Three years later, the winners are now seniors and have come a long way since 2009, becoming “Original CATCH kids,” a title given to students who have attended CATCH since the ninth grade. The funny thing about growing up and change is that the new self cannot recognize the old self. Take a look at how these original (or “OG”) CATCH kids have grown from winning a shoe competition as freshmen to seniors on their way to college.8 C.A.T.C.H. The Magazine 2012

Acrynliacils Acrylic nails have always been a major fashion phenomenon. Little girls couldn’t wait for their mothers to let them wear acrylics and style them whichever way they wanted to. However in inner city schools acrylic nails are getting harder and harder to find. What was once a necessity is now a rarity, and one must wonder, why? Economy. America’s economic situation has been in ruins for a few years now, and experts say it will get worse before it gets better. But nail salons aren’t economists, and instead of lowering prices for consumers they’ve raised them. Inner city girls simply can’t afford stylish acrylic nails every two weeks anymore. Out-of-style. Fashion trends come and go, and as acrylic nails have reigned for so long, it’s time for the polymer powder and adjoining liquid to take a break. Health. The longer acrylics are left on nails the weaker natural nails become. When acrylics are finally taken off, the natural nail is left brittle, soft and sensitive, and won’t return to normal for a few months. If the tip is separated from the nail bed, fungi can get in between and cause a nasty infection, resulting in the removal of a whole nail. Accidentscan also occur that can rip off part or all of the acrylicand natural nail as well. Many jobs prohibit theiremployees from wearing these nails for these risksas well. Acrylics will always be remembered as verystylish and fashionable, but their time has come andgone in popular culture.

when
you
had
to
color
an
obscure
picture
of
shapes
based
on
the
number
in
the
shape
and
the
color
that
matches
the
number?

This
was
probably
the
most
basic
form
of
connecting
math
to
art
for
most
of
us.

But
math
and
art
have
a
stronger
connection
than
you
may
think.

If
you
stop
to
look
at
the
design
of
the
architecture
of
buildings,
you
may
notice
the
intense
math
calculations
that
went
into
its
construction.

For
instance,
the
screen
of
the
computer
you
use
everyday
is
derived
from
what
is
considered
appealing
to
the
eye
based
on
a
mathematical
ratio.

And,
look
at
all
the
beautiful
celebrities
in
a
magazine
or
on
TV.

You’d
be
surprised
to
find
out
that
the
definition
of
beauty
is
based
on
a
mathematical
relationship.

Believe
it
or
not,
the
relationship
between
art
and
mathematics
isn’t
anything
new—In
fact,
it
has
been
going
on
for
centuries.
THE
GOLDEN
RATIO
For
a
large
portion
of
math
related
art,
it
all
begins
with
the
Golden
Ratio.

Defined
by
the
Greeks
and
the
Egyptians
as
what
is
aesthetically
appealing
to
the
eye,
the
Golden
Ratio
is
the
ratio
of
the
sum
of
two
quantities
to
the
larger
quantity
is
equal
to
the
ratio
of
the
larger
quantity
to
the
smaller
quantity.

In
other
words,
 ,
where
a
is
the
larger
quantity
and
b
is
the
smaller
quantity.

The
Golden
Ratio
can
be
viewed
as
a
rectangle

18 C.A.T.C.H. The Magazine 2012

If
you
were
to
divide
the
length
by
the
height
of
a
rectangle
constructed
by
the
Golden
Ratio,
you
will
find
the
number
to
be
1.618…

Any
rectangle
that
is
constructed
in
this
manner
is
called
a
Golden
Rectangle
and
is
considered
to
be
pleasing
to
the
human
eye,
as
it
is
easy
to
view.

As
a
matter
of
fact,
we
still
use
this
concept
today.

If
you
have
a
Mac
computer
or
any
flat‐screen
TV,
look
at
the
screen
and
measure
its
length
and
its
height,
and
then
divide
them.

You
will
find
that
the
ratio
is
approximately
1.6.

ARCHITECTURE
Look
at
the
Parthenon
and
the
Pyramid.

Can
you
see
anything
familiar
about
them?

It
may
not
be
so
noticeable
with
the

but
by
looking
at
the

The

but
in
a
less

manner.

If
you

you

see
that

 BEAUTY
 It

But
what
 defines

Is
there
a
way
to

and
just

that
that

 Well,
during
the

many

 some

or

For
instance,
it
is
said
that
he
 would
paint
using
the
Golden

As
you
can
see
in
the

It’s funny how history repeats itself time and time again. This year, two CATCH faculty members teach at the very campus theirrelatives attended. Miss Fukuyama, the World History and Governmentteacher, and Miss Taniguchi, the Special Education coordinator, wereshocked when they found out that their father and uncle, respectively, attended Audubon Middle School. It’s fascinating how their relativesattended Audubon at the same time and how decades later, theyboth teach in the classrooms their uncle and father sat in.Miss Fukuyama Miss Taniguchi and her father, and her uncle, Les Fukuyama Thomas Tayama (Audubon, (Audubon, class of ‘69) class of ‘70) C.A.T.C.H. Krump Teyauna Taylor, also known as Auna, or informally, Pocahontas, has been linked to CATCH far longer than how long she’s been in attendance. Back in 2008, she came to CATCH as a dancer for local celebrity Tommy the Clown for a performance. “Dancing is my life,” an enthusiastic Auna proclaims. Having danced since she was three, Auna has been trained in ballet, modern and choreography with Debbie Allen, and has been dancing with Tommy the Clown since 2001. “Dancing with Tommy has been an incredible experience! I’ve traveled all over the world, to countries such as Italy, Japan, New Zealand, England, Germany, just to name a few. I’ve also been in music videos and movies, too.” You can see her (wearing the red hat below) in the movie Rize, a documentary about clown and krump dancing. C.A.T.C.H. The Magazine 2012 33

MATH MESSING WITH STATISTICS Regardless of how much, or how little we actually see of it, mathematics is all around us. It's soingrained in our daily lives that it's practically impossible to go a day without needing to use math. You can't go to the store without adding up costs for groceries and you can't watch most sports withouthearing some statistics on the players or the teams. Of all of the different branches of mathematics, statistics is probably one of the most noticeableones in sports. Let's take basketball as an example. It's very important for basketball players to have adecent free throw percentage. This is a type of statistic that tells you how often a player successfullyshoots a free throw shot. Other statistics include things like number of assists, blocks, steals, points, and many more. All of these are very important to determine who is the best player. However, statistics are strange in many regards. If used or viewed incorrectly, they can lead tocompletely false conclusions. For instance, let's say we want to compare Kobe to LeBron. To keep itsimple, even though basketball is played in four quarters of 12 minutes, let's just look at their field shotpercentage for two imaginary halves of one game, as shown in the table below. Kobe First Half Second Half TotalLeBron 15 / 30 3/5 18/35 2/5 14 / 25 16/30 From the table, we can see that Kobe made 15 out of 30 shots in the first half and 3 out of 5shots in the second half. This means that during the entire game Kobe made 18 out of the 35 shots hetook. LeBron’s total was tallied the same way. Now, let's say we wanted to ask, “Based on their shotsonly, who was the better player?” Here's where the weird part of statistics kicks! Depending on howyou choose to look at these statistics, either one of them can be considered “better” than the other!Let's change the fractions in the first and second half to percentages so it's easier to compare them: Kobe First Half Second Half TotalLeBron 50% 60% 18/35 40% 56% 16/30 If we look at the first half, Kobe clearly has a better shooting percentage than LeBron. So we'dsay during the first half, Kobe outdid LeBron. Now, looking at the second half, we see the stats arerepeated. Someone looking at these percentages might say, “It's obvious that Kobe did better thanLeBron since he beat him during each half of the game!” But how about we look at the totals? Kobe'stotal (18/35) comes out to 51.4%. LeBron’s total, however, is 53.3%. Therefore, Kobe beat LeBronduring each quarter, and LeBron comes out on top in the end. How in the world did that happen?Weighted averages! To understand how this happened, we need to look at exactly how many shots each player took. The following bar graph shows a visual that might help. Kobe took the bulk of his shots in the first half(when his percent was 50) and took only a very few shots in the second half (when his percent was 60).This is why, when we look at his total percent, it'll turn out to be closer to 50 than to 60 percent.LeBron on the other hand, took few shots in the first half (when his percent was 40) and took manymore shots in the second half (when his percentage was 56). Thus, LeBron’s total shooting percentended up much closer to 56 than to 40.40 C.A.T.C.H. The Magazine 2012

35 Kobe30 Lebron2520 Second Half1510 5 0 First Half Sometimes it’s hard to see what’s going on without an exaggerated example. Let’s imagine thata very bad player ends up making 0 out of 100 shots (or 0%) in one half. Then he makes 1 out of 1shots (100%) in the second half. He’s made a grand total of 1 out of 101 shots. This is just shy of 1%. So as you’ve just seen, statistics can sometimes be deceiving. Nevertheless, they’re still veryimportant. They give us easy ways to compare overall performance of players in sports. But, onceagain, be careful of how you look at them! C.A.T.C.H. The Magazine 2012 41

I plopped down my schoolbag. “M’ dear this better work,” I whispered.on my bed, close to tears. “But m’dear I don’t want My grandmother walked me down our block to school,to go! I want to stay home with you!” She sat down through the main hallway to the classroom I was assigned. There, a tall, slender woman was waiting by the door, as if she was waiting for me. I stopped a few feet behind. My grandmother looked down at me, nudging me forward. I almost forgot I had the apple in my hand. Slowly, I walked up to the woman; careful not to drag my feet as I did when I got nervous. When I was fully in front of her, I held the apple out. She smiled. “You must be Patricia,” she said. Her voice was calm and nice; I couldn’t help but smile back. “Yes, ma’am.” She took the apple from me and walked into the classroom. I looked back at my grandmother, making sure she was still there. “Go on now! Have a great day, sweetie,” she said. I nodded and walked into my new classroom. C.A.T.C.H. The Magazine 2012 49
