Prof. Kar Yan Tam Dean Chair Professor, Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management School of Business and Management HKUSTFinTech is driving a new order of fundamental change to not only traditional financial services, but alsoour future. It is not only about new technologies, but how new opportunities and new jobs are created. As a future business professional, you should closely look at the new wave of advances in technologyand its impact on all walks of life. Our students need to stay ahead of the game so the Business School has taken active steps toposition itself as a FinTech intellectual powerhouse to look into the rich possibilities that FinTechcan offer for our young generation. For example, we will strengthen FinTech course offerings acrossdifferent programs and work closely with other Schools to prepare for an MSc program in FinTech. To promote FinTech and an innovation culture, the School recently organized a “FinTech Week” oncampus, which featured a series of activities including a career fair, company talks, an alumni paneldiscussion, and a Hackathon that encouraged students to test their creative ideas. To support student startups and collaborative projects with businesses, a purpose-designed incubatorwill be set up on campus next year. This, together with other moves, will be an integral part of ourcommitment to prepare our students for tomorrow. This issue’s cover story, “Evolve into Finnovation” comes at an opportune time to enable our peers tolearn more about the new challenges brought on by changes in technology.

Words fromChairperson T YUEN Man Long, Tony Chairperson The Business Students’ Union, HKUSTSU, Session 2016-2017 ime flies and it is now already in November which is almost the end of the term of office of the 26th session. May I take the chance to thank all the external parties, advisors, university officials, members and the executive committee members for all the support given and effort paid. The Union would not be that successful without the support from all the parties mentioned.November issue is definitely my favorite one among the three because the issueincludes every function we have organized in the year 2017. All the best memoriesflash back when the time I flipped through pages and pages of the November issueand I am so amazed by all the things we have achieved. They marked our fruitful termof office.Being an executive committee member is never an easy task for me, let alone theChairperson of The Union. I am so glad to have my 11 fellows to walk along thischallenging year with me. Thousands of challenges we have encountered throughoutthe year. They were all tough yet we managed to find a way out. It is pretty scary toknow how quickly time flies. I still could not believe how much we have gone throughin this magnificent year. As an old saying goes that ‘Time flies over us but leaves itshadow behind us’. I believe that our term of office in the year of 2017 will be one ofthe best memories in our life. I would like to thank all my 11 fellows again for everymoment in the year. The most beautiful thing ever happened to my life is meeting my11 fellows. FinTech has a great potential to develop in the territory because it help exceed the limited boundaries we have now, for example, octopus card, hey coins. However, the convenience in the area triggers the loss of competitive edge. “In Mainland, people are living far from city urban, and holding cash is not safe enough, which is the reason why leading to the booming of Fintech, like alipay.” Now, people in China could pay easily by scanning the code using their mobile phone, walking to a cashless society. These two innovative measures, however, do not generate support from all walks of life. It seems that the convenience in Hong Kong makes it detach from the opportunities as an incubator of FinTech. “ Students in UST has a creative mindset, and he could see the passion of you in going beyond the limits. Try to solicit the support from HKUST. Ideas matter!S Back to HKUST, the school has been very active in promoting T the FinTech Culture. “ Ever Year, we are organising Hackathons for entrepreneurship. This year, cooperating with the School of Business and Management, we have initiated the UHackFin Project”, says Donny. In fact, there are increasing participation in FinTech competitions. In the CUPP 2017, HKUST team Leverus uses block chain to centralise the loan payment, which impresses the judges and investors, winning the award in the end. Donny also has a strong faith in one of the FinTech product invented by alumni Johnson Leung. “The cryptocurrency he has is sure to be the next unicoin in Hong Kong”.

Find A Big Thing“Aim for I-banking if you major in Finance.” “You won’t be surprised to see faces from GlobalBusiness Program on The New York Times.” We are often shaped by expectations from others, as well as the perceptions from the society, while we seldom ask ourselves what we truly want; to follow the norms or, to follow our hearts.Perhaps we could give ourselves pause for an exchange. Travel well always comes better than toarrive. It is about the journey that ventures beyond our comfort zone; we record not only the newplaces but also the new ways of seeing things as our destination, and we talk with people fromdifferent cultures and life experiences, that we could find and locate ourselves in them.Treasure the desire that an exchange program could give us. The true inner desire in life is thestarting point of all achievement, not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire whichtranscends everything.

AI Technology and Jim Cheung Transportation Tesla motors, an electric car company, launched Tesla Autopilot in 2015 which provided Tesla Model S, the driver assist function to help controlling the car and to prevent accidents. It enabled the self-navigating and self-controlling capability of the car, when comparing with other car manufacturers’ driver assist system,.The function reduced the need for drivers’ attention on driving. Social Media Damping Users’ Interpersonal Skills Do you have a friend who doesn’t own a facebook, whatsappNathan Chan or twitter account? Probably not. In fact, an exponential growth of social media’s popularity has been observed due to the advancement of internet communication technology. This trend, nevertheless, has led to some hot debate among the society, mainly focusing on the possibility of hindering users’ interpersonal skills when using social media for interaction. The truth is, whether you agree or not, the risk of damping social media users’ communication ability should not be denied. The growth of social media takes responsibility of hamper netizens from practicing appropriate presentation skills. As mentioned, more people tend to have one or two, if not more, social media accounts, such as whatsapp, Instagram and telegram. These channels allow users to interact with other users without speaking a word, which actually leads to low practice of vocal communication. Extreme cases can be discovered, such as family members chatting in their whatsapp group while sitting aside. This indicates that social media users could possibly refuse to voice out their thoughts after they are adapted to literal communication. Research says that it is most likely that people who talk less have poor social network, as they are not used to respond and interact with others properly. This is one of the problem that overuse of social media leads to. The abuse of emoji and self-created language should be blamed for hindering people’s interpersonal skills. The existence of emoji leads to a lot of confusion. For instance, emoji is created to mimic human beings’ facial expression, but some of them could have multiple implications. One of the most infamous emoji is the dark smiling moon, while some considering it as a simple expression of being indifferent, others use it to show their rage towards their target. When both the sender and receiver have different interpretations, misunderstandings and even conflicts may occur. In addition, some foreigners start typing Asian language in roman alphabets, which may lead to confusion if others cannot comprehend their messages. This indicates people’s reluctance against using precise expression, which hampers their willingness to develop proper interpersonal skills such as utilisation of precise vocabularies and proper sentence structures. There is no reason for terminating social platforms which are extremely fruitful for delivering freedom of speech and widening netizens’ horizon. It is vital, nonetheless, for netizens to have self-awareness against their habit of communication via social media, to defer themselves from being misunderstood all the time.

Robot Labour: A with Sides Coin Two Nathan Chan The first industrial revolution, which initiated in the mid-18th century, left a legacy. Manufacturers started to utilise machineries for mass production, and the trend grew through replacement of human labour in multifarious industries, for instance, catering, financing and logistics. Alongside with many benefits, drawbacks and controversies have been aroused to the surface. History has proven that robot labour enhances productivity exponentially. Primitive machines powered by steam engine aided textile workers to raise productivity by 40% during the first industrial revolution. With the advancement of technology, human workers can now be substituted by robot labour. For instance, on 31st October 2017, Alibaba had been discovered using UAV, a type of drone, to deliver fruit packages across Fujian Province and Meizhou Island, acting as a substitute towards conventional shipping. Without human labour, human mistakes and risk of declined productivity can be highly reduced as machineries are formalised, therefore with lower risk of the occurrence of labour shortage, and a possible lower production cost, robot labour gains an upper hand over human labour. Despite the advantages, introduction of robot labour carries out a lot of social issues. Technological unemployment may occur. Research says that each extra automated robot in the US labour market takes over five workers in average, implying that 1 additional robot labour leads to five employees’ unemployment. Moreover, wages in places where robot labour is imported falls approximately 0.25% to 0.5%. With the deduction in income, people’s living standard are actually declining without compensation from any sources.Current Growing popularity of robot labour does not only affect influenced Business employees, but also the government. With the introduction of robot Affairs labour, the amount of income tax able to be collected reduces in a certain proportion, meaning that the government’s income tends to reduce. In addition, local governments have to compensate unemployed population’s living standard through provision of social welfare, both monetary and non-monetary. A rise in expense and fall in income worsens the financial inequality. Some suggest imposing tax on robot labour to widening a government’s tax base, ultimately easing its problem of decreasing income. It is proposed that a portion of sales generated by robot automation should be taxed, under the goal of aiding government’s income and securing human labours’ job. Nevertheless, critics point out that imposing tax hinders companies from fully utilising robot labour, therefore deferring a corporation from maximising its productivity. Also, the low feasibility leads to politics’ objection against its implementation.

Difficulties of Sharing Economy in Hong KongA few UBER drivers have been prosecuted of not having permits for hire car or third-party insurance totake passengers. Their arrest was then followed a court ruling in March that saw another five driversfined HK$10,000 each and banned from the road for a year. UBER, Airbnb, Sharing Bikes are findingmore difficulties to operate in Hong Kong. Sharing Bikes are complained for occupying pedestrianpaths with chaos; Airbnb and UBER were strictly surveilled by authority of HKSAR Government to deterthem from further development in the city. Some legislators criticized the government for being overly rigid towards emerging businessesintroduced in Hong Kong in which public needs are generally being neglected. Examples in the 1960swere raised by critics – by that time, minibus was not legitimized during the period of riots in 1967,in which individual minibus operators provide 7-seat to 9-seat temporary services in urban areas andremote districts of the city. The government later relaxed the relevant ordinances and law to allowminibus operators under regulation. For the same case, the government should consider uplifting theban from sharing economy businesses to respond positively on public needs and voices for morequality alternatives. However, there can be differences between expectations and reality. Implementation of sharing economybusinesses and the governments’ regulation has paramount importance to secure the purpose ofsharing ideas be achieved. For instance, founders of Gobee Bike aimed to distribute 20,000 sharedbikes in the city. The quantity goal has been achieved but it comes with more management problemsand issues. Bicycles are parked illegally in neighbourhood that the businesses attempt gaining moremarket share but placing too many vehicles in single spot. Another problem arisen from the idea is thatthere is no strict regulations on when and where should the lenders return the bicycles.Opinions from the general public urge the government to negotiate and collaborate with thesebusinesses to see if a balanced ecosystems of sharing economy can be attained in the community.Technologies can be leveraged to solve part of the issues. In Guangzhou, China, some sharing bicycleoperators will offer both monetary and non-monetary incentives to cyclers by gathering lost bicyclesfrom remote areas to centralized points in city centre. At the same time, the government may considerrelaxing the law to open for competition – but at the same time impose some restrictions to make surethe current interplay between different stakeholders can remain unaffected.A well-prepared and proper strategy on Sharing Economy can benefit the many in society. Under theimpacts of globalization and proliferation of mobile technology, sharing economy seems inevitable inthe coming times. We shall embrace the coming of these firms, while being cautious to secure ourculture and living standard.
