possible chaos that surrounds you, and if you can, then take those steps right away. Being actively involved in doing something will make you worry less and give your mind something to focus on. Now if you CANNOT do anything about the problems, as hard as this may be, you will have to try to accept it and start on the three A’s. Acceptance. Adjustment. Achievement. Engrave those words on your mind now for future reference, and look at them now and start to apply them if you need success in releasing stress today. Acceptance: If you CANNOT change the things in your life then you have to accept them. The moment you stop the fight against the unalterable there will be a feeling of a weight having been lifted. You will, gradually, be able to be happy in spite of the problems with an attitude change on your part. Release the stress! It will almost certainly go when you learn to control the way you think and the things that you think about. It may be like learning a whole new way of things - some people use small cards that say, “What are you thinking?” Looking at these on a regular basis through the day will trigger off a more positive thought pattern. Become aware of how much negative thinking you do! That may sound too simple to be effective but, believe me, I don’t knock anything that works, and I know people who have used this system successfully. Adjustment: This will come naturally once you have accepted the fact that Violet King things are not going to change. Look at that word again. Adjustment - this means mentally. Adjust to the fact that no changes will be made at this Personal moment in time, if ever, and get into step with the way things are going to be Confidential until perhaps some time in the future. Release the stress! Counsellor Achievement: When acceptance and adjustment have taken place you will go on to achieve things you never thought possible. This is how to feel peace For information of mind, by realising that against all odds you have managed to achieve please ring happiness and a purpose for living again. You will realise success! 966928256 or Take Care….Till the next time! 634312179. Violet King Alternatively send an email to: vmking303@ yahoo.com 17

Rock Climbing In Busot With Spain being one of the most mountainous countries in Europe, and Alicante being one of the most mountainous regions in Spain, it isn’t surprising that this area is a bustling climbing paradise. Add the amazing climate, the food, and the friendly people and you have (in my opinion) one of the nicest climbing areas in Europe. Within an hour’s drive of Alicante there are numerous climbing areas such as Sella, Puig Campana, Guadalest, Peñas del Marín, Redován, Peñon de Ifach, Cabeço d’Or as well as many many more (if I named them all this would be an article of just names). Each area has a variety of predominant climbing styles with a mixture of both sport climbing and trad climbing being common. For those of you who don’t know much about climbing let me explain: Sport climbing is where the climbing route has preinstalled bolts in the rock to which you clip the rope as you progress. The rope is tied to your harness and goes down through the karabiners on the bolts to a device on your climbing partner’s harness. In the event of a fall the device locks onto the rope and you are caught by the last bolt which you clipped the rope to. This is a simple, effective and generally a really safe way to climb, which also makes the sport more accessible to your everyday people (you don’t have to be an athlete to enjoy a day climbing). Trad climbing follows the same principle of clipping the rope to stop your fall, yet you don’t clip to bolts but to pieces of gear (mainly cams and nuts and sometimes pitons) which you yourself place into cracks and holes in the rock as you progress. Instead of using in situ bolts you use “floating” protection which is later removed. Most crags in this part of Spain tend to have a mixture of these two styles, as well as a mixture of different climbing grades (which depends on the steepness, size and quality of the holds, position of the holds etc.) which makes climbing a fun and generally accessible sport for everyone - but make sure you know what you’re doing first! – if you aren’t going with an experienced climber there are courses available from some of the local indoor climbing gyms. So the nearest crag to Alicante (I should probably call it a collection of crags because it’s a huge mountain with many different climbing sectors) is the Cabeço d’Or in Busot, whose geological formation was discussed in previous articles. This is one of my favorite places to climb (and where I learnt to climb) as it has a variety of different climbing styles, grades and sizes. There are abundant trad and sport climbing multipitch routes (one short route on top of another and then on top of another and like that all the way up to the top) of up to 300m, 18

as well as several excellent quality sport climbing crags with very aesthetic lines and grades for everyone’s ability. It is also an amazing place for hiking, with some stunning views from the top (1207m), and cave exploration (the Canelobre caves are definitely worth a visit). The Cabeço d’Or has a long history of climbing, with some of the first routes being established in the 80’s – before the modern safety equipment was even invented! Some of the homemade pitons (hammered in pieces of metal for clipping the rope to) can still be seen on some of the older routes. After a while this area was forgotten and it wasn’t until more recent times that the climbing boom started again. In the last decade or so hundreds of new routes have been established, new crags have been cleaned of loose rocks and bolted, and new paths have been made. This year the Busot town hall have started contributing by providing funds to the Busot Climbing Club to bolt new routes as well as providing a clubhouse. In the near future several new crags with hundreds of new routes will be opened. The main climbing areas aren’t hard to find, all you have to do is follow the signs for the Canelobre caves and park on the big curve in the road before reaching the caves. There is an information board there with maps of the area and the more common hiking routes. Some of the newer crags (Tocayo and Jabugo) are accessed by taking the first road to the right before the turn off to the Canelobre Caves (heading from Busot). If you do want to climb and want a more comprehensive guide of the sectors, the routes and their locations I would recommend buying “Cabeço d’Or: Guia de Escalada” by Manuel Bernabeu, and supplementing the guidebook with information from some of the climbing blogs and forums (mainly saltatela.blogspot.co.uk and www.matxinklimb.com) and climbing magazines (in the magazine Escalar nº 97 there is information about some of the newer sport climbing crags in the area – Sector Tocayo and Jabugo). Also I’m sure the guys in the climbing shops in Alicante will be more than happy to provide information, advice and point you in the right direction. If anyone would like more advice just send me an email to [email protected] Matthew Clancy 19

Tech Tips Microsoft Office 2016 Yes, I know we’re only half way through 2015 but Microsoft are letting anyone who wants to try out the forthcoming version of Office download it for free. The difference to a normal (30 day) trial is that this one lasts until mid November 2015 which is when the product is due to be released. This is the complete Office suite, with Word, Excel, Outlook etc. and obviously they are hoping to get you hooked so you pay up when the trial ends, but you don’t have to. I have successfully installed the new version on my PC alongside my old version, but Microsoft have warned that if you decide to give it a try you might need to reinstall your current Microsoft Office programs should you decide not to subscribe to the new version in November. You can download it from: https://products.office.com/en-us/office-2016-preview I have installed it on my two Windows 10 PCs as well as my everyday laptop. For the windows 10 pcs I had to set up all my emails in the Outlook email app that is part of Office but on my main pc it imported all my accounts from Windows Mail which I had been using. So far almost everything is working well, but the purpose of the trial is for Microsoft to get feedback as they are with Windows 10 so you should expect the odd glitch. Feedback on issues is easy with a smiley face button to send good as well as bad comments. As a writer, one of the nicest features I have come across in the short time I have been trying it is the ability to resume where you left off. I believe this was available on Office 2013 but I have been using an earlier version so cannot be sure if this is so. Windows 10 Update: You are probably aware by now that the release date for Windows 10 has been set for July 29th. If you are running a PC with Windows 7 upwards, you might have already noticed a small icon on the taskbar which is offering you the chance to register for Windows 10 when it is released. If you register, it will be downloaded when available and you will be able to install at a time convenient to you. Most importantly it is free, and Microsoft have assured us that it will continue to be free from now on. They also say that you can revert to your old version of Windows if you wish to. If you haven’t seen the upgrade option, then it might be because you don’t have Windows set to automatically update itself. Other reasons include: You don’t have Windows 7 with SP1 or Windows 8.1, your version of Windows is not genuine, or your PC is not considered to have the requirements needed to run Windows 10. PCs that are not considered suitable for Windows 10 will see the update flag after July 29th and can then use this to check what part of the PCs is failing Microsoft’s test. If you are running an illegal version of Windows 7 etc. then it is not too clear what the position is. Some sources have said that you will be able to upgrade, but the illegality will remain. Other sources are saying you can buy a genuine copy and install that. I would assume that the downloads of the new system will happen before the 29th since millions of 26

For Advertising Please Call 634 327 682 PCs trying to download it at the same time would prove unmanageable. Whenever the download happens, it is unlikely to be available before the 29th.. The current build for those of us trying it out is 10130 and we are told this is most likely the definitive version although fixes and tweaks will still be coming out. Most of the bugs have been ironed out and all in all it’s looking good. There will be those who don’t like it, I’m sure, but if it behaves as it should then it’s an improvement over 8.1, and being upgraded from now on for free is a great plus. It would appear that some of the games have been removed, but as Microsoft are still adding features almost every day, it’s likely these will be back by the time it gets released. My copy of Windows 10 has a “Preview” where most of the Solitaire games are still functioning. Time, of course, will tell for sure though. Email Apps: I don’t often recommend a commercial product here but if you use a Chrome OS computer then a decent email app has been hard to find unless you use Hotmail or Gmail etc. On my Android phone I use a product called Aqua Mail and have found it excellent. The free version only allows for two email accounts, but for about 4 or 5 Euros (a one-off payment) you can buy the pro version and add as many as you wish - something I did soon after trying it out. Now it’s available for the Chrome OS computers, it’s free and it’s the pro version so you can add all your accounts. It supports most email formats including IMAP and POP3 and also supports IMAP push where emails appear as soon as they are received at your server. Definitely worth a look if you want a decent email client for your phone, tablet or now Chrome OS computer. I just wish they’d bring out a version for the PC!
