You never stop learning We specialise in helping riders develop and improve their riding skills. Especially those who are just starting out on the journey of advancing their riding skills for their own safety. We can train you to a higher level which means taking an advanced motorcycle test. This is usually done with a police or ex-police advanced assessor. But the whole point of advancing your skills is to improve, become a better rider and ultimately enjoy your riding a lot more. Afterall nobody wants to become a statistic and every rider wants to get home in one piece. There is absolutely nothing wrong with feeling a little bit scared or frightened, every rider has felt like that at some point in their journey. Some stay like it for a long time, whilst others do something about it very early in their riding career. Everyone looks up to the police riders skills and ability level. But you must understand this did not happen overnight, they have been through a very rigid training regime and undergo thorough guidance and coaching over many years. This is what makes them stand out from the crowd, it’s nothing to do with luck, it’s all about learned skills and development during their training. Advancing your skills Advanced Motorcycle We have a number of different training Training in courses that are designed for people with specific needs. Bear in mind these courses the UK are just names and in essence advancing your motorcycle riding skills is further training regardless of what it is called. Advanced Rider Training is the term used by all training organisations. Where you personally fit on the scale of learning depends on your ability and knowledge at the time you undergo coaching. If you are just starting out, you won’t have much knowledge or understanding of the changes that are required. However after a few professional-led sessions you’ll start to see changes to your riding style. You will see a huge improvement to your riding in a short space of training. The learning curve is quite steep to start with as you learn new skills and techniques. The time frame in which it takes to improve is really down to you and how many miles you can put in between training sessions. While you are learning you must practise the new information to set the skills you have been taught. Going back to your old way of riding between training sessions will elongate the learning process. This also means that you won’t make the necessary changes to really elevate your riding skills. You must have an open mind and be willing to change how you ride right now. Taking you to a higher level Below is a list of names of the post-test training we deliver. You can take your pick on the one/s that suit you best, get in touch once you have selected Take Control Course Take Control is a West Mercia Police initiative to keep riders in our counties (Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin) safer on our roads. This is basic advanced training and takes you through 5 main areas where riders often make mistakes and suffer the consequences. This is a one day course, we teach vision and planning, cornering, overtaking and braking techniques. Because it is a subsidised course, you only pay £50 and the balance is paid for you by local authority. This is a great way to start your journey into advanced riding. Take Control of you, your bike and your own riding! DVSA Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS) The DVSA government initiative called ERS (Enhanced Rider Scheme). It is a really good starting point to develop your skills. This is still advanced motorcycle training despite its name. The level that we train you to depends on your riding skills. But if you want a certificate to prove you have done some advanced training, this would be an ideal starting point. There are a number of Core Modules that must be covered. The DVSA recommendation is at least one day, but in our experience we cannot make much impact in a day. Our courses are generally over three days. We encourage you to spread them out so that you can have practice time in between training sessions. Post Test & Advanced | Everything you need to know 6
ERS Extra Modules The ERS course has Extra Modules (in bold) that you can do. Some can be completed by us but you’ll need to go to specialist organisations for some of them. If you want to do a course for accident management for example you’d need to enroll on a Biker Down course. Likewise if you want to ride in alternative environments, you could use Yamaha Off-Road Training or California Superbike School for your track guidance. We deliver Group Riding guidance and training, something that we feel is very important for all riders who ride with their friends (sometimes with strangers). Everyone in a group has a responsibility to themselves and other riders. Riding abroad can be daunting, but we have a solution for first time riders abroad and those with a bit more adventure in them. We deliver bespoke advanced training abroad with small groups of riders. This entails using sat navs and route planning, along with carrying a passenger or load. Refresher Training Refresher training is for riders who have had a long break from riding or are just riding around without having had any further guidance. Sometimes just refreshing the basic skills are required and a health check certainly doesn’t do any harm. Someone who is returning back to biking after a long time off may need some coaching to reacquaint themselves with riding modern bikes. The term ‘born again biker’ usually means that someone has ridden in their youth and has just come back to it after a long break. If you have never done any skill advancement training before then you should start with this course or with the Take Control Course. If you want to develop for your own personal satisfaction this is where you should start. Post Test & Advanced | Everything you need to know 7
Advanced Training Contrary to common belief there are no different levels of advanced training, it all depends on your riding ability. If you have just started off learning advanced skills, you will need to learn, understand and start to apply the basics. This will be a great foundation to your future riding style. Once you understand the new system of controlling yourself and your machine, you will start to develop your skills and technique further. If you only want to do it for yourself to improve your skill level, that’s great but you can progress to taking an advanced motorcycle test. The Institute of Advanced Motorists and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents have advanced assessors. They are normally police or ex-police riders or trainers. To become a member of one of the charity organisations mentioned, you would be expected to be a participating member of the organisation to go through a training programme. It means you’d need to turn up regularly and be an active member, you’d then be expected to give something back at the end of the process. This is not for everyone, so a few professionally paid training days per year might fill your training gap and give you the skills you need to maintain or elevate your riding skills. Gaining an advanced riding certificate after being tested is a great achievement. Less than 1% of riders actually bother to uplift their skills with further education, so you’d be in the minority if you decided to take an advanced test. We can train you to this level and you could take your test independently, instead of joining a local group. Post Test & Advanced | Everything you need to know 8
Slow Control For most riders this is their achilles heel, it is the least liked riding discipline and normally avoided at all costs. But how good or rubbish are you? Do you feel like you’re going to drop the bike at awkward junctions, or feel nervous when in a crowded car park? Do you hate the thought of being watched or judged if you make a mistake? Only you know how you really feel about your own skills, most people try to hide it and hope it goes away. But it doesn’t, it festers and creates anxiety. If you want to improve these skills, we have a detailed training programme that will help you to develop your slow riding skills. I have written books and articles on how to improve and develop your own personal slow riding skills. A few simple exercises will eliminate all that stress. Motorcycle Riders Hub have monthly training sessions with their Advanced Advisors. They are only £60 per day (members only) and will elevate your riding skills to new levels. Enroll on a couple of Slow Control Days to see huge benefits. Slow control training with Simon Post Test & Advanced | Everything you need to know 9
Advanced Training Tours Abroad Simon & friends en route to Istanbul The pinnacle of our training has to be the Advanced Training Tours abroad. They are now run by our sister company Motorcycle Riders Hub. We would encourage you to be a member as you get 10% off all tour costs. They are a great way to enhance and develop your riding skills over a short period of time. You’ll be riding every day and will put in many more miles than you are probably used to. But the upside to that is, you’ll be riding with like minded people who want to uplift their skills. We hold your hand every step of the way if you are new to touring. We give you a full itinerary, take care of everything for you and give you advanced coaching throughout the whole trip. We suggest for newcomers that you start with a France tour. This is a small trip to break you in gently and then you could progress to a bigger tour to Portugal or further afield when they are available. Our tours have included trips to France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Croatia and Montenegro, Poland to Auschwitz and the Alps. Build up your skills and knowledge in the security that you are with well seasoned tourers with extensive experience. We don’t just give you a good time, we teach, train, help and provide a solid foundation for your future riding. Post Test & Advanced | Everything you need to know 10
Blood Biker If you want to become a Blood Biker, you will need to do an advanced motorcycle test. Some National Association of Blood Bikes (NABB) accept the ERS pass certificate. Failing that, you will need to undergo training and then take one of the other advanced riding tests. This is to prove you ride at a satisfactory standard inline with the NABB guidelines. It is a thoroughly rewarding thing to do and give something back to your local community. You could be helping to save lives and as it is voluntary, they are always looking for new recruits. We can help you become an advanced rider in order for you to be ready to join.
