ANTI-BULLYING ARTICLE by Yara sameh and Yara ismael As bullying rose to become this alarming issue in every school, workplace. college, homes, or even in the streets it was important to unite communities’ hand in hand to fight this enemy and banish these dark clouds from the minds of both the victim and the bully. That was when Anti-bullying awareness campaigns handled this mission. Organized by different non-profit organizations which are supervised and managed by UNICEF through different lectures, seminars, public speeches conveying the important message of love and acceptance across the globe. Not to forget the great role social media, TV ads and other advertising platforms played, delivering the message of understanding from videos, posts, sharing real-life stories to hosting public figures and famous personas raising awareness among their fan base and people listening to them. Still, how can we participate in this magnificent movement to stop bullying? by organizing different support groups, therapy discussion sessions for the victims and even the bully, addressing the issue in schools to teachers and at home to parents. As well as colleges and workplaces. All these actions aim to plant the seeds of acceptance, equality, and happiness among societies. 8

ANTI-BULLYING ARTICLE by Yara sameh and Yara ismael For most people, it’s easy to imagine bullying taking place on a playground, in a school cafeteria, or a locker room. The common assumption is that bullying is limited to the scope of grade school. Among kids of the same age or at least the same age group, most are thought of as harmless pranks and jokes between them. The reality that bullying is so dark and twisted. It’s a dark cloud of smoke and dust that spreads everywhere through school, college, work. Knocking every door spreading hate and acting as a double-sided blade hurting and harming all parties involved. As bullying became a rising issue that affects adults and children everywhere, anti-bullying awareness campaigns rose to fight this new disease teaching the bully about the dreadful consequences of their action. and those getting bullied get to know their importance and value, teaching them how to dodge a bullet and rise again. I believe bullying can only be described as the misuse of power and arrogance. It’s the behavior of which a person can hurt or frighten someone younger and less powerful. Focusing on the weakness and insecurities of others. Which often forces that victim to do things against their will or lower their self-esteem all of which can transfer the poor victim of bullying to a dark place of depression, anxiety and doubtful self-image, panic disorders, suicidal thinking or behavior, and agoraphobia (fear of open spaces, crowds, or situations that may be difficult to escape from). These problems started from early school age and persisted through young adulthood, that doesn’t leave the bully unaffected although they might think this endless poison, they give to others won’t affect them, or even they might think that they gain satisfaction, confidence, or even a good laugh by hurting others. To them, it’s a brutal display of power and leverage. However, bullying is a double-edged sword It traps dark, negative thoughts of weakness and self-doubt within the bully turning them into hating monsters that feel the need to hurt others and take out on them all the trapped negativity. They take bullying as a method to feed their ego, a way to show their desire for dominance, and their inability to accept others. This leads to an increase in the risk of developing antisocial personality disorder (described as a lack of empathy, lying, and criminal behavior). Earlier studies have shown that as bullies grow up, they tend to have more problems holding down jobs, more problems in relationships, more issues with drugs and alcohol, and are more 10

likely to have police records. EXPLORE YOUR LIBRARY Library supervisor: Abdullrahman Hegazy INTRODUCTION NGU Libraries provides its services through two branches: Health library at building A and Social Sciences Library at building B. The first, serves schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry, whereas the latter serves schools of Business, Economics, and Political science. Sooner, another branch will be operating, to primarily serve schools of Information Technology, Pharmacy, Dentistry. Collaboratively, the libraries’ collection encompasses around 2,000 books in the offered fields of study at the university. Moreover, there is enough capacity, about 100 seats, in both libraries to accommodate concurrent users. Nonetheless, the libraries are operated by highly skilled librarians and information professionals who diligently serve the university community. Finally, within a wide range of services such as circulation, internal reading, information inquiry, E-resources, open access, information literacy, etc., the libraries try to satisfy their faculty and students’ information needs. Starting this newsletter issue, the library will either choose a specific service or controversial topic to tackle in each upcoming issue. Hence, below are the online services that are provided by the NGU libraries. 12

Online Services: Not only the university libraries are physically accessible, but also virtually approachable. This is to ease the use of library services for the university community. Included but not limited to the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) and The Egyptian Knowledge Bank (EKB). 1- OPAC: The Online Public Access Catalogue often abbreviated as OPAC or simply library catalog, is a database that includes all bibliographic data of the resources that are held in the NGU libraries. It allows users to search for the books and other housed materials at the libraries so that they can physically locate the needed item by the call number. And check whether the item is available at the library. The call number is explicitly listed in the search results and the item page on the OPAC. Consequently, users can either borrow the books they found or read them inside the library. To visit the NGU Libraries OPAC, please scan this QR code. 2- Egyptian Knowledge Bank: It is a national initiative that has been launched by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi during the National Science Day of 2014. EKB is considered the world’s largest digital library granting limitless resources, exclusively created for Egyptian citizens. To be able to use the EKB portal, users are required to register by their national identification number. While registration, there are four sub-portals that users must opt one of them according to their appropriate affiliation. As a result, NGU faculty and students would choose the Academic sub-portal that grants them access to all academic resources as well as the other sub-portals. They are as follows: • Browse resources by Publishers • Browse by resource types (e-journal, eBook, Thesis, etc.) • Browse the available resources alphabetically. • Keyword federated search (simple and advanced search) 14

AADWBRUUASGRENESS Substance abuse is a serious problem that affects not only physical health but also mental health. Many of us are familiar with how substance abuse affects our physical health; however, we seem to neglect its impact on mental health. Addictive drugs like heroin and even nonaddictive ones like cannabis can trigger many mental health diseases like depression and psychosis which require an environmental factor to activate them. Many people get mental diseases like depression after taking the substance, and they believe that the substance they are taking is their only way to cope with depression; however, the depression that they experience could likely be caused by their substance intake and thus the cycle of addiction starts. For instance, they feel depressed, so they take more substances which eventually leads to more depression and so on. Sadly, diseases that are triggered by taking substances are chronic and can be activated with a single intake, so even if the drug was discontinued, treatment for the onset disease will still be required. All in all, Substance abuse can trigger many Mental and physical diseases. Drug addiction is not the only consequence of substance abuse. Substance abuse can cause chronicdiseases that affect the quality of life. Hopefully, the prevention of substance abuse can prevent the onset of these diseases. 16

TEN THINGS YOU CAN DO F INTRODUCTION An important part of keeping fit and healthy is to take care of your own mental health, try these tips to keep your balance, or re-balance yourself. Value yourself: Treat yourself with kindness and respect and avoid self-criticism. Make time for your hobbies and favorite projects or broaden your horizons. Do a daily crossword puzzle, plant a garden, take dance lessons, learn to play an instrument or become fluent in another language. Take care of your body: Taking care of yourself physically can improve your mental health. Be sure to: · Eat nutritious meals. · Avoid cigarettes. · Drink plenty of water. · Exercise, which helps decrease depression and anxiety and improve moods. · Get enough sleep. Researchers believe that lack of sleep contributes to a high rate of depression in college students. Surround yourself with good people: People with strong family or social connections are generally healthier than those who lack a support network. Make plans with supportive family members and friends or seek out activities where you can meet new people, such as a club, class or support group. Give yourself: Volunteer your time and energy to help someone else. You’ll feel good about doing something tangible to help someone in need and it’s a great way to meet new people. Learn how to deal with stress: Like it or not, stress is a part of life. Practice good coping skills: Try One- Minute Stress Strategies, do Tai Chi, exercise, take a nature walk, play with your pet or try journal writing as a stress reducer. Also, remember to smile and see the humor in life. Research shows that laughter can boost your immune system, ease pain, relax your body and reduce stress.

FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH Quiet your mind: Try meditating, Mindfulness and/or prayer. Relaxation exercises and prayer can improve your state of mind and outlook on life. In fact, research shows that meditation may help you feel calm and enhance the effects of therapy. Set realistic goals: Decide what you want to achieve academically, professionally and personally, and write down the steps you need to realize your goals. Aim high but be realistic and don’t over- schedule. You’ll enjoy a tremendous sense of accomplishment and self-worth as you progress toward your goal. Break up the monotony: Although our routines make us more efficient and enhance our feelings of security and safety, a little change of pace can perk up a tedious schedule. Alter your jogging route, plan a road-trip, take a walk in a different place, hang some new pictures or try a new restaurant. Avoid alcohol and other drugs: Keep alcohol use and avoid other drugs. Sometimes people use alcohol and other drugs to “self-medicate” but, alcohol and other drugs only aggravate problems. Get help when you need it: Seeking help is a sign of strength not a weakness. And it is important to remember that treatment is effective.
