SSRVM e Magazine Bangalore East JUNE 2022 ” JAI GURUDEV” TEACH KIDS THE IMPORTANCE OF NON-VIOLENCE Young minds must be educated in non-aggression programs and learn how to handle their own negative emotions of rage, grief, guilt and frustration. It is not possible to avoid stress in life, but we need to teach our young ones on how to manage the negative emotions that they encounter. It is our responsibility to establish a sense of respect for each other and train their minds to adopt non- violence as our means of conduct. By doing so, a positive impact is bent in the minds of our future generation. Schools should conduct meditation whenever possible, as it can help one overcome the negative emotions and train the mind to face challenges with a positive thought. Let’s work on sharing healthy ways for people to manage their stress, frustration, and anger at their core and commit in building human values back into our schools and communities. Together, let’s create a violence-free, stress-free world. “We need to infuse the hearts and minds of people, the value of non-violence. ” - Sri Sri 1

SSRVM e Magazine Bangalore East JUNE 2022 Principal’s Message: HAVING THE RIGHT ATTITUDE ‘Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.’ For success, Attitude is equally and as important as Ability. A person will be able to achieve greater heights and go places if he has a positive attitude. An optimistic person will have the ability to see a positive note even in difficult situations and always motivate him/her to be hopeful of encouraging thoughts within. Our mind is a powerful thing. If we allow ourselves to be in a positive state of mind, our attitude will also follow the same. Our actions, reaction and thoughts toward other individuals can determine the end result of the interaction. A person should take responsibility for his/her actions, thoughts and feelings. To make the topic more vibrant, I would like to share a small story on having the right attitude. There was a person who used to travel from one village to other as a part of his work. One day while he was going from one village to the other, he saw a farmer ploughing the field. The traveller went up to this farmer and introduced himself and told him that he was coming from the nearby village across the river. He then enquired about the villagers in that village. Before replying to his question, the farmer asked him about his experience in the nearby village from where he was coming. The traveller frowned and said that he had a horrible experience there. The villagers were not at all friendly. He was not at all comfortable and didn’t enjoy his stay there. He wanted to just leave that place as soon as possible. The farmer laughed and said that he had come to the wrong place. The villagers there were worse than the one he had met in the nearby village. Hearing this the traveller made a sad face and walked away and the farmer continued with his work. After a while another traveller came that way. He looked very happy and was humming a song. He came up to the same farmer greeted him and enquired about the village and villagers. The farmer asked him from where he was coming. The second traveller replied that he was coming from the nearby village across the river. The farmer asked him about his experience in the nearby village. Before he could complete his sentence the second traveller started praising the villagers in the nearby village. He said he had such a warm welcome there. They were very hospitable and kind. He had developed a special bonding with them in his few days of stay there to the extent that the villagers didn’t want him to leave. With a heavy heart he had parted from them Contd.... 2

SSRVM e Magazine Bangalore East JUNE 2022 . After hearing this the farmer told him that the villagers there were as loving and kind as the nearby villagers. They would welcome him happily and shower him with love and affection. The second traveller was very glad to hear that and thanked him and continued walking towards the village, happily humming the same song. A local villager, who was relaxing nearby was watching all this happen. Perplexed he came up to the farmer and told him that to the first traveller he had said that the villagers there were unfriendly, and it was difficult to cope with them later to the second traveller he had given a contradictory statement that the villagers there were very friendly and caring. How could he give two contradictory answers to two different persons for the same question, and he asked for an explanation. The farmer laughingly said it was very simple. The first traveller had a negative attitude, so wherever he went, he only found faults and was cribbing. That was why he told him so. Whereas the second traveller had a positive attitude and hence he was able to appreciate and understand others. He was able to see the good qualities in others. Therefore, his answer to both the travellers were based on their attitude. We as teachers and parents, need to spread positivity and develop the right attitude in our children as they are the pillars of our Nation. We have to work on setting up the optimistic mindset and attitude in children. When things are in utter chaos, a positive mindset will help them to sail through all the ups and downs and shape their mind to concentrate on areas that will help them work towards their goals. A positive attitude really makes dreams come true! DR RESHMA GANESH FOUNDER PRINCIPAL AND CAMPUS DIRECTOR SRI SRI RAVISHANKAR VIDYA MANDIR BENGALURU EAST 3

SSRVM e Magazine Bangalore East JUNE 2022 Editor’s Corner: TEACHER-A SECOND MOTHER TO CHILDREN A teacher is lot more than just someone who teaches. A teacher is a person who helps students to become better individuals. She plays the role of a guide, a friend and as a parent. A teacher is a one who works in bringing out the best from students and inspire them to strive for greatness. Teachers not only guide students in academics or extracurricular activities but are also responsible for shaping a child’s future, making him/her a better human being. Teacher is the best role model for students as she imparts knowledge, good values, tradition, modern-day challenges and provides them with ideas/ways to resolve them. A good teacher is an asset to the students. The presence of a teacher in a student’s life can boost their self-esteem, confidence and guide them to be more valuable in life thereby grooming them to become well known personalities. A teacher is impartial, and she treats all students equally. She takes it as her prime responsibility to give equal opportunities to all students in helping them come out of their comfort zone. She is an incarnation of patience. Students learning speed and pace is different from each other. Hence the teacher makes it as a point to understand his/her students, know their skills, talent, memory and treats them individually to guide them towards the best. In addition, she also encompasses on problem-solving skills to help students overcome their challenges. To conclude, teachers gear up to help students gain knowledge and understand concepts outside the textbook. They take extra time and care to interact with the students with viable and real-life examples and incidents to help them have a better understanding and awareness of the topic/discussion. As a result of this, students can apply their knowledge gained while they face a similar situation. A teacher acts as a consistent guide to help students in graduating from one level to another. A teacher plants the seeds of knowledge, sprinkles them with love and patiently nurtures their growth to produce tomorrow’s dream!!!! VARSHINI PRT FACILITATOR SSRVMBE 4

SSRVM e Magazine Bangalore East JUNE 2022 Special Educator's Corner: WORKING MEMORY We always wonder what is memory, its the psychological processes of acquiring, storing, retaining, and later retrieving information. There are three major processes involved in memory: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Human memory involves the ability to both preserve and recover information. Memories cause chemical changes in the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain. The chemical changes create what are called memory paths. These paths can remain in the brain for seconds or for a person's entire life depending on how strong our pathway is built. For example, we do not forget the way to our house as we keeping going back to our house. It gets imprinted in our memory, same way we need to work on the neurons to store and retrieve information. Hence working memory is very essential for all of us. In a child working memory involves the manipulation and transformation of verbal and visual information. For example, remembering instructions and their content to then carry it out, remembering what to say when called upon, keeping your place on the page when reading, reverse sequences of objects/numbers. Working memory tasks could include listening to a sequence of events in a story while trying to understand what the story means. Weak working memory skills can affect learning in many different subject areas including reading and math. There are two kinds of working memory that work together: auditory memory and visual-spatial memory. How working memory helps kids. • Working memory helps kids to hold on to information long enough to use it. • Working memory plays an important role in concentration and in following instructions. • Working memory is like a mental sticky note that keeps track of short-term information. Here are few games when played with kids can increase the working memory in kids. • Memory/Concentration. A deck of children's matching picture cards easily becomes the classic favourite game of Memory. • Picture Bingo. ... • What's Missing? ... • I Went Shopping… ... • The Magic Cup Game. ... • Brain Boxes. ... • Draw a Word on My Back. ... • Number String. • Work on visualization skills. ... • Have your child teach you. ... • Try games that use visual memory. ... • Play cards. ... SSRVM e Magazine Bangalore East JUNE 2022 Health and Wellness Corner: WHAT IS THE RIGHT PORTION FOR A KID TO EAT? “Never take a portion that is bigger than the size of your palm” Children need healthy food in the right amount, so that they get all the nutrients needed to grow, learn and thrive. Your child’s needs will depend on their activity levels. Keep a watch on the size of portions. Serving bigger amounts can lead to unconsciously eating more. Like adults, children tend to eat more when more food is presented to them, and this tendency has been detected among children as young as 2 years of age. Although not all children respond equally, research has shown that from age 2 to 5 years, meal size promotes faster growth regardless of how often food is eaten. Portion size management is therefore essential in the development of healthy eating habits of children. This means both using portion size to limit less healthy food consumption and possibly calories but also encouraging the intake of healthier foods, such as fruit and vegetables. Some of the factors challenging portion control- various advertisements on junk food. Children get attracted to these kinds of food which invariably becomes difficult for the parents to convince their children. Hence many parents fall prey to this and pack boxes of unhealthy food for their child. Many don’t realize that entertaining such food habits will cause only harm to their child. There are few parents who assume that by sending a huge box of rice mixed with any gravy or curd is sufficient for the child, whereas the reality is that the child is not in a position, to complete the whole meal. As parents we need to realize that the child can eat only a required amount of food. Stuffing the box with food and expecting the child to complete it within a given time is far from reality. Many parents are finding it difficult to assess what is a suitable portion. According to recent study mothers have reported that grandparents were obstacles to the regulation of children’s food. The grandparents were seen as often providing extra food, undoing parents’ good work. Portion control tips: • Send a small box of nuts or dry fruits which helps in fueling the energy in your child. • Avoid giving milk early in the morning as children tend to throw up. • Send fruits for breakfast. Container should be of medium size. • Depending on the type of food prepared at home you can send just 2 idlis or dosas or chapathi. • For lunch keep a medium sized box. Do not stuff the box with too much food as it becomes difficult fo them to complete it within a given time of 30 minutes. • Send sufficient water. SSRVM e Magazine Bangalore East JUNE 2022 Teacher’s Corner: HAPPY TEACHER IS THE ESSENCE OF A HAPPY CLASS During the school hours, we teachers have the most significant impact on the kids. We want them to understand that achievement goes beyond academics and test results. We want them to understand that happiness is about more than simply academic success. And more than anybody else, teachers are the ones who can attest to this. In the end, success is all about our well-being, happiness, and pleasant influence on others around us. Now the question is, what do our students learn about success from watching us behave? How can we help our students understand what happiness and prosperity really means? We, the educators, must model it - because happy teachers are the essence of a happy classroom. Teachers have long understood that the true measure of success in life is not one's income but rather one's influence on the world. But happiness is a key component of success. And I must add that each one of us teachers should strive to be excellent \"happy\" role models for our children. Life includes stress, difficulty, and failure. There's no denying that teaching is analogous. Therefore, we must make use of these teaching opportunities to share with the students how we deal with such difficulties. If we find it difficult to be resilient, we might discover that the students also find it challenging. Students can see through our own empty rhetoric. As a result, our activities must be consistent with our satisfaction and contentment when instructing in the classroom. We want to cram as much teaching time as possible into our day with students but, doing so might not be the best idea. More leeway and downtime can be built in, which can assist students in learning the yin and yang of real productivity. A relaxed and happy classroom creates a productive atmosphere. Teachers are better able to uphold the ideal of a joyful classroom when they are kind to themselves. So instead of self-criticism, let's emphasize self-compassion. For us recovering perfectionists, self-criticism is quite alluring, but it will have a disastrous impact on our students' ability to learn in the class. They'll cease taking chances and pushing themselves outside their comfort zone. In conclusion, happy teachers lead to happy classrooms, but for our students to notice and convey the same, we must shift our attention to self-care and put empathy above our inner critic. The kindhearted educators we truly are, we only need to take one step in the direction of mental wellness so that we can spread happiness to our students. MS. SSRVM e Magazine Bangalore East JUNE 2022 Teacher’s Corner: HOW DOES FAMILY TIME CREATE AN IMPORTANCE IN CHILD’S THOUGHTS? “Family time” is an essential factor that helps to create strong bonds, love, connections and relationship among the family members. Spending quality time with family does help in coping with challenges, instill a feeling of security, inculcate family values, fill kids with confidence and much more. A child’s learning and socialization are most influenced by their family since the family is the child’s primary social group.
