SSRVM Magazine NOV 2022 Bengaluru East “JAI GURU DEV” The Bhagavad Gita caters to the entire range of human evolution. It stands for poise and equanimity and for performing one’s designated duty. There are seven important lessons Lord Krishna has given in the Bhagavad Gita that we should all remember. 1. Honour your existence for the whole universe is an individual part, and we are part and parcel of the universe. 2. Never fight with hatred but fight for justice; fight with equanimity. 3. Our mind keeps changing all the time. If our mind is trained well through Sadhana (spiritual practices), it befriends and helps us. Otherwise, our own mind behaves like an enemy. 4

SSRVM Magazine NOV 2022 Bengaluru East 4. Liberation is acquired by Nishkama-Karma — Action, which is done without any feverishness or attachment to the fruits of the action. 5. When you feel hurt, don’t shut down. Look into the situation. If a wise person’s actions, or someone you have a lot of regard for, hurts you, then know that it is for some good reason. If a friend is hurting you, know that some karma is getting released. If the hurt is coming from an ignorant person, then have compassion. These three attitudes can make your whole personality shine. 6. Remember that that which is temporary is sorrowful. Sukha is inside you. Don’t look for happiness in that which is temporary, fleeting and changing. Joy and happiness are only in that which does not change. 7. The relevance of Gita is in observing the flow of events in your life. That is ‘Sakshi’! Look at your past — Is it not a dream? Similarly, another 20 years will pass. This is how you rise above any situation. Just like how the air comes and blows everything away, in the same way, all of life’s events come and go. But what is essential is that you should not get stuck anywhere, move ahead and put in your efforts. Whatever is yours will come to you for sure. 4

SSRVM Magazine NOV 2022 Bengaluru East Principal's Corner YOUR CHILD NEEDS YOUR PRESENCE MORE THAN YOUR PRESENTS Every child is unique. Parents should help them to learn what they are good at, what they enjoy and what makes them feel good about themselves. They should work with children to discover and nurture their personal learning strengths and abilities. Research shows that a child’s emotional style, activity level and social nature are present during the first few months of life and are unlikely to change much over time. Learning about others and about the self helps children to feel positive about themselves and have a good relationship with others. As parents, we should focus on improving social and emotional skills of children, this includes boosting child’s confidence and self-esteem. The children who are more confident will behave positively. They will be more confident to achieve their goal. Children should be supported in developing emotional literacy to help them develop their skills in communicating how they are feeling, rather than acting out emotions in potentially inappropriate ways. We should be affectionate when our children are physically or emotionally hurt. If parents have shown extravagant or caressing affection , then the child will feel less stressed or anxious whatever the hard situation he /she faces in life. Unconditional love and affection from parents can make children emotionally happier. Lack of affection impacts children both mentally and physically. This can lead to all kinds of health and emotional problems throughout their lives. If a child’s early experiences are defined by missing or distorted nurturing, then it can lead to stunted emotional and cognitive development. 1

SSRVM Magazine NOV 2022 Bengaluru East Principal's Corner Encourage your children when they do well. If a child feels good about himself/herself, she will be really confident . Whenever PTM is conducted, do meet your child’s teacher to discuss his/her progress. Ensure that your child attends school regularly and provide quiet , comfortable place for studying at home and make sure that your child is well rested on school days and on the day of a test. If they are tired, then they will not be able pay attention in the class. It is normal for parents to want to do things for their children, but if they get older it’s vital to let them do more things on their own. You should not be involved in every decision that your child makes. Allow them to make decisions on their own and raise them as an independent thinker. ‘Nurturing a child’s sense of personal worth and therefore hope and dreams for a wonderful future is perhaps the most important responsibility of every grown up in a child’s life.’ Dr. Reshma Ganesh Founder Principal and Campus Director, Sri Sri Ravishankar Vidya Mandir Bangalore East 2

SSRVM Magazine NOV 2022 Bengaluru East Editor's Corner Weaving Values in Curriculum Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar says: \"Every parent would like to have a child whose personality shines wherever the child goes. It is the personality that is appreciated everywhere. Such pleasing personality is the main aim of this education\". It is rightly said that education has the power to change the world, and we value education as a part of that process to change the world through knowledge and the right path. Education is considered as a major vehicle for inculcation of values among children. It is a process of transmission of values, which helps them to lead a good life, in accordance with societal aims. Values reflect our sense of right and wrong. They help us grow and develop. They help us create the future we want and the decision we make every day. The World is changing. In today’s scenario, with the huge crisis and shortage of moral values and ethics, value education becomes an immortal weapon to centralize all thoughts towards a single direction of development in the correct sense through values and moral ethics. Value education is a crucial ingredient of a child’s holistic development and overall growth as a responsible citizen for society. The role of educational institutions in inculcating values has been of the utmost importance, as it paves the foundation for every child’s learning, thus incorporating value- based education into the regular curriculum which has become an essential need because it can help them learn, the most essential values right from the start of their academic journey. It broadens the vision and makes one more sensible and responsible towards the society, parents, friends, acquaintances, loved ones, and towards national duty as a responsible citizen. It fosters all-round personality development in children. 3

SSRVM Magazine NOV 2022 Bengaluru East Editor's Corner Values as curriculum content is to identify and state those attitude, beliefs, ideals or concepts that are to be included in the curriculum. It gives a positive direction to the students to shape their future and even help them to understand the perspective of their life. It teaches them the best way to live that can be beneficial to an individual as well as people around them and encourages them to become responsible citizens. Therefore, the design and content of the curriculum are important elements of education. Although values are very much important and need to be projected, importance should be given to the way these values are filtered and installed through in a way that do not become sermons as such. The teaching approaches and strategies in the curriculum should be structured in a way that students inculcate values. This process of value transmission is different from memorization or getting information. We understand that time bound syllabus is very important, but it cannot be taught at the cost of values. Our subjects and treatment to each subject should be done consciously. Curriculum should be developed after conducting a detailed analysis of the students of a particular class. Values which are most important and urgent should be given priority. A group of values to be achieved in a year’s time can be listed. The curriculum of other subjects should be flexible enough to incorporate teaching of values. Any theory or illustration explained may be linked with values in life. Values cannot be taught like abstract subjects; however, they can be inculcated only through situations deliberately planned while teaching the subjects and in the process of acquiring the knowledge. For example, Math can help in inculcating the values of honesty, integrity, strengthens logical thinking, decision making, neatness, accuracy, precision, perseverance etc.. Geography and Environmental science can help to inculcate values of respect for other’s culture, and bring in the awareness that the entire world is one family. 4

SSRVM Magazine NOV 2022 Bengaluru East Editor's Corner Languages develop imagination, creativity, sensitivity, appreciation, emotional quotient apart from developing communication, listening, reading and writing skills. While teaching creative writing and grammar rules, emphasis should be given on values like sacrifice and brotherhood. Social sciences help to gain an understanding of the human and social environment. A study of history and great people, world heroes will help to inculcate values of patriotism, secularism, compassion, bravery, cooperation, universal love and cooperation, liberty, equality etc. Geography will encourage an understanding of the interdependence of nations, environment conservation, natural phenomenon, etc. At the same time, teachings from the biographies of the great and noble leaders also inculcate the inspiring basic human values among the students and people at large. Hence each subject is a repository of values associated with it. Similarly teaching of other subjects develops attitudes, values, and skills appropriate to that subject. This will help students explore more about each value Thus, inclusion of values in the curricula can make a huge difference. The children should develop in all dimensions keeping values at the top of their priorities. Hence, values will enhance positive attitude and mould the youngsters to be able to adapt to changing circumstances, while also efficiently carrying out their social, moral obligations. Values can be contagious, if we practice them. We as educationists can take charge of the situation, can add meaning to what is taught in schools. A small change in focus and approach can create wonders. Let’s open our arms to changes but not let go of our values and work towards helping create humans! All in all, striving on the motto of – “Broaden the vision, deepen the roots”. Ms. Barnali Nag PRT Facilitator SSRVMBE 5

SSRVM Magazine NOV 2022 Bengaluru East Teachers' Corner EXAMS ARE LIKE FESTIVALS CELEBRATE THEM Festivals are the most awaited events of the year, similarly we plan exam month diligently in advance. Festivals bring out the best in us, exams too are meant to bring out the best in us. This article is for all the students who are appearing for examination. They are the Exam Warriors- brave youngsters taking part in the festival of exam. -Exams test your current preparation, not you. In this hyper- competitive era of relentless pressure from all the sides, it is easy to think that exams are a matter of life and death, and that failure is final. But exams are not about life and death. Do not get bogged down by any pressure, particularly the fear of failure. One test or exam cannot define a person life is so much more than that. Prepare appear and do not wear failure. - Be a warrior not worrier . Every one of us is designed for exceptional things. Exams are just one of the challenges and opportunities that are in store for us. Overcome all challenges and shine. Ironically, the most commonly known fear is the fear of unknown. It is natural to be mildly concerned before exams. However, worrying all the time will not help. Being a perpetual tension cannot be in fashion. Trying to appear serious may win you sympathy but not success. Take the example of Rani Lakshmi Bai. During India's first war of Independence when the imperialist forces were closing in, she had two choices- to be a worrier or a warrior. She did not bow down and choose instead to fight, thus being immortalized as one of the greatest freedom fighters India has ever produced. -Knowledge is permanent - pursue it The aim of learning is to gain knowledge. When knowledge is pursued, marks will automatically follow as a by- product. The journey of acquiring knowledge is itself a rewarding experience. It leads you to joy and does not burden you with pressure. Focusing simply on marks not only builds undue pressure but also limits what you absorb. You will acquire selective knowledge. If you study to gain knowledge no question will seem tough. Enjoy learning for what it is, and not with any limitations. 36

SSRVM Magazine NOV 2022 Bengaluru East Teachers' Corner -It's your time- make the most of it Another name for time management is self- discipline. Proper time management is an effective tool for performing well in exams. Every individual is blessed with a unique abilities. These abilities are best channeled through quality time management. So, time management is nothing but ability management. With any effective and organized schedule, you can take one thing at a time instead of thinking about everything all the time and any possible pressure is divided. Pressure, when concentrated and accumulated, becomes tough to handle. Thus, proper time management is also proper pressure management. - Technology is a great teacher – embrace it . When it comes to technology, it is essential to have a balance. Get attracted to it, not addicted. Use it smartly and soundly but never let technology get the better of you. Use technology to become smart and to unwind smartly. -To do your best, take adequate rest in between long hours of preparation, memorizing facts, practicing solutions for mathematical problems and writing exams, take adequate rest. -Your exam, your methods-choose your own style . There is no ideal style of answering questions. Find your own unique style while keeping in mind the requirements of each question and the subject. Always remember to double check every question, especially when data and numbers are involved. -Presentation is key- master it . Quality of content is certainly of prime importance in your answers. Along with it, your presentation needs attention too. Good presentation is like beautiful icing on your favourite cake- it enhances the taste and leaves a lasting impression. Ensure that your emphasis on presentation is not time –consuming. Make it a part of your style. Ms. Anchal Jain PGT Facilitator SSRVMBE 37

SSRVM Magazine NOV 2022 Bengaluru East Teachers' Corner KINDNESS LIKE A BOOMERANG ALWAYS RETURNS Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love. Kindness can mean different things to different people. The meaning is in how YOU choose to show it. Be it through empathy, acceptance, kind gestures, thoughtfulness, the possibilities are entirely up to you. Kindness might look like being helpful or showing empathy. It may mean doing nice things without expecting nice things in return Kind is love; love is kind. Think about what love entails and what it means to love someone, that’s kindness. It’s being selfless, caring, compassionate, and unconditionally kind. Like love, it takes practice to understand and feel it. We share love with others through kind acts such as a smile, a nice word, an unexpected deed, or a planned surprise. When we offer these acts to others, we make people feel good; we pass along hope; we promote peace; we show the power of kindness. Kindness is grace. We are humans, and therefore, we make mistakes. We can be kind in our response to ourselves and others when those mistakes occur. This means thinking before speaking, forgiving before seeking revenge, and thinking about long-term relationships instead of short-term pride. If we could all remember that none of us are perfect, we would be a lot kinder to each other. Offer grace, be kind. 41

SSRVM Magazine NOV 2022 Bengaluru East Teachers' Corner Kindness is Good for the body Kindness has been shown to increase self-esteem, empathy and compassion, and improve mood. It can decrease blood pressure and cortisol, a stress hormone, which directly impacts stress levels. People who give of themselves in a balanced way also tend to be healthier and live longer. Kindness can increase your sense of connectivity with others, which can directly impact loneliness, improve low mood and enhance relationships in general. It also can be contagious. Looking for ways to show kindness can give you a focus activity, especially if you tend to be anxious or stressed in some social situations Kindness is Good for the mind Physiologically, kindness can positively change your brain. Being kind boosts serotonin and dopamine, which are neurotransmitters in the brain that give you feelings of satisfaction and well-being, and cause the pleasure/reward centres in your brain to light up Whenever you add value to other people’s lives unknowingly you are leaving footprints on the sand of time that lives on forever. Help those who need your help , contribution is a primary human need, moral responsibility and one way to find deep fulfilment. No matter how small you may think you are, you can make a difference. Kindness is the only tool that can make our world a better place. As we progress in our lives, we have a choice to become someone who is attractive not just by their looks but by their acts of kindness, love, respect, honesty and loyalty they show. It is not just about how you behave in meetings, but how you live your life and treat other people, especially those from whom you cannot gain anything.
