In 10 years, he said he sees himself “still in school working for a doctorate degree in dentistry with specialized training in orthodontics.” Throughout his time in band, Aplin made many close friends, like junior Khairi Williams. “Kahnnor is unique. There is no one that we could add to the band or in the friend group that could replace him; we all love him so dearly and will miss him this upcoming season,” said Williams. Aplin believes that his musical talent is what led him to become a Super Senior this year. His favorite memories at Sparta include anything involving an instrument. Boyd has not only exemplified leadership but also compassion, by always being there to lend a hand. “Ryan is someone who couldn’t say no to a friend in need,” said senior Elijah Miller, one of Boyd’s close friends. As founder and president of Best Buddies club, Boyd has looked out for those who cannot always help themselves. He is known for the way he would consistently work to build strong and lasting relationships with fellow club members and ensure that they never felt judged. He always wanted to make sure no one got left out of any memorable experiences. “He personifies Best Buddies’ goal of incorporating students with special needs into the regular population. One of my best memories of Ryan was seeing him attend prom with a group of Best Buddies,” said the club’s sponsor as well as Boyd’s nominator, English teacher Mrs. June Ashby. Boyd has always been outgoing, friendly and accepting, whether it be inside and outside of the classroom. His ultimate goal is not to be the center of attention, but instead hasspent his time trying to be uplifting to those around him. “I acted as a Spartan should and changed people’s experience just by being there with my attitude and personality,” he said. Next year, Boyd plans to attend Forsyth Technical Community College to do his general education classes and then transfer to a four-year university. When he is done with his education, Boyd would like to find a career that will allow him to use his math and science skills and possibly work with youth who have special needs. Boyd has made an important impact on Sparta by showing all students, especially those with special needs, that they are valued. His compassion and integrity will be missed next year, but these characteristics will always make him a true Spartan at heart. CAILA CATER-EDWARDS, BUSINESS MANAGER THE DORIAN SCROLL 13

HEATHER CHAN \\\\ Due to her significant involvement in visual arts, as well as her kind and caring personality, art teacher Mrs. Alice Morley nominated Heather Chan to be one of this year’s Super Seniors. According to Mrs. Morley, she has never had a more “clever problem solver, avid learner or hardworking artist and will honor the nomination, as she has worked very hard to earn it.” Chan described herself as very quiet but sometimes outgoing when in comfortable environments, traits that those around her see in her as well. “Heather has a dry, funny sense of humor. One class, Heather walked up to another student who was painting flowers, and told them it looked nothing like flowers and just walked away. It was hard not to lose it,” said Mrs. Morley. Chan has been nominated for several awards over the years due to her artwork. She has won the largest number of Gold Key Awards for any student at Sparta as well as the largest number of any student in both WS/FCS and the southeast Region in 2020. Chan was also a Visions Award nominee and received recognition in the regional Scholastic Art competition. When looking back at her high school experience, Chan said she will always remember the time she spent with her friends, who have appreciated the time they shared with her. “Every time I hang out with her, she says something awesome; she is absolutely wonderful, funny, caring and super smart. Chan has decided to attend The University of North Carolina at Charlotte next fall and is hoping to find a profession that has to do with art. “I’m not sure what to expect from Heather; she could do just about anything. Jackson was nominated by his wrestling coach Mr. Joey Edwards, who described him as a “machine” on the wrestling mat. Jackson is not only an athlete, but is also an energetic student who looks forward to graduating and starting his journey toward becoming a U.S. Marine. PHOTO COURTESY OF ABBY KNEISEL Athletically, Kneisel was a valued member of the varsity women’s golf team, earning All-Conference honors for the past two seasons. She also spends much of her time dancing, having participated in honors dance classes at school, as well as high- level competition groups at In Motion Dance Center. Kneisel attributed the dedication and time management skills required to achieve all this as to why she was chosen to be a Super Senior. “I feel like I have accomplished balancing my school life with my social life. I’ve learned how to balance my academics with my dance life with my church life, with my friends,” she said. Aside from her time dancing and playing golf, Kneisel has also been a strong student and was recognized as a junior marshal last spring. She has been involved in a variety of honor societies and clubs as well, including NHS, NEHS and French Club. “Abby has artfully balanced academics (Top 10 in the class), sports (golf team), dance (she spends 15 hours a week with her elite competition group at her studio and attended NC Governor’s School for dance), takes piano lessons and works. I’m amazed she has enough time in her day,” said history teacher Mr. Mike Kneisel, who was Abby’s nominator. When describing herself, Kneisel highlighted her hard-working nature and passion, as well as her dependability, something her fellow peers also value. “I think Abby was nominated to be a Super Senior because of her strong work ethic and her compassion for all those around her. Due to her outstanding achievements in PHOTO COURTESY OF TAYLOR MARTIN and out of the classroom during her over the past four years, Family and consumer science teacher Ms. Nadra Hunte nominated Taylor Martin to be one of this year’s Super Seniors. In addition to holding an officer’s position in the National Technical Honor Society, Martin has competed at both the state and national level in Family, Career and Com- munity Leaders of America events, where she has earned several gold medals, including a national gold in sports nutrition and a silver in entrepreneurship. Friends and teachers all describe Martin as someone who is introverted and hard- working. “Though quiet, [she] has a strength about her that no one should take for granted,” said Ms. Hunte. This has led Martin to performing well in the classroom. “I am a very strong student. I always manage to get my work done and make sure it’s up to par,” she said. Martin believes she has stepped out of her comfort zone to make many friends and try new things throughout high school, efforts that have led to her current success. “She always puts her work first. She always strives to be on top and do the best she can at anything she does,” said close friend and fellow Super Senior Danaya Reynolds. Demosntrating true “Spartan Strong,” Super STARLA MATLOCK Senior Starla Matlock goes above and beyond to help those around her. She is known for her TRUSTWORTHY AND HUMBLE wholehearted participation in every endeavor, and she never shies away from hard work. Matlock is described by her friends as caring, kind and laid-back. She is always very outgoing and friendly. According to close friend and fellow senior Lexi Teale, “Starla was nominated because she’s genuinely nice and a lot of people know her.” Teachers who have had the pleasure of teaching Matlock said she always goes “the extra mile” to help those around her. She always faces her problems head-on and does not back down. One of the Matlock’s senior-year courses was Teacher Cadet, which involved volunteering in an elementary school classroom. “She eagerly chose to work with one of the more rambunctious little boys at one of the schools we frequently visited for Teacher Cadet. She was able to gain his trust, and he worked for her unlike anyone else,” said Teacher Cadet teacher Ms. Carrie Bennett. Matlock’s humility is also a key factory in her personality. When asked why she believed she was nominated she replied, “I honestly have no idea; I tended to mind my business and do things my way, but I feel like there were plenty of other people that could have been nominated over me.” She also said high school was hard for her at first, as navigating social situations and treating the friends around one well while also taking care of oneself can be a difficult task. However, she loved her senior year and would not change it, because she made some of the best memories this school year. Next year, Matlock plans to enroll in online courses at Forsyth Technical Community College and begin her prerequisites before transferring. Although is still deciding on her major of study, her interests are potentially in psychology, communications, teaching or perhaps business. BROOKLYN MOCILAN Super Senior Brooklyn Mocilan is known for THOUGHTFUL AND POSITIVE fearlessly and energetically immersing herself into the culture at Sparta. She has earned many athletic awards for her participation in volleyball, as well as Track and Field. Mocilan came to Mount Tabor this school year, and said that she has enjoyed her time as a Spartan. “I feel like I accomplished learning to accept and respect everyone no matter the circumstances. I personally had a rocky start, but as time went on I was able to build lasting relationships with my teachers, coaches, and friends,” she said. A two-sport athlete, Mocilan plays volleyball as well as track and field. She is a defensive specialist in volleyball, and she throws for track, though those are just two of the many things that she enjoys at Sparta. She also won the North Carolina Scholar Athlete Award in 2017 and 2018. Mocilan quickly became involved with the school news and was included frequently in media coordinator Mrs. Judy Uhrig’s Friday programming. “She is friendly, kind, caring, thoughtful, she loves to try new things, and is always supportive. She brings air into the room instead of taking it out,” said Mrs. Uhrig. Anywhere Mocilan is, she is making people laugh and feel comfortable around her. Her goal is to make people feel loved and know that she is rooting for them. If someone needs anything, she wants to help in any way possible. During her free period, Mocilan could be found in the Media Center with fellow senior, Adam Gaspar. “She is always positive and makes a great impression with people,” he said. Both Gaspar and Mrs. Uhrig see Mocilan in a leadership position within the next 10 years, most likely in a rehabilitation center encouraging her patients as they recover. Mocilan will attend The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in the fall to study pre- kinesiology, specifically studying injuries and rehabilitation. She hopes to be a physical therapist. Of all that she enjoyed, Mocilan’s favorite memory at Sparta was indoor track and field season with Coach Page and the rest of her throwing team. “We had a positive, fun, successful, and exciting season,” she said. Additionally, Palomo is an strong student, one who has a good sense of humor. “I was working to get a good SAT score so my chances of getting into college increased; fortunately, I was accepted into five univeristies-- five more than I bargained for,” he said. Next year, Palomo will attend Wingate University in Wingate, N.C. where he plans to major in political science or marketing. Palomo has exhibited strong leadership skills throughout his high school career. “Carlos is a wonderfully affable leader of his class and Mount Tabor. He is loved and deeply respected by a wide array of seniors from varied backgrounds,” said Head of Guidance and Palomo’s nominator, Mr. Stan Huck. Palomo has loved being a Spartan ever since his first year on campus. “My favorite memory at Tabor was the pep rally freshman year--we were celebrating 50 years. The energy was there and it was a good glimpse of what Tabor would always be like,” he said. This mutual respect and love for both Sparta and its people is why Palomo was chosen as a Super Senior. He has made the best of his time and has a bright future ahead of him. HARRISON ARMSTRONG, STAFF REPORTER THE DORIAN SCROLL 33

As a student, Romero has been known for taking rigorous and challenging courses to bolster his academic resume. CALEB ROSIER \\\\ Super Senior Caleb Rosier is one of Sparta’s most familiar LAID faces, as he has been an integral part of the theater BACK, program for the past four years, with key performances in shows like Grease, Damn Yankees and The Diviners. YET SUCCESSFUL Rosier was nominated by theater arts teacher Mr. Chad Edwards. stemming from, in Mr. Edwards’ words, Rosier’s “immeasurable contributions to the theater program.” Rosier has performed in every theater production at the school since he has been in high school, around eight productions. One of his standout roles was his performance in I and You, for which he won the NCTC High School play festival Award of Excellence. According to Mr. Edwards, Rosier “has succeeded as a great student in class...with several major roles in plays and musicals.” Rosier has also excelled academically, taking multiple Advanced Placement courses, in addition to college classes at Forsyth Technical Community College. Despite being a talented actor and strong student, Rosier is not overly outgoing. Friends consider him introspective and intelligent, while teachers say he is a bit quiet. He describes himself as “laid back-maybe a bit lackadaisical.” Next year, Rosier will be attending North Carolina State University. However, he is still undecided in his major, as he said he does not like to think too far into the future, instead preferring to see where life takes him. Both friends and teachers believe Rosier will be successful in whatever profession he pursues. Close friend and fellow senior Jean-Luc Theard predicts that Rosier will be “either performing on Broadway or some sort of theater, or [being] a persuasive lobbyist.” OLIVIA SHERRON, A&E CO-EDITOR THE DORIAN SCROLL 40

Nominated by Head Coach Tiesuan Brown, PHOTO COURTESY OFLEE SALES Super Senior Lee Sales has been a leader on and off the football field. Coach Brown believes Sales is not just a great teammate, but simply a good person to have on the Sparta football team. “Lee Sales was...our team leader. All the underclassmen look to Lee for guidance. He is a well-mannered young man who leads by example,” he said. Fellow senior and close friend of Sales, Hasana Peaks, agrees with Coach Brown. “I think Sales was nominated because of his willingness to help others and befriend anyone he comes across,” she said. Peaks became friends with Sales four years ago during their art class. She did not know anyone and “he was so welcoming,” she said. “We had some of our most intellectual and interesting conversations at that table.” Although he played Sparta football for four years, Sales still has one memory that stands out over the rest. “My favorite memory at Tabor would be helping my team stay undefeated my freshman year by picking up a fumble and returning it 85 yards for a touchdown while the time expired,” said Sales, describing a game against West Forsyth High School. Sales is not just a talented linebacker. He is a hardworking student and a multi- sport athlete. “I’ve accomplished a lot at Tabor: 3 times All-Conference, 1 time All Northwest football player. I finished in the top 10 twice in the state for shot put, and I’ve never had below a B letter grade,” he said. Sales has big plans for his future. He will be graduating with a 3.9 GPA, and is committed to Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, N.C., for football. Sales plans to study physical therapy and envisions his future self as “a hopefully wealthy family man who uses his knowledge to help others.” Though Sales’ senior year was cut short, he made the most of his time at Sparta. His dedication to athletics and education allowed him to have endless opportunities to better himself as well as and those around him. LESLIE PIERCE, FEATURE CO-EDITOR THE DORIAN SCROLL 42
