SSRVM e Magazine Bangalore East JUNE 2022 Teacher’s Corner: BOOK REVIEW Name of the book: Matilda Matilda Author: Roald Dahl Illustrator: Quentin Blake Genre: Children’s Literature Fantasy Age: 8-12 years Language: English ‘Matilda’ is written by one of the world’s best British story teller, Roald Dahl. This book tells the darkly humorous tale of Matilda Wormwood, a child prodigy, who is misunderstood by her parents and loathed by the school’s headmistress, Mrs. Trunchbull. On the other-hand her sweet, kind and generous teacher, Miss Honey thinks she is a brilliant academic genius. She has a number of schemes in her head to teach her parents and headmistress a lesson. At the end she wins against the evil Miss Trunchbull. This inspiring book is definitely one of Roald Dahl’s best known children’s books. The entire story revolves around the inspiring central character, Matilda, living a tough life and finding a way to come out of it. She is amazingly self-motivated and also finds way to quench her thirst for knowledge and wisdom. She knows everything a grown-up can know. She is sensible and polite to everybody except Mrs. Trunchbull. She reads grown-up books, plays pranks on her emotionally abusive parents and uses her telekinetic ability in her battles with a tyrannical school headmistress. Roald Dahl takes a tough scenario and uses it to make it one of the most enchanting stories ever. A surprising mix of humor, adventure and mystery. It is littered with excellent examples of Dahl’s use of creative imagination to keep the reader’s attention alive such as when Matilda uses her magical eyes to write a truthful message to the headmistress on the blackboard. The book is fast paced which makes it a really fun read. The intricate way of weaving important lessons into a story leaves a lasting impression on the young minds. The style of narration makes the story extremely interesting as it helps us visualize and experience the story. The language used is simple and enchanting. The story line is heart-warming and gripping. The expressions used are hilarious and perfectly fitting at the same time. The character-building is masterfully done. The side characters add to the dynamic nature of the book. Each character’s values shine clearly through the writing. Quentin Blake the illustrator, has a way with his artwork that not only brings the story to life but makes us laugh and connect with the characters too. This novel is strongly recommended, a must read as it provides a strong message to the youngsters ‘You can do it’. To grown-up’s ‘treat your children nicely, as they are not as helpless as you may imagine’. Roald Dahl wanted children to know that they are not weak and they can accomplish many things in life. It also gives strength to stand up for oneself no matter what sort of abuse one is under. Young minds will surely feel empowered, reading about Matilda with big brain and her mysterious extraordinary magical powers. The youngsters would learn kindness, bravery and diligence from the strong inspiring female protagonist. The edition would make a wonderful gift too. It is a light hearted, fun, entertaining and magical read for all. I believe all will enjoy reading this funny story. BARNALI NAG PRT FACILITATOR SSRVMBE 49

SSRVM e Magazine Bangalore East JUNE 2022 Teacher’s Corner: BOOK REVIEW Moby Dick Name of the book: Moby Dick Author: Herman Melville Genre: Adventure Fiction, Sea story Language: English Moby Dick, the book by the American author, Herman Melville was published in the year 1851. The author used his experience of being a sailor and wrote the detailed and realistic situations at that time of whale hunting for the sole requirement of whale oil. The crew is described beautifully with varied cultural diversion. The Author used different styles including Shakespeare's stage directions, soliloquies, and asides. The author was also optimistically inspired with Nathaniel Hawthorne who wrote Mosses from an Old Manse. The story is about how the protagonist character Ishmael's narrative of the obsessive quest of Ahab, captain of the whaling ship Pequod, for revenge on Moby Dick, the giant white whale, who had bitten off Ahab's leg from the knee in the previous voyage. The white whale is modelled on the notoriously hard-to-catch albino whale Mocha Dick, and the book's ending is based on the sinking of the whaleship Essex in 1820. The story reflects the cruel way of how the carcasses of whales were lying underneath the seabed factually showcases the selfish interests of humans to quench the thirst of greed. It reminds us of how humans have not only brought destructions to mother nature but also the destructions that we can do when we are in the path of revenge. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and recommend this for the readers of all ages. Ms. Arpita TGT English Facilitator SSRVMBE 50

This story revolves round an 11-year-old boy named Charlie who had faced hardships when his father lost his job and then they had to shovel snow from the streets during severe winters to earn their living. Even though the family had been through miseries, the boy never forgot the values that were inculcated by his elders. The author talks about a story where Charlie who had previously heard the fascinating story of a chocolate factory by his grandfather and how it got closed and later got reopened as well and how the boy got a chance of visiting the factory. The story aesthetically showcased the big machines that the boy was amazed to see and later introduced the hidden interest of the factory owner who had purposefully rolled the lottery to see who would be worthy successor of Willy Wonka by giving the selected candidates, some of the worldly desires and other 4 children fell for those temptations apart from the 5th child, the protagonist character of the story, Charlie who even though did not know the main intention of the owner, did not give in and portrayed the true character. SSRVM e Magazine Bangalore East JUNE 2022 Teacher’s Corner: INDIAN FOLK-ART Folk-art as a visual medium does not have a unique definition but generally consists of all forms of visual art delivered in the context of an existent society within a particular geographical and cultural niche. In this manner, folk-art caters to local tastes and needs, is reflective of the way of life and culture in a community and provides tangible and intangible forms of art with distinctive styles and objects that stand removed from other cultural developments of their time. Intangible folk-art forms include music, dance, and narrative structures, while tangible folk-art forms refer to objects that are crafted by hand or other means within the traditional practices of a community. The purpose of folk-art is to serve as a medium through which a community’s traditions, beliefs, and attitudes can be transmitted and passed from one generation to another. This is often achieved within families and community via practical demonstrations, conversation, and daily practice. Folk-art was developed to address the very real needs, and desires of a community. Once that need is removed, the relevant folk-art may gradually vanish within the annals of history thanks to decreased transmission and communication of its existence within the community. SSRVM e Magazine Bangalore East JUNE 2022 Student's Corner: THE WALL OF GRATITUDE A few noteworthy words Sometimes a person, place, or simply a few words can entirely change or shape one's life. Our school, our teachers, and our parents all serve these vital roles in our life. They immensely contribute to instill qualities such as discipline, public speaking, respect, and hard work in us. Many beautiful memories are attached to school events. Over the years, our teachers strengthen the skills we need to compete in the world. Moreover, they have been the support system for us students. As a noble once said, \"Wisdom is the right use of Knowledge\", our school has pushed us to reach our full potential, preparing us to face the outside world. Today, I take this as an opportunity to thank my teachers for the knowledge they have imparted to us as it enables us to choose the best path for our future. They are the ones that taught us to learn a subject practically than theoretically. We don't always have the right words to express our gratitude to these life-changing, but they are always an exceptional role model. They will always remain an inspiration even though we move on in the future. We are extremely lucky to have a school where our talents never go unnoticed, and everyone gets an opportunity. Even through these tough times, our school has not stopped supporting us and engaging us in various extra-curricular activities. Furthermore, the activities that I have participated in school have helped me to acquire skills like leadership, teamwork and communication. \"Be your better self\" is the best motto that we are taught at our school. To conclude, I would like to thank everyone, especially my teachers, whose efforts I cannot ignore. The people who have shaped me into the person I am. As teachers, who had the power to influence my mind to a great extent. Thank you to all teachers and especially our school that created an environment of enthusiasm for learning, appreciation for growing, and room for making mistakes along the way.
