By Elizabeth Cantrell When Harley Viera-Newton selected a cathedral-length veil for her 2017 wedding to fel- low DJ Ross Schwartzman, she joined the ranks of modern brides gravitating toward more traditional forms. (Pippa Middleton, Meghan Markle, and Priyanka Chopra all opted for long, dramatic veils.) “A veil creates these extraordinary moments: when your mother, sister, or bridesmaid puts it on your head, when your father or your husband lifts the blusher,” says Alison Miller, creative direc- tor of Monvieve, the couture veil com- pany behind Viera-Newton’s headpiece. For those tempted to forgo one of the oldest elements of the bridal ensemble (sources trace its origin to ancient Rome), consider a veil’s impact as you glide down the aisle. Cathedral veils, the longest variety, are the most popular. “The veil can never be too long, but it can be too short,” says Miller, who procures silks from Como, Italy, and hand-cut lace from Calais-Caudry, France, for her custom designs.
