SSRVM MMaaggaazziinnee JulJyu2ly0222022 Bengaluru East Principal’s Message THE SEEDS OF GRATITUDE!!!! Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. In the process, people usually recognize that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside themselves. As a result, being grateful also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals — whether to other people, nature, or a higher power. Practicing gratitude can be a game-changer: it has far reaching effects, from improving our mental health to boosting our relationships with others. Living one’s life with gratitude helps one notice the little wins—like the bus showing up right on time, a stranger holding the door for you, or the sun shining through your window when you wake up in the morning. Each of these small moments strings together to create a web of well-being that, over time, strengthens one’s ability to notice the good. Gratitude doesn't need to be reserved only for momentous occasions: you can also be thankful for something as simple as a delicious piece of cake. Nowadays adults as well as children have lost this gentle act of being thankful or grateful. We have become so mechanical that we take everything for granted and forget to acknowledge the effort behind it. Once there was a mighty king who was busy conquering his neighboring kingdoms by waging wars. For months together he would be on the battle-field. After he returned from the wars, he would go to his secret palace to rejuvenate himself. During one such visits to his secret palace an incident changed his whole perspective towards life. It was monsoon time and the king was deep asleep in his luxurious bed. Suddenly the croaking of frogs disturbed him and he woke up in rage. He called out to his guards and asked them what was the disturbance. The guards told him that it was mere croaking of frogs cause it was a monsoon season and there were frogs all around. The king was furious and ordered the guards that before his next visit to the palace, all the frogs be captured and killed. The next day the king left for another siege. Meantime the guards appointed people to catch the frogs and destroy them. Soon the king returned to the secret palace after conquering his rival kingdom. He was quite tired and told his guards that he was going to rest and nobody should wake him up until he himself wakes up. The soldiers went back to their positions and ensured that no one entered the palace to meet the king. They were round the clock on duty. 1
SSRVM MMaaggaazziinnee JulJyu2ly0222022 Bengaluru East Principal’s Message That night as the king was fast asleep, he was disturbed by the buzzing of a mosquito. He waved his hand and shunned it off and continued sleeping. This time a scourge of mosquitoes buzzed around his head and started biting him all over his body. The king screamed at the top of his voice and called for the guards immediately. He was bitten by the mosquitoes all over his face, neck , arms, feet etc. Itching vigorously, he asked what was this new nuisance all about. The senior most security guard told the king that since it was monsoon time, there were lot of mosquitoes breeding all over the palace. Earlier the frogs used to prey on them and keep a check on them but after the king had demanded that all the frogs be captured and killed, the mosquitoes were multiplying in number and creating a havoc in the region. The king realized his folly and said that he was really so foolish to have not understood and respected the Almighty’s creation. He realized that everything small or big on this earth had it’s own unique importance but instead of appreciating them, he tried to analyze everything from his own perspective which ultimately led to this disaster. He ordered the guards to restore the kingdom with lots of frogs. It is human tendency to just criticize everything with our limited knowledge and fail to understand and appreciate God’s creation. We try to find faults with everything and everyone instead of expressing our gratitude for the blessings we have. Teachers as well as parents should sow the seeds of gratitude in the young minds right from the beginning. Teach them to be grateful for every little thing they have. To do so we as adults need to set an example before them. The benefits of practicing gratitude are nearly endless. If we regularly practice gratitude by taking time to notice and reflect upon the things we are thankful for, we will surely experience more positive emotions, feel more alive, sleep better, express more compassion and kindness, and even have stronger immune systems. SSRVM MMaaggaazziinnee JulJyu2ly0222022 Bengaluru East Editor’s Corner: “We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.” Frederick Keonig During difficult times, it is easy for a human to become speechless or drained by the negative thoughts. These thoughts can sneak in and make up the mind so stiff that most of us tend to forget the happy moments or positive thoughts. However, a simple practice of being grateful for the other things that one is blessed with will help to alleviate these feelings. Gratitude is a powerful force that has a real impact on physical health, wellness of mind, emotional and mental wellbeing. It is the source of happiness and satisfaction, as it is said that a person cannot be grateful if he/she is unhappy. If a person is grateful, he/she tends to focus on the present thing and appreciate God and be thankful for what he/she is blessed with. This also reduces the anxiety about the future and have a sense of gratification by providing a feeling of fulfilment of whatever he/she is bestowed with. It is said that practicing gratitude has lot of beneficial effects. The benefits of practicing gratitude are nearly endless. People who show gratitude have time to think and reflect upon the things/instances they are thankful for and show positive signs by being compassionate and promote kindness in bringing peace and harmony everywhere around the society. Few keys that help to start gratitude as a practice in our daily life – Freshen up your thanks: The best way to reap the benefits of gratitude is to identify new things you’re grateful for in your daily life. Gratitude journaling works because it slowly changes the way we perceive circumstances by fine- tuning ourselves on what we focus on. While practicing to be thankful to your family we can express it by writing a note and let them know that the person that we are grateful for his/her time and support. Show a little enthusiasm: Communicate in such a way your friend or relative made an impact, expressing gratitude with extra enthusiasm can emphasize the extent of your thanks. Phrases like “You made my day!” or “You saved my life!” are more potent than simply saying thank you. Get specific: Naming what you are really grateful for is a powerful way to communicate to your friend, family member or colleague and what it is that makes them so special to you. So let us take that extra step of being grateful for all that we have in life. This is one of the keys to true happiness. Let us recognize all of the wonderful things we have and appreciate it, rather than dwelling on the negative, and those ‘not so wonderful’ things that don’t seem so bad after all. SSRVM MMaaggaazziinnee JulJyu2ly0222022 Bengaluru East Teacher’s Corner: HOW TO TEACH THE IMPORTANCE OF GRATITUDE IN YOUNG MINDS?? Gratitude is the quality of being thankful, readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. Gratitude is a gift given to kids enabling them with the ability to evoke positive emotions in their own lives. Gratitude is a high-level concept, naturally self- focused in their early ages and stages of development. Teaching kids to be grateful is instilling the sense of the gesture which goes beyond good manners. The strategies that help kids to feel more grateful are: ▪ Encouraging kids to say 'Thankyou' and 'Please' on regular basis. ▪ Giving regular reminders to verbally express appreciation. ▪ Talk to children about support/donating a charitable organization, what those actions mean to those who received the kindness. ▪ Talking to kids at bedtime what he/she is thankful for that day. ▪ Encouraging kids to give complements to appreciate another person. ▪ Finding positive in frustrating situation and discussing it. ▪ Coaching children to turn complaints into praises. ▪ Giving thankyou notes/cards/letters/gifts to those who have added value to their life. ▪ Helping children to work through feeling of jealousy they have etc. Students who are raised knowing how to feel and express gratitude grow up to be a well-rounded individual with a greater level of mindfulness, self-efficacy and interpersonal skills. Gratitude teaches kids to be more empathetic which boosts positive emotions and balance out negative emotions. Ranjita Subudhi Facilitator – Pre - Primary SSRVM Bangalore East 4
SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East July 2022 Teacher’s Corner: IMPORTANCE OF GRATITUDE IN YOUNG MINDS Saying thank you is one of the first social rules many parents teach their children. We want our kids to be appreciative and not take things for granted, and learning to be grateful can improve kids’ relationships, ability to empathize, and overall happiness. Here are some ways to reinforce the importance of gratitude in young minds: 1. Set an example Kids learn a lot from watching their parents. Show them what it means to be grateful by offering a genuine “thank you!” to a waitress who serves your food, a helpful neighbor, someone who holds the door open for you. But don’t stop there — include your kids, too. Thanking children for doing things that are helpful, even when they are chores like putting away toys, reinforces the behavior and lets them know they’re appreciated. 2. Have a talk For some kids, especially young children or those who have trouble understanding emotions, it can help to have a talk about how showing appreciation makes other people feel. Try asking your child how they feel when people say thank you to them for doing something nice, and then how they feel when they don’t. Going over his own feelings will help them understand how his behavior affects others and make it easier for them to understand the emotional benefits of being grateful. 3. Find fun ways to say thanks There are lots of ways to show gratitude. If your child isn’t comfortable talking to strangers or has a hard time expressing themself in writing, work together to produce a different way for them to show their appreciation. They could try giving a smile or a thumbs up if someone holds the door, or they could draw a thank you picture. 4. Put things in perspective Talk to your kids about those who are less fortunate. Don’t scare them, but don’t keep them in the dark either. Understanding that not everyone has the same advantages will help them develop compassion for others and gratitude for their own privileges. 5
SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East July 2022 Teacher’s Corner: IMPORTANCE OF GRATITUDE IN YOUNG MINDS 5. Get involved If kids are too young to go alone or aren’t comfortable dealing with strangers solo, make giving back a family affair. Find places where you can volunteer together or let your child choose a charity to donate to. Giving and gratitude go hand in hand, and doing it as a family will bring everyone closer and help you make some great memories. 6. Make gratitude part of bedtime When you tuck them in at night, ask your child to tell you three things they’re grateful for. Even if they’ve had a bad day it will help them—and you—end each day on a positive note. 7. Give kids credit Be mindful of the fact that your child may have their own way of expressing gratitude, even if it doesn’t fit your expectations. Different kids communicate in different ways. For example, your child may be more comfortable giving a hug than a verbal thank you, or might show their appreciation by helping out around the house or drawing you a picture. Tuning in to your child’s unique way of being thankful will let them know that even as they’re learning new ways to give back, you see and appreciate the thoughtful person they already are. During the corona pandemic, the world witnessed how selflessly doctors across the world served the people and emerged as true heroes. During the pandemic , all the doctors came to the forefront without any question. They had to stay away from their children and their family due to their contact with the Covid patients. Doctors do not have any leave or any festival, their duty is only their festival. Doctors all over the world are given the stature next to God. It’s because they are life savers who work tirelessly for mankind. The role of a doctor is critical and cannot be filled by any other profession. SSRVM Magazine Jaunlyu2a0ry222022 Bengaalluurruu EEaasstt Teacher’s Corner: BOOK REVIEW Book - A Tale of Two Cities Author- Charles Dickens Country – United Kingdom Language – English Genre – Historical Novel Set in - London and Paris A Tale of Two Cities was the 12th Novel written by Charles Dickens and was published in the year 1859. It is one of his historical novels. A Tale of Two Cities employs an indirect tone, and the story is viewed from the eyes of an all-knowing-entity, who has direct access to the thoughts and feelings of all the characters. The story, however, defines the characters more by their actions rather than by their thoughts and feelings. The story employs a fable like opening, with the famous line, \"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…\" giving the story a sense of being surreal. The French Revolution that has since been eclipsed by the 1st and 2nd World Wars was the most gruesome episode of violence in Dickens’ period, and a highly debated topic of those times. The outsider point of view of the story allows the reader to feel like he is observing the unfolding of events before him, instead of being part of them. A Tale of Two Cities is one of the most widely read novels in history, yet it has a number of qualities at odds with that. It is picaresque and disjointed; it is a ‘tale’ but a long one; it is historical fiction but avoids a lot of the history and, given its source material, runs several risks of unoriginality. But, in the hands of a master, it becomes a classic. Among the strengths to recommend it, there is no denying that Dickens knows how to write a great scene. In a general sense, he creates a tone for the reader to feel in the world he is creating for them, such as when he describes the poverty and hunger in France, with the tools and weapons lying sharp and ready. Noddy has many friends in Toyland and this series is an opportunity to learn more about his closest friends as each story shows him starting a new adventure with a different main character. The naughty goblins, Gobblin and Sly have tricked Mr. Plod into painting the police station to get out of jail. Can Noddy stop them and what can he do? Will he be able to make the station look like new? This curiosity would make the readers to enjoy reading the book till the end. I think this book would help the children to value the importance of friendship, to be helpful and kind towards others. I would highly recommend this book to our young readers. The book is filled with pictures on every page. Children would love the illustrations. It would instill their imagination. They would enjoy reading it. I give this book 5 stars. SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East July 2022 Students’ Corner TRIBUTE TO DOCTORS Doctors are very important in our life. They help patients to recover from diseases. They save lives. Many kids are afraid of going to a doctor as they give us injections. But doctors are just helping us, protecting us from diseases. In 2020 when Covid 19 started, many people started getting this disease. Doctors spent twenty-four hours treating people without thinking about their own lives. They stayed away from their families to keep them safe. While treating the patients many doctors contracted this deadly disease and they sacrificed their lives for us. Even when they were tired, they continued to work. They worked day and night while we were sitting comfortably at our homes during the lockdown. We should be grateful to the doctors for helping us during these hard times. This pandemic has taught us that we cannot live without doctors. Thank you doctors. Meghna Nambiar – 6F 45
SSRVM Magazine Bengaluru East July 2022 Students’ Corner TRIBUTE TO DOCTORS Doctors are viewed by many as a magician. A fantastic doctor is a one-of-a-kind gift from God. I am personally grateful to the doctors. You work continuously, day and night. Our civilization would disintegrate in front of us without these educated folks. Patients can also gain from doctors' assistance in managing chronic pain, speeding up the healing process after diseases, or developing coping mechanisms for incapacitating injuries. Even if a patient cannot be cured, they and their loved ones can greatly benefit from their ability to enjoy life. A doctor must be prepared to dedicate at least 11 years of their post-high school education to their studies. They will need to complete four years of medical school after completing four years of college to earn a bachelor's degree. So, it is easy to imagine how difficult it is. Doctors need to have solid memory skills and should be very responsible because even the slightest error they make could have the most serious consequences for their patients. Today, I would like to express my gratitude to a doctor who saved my relative's life despite having to perform a 4-hour surgery. The overall message I want to convey is “Doctors are the people who protect us while we are alive, and Gods created us. They are like Gods, have faith and trust them.” So, when a person is sent to a doctor, trust and have faith in him as he is the only person who can make the person come back to life with their energy. They are not aliens or superheroes, the only difference between them and an average student is that they have a well-planned strategy or a unique way of learning. Our aspiring students of Class -X Batch 2022-23 interviewed our School Toppers and Subject Toppers of Class X, All India Secondary School Examination Certificate 2021-22 conducted by CBSE, New Delhi , to understand their studying techniques, effective habits etc. Our Toppers were generous and glad enough to share few tips as well to their juniors which would guide them on their path to success. Interview of Class X School Topper Dhanya S Prasad: Q1. Has your efforts made you proud of your results? Ans. Yes, I am happy and proud that my hard work is reflected in the results. Q2. During your preparation period, did you ever undergo any slump phase or simply lack of motivation? If so, can you please share, how did you overcome it? Ans. Yes, I felt low at times, primarily because of external factors like COVID lockdown etc. However, I continued to concentrate as much as possible and used to study lighter topics/subjects during such times. I was also playing sports with my friends to lift my mood. Q3. How did you maintain your social life along with your studies? Ans. I totally relied on the school classes and did not take any external tuitions. This gave me a lot of time for self-study and extra-curricular activities. I attended badminton coaching classes for an hour every day and also played with my friends regularly. Q4. Can you please share a few tips from your experience to the current X graders to do equally good? Ans. To the current 10th graders, I would like to suggest that it is important to study regularly, and with concentration. It will be good to stick to a regular study routine and also continue to pursue their hobbies/interests. It is more important to study with concentration than to study for long hours.
