Sunday 19th June 2022 ST GEORGE’S CHURCH Every person complete in Christ - Colossians 1: 28 WELCOME to St George’s International Anglican Church! We are very glad that you have joined us today. If you are simply visiting St George’s we hope that you will leave us having experienced encouragement and challenge from hearing God’s word, praying to him, singing in your heart to him, meeting with him and with his people. If you would like to join us more regularly at St George’s, then please let us know by contacting the office on [email protected] Our website is also helpful www.stgeorges.org.sg Our desire for everyone who attends St George’s is that we will be more mature in Christ than when we arrived. Yours in Christ, Ian Hadfield THE COLLECT FOR FOR 1ST SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY SUNDAY O God, the strength of all those who put their trust in you, mercifully accept our prayers and, because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without you, grant us the help of your grace, that in the keeping of your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AMEN. 1

Devotion from Titus 3 Good works. A broken society needs them to right the wrongs around. Healthy societies thrive because of them. So, what is good work? And how do we arrive at something that is truly good? Titus 3 shows us that it all begins and ends with the gospel. Verse 3 describes the sinful, human nature in its entirety. It isn’t pretty. But that’s what Paul says that he, the Cretans, and us too – that’s what we once were like. And if we were like that, then there is absolutely no capacity for good within us. And yet, it was when we were sinful that we see the good news of the gospel reaching out to us through the cross. The goodness and loving kindness of God aren’t just concepts. They appeared when Jesus came to this earth and in His mercy, saved us from our own sinfulness. The gospel is good news. It models the good that we need to first know and enables us to do the good work that we were saved to do. We see the good news of the gospel being worked out in the lives we live in the world (v. 1-2). In the posture we adopt and in our presence in the world, we are called to be witnesses to the power of the gospel working in our lives. How might that look like for you today? How might you live a life that reflects the gospel’s work in your life? 2

We also see the good news being worked out in the church (v. 9- 11). The church needs to keep the main thing the main thing. The gospel and no other must be front and centre. How can we support that here at St. George’s? This is important, and I encourage you to think it through. Because through the lives we live, and the church’s unity on the truth of the gospel, we will see change in society around us. Blessings, Asher Chua 3

TITUS 3:1-15 1 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, 2 to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone. 3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. 4

9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. 10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. 11 You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self- condemned. 12 As soon as I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, because I have decided to winter there. 13 Do everything you can to help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way and see that they have everything they need. 14 Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives. 15 Everyone with me sends you greetings. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. 5

LUKE 8:26-39 26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places. 30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. 32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. 6

34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon- possessed man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him. 7

Thank you for the generous way that you have been giving to St George's Mission Partners, especially during the difficult times that COVID-19 has brought. Unfortunately, due to changes in the Singapore Charities Commission, Singapore Anglican Churches can no longer send money on behalf of individual Church Members or church groups who donate to specific Mission Partners. Church Members or groups will need to donate directly. St George's Website https://www.stgeorges.org.sg/outreach- partners-list lists the Mission Partners' websites for your easy individual/group donating. 39

St George's Mission Committee will: 1) receive 20% of offertories then distribute to St George's Mission Partners (Local and International) 2) receive donations for general missions (on top of the 20%) and distribute to St George's Mission Partners (Local and International) 3) distribute money donated according to St George's policies to Local and International Partners. 4) tell the church membership about financial needs but are not allowed to specifically ask for financial donations. Despite the above making it more difficult to donate, please continue to be generous as God has been generous to you. 40
