SPRING 2021 / 7 Yiannis Krikis “You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved. Ansel Adams The above phrase perfectly expresses Yiannis’ philosophy for the photography. He was born in Thessaloniki in 1958, studied mechanical and electrical engineering at the TEI (Technologi- cal Education Institute) of Thessaloniki and at the Aristotle University. He has been involved with the photography since 1978. Worked as a professional photographer as a member of the “Studio Ikona” from 1989 to 2002. SPRING 2021 / 9 HOPE The image of the inscription ELPIS (the Greek word for hope) on a wooden boat that is declining but still exists was the reason to see from their optimistic side the photos of the series that was the subject of a solo exhibition in Thessaloniki in 2016. The photos were taken in their vast majority during the first years of the crisis (2010-2015).

SPRING 2021 / 21 PARADISES Driving to the countryside, you constantly come across them. Places that are made for the recreation of the locals and especially the adults. Their aesthetic is often indifferent, or exaggerated and is dictated by the basic purpose for which they were constructed (sex, alcohol consumption and entertainment). These buildings, after some time of usage, are usually left abandoned, reminiscent of failed business attempts, or reflecting the shifts of the preferences of the local communities.

SPRING 2021 / 45 VISUAL COMMENTS Modern politics that is moving in blurred landscapes with guidance beyond hu- man desires and needs, with nonexistent speech in front of old symbols. Routes through deserts to unspecified targets. Tiny people in front of nature, lonely and alienated selling memories, searching entertainment and desires that con- stantly declines. This project is my attempt to find symbolisms for life, politics, society and be- haviors in my photographs.
