UNIT 1ANIMALS ELEPHANT Elephants are the largest land animals in the world. There are two types of elephants - Asian elephants and African elephants. Among these two types, African elephants are the largest living land elephants. Both female and male African elephants have tusks but only male Asian elephants have tusks. CAMEL A camel may have two humps or one hump. Its hump stores fat. Its fat changes into energy in scarcity of food and water. The Bactrian camel has two humps. It is a huge camel that can grow to over seven feet tall and over eleven feet long. GIRAFFE A giraffe is the tallest animal on earth. A new born giraffe is about 6 feet tall at birth and weighs about 68 kilograms. A fully grown giraffe stands 16 to 20 feet tall. 4 BOOK THREE

BLUE WHALE The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth. It is so large that its heart is almost the size of a car. The biggest recorded blue whale was a female in the Antarctic Ocean that was 30.5 m long (more than 3.5 times the length of a double-decker bus). The seal is a sea mammal. SEAL It has fins as feet. It eats fish and other sea animals. It has thick fur and blubber that offer protection against freezing temperatures. FROG A frog lives both on land and in water. It has webbed feet to help it swim. A baby frog is called a tadpole. A tadpole looks more like a fish than a frog. It has a long finned tail that disappears when it becomes a frog. HUMMING BIRD 5 Humming birds are the smallest birds. They are as small as our small finger. In fact, some humming birds are almost the size of a bee. They are only the birds that can fly backwards. They can flap wings 90 times in a second. BOOK THREE

PENGUIN Penguins are flightless birds. They stay in cold places. You can find a penguin in Antarctica. Penguins have webbed feet which help them to swim. They also use their flippers to swim. They are carnivores. They eat fish, squid, krill, shrimp and other sea animals. SPIDER Spiders are found in every continent of the world except Antarctica. They are not insects. Insects have three body parts and six legs. Spiders have eight legs and two body parts, the abdomen and the thorax. Spiders do not have antennae while insects do. KOALA A koala carries its baby in its pouch like a kangaroo. A koala mother usually gives birth to one joey at a time. A newborn koala is only the size of a jelly bean. Koalas are native to Australia. JELLY FISH A jellyfish has no brain, no eyes, no ears and no heart. Its body has 90% water. It has an opening in its body. It eats and discards waste from this opening. 6 BOOK THREE

OSTRICH The ostrich is the largest living bird, and lays the biggest egg. Its egg weighs almost 1400 gm. It has a long neck, and a strong beak. Its large body is covered with feathers. It has small wings. It cannot fly but it can run as fast as a car. Its speed is 40 miles per an hour. RHINOCEROS The rhinoceros is most famous for its large horn or horns. Some types of rhinos have two horns and some have one horn. In Nepal, one horned rhinos are found. They are hunted for their horns. OWL Owls are nocturnal animals. So they are active at night. Most owls hunt insects, small mammals and other birds. Owls can turn their heads as much as 270 degrees. BOOK THREE 7

WOODPECKER The woodpecker is found all over the world except Australia. It eats mainly insects, which it gets by tapping the wood of trees with its bill. It is able to peck 20 times per second. Its feet have 4 toes, two facing forward and two backward. GRASSHOPPER Grasshoppers can fly, walk and even jump. They destroy crops. Male grasshoppers will make a singing sound by rubbing a hind leg against one of their hard fore wings. HIPPO The hippo is the world's third largest land animal after the elephant and the rhino. Hippos are herbivores and eat mostly grass. At dusk, hippos come out of water. A hippo may eat up to 68 kilograms of grass a night. BALD EAGLE The bald eagle is the second-largest bird of prey. It is the national bird of the United States of America. It is clearly recognized by its white head, brown body, and hooked yellow beak. Bald eagles are found in North America. 8 BOOK THREE

DOLPHIN The dolphin is one of the most playful and intelligent animals on our planet. Even though dolphins spend their lives in the water, they are not fish, but are mammals. Like all mammals, dolphins give birth to live young ones and nurse them with milk. Dolphins can not breathe under water like fish, but need to come to the surface to breath air. HORSE Horses have a good sense of memory. If you have been with the same horse for a long time, it will understand you better. Horses have excellent senses including good hearing, eyesight, and a tremendous sense of balance. KANGAROO You can find a kangaroo in Australia. It has powerful hind legs, a long, strong tail, and small front legs. It can leap some 30 feet in a single bound, and travel more than 48 kilometers per hour. A kangaroo’s baby is called a joey. A new-born joey is just one inch long at birth, or about the size of a grape. BOOK THREE 9

UNIT 2PLANTS RAFFLESIA The rafflesia is the world’s largest flower. It is found in Indonesia. It is as big as a truck wheel. It is about 1 meter wide and weighs up to 11 kg. It smells like rotten eggs. CACTUS The cactus grows in hot, dry places. Most cactus plants have no leaves at all. They have spikes instead of leaves. VENUS FLYTRAP Plants that eat insects are called carnivorous plants. Venus Flytrap is a carnivorous plant that traps and eats insects. 22 BOOK THREE

COCONUT The coconut is a useful plant. Almost all its parts are useful. The trunk is used to make furniture. We get oil from coconut fruit. Coconut fibre can be woven into ropes and mats. The hard coconut shell is used to make bowls and cups. Coconut water is a refreshing drink. BAMBOO The bamboo is the fastest growing plant. It can grow up to 3 feet in height in one day. The bamboo is actually a kind of grass. Bamboo shoots are eaten in many countries. We call them tama. The panda’s main food includes bamboo shoots and leaves. Some bamboo trees are used to make paper. RHODODENDRON Rhododendrons are found in different colours. They can be white, orange, golden, red, crimson red, pink or purple. Most types of rhododendrons produce fragrant flowers. The crimson red rhododendron is the national flower of Nepal. BOOK THREE 23

APPLE TREE Apples are the fruit from apple trees. Apple trees are large if grown from seeds, but small if grafted onto roots (rootstock). Apple farming in Nepal started in Kali Gandaki valley before 1960. MANGO TREE The mango is known as the ‘king of fruit’. It is the national fruit of India. It is the national tree of Bangladesh. In several cultures, its fruit and leaves are ritually used in religious ceremonies. SNAPDRAGON FLOWER Snapdragon flowers resemble a dragon. If you squeeze the sides, the dragon’s mouth will appear to open and close. 24 BOOK THREE

SUICIDE PALM The suicide palm is a gigantic palm. It lives for about 50 years, then flowers only once, and dies soon after. PINE TREE The pine tree is a member of the big tree family known as conifers. There are around 115 species of pines. Pine trees are best known for their pine cones and lovely evergreen needles. NEEM TREE The neem tree is a medicinal plant. Its parts are used to make different kinds of medicines. Neem twigs are used to brush teeth and neem leaves are eaten by many to cure digestion problems. Neem soap is used to cure skin diseases. BOOK THREE 25

JELLYFISH TREE The jellyfish tree was thought to be extinct, until it was rediscovered in the 1970s. It may have got its name from its fruit. It looks like a jellyfish when broken open. BASEBALL PLANT The baseball plant has exactly the same shape as that of a baseball. It has no branches and its average height is 20 cm. LITHOP A lithop looks like stones or pebbles. It is also called a living stone. It is mainly found in South Africa. VICTORIA AMAZONICA Victoria amazonica is a species of flowering plant. It is a kind of water lily. It has very large leaves, up to 3 metres in diameter and 7 to 8 metres in length. 26 BOOK THREE

STRAWBERRY The average strawberry has 200 seeds. It’s the only fruit that bears its seeds on the outside. SUNFLOWER A sunflower looks like one large flower, but each head is composed of hundreds of tiny flowers called florets, which ripen to become the seeds. ONION When an onion is chopped, it releases a chemical that makes the eyes bitter. TOUCH ME NOT The touch me not or mimosa pudica is a sensitive plant. The most interesting thing about this plant is that its leaves fold up at night as well as by touch. BOOK THREE 27

UNIT 3GAMES AND SPORTS FOOTBALL Football is also known as soccer. It is played between two teams. Each team has 11 players. The players have to score a goal by kicking the ball in the opponent’s team’s goalpost with any parts of the body other than the arms and the hands. The World Cup Football is the biggest soccer tournament in the world. It is held every four years in a different country. CRICKET Cricket is the most popular bat-and-ball game. A match is played between two teams. Each team has eleven players. One team fields/bowls while the other team is the batting side. Each team takes its turn to bat, attempting to score runs, while the other team fields/bowls. The team which scores more runs is the winner. When a batsman scores 100 runs, it called a century. BASKETBALL Basketball is a team game played on a court by two opposing teams of 5 players. Each team scores a point by shooting the ball through the opponent’s basket. Basketball was first played by a soccer ball. Later it was changed in 1929. 38 BOOK THREE

VOLLEYBALL Volleyball is a unique team sport. It began in the United States. It was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan. It is played by two teams of six players. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team’s court. TENNIS Tennis is played with a racket and a rubber ball. It is an Olympic sport. When this game is played individually against a single opponent, it is called singles. When it is played between two teams of two players each, it is called doubles. Each player strikes the ball with a racket to send it into the opponent's court. GOLF Golf is a ball sport. A player of golf is called a golfer who uses a long thin metal stick called a club to hit the ball into a hole. The modern golf ball is made of rubber with a hard covering. There are more than three hundred dimples in one golf ball. BADMINTON Badminton is a popular game. It is played with a racket and a shuttlecock. It can be played in a badminton court or indoors. It can be played by two players or by four players, forming two teams each with two players. The badminton net divides the court into half. BOOK THREE 39

BOXING Boxing is also called the game of self- defense. It is a fighting sport in which players throw punches at each other, usually wearing gloves in their hands. Legends like Muhammad Ali and Jack Johnson have brought worldwide fame to the sport. WRESTLING Wrestling is one of the oldest forms of combat. It is a physical competition between two competitors. The two most common styles of wrestling are Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling. In Greco-Roman style, it is forbidden to hold the opponent below the belt. Freestyle allows the use of the wrestler’s or his opponent’s legs in offense and defence. Table tennis is a racket sport. It is one of the most popular sports. It is also called ping pong. It is a sport which is played on a table. Two or four players hit a tennis ball back and forth using a table tennis bat. It was originated in England during the 19th century. TABLE TENNIS 40 BOOK THREE Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport. It is known as the national pastime of the United States. It is played between two teams of nine players. Each team takes turns batting and fielding. BASEBALL

BULLFIGHTING Bullfighting is a traditional sport in Spain, Portugal, and Mexico. Many people are against of this game as it is very dangerous and is taken as the cruelty to bulls. POLO Polo is a team sport played between two teams. Each team has four players who ride on horseback. The players use long mallets to drive a small plastic or wooden ball into the opposing team’s goal. SUMO WRESTLING Sumo wrestling is a wrestling sport. It is a traditional style wrestling. It was originated in Japan. The goal of this game is to move the opponent out of the ring and force him to touch the ground with anything other than the soles of the feet. A sumo wrestler is called a Rikishi. KABADDI Kabaddi is a 4,000 year old game. It is the national game of Bangladesh. It is also played in India and Nepal. In Bangladesh, the game is known as Hadudu. Olympics The Olympic Games are international sports competitions. Athletes from different countries take part in this event. The Olympic motto is Citius, Altius, Fortius. They are Latin words which mean ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’. The Olympic Games are held once every four years. The Olympic flame is lit at the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Olympic Creed The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part; just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well. 42 BOOK THREE

The Rings The Olympic emblem was originally designed in 1912 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, co-founder of the modern Olympic Games. The Olympic emblem has five interlocking rings with five different colours. The top three rings are blue, black and red; and the bottom two rings are yellow and green. These five colours have been chosen because at least one of these colours is there on every country’s flag. The five rings also represent the five parts of the world (North and South America are considered one area, along with Africa, Australia, Asia and Europe).
