A Message From Our Board President A Time to Change For everything there is a season. A time to change. The YWCA of Westmoreland County has been undergoing change - a change in management, a change in how the employees of the YWCA function, making way for increased productivity. New hires, providing continuity, professionalism, and increased work flow management. These changes are necessary as we begin to look at our current programs offered, allowing for clearer vision and broadening our optics as we consider new programing that meets our mission and serves our community in a strategic manner. We at the YWCA consider ourselves change agents in the Westmoreland County community. However, to make change, we must continue achieving a high level of visibility in the community and heighten the awareness of those we serve, so that the organization can have continued success and increase our outreach. At the national level, the YWCA is mission driven and many of our advocacy programs address issues such as economic justice, racial justice, civil injustice, voting rights, equal pay and fair housing, and child care/preschool programs where we are not a holding place for youngsters but rather a place of learning, preparing, and empowering the bright minds of the next generation for kindergarten. Our strong collective voice can become even stronger as we strive to advocate on a national level. Working together, we can influence public policies that address health care, police brutality, voting rights, etc. As we enter this spring, a time of rebirth, I challenge us all to renew our efforts to increase our membership, to advocate strongly for what we believe, to be effective change agents in our efforts, and to always be great ambassadors for the YWCA Westmoreland County. Our mission is strong: YWCA Westmoreland County is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. The YWCA is on the move and we encourage all to move with us as we advocate for the marginalized, disenfranchised women and children in this community. Enjoy this season of change. Kind regards, Norma Skillings Norma Skillings, Board President 3

A Message From Our Executive Director Have you ever heard that saying “you look like you lost your best friend?” In April 2018, I literally did just that. One Sunday afternoon, I received a phone call from my best friend’s husband. He told me she had just finished making lunch, said she felt strange, then slumped over unconscious. An hour later, she was gone, having suffered a pontine stroke at age 36 – no family history, no prior symptoms, no reason to think it would happen. In the months that followed, I sunk deeply into grief, feeling my world had ended. For years, I spent every Saturday afternoon with Rhiannon, five to eight-hour shopping trips all over the county as we pursued our favorite hobby: extreme couponing. Rhiannon was a once-in-a-lifetime friend. To know her was to love her – she was patient and kind, tolerant and accepting of all people and walks of life, lover of children and animals, and had a zany-gut-buster-I-can’t-breathe-because-I’m- laughing-so-hard sense of humor. Suddenly and without warning, a person that I loved deeply and relied on for emotional support simply disappeared. Afterwards, I prayed frequently for understanding which didn’t come until much later. I thought my life would never be the same. Five months later, I accepted the executive director position at the YWCA. When I began working here, very much still entrenched in grief, I did my best not to show it. What happened in the months to follow was nothing short of a miracle. I began to meet our staff, our volunteers, our board members, our members, and other stakeholders in the community. I met all kinds of women – smart, strong, and vibrant. I made so many friends in such a short period of time, almost effortlessly. I regret Rhiannon did not live to see this change in my life – she would have loved the mission and likely have started volunteering in some capacity. Author Joseph Campbell once said, “We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.” While I will miss Rhiannon forever, I realize now that a sizable portion of my grief was fueled by my refusal to let go of the past as well as the future I had planned. I always envisioned the two of us outliving our husbands, well in our 90s, two little old ladies walking down the grocery aisles propping each other up as we couponed – in fact, we used to joke about that. That future no longer exists, but where I had emptiness a year ago, I now have abundance beyond what I could have imagined. That’s part of the magic of the YWCA. Despite any troubles, sorrows, or losses in your life, please know that renewal is always possible. But you cannot do it alone. We all need people around us who understand, help us celebrate the good times, and keep us uplifted during the bad. The YWCA exists for that purpose, to give women a place to meet such individuals, and for women to discover and know they have personal power that can be wielded in their own lives as well as for the greater good. We are here to serve you, to help you be the best version of yourself, and to be your companion through the joys and sorrows. Let us be part of your journey! If you’ve not connected with us beyond our newsletter, I encourage you to get to know us better! You can take a class to learn something new, attend the monthly International Women or Tech4Good Westmoreland meetup groups, or load your friends up in the car and have a fun afternoon of shopping at our Thrift Shop! We also have numerous committees on which you can volunteer, or you could even serve on our board of directors. We are always in need of volunteers at our Thrift Shop (and boy, can they throw a party at their volunteer appreciation luncheons!). Regardless of how you connect, I guarantee you will meet some of the most interesting women ever and leave with a new friend or two! I hope to see you around the YWCA sometime this spring or summer! Here’s to spring 2019 and all the promise of rebirth and regeneration this season of the year brings! Yours in service, Cindy Leonard Cindy Leonard, Executive Director 4

Remembering Reta Kuyat Reta Kuyat Eulogy Presented by Bonnie Lewis YWCA Executive Director 1989 - 2013 Many of us see something that could make our community better and really WISH that things could change. Far fewer of us are willing or able to make the leap from wishing to be the change agent that turns wishing into meaningful change. Rita Kuyat was one of those people. When Reta came to Greensburg she got involved in her community, but found that she really missed her involvement with the YWCA of Johnstown. So she took it upon herself to gather a group of women together, to contact the YWCA USA, and to build enthusiasm and organization for establishing a YWCA in Greensburg. Fast forward fifty years. Today we see an organization that:  provides childcare for working families,  teaches English as a second language and providing women from 30-some countries a home away from home,  teaches a wide variety of technology & continuing education classes,  provides work ready clothing from our Thrift Shop to women seeking employment,  involves the organization in matters of Racial Justice, and the list goes on and on. This is Reta’s legacy to Westmoreland County. It’s a very big legacy indeed. For the 24 years I worked at the YWCA, I always loved the times I spent with her. I think that all of us felt blessed to have our founding leader at YWCA events when she was able. I especially enjoyed her frequent little notes and phone calls, and in turn the staff enjoyed contacting her especially about the history of the YWCA. The day that Reta Kuyat came to Greensburg, was a good day indeed. 5

Childcare YWCA Preschool News! The United Way came to preschool in early spring to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday by reading the story Green Eggs and Ham to the children. They gave each child a backpack containing the story book and art supplies and donated a Dr. Seuss collection of books to the classroom. This spring is all about changes. We are watching the weather change from winter to spring and waiting to enjoy our outdoor playground. We are watching caterpillars change into butterflies. We are watching seeds grow into marigolds and beanstalks. We are watching the children grow into their own unique individuals. As we say a heartfelt good-bye to our four-year-old graduating classes, we will be watching for great things from each of them. Fall enrollment for 2019-2020 school year is now open.
