Spring is here now, and the vaccination program should mean that things will begin to return to life once again this year. We may still have restrictions, but they are for our own good, and as more people are vaccinated, they will be reduced so this year, it is like a spring for humans as well as nature. With us all having to spend longer at home, we have tried to include more for you to do or read, and included a story for the younger ones, and us older ones who are still children at heart. We are particularly pleased to welcome Vince Tracy back to write for us. As well as producing some fascinating articles for us, Vince has a website where you can discover some great podcasts - some of them interviews with artists sadly no longer with us. Sages, growing and caring for Salvia plants By Roald Goorman Salvia is a genus of more than 1000 different species of sage, of which the common garden sage is the best known. Sages belong to the mint family (Lamiaceae) , like many other culinary herbs as Thyme, Lavender and Marjoram. It is already possible to create a quite attractive and impressive garden, by just working with these well known aromatic plants, but let us venture out of the ordinary and explore the wonderful world of the ornamental sages! Salvia nemorosa or woodland sage: This perennial is native to Central and Eastern Europe into parts of Western Asia. It has a long history in garden cultivation, thanks to its easy cultivation and attractive long lasting flowers. These plants are best grown in groups of 3 or more plants close together to create dramatic effect, when growing in borders, they combine wonderfully with grasses and pink to red flowers. 8
Salvia farinacea it The mealycup sage is a non woody perennial native to Northern Mexico and Southwestern parts of the US. Being a fast growing plant, in more northern climes it is grown as an annual, but here with our mild winters can be grown as a perennial plant. Grow in sunny borders, and it will reward you with bloom from late spring till autumn. Keep deadheading to prevent it from becoming straggly. Salvia canariensis The Canary Island sage is a large woody perennial, and best grown as a shrub as it can get pretty large. This plant can be grown as a solitary bush or incorporated in a larger border, make sure that distance between plants is at least 2 feet , otherwise other smaller plants will be smothered under the vigorous growth of this showy sage. Grow in a sunny spot with well draining soil, if you are gardening on heavy clay, best plant it in raised planters or beds to improve drainage. Do not overwater, especially not on heavy soils. Prune back hard in midwinter to ensure compact growth the following season. 9
Salvia aurea The golden sage hails from South Africa and it has an unusual flower colour for a sage, yellow buds opening to russet gold coloured flowers. A very easy and undemanding bush. Grow it on a sunny spot and keep soil relatively dry, as overwatering will provoke heavy growth and little bloom. Prune hard back in winter to keep size modest and plant compact. When kept on the dry side , the leaves of this plant take on a greyish hue which contrasts nicely with other green shrubs in the garden. Salvia sclarea Clary Sage originates from the eastern Mediterranean all the way into western Asia. It is a biennal plant, like foxglove (Digitalis), and the first year it will only produce leaves in rosettes, to bring forth a spectacular bloom the next year. Grow in groups in a sunny border. 10
Salvia greggii The autumn sage, this sage from the Southwestern part of the US has bright red flowers and is a striking sight in any garden. This plant grows as a small woody shrub, no taller than 60 cm/2 feet. It flowers profusely from early spring till late autumn. This sage tends to get woody and straggly, so a regular light pruning is recommended, although it tolerates heavy pruning, I would not recommend it as some plants do not recover from such a treatment and simply die. Grow in a sunny spot and keep it on the dry side. Salvia rosmarinus The rosemary, this is the newest addition to the sage family! Previously known under its own genus name Rosmarinus officinalis, genetic research has revealed that this species is not distinct enough from the other sages to warrant being classified under its own genus, so it has been renamed Salvia rosmarinus. A popular, very easy and undemanding shrub, this Mediterranean plant has been cultivated for its culinary uses, like its cousin the Salvia officinalis. The rosemary can be grown on any soil, as long as the place is sunny. Prevent waterlogging and keep on the dry side. Would you like to know more about these wonderful plants? Jokes Page A man and his ever-nagging wife went on vacation to Jerusalem. While they were there, the wife passed away. The undertaker told the husband, \"You can have her shipped home for £5,000, or you can bury her here, in the Holy Land, for £150.\" The man thought about it and told him he just would have her shipped home. The undertaker asked, \"Why would you spend £5,000 to ship your wife home when it would be wonderful to be buried here and you would spend only £150?\" The man replied, \"Long ago a man died here, was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead. I just can't take that chance.\" ==== Little Billy asks his dad for a telly in his room. Dad reluctantly agrees. The next day Billy comes downstairs and asks, 'Dad, what's love juice?' Dad looks horrified and tells Billy all about sex. Billy just sat there with his mouth open in amazement. Dad says, 'So what were you watching?' Billy says, 'Wimbledon.' ==== The pastor entered his donkey in a race and it won. The pastor was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in the race again, and it won again. The local paper read: PASTOR'S ASS OUT FRONT. The Bishop was so upset with this kind of publicity that he ordered the pastor not to enter the donkey in another race. The next day, the local paper headline read: BISHOP SCRATCHES PASTOR'S ASS. This was too much for the bishop, so he ordered the pastor to get rid of the donkey. The pastor decided to give it to a nun in a nearby convent. The local paper, hearing of the news, posted the following headline the next day: NUN HAS BEST ASS IN TOWN. The bishop fainted. He informed the nun that she would have to get rid of the donkey, so she sold it to a farmer for £10. The next day the paper read: NUN SELLS ASS FOR £10. This was too much for the bishop, so he ordered the nun to buy back the donkey and lead it to the plains where it could run wild. The next day the headlines read: NUN ANNOUNCES HER ASS IS WILD AND FREE. The bishop was buried the next day. The moral of the story is .. . . Being concerned about public opinion can bring you much grief and misery & even shorten your life. So be yourself and enjoy life. Stop worrying about everyone else's ass and you'll be a lot happier and live longer! 25
