CHARLIE HEBDO PORTABLE PAVILION The purpose of design is to emphasize the importance of freedom of speech. When people stand in the distance and see the structure, they would be attracted by the huge white helium balloon immediately. This light balloon would give people a free and positive impression, which is also a super mascot of the pavilion, just like the Rubber Duck. However, when they see the black steel roof which is hung by the balloon close- ly, they would have a rational and limited feeling. Thus, people would be afraid to go inside the pavilion because they may worry that the roof may fall down and cause injure due to the balloon's being break or having air leaks. This sense of tension is simulated by the structure design. It can deliver the similar feeling when the citi- zen’s right of speech is restricted or threaten by the government, terrorist attacks or religious taboos. Also, it is very essential to keep people safe here. Thus, the structure is definitely low-risky with the refined cal- culation of mechanics, people could be totally fairly safe when they are having activities under the pavilion. We believe that this structure could attract more attention and give confidence to people to defend the right of speech. NEWS: THE WAX ART OF AI WEIWEI “If I don’t share my voice, if I don’t act as I believe, then I am dead already.” Ai Weiwei. The famous Chinese artist and human rights activist Ai Weiwei is kidnapped by the Chinese authorities and detained at a secret location. After 81 days of solitary detention, he is finally released to house arrest. Shak- en by the detention, the man the world knows as an unstoppable fighter for freedom of speech is merely a shadow of himself. With a new lawsuit (‘The Fake Case’ of the title) awaiting him and the concrete risk of further imprisonment for his actions, for the first time Weiwei is forced to drastically question his choices. IN BETWEEN ARCHES BACKGROUND: FAST DEVELOPMENT VS SPACIAL MEMORY Shenzhen, one of the fastest-developing cities in China, has changed dramatically in economy and environ- ment in the last 30 years. Most of the population in Shenzhen comes from other cities, they come here for a better life. However, with significant rise in house prices and lack of public space, many people don't get the sense of belonging and instead treat the city as a temporary space. The purpose of design is to offer publicity and spatial memory. The site is located at the beginning of a green area and is close to the sea. The ground floor is fully opened, like a pavilion, offering a 24 -hour semi-public space, which can keep out rain and bright sunlight. The second floor is a cafe and a multi-func- tional hall, with low-iron glass, providing perfect transparency to display the object inside. YANG SHUZHI @ ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION

IN BETWEEN ARCHES Arches are a complex, yet reasonable solution to the building structure, since the structural load decreases as you go up, the number of intersections between floors and arches is reduced. Arches are also an identi- ty and a definition of space, the multi-functional hall is a 25 m long equilateral triangle, enclosed by three arches. STRUCTURAL CONCEPT Change of number of columns Continuity of force transmission Regular columns STRUCTURE CONSTRUCTION Roof Roof Swinging glass doors 1F 100*100 steel columns Ceiling Fixed glass doors Ground Semi-public space 1000*1000 Concrete columns Semi-public space YANG SHUZHI @ ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION

IN BETWEEN ARCHES Seven arches with multiple heights and spans support the two-floor building, mimicking the branches of a tree house. The arch form is lively and unique, providing not only a structural function, but also an iconic feature of the house. In order to support the roof better, there are some mullion-like steel columns, con- cealed in swinging glass doors. To take advantage of the pleasant environment, the second floor is designed as a panorama deck where all the swinging doors can be completely opened. As Shenzhen is a hot and rainy city, the fully opened doors also bring in wind, taking away hot air and supplying fresh air. The deep overhanging eave could provide shade and shelter to adapted to the climate. YANG SHUZHI @ ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION
SOUTH ELEVATION CAFE INDOOR
IN BETWEEN ARCHES The second floor is 5.1m high, reaching the maximum possible height under Shenzhen’s commercial building specifi- cation, offering quite a high space that is capable of adapting to variable function. The first floor is 4.5m high, and the maximum height of the ceiling is 1.5m, which means the space here is much lower than the second floor’s, hence lead to a transformational experience. Because of the open-floor layout, the house offers double the area than it required for emphasis on publicity. A succes- sion of concrete arches connect the upper and lower space sensuously. Semi-public space is the most interesting part to create publicity and spatial memory because it can bring a territorial sense without any behavioral restriction, and it could run well under publicity supervise and the proprietor. The ceiling of the ground floor simulates dynamic stress, like waves of the sea, which could really reflect the sea waves on smooth concrete. CUHK Computational Design Tutorial: Inflatable Structure Surfaces Mesh strips Mesh strips outline Tools: Kangaroo, Kangaroo2, Weavebird, Mesh Edit, Mesh+ 01 MESH TO SURFACE 1. Use “surface from 3 or 4 point” to draw a complex geometry. Make sure all of the surfaces are point-to-point connected. 2. Manually uniform the UV direction of these surfaces by \"analysis direction\". (The UVs of surface affect the direction of the result mesh strips) 3. Divide surfaces into mesh strips Tips: The UV Count would better be the multiple of 2 or 3 for futher combining of strips. 02 RESHAPE THE POINTS ON THE NAKED EDGE 1. Draw the objective curves and move them to coordinate the mesh 2. Use Kangaroo2 to move points on the naked edge to objective curves by setting rest length=0 Tips: For unknown bugs, when we directely adjust the rest length=0 the mesh would explode. So at first we need to reduce the rest lenth times to a small scale (such as 0.2 or 0.3), then reset the Kangaroo, then adjust it to 1. CUHK Computational Design Tutorial: Inflatable Structure Tools: Kangaroo, Kangaroo2, Weavebird, Mesh Edit, Mesh+ 04 STRIPS COMBINING 1. Vertically combine every 2 strips Tips: Be careful with mesh loading order. Use \" Label Face\" of \"Mesh+\" to obeserve the mesh orders, make sure the numbers of mesh in every combining strip are continously 2. Horizontally combine every 3 strips Tips: Because the hyperboloid meshes can't be unrolled to plannar meshes, we need to rebuild combined meshes to single-curvature meshes. A NEW SCENIC CITY YEAR: 2018 LOCATION: Guangzhou, Guangdong, China CHAPTER 1: STATUS: Student Work URBAN SCENARIO PROGRAM: Urban Strategy, Architectural Renovation REN MIN NAN AREA - DOUBLE LEVEL SYSTEM ROLE: All Works CONTEXT 600M The site is located in Guangzhou, China. In a word, this area is dominated by commercial activities, mainly for cloth wholesaling. The New China Tower and the Thirteen Factories Street are the most active places. To its south is the Pearl River, and the Ren Min Nan overpass divides the site to pieces. ISOLATION SITE 600M Isolation is the biggest issue of the site. First, for the city, the site was used to be the icon for trading and tourist resort before 2000. However, because the business shifted from high-end to low-end and the spatial quality decreased, the site is not attractive anymore. People rarely go here except they pass by. The site is a like a isolated island of city only for monotonic commercial activities.. Second, because of the overpass and vehicle driving traffic, the site is not suit for pedestrian now. Not only for visitors, but also for people work there. Pe- destrians are isolated by vehicle driving passes. Third, The pearl riverside is not connected well with the thirteen factories. The two parks - the Cultural Park and the Children Park are disconnected as well. The landscapes, public spaces are isolated. YANG SHUZHI @ THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG (HKU)
